Goggle maps force closes after 5 minutes of use. I guess it is trying to find a GPS fix and gets mad.
also is there a way to set an Android id? I have an SQL editor installed

Try enabling mock locations in development settings.. Maps works fine for me. For navigation you will need an app like GPS tether.

Since applying the official o2 2.2 update, the navigation app just sits on the "checking navigation availability" I have tried numerous times but it refuses to work. Any ideas?

did you apply the tweak? You'll find it here too
I have an official 2.2 unlocked Streak and I updated Google Maps and since then navigation doesn't work. I uninstalled the gmaps update and it works again (but no voice navigation). Strange.
Does anyone know of a fix for this?

It is my observation that google navigation is looking for the recent addresses that it navigated. Since there are no such addresses when updated it just sits there. To circumvent this problem, go to google voice search and say 'navigate to ....' some place. It opens Navigation with possible address filled in. You should be set from this point onwards.
Hi there, does any body know of an app for gps navigation and maps that doesn't need data to work. Useful if you got lost without coverage.
Thanks

I use Google Maps, it's storing maps in automatic since a few updates ago.
If you have cached at least the zone you're in with most levels of zoom you won't have any problem.
If not Maverick and Atlas (for pc, to create and store maps) is a valid alternative
If you were asking for a way to find your position withouth having a map cached in your sd and withouth data connection, i think you won't find any application able to do so.
i use navdroyd or mapdroyd, the former has routing while the latter has none
OruxMaps can use offline maps. I use finnish maps from retkikartta.fi but those are probably useless to you.
Thanks for all the replies. Will try each one and see which works
For me

NDrive works fine.
I use it a lot!
There's a lot of links at Google which guide you to install and use that.
I didn't realize google maps has an offline mode now. I tried it recently but it won't ever finish a search when you type in a destination. I think it's trying to get my location first?
Is there a workaround?
Hmm no replies. Actually I had google maps launched previously before I went offline. I just tried to launch it now and it times out saying this application requires a working network connection.
Then how is one supposed to use google maps offline mode?!
You must run Google maps once with a network connection after it is upgraded to re-cache maps. It only caches maps, not any place or other data.

Ok maybe I was premature in trying this feature. But now the latest version of google maps says it has offline mode. I chose an area and downloaded. The area I chose was somehwhat big, my city and immediately surrounding cities. All the street names are there but yet it's still not searchable. I thought maybe it doesn't have the address numbers but even searching by intersections doesn't work.
So the offline mode is just a simple map to look at?!
Yes.

GPS is independent of wifi or your data service...
google maps should work but if not then there are several others in the Play store... MapFactor being one of them
doesnt have navigation, but Maverick is nice for world GPS mappings
Stock Google Maps
Depending on the version you have, stock Google Maps can cache maps for offline use. If you're using the (slightly) older version, you can do it easily by pressing the menu key, selecting Make Available Offline and selecting the area you want to cache.
If you're using the newest Maps, you'll notice the option is gone. Instead, you'll have to zoom in over the area you want to cache, and type in "ok maps" into the search bar and press enter/go. A translucent dialog at the bottom of the screen should appear notifying you that the map has been cached.
Once cached; you should not require a internet connection to use maps. Though I have never actually used it offline, so I am not entirely sure what the experience is like. Also note that this does not save satellite/aerial imaging. Only navigational maps.
Hi
Having been frustrated by more recent versions of Google maps and losing the navigation icon from the drawer I have been constantly using the old Google Maps 6.14.4.
Problem was that Google Play was constantly offering to update it, annoyingly.
Titanium backup can detach apps from Play but it's not permanent.
I have now re signed the app and attach it here. I am using it with 4.4.2 kit kat and it's running fine. No update offers and no errors or FCs.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/dttm1vnwzrzqbog/Maps_6.14.4a.apk
Please give it a try.
If you have Maps installed you will need to use titanium backup to uninstall it before installing this version. Otherwise this will just not install.
I hope someone finds it useful...

I don't like the navigation function in the maps myself. What is this old way with navi you speak of? I am curious.
The old version here has the added icon for navigation. It is a blue arrow like icon in the app drawer.
Using this icon you have a number of options. One of these is the option to go to the map. It is in the upper right side the screen. Selecting this will take you initially a 2d map. You can then select to have the traffic layer displayed.
As soon as you start driving the 2d map will change to 3d just like a normal sat nav with the benefit of having traffic.
The new versions of Google maps require you to have a destination set in navigation before you have 3d with traffic.
When I drive to work each day I don't need to be navigated there but I need to see how the traffic is. I travel 30 miles around the London orbital every day to work!

I remeber that there was a version which had a different signature, and thus you could install it alongside with current version of google maps.
Can you reupload it please if possible?

Please re-upload this for us.
Thanks.
I used an apk that I pulled from another Xda thread. It is named something other than Google and works perfectly. Same as 6.14.1
Will post as soon as I figure out how.
