[Q] A2SD / S2E vs. Android's Built in "Move to SD" - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

Clear enough, which one is faster?
I know S2E or A2SD are more reliable (since the apps would still work when we do other things like USB Storage)
But I am feeling some performance degradation when using S2E, is it placebo? I'm using a class 10 SD Card with ext4 partition, btw.

Did you move "Application Data" in s2e? This can degrease the performance.

what about dalvik-cache?
is it advisable to move to sd-ext or leave it at internal memory?
is it effect the performance?

I have dalvik-cache on external memory, and don't really fell a difference, I think it can make a difference in launching time of apps but no more.

Well, I don't move /data/data to /sd-ext. Then.. If it doesn't make a difference, maybe it's just a placebo lol

EDIT: How do I exclude an app so it doesn't be moved into /sd-ext? I'm kinda worried putting a launcher on /sd-ext u.u

[Q] dalvik cache rebuild?

Hey guys so I partitioned my sd card to 1gb and I installed 150 apps and games but my phone memory decreasing so fast and I getting the low on space message already I know this is due to the dalvik calche.
What happen if I press dalvik cache rebuild in the app2sdgui app? I really want more apps to be installed cos my a2sd space is 400mb+ more.
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
Dalvik cache will be rebuilt. But it's futile since the size will be the same. To increase phone memory move dalvik to sd card or reduce the number of apps.
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
So you're saying if I rebuild them my internal memory will still be the same?
I have already did moved my dalvik to sd ext and I don't want to reduce my apps. Cos I use them all.
But its really funny, I did a test, first I checked my internal memory is 60mb, then I installed Rule The Sky from the market which is 30mb then I checked my internal memory it decreases to 30mb lol. Idk if the a2sd is working sometimes or not

As said above, pointless. Looks at data2sd if you have so much junk on your phone.

That you should use data2sd instead of messing with cache rebuilds which will do nothing useful wrt free space.
My question is what will happen if I press rebuild dalvik cache in the a2sdgui apps. Will my internal memory increases. Will it harm my apps. Will it make some of my apps stops working, fc or error?
Cos I'm really desperate to increase my internal memory to installed more apps cos my a2sd space is 400mb more

Christ.
- It will rebuild the dalvik cache. Duh!
- No, already answered.

P.S. Use data2sd if you desparately need more space (and guess what, already said as well.)

[Q] How do I use a swap partition?

Sorry if I sound very dumb, but how do I use a swap partition?.. I know its like a "ram extension", please correct me if Im wrong. Could you also give opinions to what size should I put as a swap partition? Im planning to buy a 8gb class 10 microsdcard. Thank you.

Swap is Hard Disk space being used as RAM . When the system is low on memory , the applications that are inactive will get swapped to the Hard Disk . This allows more RAM to be freed for other applications and for a smooth experience .
Applications also have the ability to get swapped back and forth , so multitasking is not a problem

A swop partition is for computers that do not have enough ram. As far as I known Android (linux) OS is very good in dealing with memory. I have not seen anything on XDA developers forum in relation to this question. Android does not need a swop-disk or partition.

40mb swap is enough. swap is a backup plan: don't treat it like your actual ram.

Thanks! May I ask some other questions, without going too much OT?
In apps2sdGUI there are several low memory settings, but how do they work? There's no explanation of what they do...
In the end, always on apps2sdGUI should I change the dalvik VM heapsize standard value? Is there any benefit from doing it?
Thank you!

You can do it from pc using minitool partition wizard!
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA App
you also can try with CWM Recovery 4.0.0.9 if u using CF-root..
Reboot into recovery > choose advanced > partition SD card > then pick ur sd-ext and swap size..
for me, swap work best at the minimum 32M, larger than that would be problem later
i tried partitioning.. i have 1g sd-ext and 32m swap.. i chech a2sd repair it said sd-ext not mounted. i tried mounting it manually in cwm but still it doesnt mount. then i tried a2sd install, but when i checked titanium backusd,, my system rom and sd(a2sd) is identical.. what have i done wrong?..
Dunno.. maybe you should try reflashing!

maybe. or ill just do a nandroid restore. my system rom 42mb free become 12mb after a2sd.. lol

Using the actual sd card for gameloft games

It's there a way to get the gameloft games to use an actual sd cards instead of the internal memory for the additional data? I'm running out of space too quickly. Thanks.

Look for App2SD in the Market. This should have been in Themes and Apps, BTW.
That's not what I mean. Games and apps look to the internal memory, which is labeled sdcard. Our sd card seems to be labeled external sdcard. If an app needs to install extra data, I want to know if there is way to get it to install to the external sdcard?

Im wondering the same thing. The only way I've been able to solve it is to flash cyanogen mod and it has an option there. I moved my modern combat 3 data to the external sd after i checked use external and it worked And it kept my saved data

Thanks I might look into that. This is the first Android phone I haven't needed to root or install another ROM on it.

There is a couple workarounds for this situation. Easiest and best way I like to go at it is just download "gl to sd" from the market. Pretty simple directions, basically it allows you to dl your app then for all gameloft games like 9MM, MW3 etc..and even some other huge extra data games it lets you move the huge extra data download to your external sd card and play the games as normal. It You wont notice any difference in speed, graphics, etc... I've saved myself about 8-9gigs so far easily on internal sd. If your a heavy game player or even occosional but dont want to bother copying files back and forth etc.. Make sure you go with a 32gig ext sd card. My 16gig started filling up very quickly once I found this program .
Any questions with the app let me know, the instructions are a little vague, but if you read reviews ppl explain in detail in case any of it confuses you, but its really pretty easy.
Have fun!
I believe tibu has a batch operation that'll move to sd. Not sure if it move to internal or external tho.
Thanks this sounds promising.

im using link2sd right now, works pretty well.
> If your not an advance user, or you dont like scripts, use link2sd, basic and you'll get what you need, there is no best on this part, they all do the same. end of story.
S2E, Only works with cm7 and cm9

I vote for link2sd; relatively simple and has the potential of infinite "internal" memory.
Also when you mount your sd card to a PC, the apps on the link2sd partition are not mounted with the whole sd card..
S2e does the same, relatively simple to do,partition sdcard than select which box you want ticked than reboot but I've heard its not good to select the data/data option but I've never had any problems..

Low application storage

Keep getting the warning for low "phone storage" but it's actually my application storage. From what I understand it's the /data/data "partition." Is there any mod or tool that will work for this phone in particular that can increase (by using other storage, like sd) the size of this partition?
Thanks

Link2SD? Requires a partitioned SD card, though.
