I didn't realize google maps has an offline mode now. I tried it recently but it won't ever finish a search when you type in a destination. I think it's trying to get my location first?
Is there a workaround?
Hmm no replies. Actually I had google maps launched previously before I went offline. I just tried to launch it now and it times out saying this application requires a working network connection.
Then how is one supposed to use google maps offline mode?!
You must run Google maps once with a network connection after it is upgraded to re-cache maps. It only caches maps, not any place or other data.

Ok maybe I was premature in trying this feature. But now the latest version of google maps says it has offline mode. I chose an area and downloaded. The area I chose was somehwhat big, my city and immediately surrounding cities. All the street names are there but yet it's still not searchable. I thought maybe it doesn't have the address numbers but even searching by intersections doesn't work.
So the offline mode is just a simple map to look at?!
Yes.

I just installed ultima 5. now, my phone cannot find my location.
in facebook, when i tries to check-in, it keeps saying loading and does not find the places tht is near me.
in foursquare, when i go to places, it says 'your location could not be found. make sure your gps or network location services are turned on, then try refreshing again'.
under location and security, ive already checked use wireless networks and use gps satellites. before i installed ultima 5, it used to work. so, please help me.
Can you set your location in google maps? Most of the apps I use can't find the location unless it's set in google maps.
What do you mean by setting my location in google maps ?
I mean does gps work on google maps on your phone?

yes, it works on google maps. google maps can find my location.
Sorry to say this buddy but it has to be the rom. You said it yourself it works fine prior to installing it. I tried that rom for one day but I didn't like the fact that the battery was getting too hot even on minimal use. Try reflashing the rom again after a clean install of 2.1 then wipe/ clear everything in xrec. If it still doesn't work, post your problem on the rom thread and see of other users have that problem.

Q: Is there anyone who knows what map areas are available Offline with Google Maps 6.9.0 for Android?
Background: With Google Maps 6.9.0 it is possible to make certain maps areas available offline. As for Europe, this seems to be dependant upon where you attempt to make this happen. Most of Croatia (except Zagreb) seems to be unavailable, same goes for most of Italy except major cities.
The only way seems to select area with sea as most part of it. It's weird, I don't know if this is a bug or no...

Thank you, just what I was looking for.
Wonder why Italy and Croatia is missing, though...
downgrade
Is there any possibility do make a downgrade?
The offline maps aren´t aviable in Brazil.
How could they make a mistake like that.
ridiculous!
with the previous version i saved a couple of offline maps without problem. after upgrade, all the savings has lost, plus i cant get map for italy now, and i am going there for travel in a week time! how ridiculous!!
downgrade worked for me
I got hit with this too, I don't have a cell plan in Brazil and was relying on cached maps to get around.
To fix it I completely uninstalled the Maps application. Then searched for version 6.8.1 apk on google. There were several places to download it from. I then side-loaded it on my SD card and it is working again with the Labs feature.
What does side loaded mean?
yeah, its possible, and I have downloaded a map and used it as well..

Offline mode doesn't work very well; if you set data connection off and restart your phone for instance you will not longer be able to access saved maps.
I was just looking on google for Jellybean apk's and found the HTC Desire S thread and decided to try out some of the new jellybean apk's to see if they would work. I am currently downloading an offline map of my hometown so I know at least maps works. If anyone else wants the apk's the link is here.

I will be testing more as I go, but i'm more of a lurker than a poster so I won't be updating this topic. I just didn't see anyone posting that they tried the apk's yet with stock ICS. If someone has posted this already, just remove my topic and i'm sorry.
Edit: Finding out most of the apk's don't work. Maps does though.
Nice find! I can't believe it didn't occur to me to look sooner! Thank you!

Good find...
That's pretty cool about the offline maps.
via eVoLTE.
I just tried out the offline maps to no avail. I turned off all data and left gps on. Enetered in a destination within the offline map area and it just said I needed an active connection. :/ So much for the only reason I was getting the Nexus 7. Gps for my car.

maps has had that option for a while now, but it has been a "google labs" option.
now, with JellyBean its coming out of "labs" beta and being integrated into the app.

You have to have an active data connection to dl the map you want to be cached for offline use you cannot kill your data and then search a map. Hope that makes sense

While you are correct, I believe he said he downloaded a portion of the map, and THEN killed data. The problem arose when he tried to search for an address inside the area--it seems searching still requires a network connection.
Hello everyone,
I am going to sooke, BC for few days. I was looking for gps app which can work offline. I am not sure if google maps does it. Please let me know if there is any app. I have map factor but again not sure that it will work.

GPS is independent of wifi or your data service...
google maps should work but if not then there are several others in the Play store... MapFactor being one of them
doesnt have navigation, but Maverick is nice for world GPS mappings
Stock Google Maps
Depending on the version you have, stock Google Maps can cache maps for offline use. If you're using the (slightly) older version, you can do it easily by pressing the menu key, selecting Make Available Offline and selecting the area you want to cache.
If you're using the newest Maps, you'll notice the option is gone. Instead, you'll have to zoom in over the area you want to cache, and type in "ok maps" into the search bar and press enter/go. A translucent dialog at the bottom of the screen should appear notifying you that the map has been cached.
Once cached; you should not require a internet connection to use maps. Though I have never actually used it offline, so I am not entirely sure what the experience is like. Also note that this does not save satellite/aerial imaging. Only navigational maps.
can anyone recommend an offline maps app that will work with the i5800 running cyanogenmod 7.2 mtd? all the ones i've tried won't load any maps. can access menus etc but the map is always just a black screen. google maps has no problem displaying maps and satellite images, but only with an active data connection.
i know there are old topics about offline maps for this phone, but the latest versions of the apps mentioned in them won't necessarily work on it anymore, so i'm wondering specifically which versions of offline maps apps work for you, so i can then find an .apk of that version. thanks!
Google maps can save maps for offline use.
Anyway, I am using Here beta from Microsoft. But I doubt that can run on Galaxy 3.
isn't only recent versions of google maps that allow saving maps for offline use? pretty sure i had to use quite an old .apk to get google maps to install.
