[Q] No "USB utilities" only "USB settings", can't connect - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I can't connect my phone's mass storage to my computer. There's is no 'USB utilities' in the 'Wireless and Network' menu. Which is strange because I swear I've used it before. I'm currently running on DarkyROM JVQ 10.2.2 (I had to download the zip file directly onto my phone). The 'USB settings' menu contains 'Samsung Kies', 'Media player' and 'Mass storage'. Changing to any of the options and connecting the cable does nothing. When connected the computer does not recognise the device and the driver isn't installed. I've tried installing Kies, and also installing Samsung's Mobile Phone drivers but nothing seems to work.
I've spent a few hours crawling forums, I've tried pretty much everything that people have said. I've factory reset everything, even got a new ROM (hence running 10.2.2 instead of 10.1) and did some weird hash number thing in my dialer to open up some menu.
I've posted this in the Android Q&A section rather than the SGS Q&A as this seems to be a problem with the OS, rather than the phone itself.
What could be the problem?

[Q] Can't Access Tablet through my computer after Vegan-Tab 5.1.1

I loaded Vegan-tab 5.1.1 and everything is working great, except that i can't see my tablet as an external device anymore while connected by usb to my computer. I do see the sdcard & sdcard2 files from the ifilemanager.
Is there a way to fix this?
I noticed something similar and it turned out to be me. I was expecting the "USB connected" message when I plugged it in. However, when I looked at the top bar, there it said "USB". I pulled down the bar, clicked on USB CONNECTED and I was back in business.
Possible for you as well? Something to check...
Me too
I'm having a similar problem with Vegan 5.1. The tab is connecting and I'll go to select "Turn on File Sharing" or whatever the option is and everything will appear hunkydory. However, if I attempt to transfer a file it will hang up for a while (on the PC side) and then eventually the connection will be broken. If I look, there is a file of the right size on the internal sd, but I'm not willing to fool around with them in case they're corrupted.
Somebody please help! I've had a good search and can't find any recent posts on this topic.
My trouble shooting advice :
A) 5.1.1 has a pull down menu that you have to "active USB"
B) I installed android USB drivers on my PC just in-case so i wouldn't have connection issues.
C)May need a "powered" USB port like Portable HDD .. example: (MAC keyboard USB port isn't powered).
Vegan by default after install leaves system in USB debugging mode. Go into setup/ applications/development and turn it off.

Thanks. That solved it.

[Q] USB Debugging Connected message displayed

I installed VEGAn-7 RC1 on my g Tablet. When I try to connect USB to my computer, I can't see the drive on my Windows XP. and there is that message "USB debugging connected" displayed on the notification.
Can anyone please help?
Thanks,
Kelvin
Uh...I'm not sure about Vegan 7, but on every Rom I've ever used (Vegan 5.1.1, Brilliant corners, Flashback, Gtabcomb, Beasties, and Calk/Clem) you need to tap the notification, and select connect to USB, then you get a screen that allows you to "activate USB transfer."
If you click on the actual notification (in notificatons) it should open a dialog "USB connected on tablet" with an Activate USB transfer button & a Hide button...click Activate USB Transfer and it will enable the PC to connect.
By the way, with USB debugging turned on you can access the tablet file systems via adb.
Thank you so much for your reply. I tap on the notification and can't find any option "USB connected on tablet" or "Activate USB transfer" button. So, what is adb?
Thanks,
Kelvinlo

ADB stands for Android Debug Bridge. Involves downloading & installing java & android sdk's & ADB drivers. Allows command line access to the Android filesystem. But your PC must be able to detect the gtab before you can install the adb drivers needed to access it that way.
Look in your Device Manager & see if you have a device called Android Phone while your gTab is connected via USB!
You may want to try USBDview http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html. It's supposed to show currently connected usb devices and previously connected devices. May be useful if you are just missing the device in Device Manager.
Thanks for your replay. I finally found out what the problem is. I downloaded the VEGAn 7 version with the clemsyn kernal, which has a known issue with USB connection with gTablet. Then I downloaded and installed the one with pershoot kernal and everything run fine. However the pershoot kernal don't have overclock. A bit slower than the one with clemsyn kernal.
I believe pershoot is overclockable to 1.4Ghz. You may have to download/install setcpu to enable overclocking. Search the forums to be sure.

USB issue Kies starts, but not recognised

When I plug USB cable in my win64 device manager recognises the usb connection as "SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device"
Kies automatically starts.
but Kies does not does not connect to my phone
nor does my phone show in "My computer"
If I enter storage mode then I can access SD card and external card.
of significant note is I recently did a full format and installed Check's Dark Knight Edition Rom (but I can't post there due to newb restrictions).
I have tried to reinstall drivers using Kies but that hasn't worked.
I have deleted the drivers from PC using device manager and allowed windows to reinstall them.
any help is greatly appreciated, thank you
I get no error messages
I've tried connecting with debug mode... it installs drivers but still computer doesn't recognise phone.
Still phone appears connected in device manager.
You have to close all open programs on your phone and return it to the home page. Until you do this your phone will not connect. You should then see a Usb Plug on your screen. It should then say Initializing and then connected. Then you should see it in My Computer and get into you phones files though there too.
Hope this Helps......
Thanks.. but I know about that and it isn't that.. also.. since installing LiteningRom this has not been necessary... but good call thank you.
I've tried to connect on a different computer and was unable to connect to that.. so possibly an issue with the phone?
Could it be that you have activated the "USB debugging" mode under settings->applications->development?
So I install Cognition S2 ROM and it works fine!

Nope not that.. I had turned debugging USB on and off a number of times in the hope it would do something.. but nope
Just to test this out...
I reinstall Check's Dark Knight Edition Rom and once again I cannot connect to my computer...
I will remove this rom, factory rest and install something else
I have noticed.. 2 extra drives appear in "my Computer"... I can't access them but they appear when I plug in my phone.. and disappear when I remove it
so clearly my external and internal cards phone SD cards are not being recognised correctly when using Check's Dark Knight Edition Rom...
any ideas?
and yes I have removed, deleted drivers numerous times... installed via Kies installed via auto Windows
ok... installed Cognition S2 ROM and connected to computer... it the phone says MPT - initialisation then MPT- connection it didn't say this with dark rom!
For anyone else having this issue, it seems to be related to MTP. MTP is present in cognition, and removed from Check's rom, you can easily add this back in to make it work.
I've done a search for this with the intention of reinstalling it..
but I cannot find anything... maybe my search is off or I'm not using the correct keyword.. any help here would be great.
Also.. as this seems to be removed from a number of ROMs I have a further question.. what is the alternative?
Thanks

Copy and paste file into system/app and change permissions.

Thanks.. but still what do ppl use to back up their phones? if they haven't got this installed?
Dizzee, I had the exact same problem as yours and solved it my removing "USB debugging" in settings, as Alchemius mentioned previously. Can you double check you've done this.

[Q] Enabling Mass Storage 2.3.6

I'm trying to root my friends' ATT SGS2 i777. on GB 2.3.6
When I connect it to the computer it won't recognize it and say the device has malfunctioned.
The phone says "MTP Initialization/Connected" when I want it to enable mass storage
The Latest Samsung Kies is installed, and the computer is up to date with drivers.
I've tried going to settings>Wireless and Networks>USB Utilities but it never really connects or mounts any SD
I've tried enabling USB Debugging but still not a mount or connection.
I've tried checking "Unknown Sources" and installing USB Mass Storage apk but it'll say an error parsing the package message.
I know what MTP is, but the phone only shows up on the computer as an unknown device.
From what I know, connecting and making sure the drivers are installed is the only way rooting this phone.
Please help with any suggestions, I know there is a way.

There should be an icon in the notification bar to enable UMS
Get Mobile ODIN and flash a stock rooted tar file. Just like you would on PC ODIN.

[Q] MTP not working after installing CM 10.1.3 (i9305)

After going through a ton of hoops to get this thing rooted, then ****ing flashed, I (naturally) run into another infuriating issue that is USB drivers don't seem to work, I hear the USB connected sound on windows when I plug it in but nothing appears, connecting as a Camera (PTP) seems to "work" but I can only see some(?) of my files and nothing can be copied to the phone. I have no SD Card, only the internal memory, so mass storage is not an option either. It shows up in Device Manager as "Google Galaxy Nexus ADB Interface" under "Android Device"
Things I've tried:
-Rebooting the PC(Many times)
-Rebooting the phone(Many times)
-Powering off the phone, taking out the battery and leaving it for 5 mins then powering on again
-Reinstalling Samsung Kies and Samsung USB drivers(infinite times)
-Factory resetting the phone and skipping all account prompts at startup then connecting the phone(seems to work for some people)
-Connecting with USB debugging off
-Connecting with USB debugging on
-Changing the USB Port.
Please help, I'm just about sick of this phone and it's countless issues, can't believe how hard it is to customize.
EDIT: Wrong forum, sorry. Please delete.
