I was experimenting trying out Lupohirps ICS port and I forgot to do a factory reset before flashing I was running CM7 Nightly build #31
Imagine my surprise when after only wiping Dalvik the phone booted and loaded up ICS with all my apps and data still intact saved me having to reload all my apps and data from my backups.
Have found some other bugs in ICS one major one is total system lockups if you use ADW Launcher EX.
I just thought you may like to know that you don't have to Factory Reset to install Lupohirps ICS if your running CM7 Nightly just wipe dalvik cache and it will work did for me.
Lucky dude...
U are indeed lucky dude..
Anyway just see if you are getting any fc..

As you all know, before installing new rom we we have to wipe data and cache in recovery...
But do we have also to wipe dalvik's cache?
As you read on every ROM thread, it is advisable to do a CLEAN wipe meaning all of it before installing a different rom. I personally don't find any difference between wiping and not wiping.
When upgrading CyanogenMOD nightlies wiping is pointless, and a waste of time. When switching between Sense-based ROMs and CM etc. then a full wipe is recommended, but not always needed. Wiping dalvik cache will never hurt
Just a thought here, but isn't DC in /data ? So if you wipe data you wipe DC as well, no?
I've been flashing Mdj Droid L2.1.110210 rom but the only thing I am seeing is the HTC screen for over 10 minutes. Is there anybody helps me to solve this issue? I am newbie so I cannot post in Mdj Droid L2.1.110210 topic.
Thank
I always wipe because it cleans the dust. As GrammarFreak said, when switching between CM nightlies, it is pointless as of the minor changes that come with them. But switching to an entirely new ROM (like stock -> CM) I thin it is better to wipe everything. The cause: Android DO collect junk, and a clean system is always nice.
Regarding contact, sms and other app data: backup to phone and cloud, simple as hell.
thanks for the advice. so if you flash anew rom, do u lose all ur apps every time? i'm flashing ics on my g2 alpha 8 right now. so i will find out soon enough

In my experience (using a HTC Desire HD) you only lose your apps and settings when you perform a full-wipe before flashing a new rom. When you update your rom without wiping, your settings and apps are not removed. However, I personally like to do a full-wipe before flashing a rom, because it clears out al the dust and gives you a fresh new phone.
If you don't want to lose your apps and data, but you do want to wipe, you can offcourse always use Titanium Backup to make a backup of the apps and data.
Just do it! It's free (costs only a slightly longer startup the first time after you wipe dalvik)!

in my experience, this happens when you dont clear the cache prior to updating the rom. in my case, I had to re-apx mine, since I didnt figure this out until I had tried the factory rom. good thing I had the SBK and CPUid, or it would have been even a more painful experience!
Hi,
I'm running CyanogenMod 7 Nightly on an Incredible S. I was on Nightly #68 and today I updated to #89. For the update, I backuped my rom, wiped the Data and Dalvik cashes as is recommended. When the update was done, I had to re-setup my phone from the Android's first boot screens as well reinstall all of my apps and set the options like they were beforehand manually.
I'd like to know if there is a way to make updating roms a little quicker by not having to go through this whole process every time? ie: update rom and still have the phone as it was. I could understand that it may not be possible when going from CM to Virtuous Unity for example. But I'm wondering if I'm missing a step when it comes to simply updating the version of a single rom?
Thanks for any help!
You need a partition with the stable ROM and one to experiment with Nightlies.
lifehacker.com/5826050/how-to-dual-boot-multiple-roms-on-your-android-phone
There is no need to do any wipe going from one nightly to the next.
If you do wipe don't wipe data and you don't have to do set up again.
I do recommend titanium backup for times that you have to do full wipe.
Alright, thanks guys! I should be good to go now!

So I have seen quite a few threads about installing ICS but I have yet to see anyone install it over MIUI. Is there a suggested method for this?
I couldnt get it to install over MIUI, it kept throwing me an error, I restored to cm7 and it flashed fine
Thanks for the reply, I don't have a backup of cm7 as the wifi never worked for me on it. Is there really any reason to goto cm7 first?
To answer my own question I guess I could run a Titanium Backup restore of MIUI on CM7 then upgrade... So that should be one benefit

I installed cm9 over miui. Did wipe dalvic, wipe cache, wipe data/factory reset, installed from sdcard. Worked fine.
Note - I hadn't done a lot in miui, so I didn't mind wiping and reinstalling apps.
Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the reply not sure doing a wipe then fresh install really counts as installing over miui but good to know it worked out if it comes to that... I am still on the fence about installing alpha 0.5 as I am really happy with how I have miui setup at the moment...
I'm a huge MIUI fan and have been running it on my Mytouch 4G for a couple months now. I put it on my HP Touchpad and couldn't stand it after a couple days. It was just way too buggy. I installed ICS a few nights ago and it is running beyond what I expected! You could try both and back them up then switch back to the other if you don't like one.

What I meant was, I was running miui. It was my 1st android install.
When cm9 alpha0 came out, I installed it as I said by cwm wipe; then flashed cm9.
I like cm9 a lot better than miui. Feels more like a real tablet app. Please don't ask me to define that .
Hello,
I switched from WanamLite for Foxhound and I must say everything is working great. No more freezes, crashes and my geolocation ifnally is accurate again.
I followed all installation instructions, format /system, factory reset wipe cache and dalvik and installed.
The only problem Im having is that some of the systemtray icons arent working. The ones that are working is random. So im able to toggle GPS but not to toggel wifi, an hour later wifi is working but data is disabled. etc.
Anyone has any idea what this could be?
sometimes the package dosnt open fully so if ur facing prblm then its better to hav a fresh installation,,an also many will carry tb backup all the way frm stock to custom roms so even tht gives a prblm to many out here......cheeeeerz

I never restore anything else but applications when I'm switching roms, not systemdata whatsoever. Would it be possible to flash a different systemui instead of reinstalling the rom? Or could I just reinstall the rom without resetting the system all over again, spent hours to rebuild my settings etc ><
Why don't you redo the procedure once again, wipe cache then dalvik, format system then flash the package via recovery.
Errors could happen, so no harm if you try it again.
If not try the latest wanam 10.6 version it is almost perfect or you can always go back to a stock ROM and use Siyah kernels, I'm on XXLPQ with Siyah b6, very stable tremendous battery life. (you should test different kernels though and stick to the best)

For some reason I always have troubles with my geolocation and gps working very slow or not at all on different kernels then stock. Thats why I switched to foxhound. Ill redo the complete procedure tonight to see if it helps.
Thanks for the info so far.
I have been running MIUI on an x2 for a few days and I went to use my Camcorder and it crashes. I tried several different ones and it just keeps failing. It starts to record and then does a FC. I downloaded different cameras and they do the same thing. I even tried some different once through downloading the Apks from this device and from the Atrix.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Probably a silly question but did u manually do a reboot, or go into applications and clear the catch and data. Also when you installed the miui did u do the three wipes first?

Lol good question. I have done these. I can try to reflash it?
Sent from my Milestone X2 using XDA
Lol, sorry if that was obvious but I know I usually over look the easy stuff. I have only ever had these problems when I didn't wipe the data and catch after I flashed
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA
I am going to try to do that. Thank you for trying though.
No prob hope u get it

From what I have been able to read its something to do with permission settings for the camcorder. If I can just get help how to change this to the proper settings that would be great!!
This is a bug that has been with the rom since the beginning.
I hope you find a workaround.
If you follow Aceoyame on twitter you can see his progress on the next release based on Dragonkillerz work on cm9. Some are saying this summer, just in time to take some video
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA
lol, Yeah from what I have been reading I think its about the permissions. But I am trying to figure out exactly what file.
I wanted to give an update. Talked with Ace and he said there will be an update out to fix this sometime in the next week. Great news!

That is great news. Good on ya mate.

I got tired of the camcorder not working and wanted to switch roms.
To make a long story short, I am back on MIUI beta and the camcorder seems to be...
working now!
What I did (or what I can remember I did, because you know how it goes SBF'ing, flashing roms, and clearing caches over and over again)
Booted into BSR and made back-up of the MIUI setup I was running (with camcorder not working)
SBF'd to 2.3.4 kernel factory reset / cleared cache and dalvik cache
*did not root yet*
rebooted into stock recovery and flashed 2.3.5 kernel.
Then did Zerg Rush Root method.
Installed BSR(not the cm7 version) the original.
Booted into BSR and factory reset / cleared cache and dalvik again...
Flashed Eclipse 2.2 custom rom.
Booted into op system / skipped everything / got to homescreen checked wifi to see error when trying to toggle on/off.
Got pissed, took a drink of a nice northwest local IPA and said Im going back to MIUI and Im doing it with 2.3.5 kernel installed.
This is where I got a little fuzzy... but I think this is what I did...
Did a operating system factory reset (just internal sd card)
Booted back into op system I think I had to re-install BSR (original)
Booted into BSR and restored my latest backed up MIUI.
When I got back to MIUI I noticed WIFI was working and when I went to Camera APP switched to video it didnt FC.
Instead it recorded a 25 second video with no problems. I have been playing with it ever since with no problems.
I hope this may help you in your quest to get camcorder in MIUI.
