I currently use FriendCaster. I like the functionality and it works very well.
I like the official Facebook app aswell, but it drained so much battery for me, always running in the background, even if i disabled all kind of sync, updates, etc. It even ran in the background when i didn't have enabled data/WiFi, and also after i force closed it. It would just pop right back up.

True. I was surprised to see notifications waiting though sync was off. Uninstalled immediately.
I just use the mobile webpage for now, not much different from the app, except that it can't upload photos (which i do by emailing to Facebook), and it can't sync contacts (which i do with Samsung social hub)

Facebook for HTC Sense isn't really an app, just integration into Sense so you can post from your people app. The Facebook for Android is the official app, and it's probably the best because you can do everything you need from it.

I do like the official Facebook app's features but, like Moonbloom, I've found that it's a drain on my battery. Looking for something with comparable or even better features that might be less taxing on the battery.
The stock Facebook app is pretty functional and even displays "timeline" if your friends were unfortunate enough to get switched to it. Maybe the drain is coming from your sync settings. My battery does well, though I don't have my Facebook syncing constantly.
Another thought...as far as battery goes...if you have the widget running all the time, it may affect your battery. I just touch my FB icon and open it when I need it. I don't need to see my friends' status updates all day long. If something posted on my wall or by someone I'm following, it notifies me in the notification bar.

Ooh, how do I do that?
I didn't mention that I'm running CM7.
Another bizarre thing, I had two notifications saying that Tweetdeck and Zeam had misbehaved at 2.25am. Now I can categorically say that I was sound asleep at that time so why should that happen?

Didn't work, mate
I uninstalled Facebook, twitter, tweet deck, yahoo mail and watchdog and it's made the world of difference.
Shame cos they were good apps

All,
I've reinstalled Facebook (refresh every four hours), Twitter (refresh every 15 minutes, thought I had it on 4 hours) and Yahoo Mail(no sync), battery life is OK.
I've also noticed that winamp widget takes a lot of power so I've uninstalled that.
Load Monitor is still showing high values for some reason but I'm happy with the battery so far.
I'm now going to switch off refresh on Twitter and Facebook to see what happens.
More as it comes in!
I am noticing that every time i unlock the phone and go to Agenda or Bookmark widget they start refreshing themselves. This did not happen on Evo 4G. Shouldn't it refresh in the background and be available for me to look at when i need to without waiting for the widget to refresh?
Please let me know if you see the same behavior.
anybody? bump

For agenda, do you mean that it connects to internet and pulls the google calendar data in? If I'm not mistaken, that shouldn't happen, since google calendar uses cloud-2-device technology. But I've never used that one (I used smooth calendar and, recently, native spb shell 3d widget).
Perhaps what you are seeing is simply widgets refreshing themselves from the their main apps, which already have the data needed.
it never happened on evo 4g. i think there is some issue with evo 3d, and i hope it's fixed in OTA or maybe someone know whats up and can recommend solution.

If you want an answer, you need to provide mode detail.
If you mean the widgets yes they did, I had an EVO 4G for 11 months since it came out and it did to make sure you didn't add any other appointments maybe you never notice
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d
i thought that widgets are supposed to be running all the time in the background collecting all the data for fast retreival. this does not seem to be fast. I only have 2 calendars and it takes 5-7 seconds to refresh. why doesn't it do it when the phone is woken up. why wait till i go and look at the widget. Same is happening with bookmarks. seems like a glitch.

Np man, my friend went to the sprint store to do it in a store demo and it worked lol

I read about this and thought about trying it. It's always annoyed me that I never got any facebook notifications, because I thought I was supposed to...ya know?
...but the more I thought about it the more I realised how irritating it would be to actually get all of my facebook notifications in my notification bar...and how much more annoying it would be to have a notification sound to go with it....and I don't even have a huge friend list...
Even though notifications was a huge problem with fb app, its still not that useful of an app compared to like bb or ios versions. Ive found friendcaster works way better nd always shows notifications and takes u directly to the appropriate place in the app. It does forward u to the touch or mobile site for a few things here nd there but overall way ahead of official app!

I like friendcaster a bit better than the standard app as well. Still, it could be much better.
Haha...this is funny because I posted these exact same findings on another Android site (the "Central" one) last Friday, August 5th and by Sunday the mods had tested it, put up a video, shot it to the front page and made a Sticky of it in the Applications forum. I can tell you that it works. Facebook for Android basically piggy backs on the Blackberry for Android permissions. There's approximately about 95% functionality with this. One of the things that doesn't work correctly for example are Poke notifications. You get the push notification but when you click on that particular one nothing happens. It's a very minor issue in my book.
What is this Facebook?
Don't worry guys, After Nov 5 Facebook is no more.

My recent phone history: BB Curve>BB Tour>HTC Hero>HTC EVO 4G>Samsung Epic>HTC EVO3D
I just checked and I still have the BB permissions on my FB Account Setting and I'm not getting push notifications.
I will try to sign in on a BB when I get access to one because I remember getting push notifications on my Hero when I had it, which was directly after I had the Tour.
I don't know if this is phone or app related but push notifications rarely work. The only app that seems to be working is MSNBC,
Facebook no notification of new messages etc
Twitter no notifications of mentions, PM's etc
Google+ Notifications only when you open the app
Anyone else have these issues? As I say the news ones like MSNBC,CNN seem to work fine the social networking ones don't and they did all work fine on my Desire S, Infact Google+ used to be a right torture

try clearing the cache and data of the apps in settings applications and see what happens
Mate I'm the same. I've cleared cache etc. but it never does anything. I'm running XXKI4 rooted with cf root then with stock kernel just to remove the yellow triangle. Gmail never sends push, I have to manually refresh, twitter never send notifications, market never does update notifications, even the ones set for auto, the only one that works is facebook. This one works flawlessly for me. I kind of got used to manually checking, but wish I didn't as coming from iphone, as bad as the notifications were, at least I got them!!

I'd agree with this, I never had an issue with push on the iPhone and on the news apps I got alot more, MSNBC you could of got 3-4 a day, same with CNN, On the SGS2 I get maybe 1 every other day and with the pull down menu being black and the writing of the push being black you can't read it anyway so all rather pointless.

Push for Facebook hasn't worked for me on any rom i've tried yet. CM7 KI8 and a few others. Only app that works flawlessly is FotMob a soccer scores app.

Yeah tried it to no avail
1. You need to enable background data
2. You need to enable auto-sync
(both in settings -- accounts)
3. If your use juice defender, it turns off wifi and data when the screen goes off. So unless you set up a schedule or rule you won't get push.
4. If you use a task killer, when the app is killed you won't get push
5. With Android you don't get true push (its an Apple thing). The true equivalent push are apps that use autosync (ie google apps and twitter). The other apps even facebook simply run in the background and it transmits background data directly. This is less efficient than push but it does get the job done.
I have no idea what's going on, and its extremely aggravating. I never use Facebook other than for when notifications show up, each of then pictures are taken of stats on a brand new s3 with a brand new AOKP ROM, and I have not even opened Facebook after a full battery charge and a reboot, and it still demolishes my battery.
I need help here, its driving me up the wall

Try it the old fashioned way
Delete Facebook and reinstall it. I had the same problem with Google Maps once and it worked that way.
Reinstalled and same behavior.
I even force stopped the app out of curiosity, and its still draining, even tho its still stopped

If he uses Greenifiy he won't receive any notifications from Facebook because the App will be hibernated.
That's right, Facebook will only sync when you open it, this is what fast Facebook does (which is very popular as it's a lightweight ver different version). Facebook is a big hogger but if you want instant updates, guess you'll have to put up with it. You could try clearing data, running sdmaid on a regular basis and clearing Facebook files, that might help.
