I'm pleased to see Eris is rooted. however what if in the future, Verizon decided to ship out Eris with Official 2.1 pre-installed, how will we be able to root Eris from there?
I don't see the Eris shipping with 2.1 from what I understand the Erie is being phased out and the 2.1 ota update will probably be after that. this is pure speculation I may add

Dont worry man. There is no way to know for sure.. But im willing to bet 2.1 for the HTC Eris will be rooted before that would ever be a concern. And if somehow it does happen and no root is found, then everyone with a leak ROM install is back to where they started..
they're discontinuing the Eris so I don't see it coming up.

Really, where did you see this? Can you link me an official press release?
As far as I know, the eris is selling quite well and Verizon has no need to discontinue it.
@OP: If they release 2.1 on new devices we are in the same boat as all of us with the 2.1 leak... Rest assured that we are still working on getting root for 2.1.

Rumor is that it is going to be replaced by the Htc Incredible.
Google it IMO

I am a salesman for a third party Verizon retailer, I can confirm that the Eris not only will be discontinued, but already has been, we've been told that we will no longer be able to order more Eris's, once our current supply is gone that is it

Maybe you would know then.... if say 6 months from now our eris breaks down and we have the insurance, will we be getting a refurbished eris or be offered the next best thing (incredible)....???
Supposedly, the Eris' end of life is in May.
I don't know how they replace phones.. but I would assume a refurb, I HIGHLY doubt the Incredible, with the specs it has? No way. Maybe the moto droid.
& as far as I can tell, they haven't officially said it in a press release, but there's a screenshot circulating;

Why were they able to root and unlock the boot loader and everything else on the thunderbolt so quickly but yet no one can do it on the atrix?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Sorry, I don't know.
Because it's not locked or signed?
There's seems to be some discussion regarding it being locked or not. Engadget wrote an article about it being locked but there are a lot of comments from readers with evidence to the contrary.
With it being broken so fast, I believe it wasn't locked or signed.
Um. The phone is not unlocked. In fact the devs were in for a surprise to see the phone has signed bootloader. Signed karnel. Everything is sihned. Which is a furst for htc phone . The only thing they managed to do is root it. And they already did with the atrix. Once you have a signed bootloader and karnel. There is not much you can do.
The article was posted new today or yesterday at engadget. And nothing happened since then.
Its safe to assume all companies right now will use a locked bootloader and karnel. They dont want you to keep your phone. They want you to update.
So basically unless an employee leaks the codes we are s o l.that really sux.

Exactly and since the bootloader will never be unlocked on the Atrix then its going back next week. Suck it moto!
Right. So like I asked earlier, why were they able to unlock that one and not ours?

Yea I'm in the same boat, I might just go back to my captivate in the next week. I really like this phone but I don't feel like much progress is being made. I know there are a few busting ass trying to crack this thing but that doesn't necessaraly mean theyre making progress. Although they did get a copy of that unlocked/deencrypted phone from ken so maybe we'll see something soon.

most android hackers are on verizon, because they went in with android first. the least amount of android hackers are on at&t. also, they had better resources, they were leaked a beta bootloader that was unlocked, and also a previous ruu image (like sbf but for htc)

I don't know the true reason, but historically, HTC phones are more "open" and "hackable" than Motorola phones (excluding the original Droid). It's just a different company policy more than likely. Is this policy different with the Thunderbolt? I'm not sure...
there is a definitive difference between 'Locked' and 'Encrypted'
when you sbf back to 2.2.2, 2.3.3, or 2.3.4 does your phone not have any evidence (if thats the right word)?

Any previous data I'm assuming? No. Fully stock like it came out of the box.
That isn't fully true, you still have to do a system/data wipe. And some of your info backed up on your SD card will reappear. But as far as apps, etc, etc.. you will have to go through the hellatious setup process, unless you have it all backed up.
Well what about being root?
would that still show evidence of the exploit that is being ran?
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Nope, SBF kills root. Trying to send it in on insurance/warranty?
You are gonna want to data wipe and "clean up" internal storage just to be safe on clearing root evidence ...haven't heard of any 300dollar charges for previous rooted phones being sent in.
Sbf overwrites some /system partition. Im sure there may be some way to find out if u ever have rooted but it PROLLY isn't worth the time/process it takes to find those traces.

If he sends it in on Warranty VZW will tell him eat it if it's rooted. BUT if he sends it to Asurion on Warranty they won't care.
noo, just a random question that i figured someone knew the answer too, btw, thanks guys

No problem!
Even a data wipe doesn't clear everything I've noticed. If you truly want to remove evidence you need to manually delete all the rom zips and bootstrap apk, and any nandroid backups. I mean, they can't prove you ran them but if your serious about removing evidence. Furthermore, I've heard from a true tech geek friend (I will see if I can find a link to back up) Verizon can send a push to your phone and depending on how your phone reacts, they can tell if it is rooted.

It's called an su command. My work does it when you connect to their network.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
I saw something about that before. Heck. Google doesn't let u watch market movies if ur rooted. ((Btw that altered google videos all DOES work...it changes the su check command)
Im sure one day there will be a lawsuit similar to the one against apple about jailbreaking that users that root will WIN based on the precedent set in that case.
Not to mention the phone is supposed to be "open source" anyways. It is just like a car, while it is under warranty only the dealer is supposed to put on OEM upgrade equipment otherwise it is voided, which is part of the reason you carry insurance. And we BUY our phones, not rent/lease them.
About that su command push. I can't for the life of me think of what it is called, but I am pretty sure that is against the law. Not for your work when you join it's network since I assume they are verifying your identity, or the PC, but for them to randomly check if you are rooted.

I doubt its random, its probably more like if they try to push an update or soak test they check for root first, I've never got an update pushed to me. If you're rooted I would be shocked if they didn't just put a * next to your account.

Hate to burst your bubble there sir, BUT...if your Electrify has Android 2.3.5, then you are UNABLE to unlock the bootloader, myself and others are looking into ways to re-unlock the bootloader...again. However, if you are running 2.3.4 then you are set to jet, there is links and info for you, I think there is also a way to disable the 2.3.5 update as well.

Are you guys able to SBF? That may help if there is specific files for the electrify. NOTE: DO NOT TRY TO SBF A SPRINT FILE!!!
I have the Photon, so I have no idea. Motorola doesn't like Sprint, they love Verizon, so that's why we will never get the update on our Photons, including 1080p, or Ice Cream Sandwich, because Motorola hates Sprint, so they barely do anything for them. Any other carrier, sure.
[rant] Like you guys got 1080p updates on yours, and Android 2.3.5, we didn't yet (my phone is having issues for checking for updates so I believe that this is true, but yeah....) I know we haven't gotten 1080p yet, if we ever will. I bet someone will have to port it over, cuz we probably won't get it.
I hate to say it, but you guys will probably get Ice Cream Sandwich, and we won't.
That's how Motorola treats Sprint, and Sprint's customers. We are lucky we even have this phone on Sprint, but if it was on Verizon, it would get ICS, no doubt, but Motorola is faking this relationship with Sprint, because if they wre for real, we would have more high-end Motorola devices at least planned for the Now Network. [/rant]
Alright, I'm tired of this bootloader crap! I need anyone and everyone interested in helping me get this MoPho'in bootloader unlocked on 2.3.5!
We have WAY to many people stuck on GB (after Moto said we'd have ICS ) on this beast of a phone!
Before anyone asks, YES i have the skills to do this, just not enough to do it quickly.
With that said I do bring some skills to the table.
I can program in the Android language and port just about anything anyone can come up with.
I know my tech (to put it short)
Please anyone with the same feeling as me, come help me out in ANY way possible. Even if it's just testing. I would greatly appreciate it!
Please people!
I am not a dev. But I would be glad to help. As a suggestion, Perhaps we could start by finding a solution for unlocking mophos that were factory shipped with 2.35 such as is done with the electrify. It could provide a lot of insight.

Hmm well I learned that sprint was a big reason the BL got locked. The Electrify sbf (Yes i flashed it) is unlockable easily however my radios dont work so i cant have that. I did find some cool things inside the System partition. I rooted it up and got a file browser (ES). The blocks where the BL is has a special file called infooemenc.encf assuming this has to do with our "fastboot oem unlock" command problem. That file however was a fluke. My phone soft reset itself (doesnt like the Electrify rom) and POOF gone... Very suspicious. i had to relock to go back to photon state though
Add me to the crew. I'm happy to help as a dev, or otherwise if we need something else.

wait what?
you do realize the same phone shipped months earlier on a different carrier and was locked? (and then was released later too).
moto's first device to offer unlocking services was a sprint device. rather than jumping on teh locked samsung bandwagon they are still one of teh few companies that have most of their devices unlockable. as well as their tech support doesnt care if you are rooted as if its a software issue they are going to flash stock.
