Do you guys use task manager? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Do you guys use task manager? Why or why not?

Sometimes yes...not sure if you really need to with this phone. Just a little OCD on my end

Only when some app is making problems, otherwise no

I often run a kill once at bootup, and then after that only if an app seems to be holding wakelocks or eating excessive CPU.
There is no longer any valid reason for using a task manager for memory management purposes, only for killing wakelock/CPU hogs.

I use Autostart to kill a few things that like to start up on boot, then ATK just for killing wakelock/cpu apps as well.
Mainly FB/Engadget like to stay running when I exit them and cause my battery to get eaten away.

I usually push the "clear memory" button.

I do along with Advanced Task Killer. It kind of nice to know less things is running in the background eatting battery...

ahh, thanks for the reply. cause i was wondering if i should have it as a widget (to clear memory faster) or not (save battery).

I use it when apps are misbehaving or my phone is warm. Mostly its the engadget app.. It runs cpu at like 70% when in background for some stupid reason.

It's up to you if you want to put it as a wigget for easy access. I myself don't, because I hate clutter screen. It only take me 5 seconds to navigate to it.

All the time. just to make sure nothing drains my battery and nothing (especially Browser) is not continuously access internet when I outside WiFi.

Rarely. like others I use one to check and kill misbehaving apps.
I freeze or uninstall most unused apps and disable startup on some.

Not really. I use watchdog task manager to keep an eye on things (with a fairly low threshold - 30%), and it does a really good job. I also use Autostarts to stop a few things from starting up at all.

[Q] Camera 360 and Battery usage

So I'm having a weird issue with Camera 360 and was wondering if this is normal. Once I activate Camera 360, even after exiting, it still show in my battery usage info list (the list that lists, Android system, cell standby, phone idle, display, etc). And it's using 2-4% of the battery, even though I'm not using the app at all. And it's not listed in Advance Task Killer either for me to kill it. The only way I've found to get rid of it is just doing a a Hot Reboot.
Is this normal for Camera 360??
I use Camera360 too (great app, makes really good pics a way better than the stock) and never noticed this behaviour, anyway you can use a task killer to kill the camera360 task and see what happens...

I have ATK, and it's not listed. I also have autokill on as well, and made sure camera360 is not on my ignore list. But ATK is not killing camera360.

[Q] Wanted battery saver

Hi all just wandering if anyone has good suggestion for saving battery. Maybe an app that saves battery or recommend something else. Im constantly charging my phone 3 times a day and my battery goes quick. Im using task killer and killing unwanted apps that are running. I have lowered the screen brightness as well. But my battery still runs out quickly.
Thank you
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
I have also tried cpu tuner and battery saving apps but they seem to make my phone run slow and sometimes freeze.
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
you might be running quite a lot of widgets. or animated wallpapers. taskkillers sometimes aggravate the problem, since the apps they kill, will auto start.
try some system monitoring apps. these will tell you what apps are actually USING CPU cycles. they are the ones that kills your battery quick. then you have the option to uninstall the cpu-hoggers.
if all else fails, try a different battery, or have your phone checked
Background Data is battery killer
Also double check to see if background data is being used. Settings ---> Accounts and Sync. If background data is on, many apps will continue to open themselves and refresh their data before your task killer kills them.

Is this the reason why everytime I open advance task killer, a lot of apps show up even if I didn't use them? like yahoo messenger, music, mail,.. I think almost all of my apps show up and I only have like 20+MB of free space even if I kill apps every 30 minutes?

My suggestion is to stop using autokill apps (if you're on eclair). Just kill apps manually when you feel like your phone is slowing down. What launcher are you using? Zeam is lightweight and fast. Also, keep the number of homescreen and widgets to a minimum, only the ones that you need. I also think auto rotation of the screen consumes a lot of power (I may be wrong). Is you phone new? It takes a few discharge/charge cycle before the battery achieves its full potential. Turn off WCMDA when you're not using it (use only GSM). Turn off WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS when not in use.
These are the things that I'm doing and my battery lasts 2 days with heavy texting (when I say heavy, it's 100+ text messages sent a day plus 200+ text messages received), music (1-2 hours when travelling), 1-2 hours talk time per day and a few games. I also use navigation and facebook from time to time. I use Zeam and I have 4 homescreens and 4 widgets open (APNdroid, Clock wdgt, Power Control, XPERIA Flashlight)

do this and in addion add some system apps that keep reopening to the task killers ignore list. Like for me for some reason the settings app opens 2 mins after i kill it, wasting battery. So i set it to ignore
I found that lowering CPU Frequency on Standby helps the battery. I squeeze about half a day equaling a day and 1/2 out of phone. To achieve this I use Overclock Widget(it's the only one I tried) and it does the job. Search the market for a CPU tuner that has Standby and Screen On settings. Hope u get results.
my phone lasts for two days now, and used to last only for ten hours. There are two important things to save battery: use 2g and kee gps turned off! I used to let it enabled thinking that if there were no difference if there were no apps using it. Stupid idea...

[Q] Batter life going down after doing the battery boost?

Ok so I did the battery boost thing on one of the threads, which says that you only lose 0-1 % per 9 hours on CM 6.1.3 by wolfbreak
When I did that true to its claims it gave me that long battery life but now I see that my battery is draining quickly again
did this happen to anyone else before?

Have you installed something after those ''tweaks'' that stays open in the background?
Just some games but no major programs
probably the autokiller settings are too aggressive, and because your apps (widgets maybe?) are being killed and trying to reopen constantly this is actually in effect draining your battery

Some games caused for me battery drain. So try looking with some kind of app (don't know name anymore) which one uses the most battery when on background.

Apps won't reopen if you do nothing and closed them. So it will not cause battery drain. (And if they open without using them it maybe because it sheduled or you pressed a app that made it open)

yes they will.....
Say if you have a calendar widget or beautiful widgets, etc...
Or apps that are set to be persistent

In theory yes. But in most cases the oom value of most commonly used widgets and their neccessary services are not raised or remain at around 0. AutoKiller is actually very intuitive with what apps priorities are raised it doesnt just kill everything indisciminately like most autokill task managers. I have used high values (150,200,250) for AutoKiller for more than 4 months and I have never had it kill any services or apps for widgets or even anything I want running in the background like Lookout, JuiceDefender, EasyFilter or DSP Manager. I also have numerous widgets and have never had problems with any of them being killed. I also get pretty awesome battery life. Chances are the problem is with some apps running unchecked in the background and not that apps you want in the background are getting killed.
Remember that everyone has different apps and everyone uses their phone differently so something that works for some people might not work as well for you. There are a lot of different things you can do to improve your battery life but if you try to set a target amount of battery drain (like the 0% in 9 hours) you can only be disappointed. Just use what you think helps you get the best performance for you and be happy for anything that seems to improve.

cm7 questions

recently flashed cm7. Really cool. This place has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to this stuff.
I do have a few questions regarding cm7, however.
I've tried to search, i'm no stranger to forum etiquette. the search feature just isn't turning up any relevant answers to me questions.
Is there a built in airplane widget/app ? i can only access airplane mode via the settings.
Is there a built in task manager? (does it need one) and if not, would u recommend one ? Again, accessing running apps via the settings...
Can you freeze any apps? such as "talk" "voice dialer" "voice search" "torch" "news and weather" ?
This is more of a request than a question. But I would like an optimal setting for the display, as it's killing my battery. It's almost 50% of my battery consumption. I notice it gets brighter and dimmer sort of randomly... ? i know there are settings on this, but don't really know how to set them accordingly.
Thank you in advance for any help!

For app freezing invest in Titanium Backup Pro. To my knowledge that is the go to app for app management.
I have yet to find a task manager as I've been on cm7 for all of 4 days
As far as an airplane toggle goes, you can setup the power control widget to display the airplane mode toggle...which leads me to a random question: the **** does airplane mode do?
The random dimming is cause your brightness is set to automatic-- this can also be changed with the power control widget, which is built in.
Hope this helps!

1) Airplane widget/app: You can set it as one of the options on your notification bar by going to settings, CyanogenMod settings, Interface, Notification power widget, Widget buttons, and selecting Toggle Airplane Mode. That way it is easily accessible with only one swoop of the finger.
2) Built in task manager: no clue. I simply access running apps by pulling up by app drawer and selecting running apps.
3) Freezing apps: I swear there is, because I've done it... my mind is going blank. Will edit when my brain decides to work.
Airplane mode can be toggled by long pressing the top button of the phone. Task manager is not really necessary IMHO. As for freezing apps, titanium backup pro is probably the best for that. I think an app called bloat freezer existence off market but you might have to do some searching for that.

thank you guys. Found airplane mode, but i also found the toggle to turn off data, so that's basically why i wanted airplane mode. I live in an area with crappy service, airplane and data toggle help me extend battery life... basically so my phone isn't constantly working trying to find service when i know i don't have any... as far as Freezing, i have an app that can do it, i was just curious if it was safe to do so? Mostly the apps i had mentioned above. I don't wanna freeze something, then make my phone freak out. and have to nandroid or something.
and i just wanted a faster way to reach the running apps... i'm paranoid about apps running when i don't want them to.. lol

I have ~20 apps frozen out of the maybe 50 I have and my phone is totally fine. So long as you aren't freezing something like your launcher, you're golden.
I feel the same way about running apps. Try advanced app killer. Its found in the Market, its totally free and easy to use. You can drag down the notification bar open the app and see exactly what is running and then kill anything you don't want running. There's also a one touch killer widget.

Also for brightness control on the fly go to settings, cm settings, interface, status bar tweaks and check off status bar brightness control. Takes some getting used to but you can change your brightness by sliding your finger left and right along your status bar.

Hmmm I think that is battery used while the screen locked and not in use. I've no idea how you'd regulate that other than turning the phone off altogether. Is phone idle draining more battery than your display? If so, that might be a problem.
Sent from my MB870 using xda premium
No, phone idle has never used more battery than display. So I guess that's good. Lol. I've noticed lately tho, that if I turn data on, I can literally watch my battery percentage drop. I've calibrated. And completely drained and then charged (uninterrupted) the battery.
I like cm7 though. Has lots of really cool features, but my main purpose for getting it was better battery life. ( which wasn't bad on stock) again, any and all input is welcome!
Juice defender pro. Watch it triple ur battery life.

How would that help if he has problems with data on? Not with it off. Also, juice defender does nothing more than turn off data connections when your screen is off or when you schedule it to. Its much more efficient to do it yourself.
It could be a problem with the driver. I have this issue too on my G2X.

Killing apps with Clean Master?

The app Clean Master claims it can extend battery life and device performance by killing apps--even offering a button to kill all apps. I thought killing apps was unnecessary since Android does this automatically when RAM is full and that killing apps manually actually drains battery life. What's the deal? Is swiping an app away from the Recent Apps List the same as killing an app? I currently do this often because the list is usually packed.
Thanks.
Clean Master actually does increase performance of your device, especially and lower end ones that have 512mb of ram to work with. However, this also decreases battery life by very little. Android does kill task automatically however as you said it waits until the memory is full which leads to a lot of lag and sluggishness. Swiping an app from the recent apps I believe does kill it. Personally instead of swiping my ROM supports "hardware back to kill" in which I hold down my back button to kill the app. It seemed to do a much better job than swiping.

So Clean Master does "decrease battery life by very little" and the claim that it saves battery life through killing apps is incorrect? This is at the expense of increased performance only if RAM is full, too. It seems that the term "killing apps" is very misleading even for Android users as it actually uses more battery life to kill the apps rather than leave them alone (because they use little to no resources in the background). If this is truly the case, then I guess I shouldn't worry too much about killing apps until my RAM is full and I experience lag. Still, I find it kind of surprising that such a highly rated and popular app claims one thing and does the other.
On a semi-unrelated note, is there some mod I can install on top of a ROM I'm using that lets me kill an app or display the Recent Apps List by long-pressing menu/back button? Or must I install a ROM that has this built-in feature?
Thanks.

Any task killing app such as auto memory manager, clean master, and so on decreases battery life, because it always using background resources. However, you most likely will never notice the difference in battery life lost since it is so negligible. I'm honestly not sure. I did a little bit of research and it usually pointed to that this function had to be in the framrwork of the rom. So my guess is you'd either have to modify the existing framework of a stock rom or just download a rom like Cyangonmod.
