[Q] Downgrading to Gingerbread - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I jumped in and flashed an ICS leaked rom onto my phone, It runs well enough but I have a nagging feeling it's not right and I want to go back to gingerbread and as if it was fresh out the box. I flashed XXLPB rom, kernel and Modem a few days ago. I have found what I think are all the files I need.
I am trying to download this from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278&highlight=stock+rom but multiupload isn't working
XWKI4

Is downgrading as simple as flashing all these parts onto my phone through Odin?
I don't care about data loss and stuff, I have an old CWM back up before I went ICS.
(Ps, I spent about 5 minutes searching and couldn't find anything definitive so if this already exists then I apologise)

Yes it's that simple!

And a final thing, I take it an XXLPB modem will not work with a XXKI4 rom/kernel?

[Q] Installing Stock Samsung Firmware on phone with 3 UK Firmware

Hi there, hope I could have a moment of your time.
I am hoping to upgrade from 3 UK 2.3.3 to Samsung Stock 2.3.4, here is my current information:
PDA: I9100 XWKF4
Phone: I9100 NEKF2
CSC: I9100 H3GKF1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF4-CL280512 [email protected] #2
Network Information: Pay Monthly 3 UK, but Unlocked
Is it possible to do this and still have a fully functioning phone, and if so which, PDA, Phone and CSC files do I require?
P.S. I have both ODIN and Kies installed and phone is currently rooted. I have attached two images with all relevant information to this message.
If your phones rooted, just grab a CWM flashable zip, boot into recovery and flash from there.

sorry but what does this mean? Can I not just flash a firmware using odin?
Everything you need to know is here
Go for KG6 or KH3 as they are the newer 2.3.4 roms and known to work/be good.
You may have to manually enter your APN settings, from here

[Q] Galaxy S II Firmware Upgrade 2.3.4 Help!

I have been researching the net on this and the posts in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
I haven't been able to post in there as I am a new user, but if someone can help me with this, it would be great.
I'm trying to upgrade my firmware to XXKH3 - Android 2.3.4.
My current version is:
PDA: I91000XWKE7
PHONE: I9100XXKE4
CSC: I9100OPSKE4
My Galaxy S II is rooted and it's on the OPTUS network in Australia.
My question is, how should I go about it?
Do I download the XXKH3 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/C4DRUIJTLL and place that in PDA and PHONE in Odin?
And for CSC do I get this: Optus OPSKG1 CSC: http://www.multiupload.com/EPWZTIMS1F and place it in CSC?
I want to be able to use the OPTUS network on XXKH3, but without OPTUS bloatware. I'm just not sure which files to get so I can be with OPTUS on an Australian firmware if that makes any sense.
My last question is, would this then wipe my data? Or not?
I appreciate any help on this.

you are referring to the right thread. clear instructions are given on that thread.
choose the PDA option.
CSC has nothing to do with what languages the firmware supports and it will not add keyboard language support either.
You don't have to change the kernel or root or unroot to flash a new stock firmware.
You can then flash the kernel of your choice.
If you want the CF-root KH3 kernel. refer this thread
If you want to flash stock KH3 kernel you can also do that.
as far as operator bloatware is concerned search for operator specific bloatware removal scripts which can be executed using Gscript app . or a simpler option would be to freeze or uninstall the bloatware apps using Titanium back up Pro.
Thank you for the fast reply.
So pretty much all I need to do is put the XXKH3 Stock Kernel in the PDA option and that's it. So the OPTUS network will not be affected correct?
Then root it and I'm done?
Thanks again!

Excellent. Thanks.
I guess my last question is, by doing this, putting the XXKH3 in the PDA option, will this wipe my data?
Should I back up?
Back up apps with Titanium Pro

Alright will do. Thanks for all your help guys!
let me know how you get on,am severely tempted to flash new firmware just for a change!
Hm. I just put XXKH3 Stock Kernel in PDA and flashed it but my phone still says Android 2.3.3. I used the CF-root KH3 kernel as well to root it again.
What do I need to do to get it to Android 2.3.4? Do I have to place it in PHONE as well?
The ROM is 2.3.4, just about any ROM in original development is. What you are trying to flash is kernel. Best of luck.

Er, Kernel is kernel and firmware is firmware. Flashing the kernel won't update the firmware, just the kernel.
Alright I think I understand now.
Downloading the package, which should do it and I guess the stock kernel is used to root/rid yourself of the yellow triangle.

It went well, the phone is working great.
My data didn't get wiped.
Follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
Download the XXKH3 package.
I also used Titanium to backup my apps just in case and MyBackup Pro for contacts etc. but haven't needed to use it.
After you flash that (if you want to root the phone) go to this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 and get CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH3-v4.1-CWM4.zip. Put that in PDA and flash it.
To get rid of the yellow triangle, follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14283369&postcount=2.
That's it. Thanks for all your help guys!
ok so lets say I chose new stock firmware to avoid the triangle, then later wanted to be official, could i plug my phone into kies and updatd to official 2.3.4 without problems?
i would like to try oranges firmware without rooting the device and voiding my warranty!

After flashing with KI3

Hi,
Recently i've updated my SGS2 to the latest via Kies having the below version
Check using *#1234#
PDA: DXKI2
PHONE: DXKI1
CSC: XXKH1
Gingerbread 2.3.3
After that i've downloaded the stock firmware of XXKI3 from Intratech cause i want to use 2.3.5. And flash it via odin. Now when i check my setting, its reflected as the same above.
However when i go to settings, the kernel version change to XXKI3. And still Gingerbread 2.3.3.
I need advise what i did wrongly.
Thanks in advance

It seems that you downloaded and flashed a file that contained only the kernel and not the entire firmware. Their are two download links, one for the full firmware package and one for the stock kernel.
a kernel is different from a firmware.

I think I only flash the kernel. I'm now downloading the full firmware on XXKI3. So just to confirm that I should be flashing the full firmware of XXKI3 in order to get Gingerbread 2.3.5?
Thanks

Yes.full firmware is something 200+mb and kernel file is only 5+mb.
Be careful what version of ki3 you are going to flash
The original one has the new bootloader and you can not reset the counter with jig

Just bought the SGS2 yesterday. It came preloaded with 2.3.4. I'm in Europe so it's the Euro version.
Before starting to use the phone, I would like to update to 2.3.6 as I've heard that's the smoothest firmware and gives the best results in terms of battery life.
How can I update from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6? Does it matter what the PDA, CSC of my phone are currently, etc?
Please and thank you!

Mine came preloaded with 2.3.5, and i am also in europe (norway). But when i search for updates within the phone and Kies, i am getting no new firmware detected.
I am confused? Is 2.3.6 the latest for Galaxy S II?
Well I'm using darkys from KL1 with with KI4 modem and supercore 2.3.1 and perfect stable and customizable

Basics to update to ICS

I'm with optus Australia [and rooted] with Lite'ning Rom v2.7 XWLP7
To install the new "official" ICS through Kies what are the steps?
If i do install the ICS will i loose the root and the apps?
1: you need to flash the official stock version for your region/carrier
2: flashing ics will stock will remove root and your apps will get deleted if you wipe which you will for better working phone.
3: you can always flash using odin which is faster and as official as kies

You're on a custom ROM. So to get the update through Kies, you will have to flash back to a completely stock firmware that has the appropriate CSC for your region. Sounds like for you that would be the latest Optus branded stock firmware for Australia. It's around several places... search for it.
OR... you could just flash the official ICS yourself through Odin. Clearly you've flashed a firmware before, as you're on Lite'ning ROM.

Any stock firmware update, either through Kies or Odin, will cause a loss of root. But not necessarily the apps. Those should stay - UNLESS if you install yourself via Odin, you happen to download a firmware package that is a wipe package. But it's recommended you do a full wipe when upgrading major versions anyways.
Thanks for your replies
confused more..............yes i did use odin to install customs ROM but that was last year and never tried it again as i spent a week just to make the phone work.
I know i'm bit lazy but is there a easy solution. or a link to learn the basic

What is a firmware?
What is a Kernel?
Can we install any Kernel regardless of a firmware and ROM?

Look at the roll up sticky in the general section. It has nearly everything you're asking for.
