I've just been re-reading the official Sony comparison of their Gingerbread and ICS offering. This time I've had the chance to read more properly all the things they said. For the first time I actually have sympathy for Sony. The manufacturers bring out phones (e.g. SE) with the Xperias 2011 all running Gingerbread from the very start, then the next Google upgrade wipes out the phones. I owned the 2010 X10 Mini and our phone got wiped out the same way. It seems to me that we consumers do not benefit. Anyone who comes to this forum is already a bit of tech. nut, we are a very small population of the whole market, of course we want to try what's new and hot. But in this blog, Sony is explicitly saying that ICS is much, much more demanding on system resources and that we will definitely see a fall in performance, they clearly reference longer boot up time, apps force closing and stalling as well as poor video performance for different reasons that they explain in the blog.
http://developer.sonymobile.com/wp/...nical-differences-between-gingerbread-and-ics
Now I want to wait before I upgrade and check out the news. A few new icons and wallpapers is NOT good enough reason for me to upgrade. Better battery is a good reason to wait, which in that blog, Sony says you will get with Gingerbread over ICS. Do we really benefit here? Do we have to buy a new phone every year now, because Google is bumping up the demands of Android, like Microsoft did with Windows Vista? Windows 7 has less requirements than Vista, only slightly, and 8 has the same requirements as 7 so at least we could use the same laptop/pc for a few years. With Google, the way they are doing this is screwing us over I think.
For you, stay with Gingerbread, move to ICS, not sure or want to wait?
Ray users say they havent experienced any major bugs... Battery is definitely poor for now.....

I think on the minis and active devices we have the advance of having a smaller resolution area while having almost the same hardware as the other xperia 2011
Sent from my SK17i using XDA
They are really both very good points: we can look to the current Sony beta roms for more clues and it is true, our smaller screen being powered by the same CPU is an advantage. Perhaps we Mini users will have the least trouble amongst the 2011 Xperias?
Gingerbread would still be the most dominant OS, due to its stability on most phones,
having a new OS or phone is not always the best option.
I really thank the devs here in XDA, they are keeping old phones alive,
giving us a chance to have a taste of the new flavor and further improving stock OS on current phones.
I just recently read about the Xperia S Rom ported to Xperia X10 here, how cool is that...?
I'll choose the custom ICS rom.. sony and other manufacturer has done nothing but giving us all those bloatware while calling it "feature" rather than craps. + I see upgrade as change in UI, but sony's ICS UI has not change much compared to GB
Sent from my Xperia Mini Pro using xda premium
you can always remove the bloatwares , though of course with custom roms we can do a lot of things which are still restricted even with a rooted stock rom

If you want a different UI, just use a different home.apk? Just saying...
But yea i'm with the OP on these thoughts, have had the same thoughts for quite some time now. The thing is, we can make ICS faster on our devices just as we did with GB, but... How stable will the non-stock ICS roms be? Honestly I would rather see MIUI roms derived from GB as a base than ICS. A lot more stable with less bugs. Even the MIUI roms aren't AOSP based (as are official MIUI releases), they are FXP based roms. So, all in all we are between Stock and FXP releases.
I am not bashing on people working on developing MIUI and various ICS based roms, but like the OP, i'd rather have stability over "new features", such as full HW acceleration, which can be triggered using a variable in GB too (mind you that uses more juice).
I am going to seriously think about moving Spartan Rom from stock GB rom as a source, to stock ICS as a source.
Even if the battery consumption, which in my list of priorities for a fully functional rom is the highest in the list, is sub-par, I wont be switching over to ICS personally.
@drumraden if you see about other devices there are lots of stable roms are available (mostly aosp based, even I am using a stable custom rom for my Xoom)
We just need to give time to the devs to come up with stable ice roms.

You don't get my point.
The only reason to build an MIUI from ICS sources, is for the **** of saying its ICS therefore updated.
Yeah as for battery drain, I'm afraid Sony says on that site above that battery will be less durable with official ICS. What a shame. The discussion here though is really making me thing about all of this.
Yeah I am seriously thinking of going back to gb as soon as there is a good miui rom I am right now on ics because there is only one really stable miui release for the lww and it is ics but i really prefer better battery life.
On the other hand I prefer ics over hb a thousand times on my tab but it has like 7 times the battery of my phone so I have no issue with that.
I'll prefer ICS when main apps start to requires ICS.
While the requirements surround the GB I'll stick with it.
But it's nice to know that if it occurs my phone will be ready.
That's why I bought my mini-pro.
Personally, I will first give it a try. Then we will see, if it deserves to stay on my LWW or not...
yup ... sure will giv official a try ... but the best rom on gb wud be miui .... is that project still going on or has been dumped ?
i think lasan is still currently working on the GB MIUI port...

I'm running Kamarush's ICS version for sk17i: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434001
and that works like a charm. all features that I need on a daily basis, it's really stable, and it's super fast, so if SE say it's more demanding, than that's just not true. All the roms here are so much faster than stock, because here people care about the roms. it feels like the big companies just put something together but never care to optimize it. android's biggest advantage is the custom stuff.
I do feel sorry for anybody running stock software though

One simple question... How much battery %/hour does the rom you have installed consume in standby mode with all radios except mobile turned off.

First of all, hello to everyone in this scene. This is an old phone but still quite amazing and I'm having loads of fun flashing stuff onto it.
I've been an android user for around 2 years, my first device was the GT-P1000 galaxy tab 7''. I've had a Galaxy Gio for about 1 year now and an Ace for the last 4 months. I've recently got my hands on a X10 (which has a broken screen and usb port ruined but still works ) and I've been trying ROMs for the last few weeks but I am unable to set for one.
I've tried CM10, CM9, Oodie Prime X MIUI, X10S, Feravolt's GB ROM and now I'm on M&M's MIUI. I'm just wondering what would the best ROM (on your opinion) be for this device in terms of smoothness, speed and functions. I'm in love with MIUI for a while and also CM7 but I think they don't perform that great on this device for some reason.
Now for a few questions:
Is there any way to make Cronmod int2ext+ work on this device?
What is the cause for the WLOD? I've had one for no reason apparently.
I've been searching for like a week, maybe I suck at searches but I can't find answers for these questions -.-'
Also, is it just me of the X10 seems to need to be handled more carefully than other devices when flashing stuff?
I guess I'm just a Noob at Sony devices, my experience with android is pretty much Samsung only even though I've messed a bit with Huawei, HTC and Alcatel in the past.
My pick for smoothness, speed and functions(basic)

For all those things (assuming you want video recording), you should go with a gb rom.

Ouhhh man...
This thread is so useless because theire exists so much different roms. Some of them are optimized for speed others are visually and other with other functions... You cant say that if you want GB then you have to use ... rom and if you want use ICS then use this one.
For example atm i dont know which ics rom i have to use because i cant find the right one for me... I tried Achtojan CM9 but it is very slow, scritch one isnt looking so good and i miss SE Apps and so on...
So in my opinion we could deleate this thread...
And in my opinion, its a personal preference, some will say one rom, some will say another, its like food, you may like some flavors, and some other you dont,so..... there is your answer.
Hi!
Ok.Ok. But for the daily users which rom suggesting for the customers? ( Quickliest rom, minimum USB tethering, best battery drying). So not for the developers but for the daily users what is the best. ( And without the GB / ICS / JB roms, - only what is the summary best.......)
So what is the preferred coocked rom for the daily users? ( THIS IS AN OLD PHONE!!!!)
Bests: Tamage
I know I shouldn't be answering this, but, I've tried (almost) all of the ROMs on this place and when you find one you like, every now and then comes another one, right now I am using advanced Xperia ROM, it's a stock based one, but I love it, I've been using it since release day and find it VERY stable, very good battery performance, I used to carry 2 batteries to last the day, finally I can do the same with brightness at max, I know it drains enery like crazy, however looks great with so much light and I can endure the whole day (with my two batteries of course) besides I can play kinda heavy games like Ingress, Plague Inc. just great
Hi!
This one? X10i_T-mobil 2.3.3_2.3.3.ftf It's too slow.......and pure... Original ROM.

Best GB Rom for me: Dixperia 8( <<-----this one for gaming) and Feralab v21 Unlimited( <---- beautiful)
Good ICS Rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1965154 CM9 from Achotjan...it's not the fastest but it has almost everything from Xperia S 4.0.4... you could even replace the lockscreen with the one from XPeria Z DD <-------- i'm using this one right now
Jelly Bean: Cm10 v18 is battery friendly, smooth and fast...but camcorder not working
THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS : TRY IT OUT
Zetra Lab Inc. rom gb stable fast simple
CM10 tryed
Hi,
For everybody! I tryed the [CM10] v9.3 + Kernel v20 and very-very good rom for our oldest X10.
Only I can suggest to try it! Greatest battery-friend and working the wifi, camera, GPS only
the camcorder not working! Few days I'm using it and better than GB rom!
Bests: Tamage
I haven't had my x10 for about 6 months, so I haven't tried any of the newer stuff.
I used oodie prime x miui primarily, and his cm7 v3 are both rock solid and full functionality.

Ive been using xperia u now 3 weeks first week with normal Ginger and now 2 weeks with normal ics. And i must say this lag is driving me crazy ive never used so laggy phone. Is there any good custom roms for this or are they laggy too? Factory reset doesnt help. Even my Nokia asha 311 is better than this but im not using it cos internet radio is so bad in it and its important to me. If there isnt any good roms should i just sell this and buy some nokia or samsung?
Did you find the lag in GB?

You should try the latest firmware for xu 6.1.1.b.1.100 its pretty fast...no lag.
about nednsr
Try jb 6.1.A.1.100 by pipi....it work.like charm...with greenify nd seeder app...more free ram.nd less lags...!!!
I've tryed some ROMs and the less laggy ones are:
CM9 (yet, with a little battery drain)
Ligux (same as CM9)
Terra Rom (pretty fast, but camera a little laggy)
Anyway, GB will mostly be faster than ICS or JB: first because it's lighter, and it has less display complexity, and lastly because JB uses a LOT of resources, it'll be always slower than GB
Hi guys. This is not a "best rom" thread. I'd like some advice please.
A couple of months ago I rooted my girlfriend's xpu because she complained it was slow. I sympathise because I have an s3 mini with similar chipset and roughly the same specs, yet even my original stock rom was faster and more efficient.
I tried jbexperience and freexperia cm9.1. Both aren't exactly what I expected.
She regularly uses Facebook, whatsapp, email and plays candy crush and jewel star. On cm9.1 her battery life is horrible even with greenify and the phone is unstable. The ram fills up very quickly and the phone frequently reboots. She also had problems with apps that use webcoreview force closing.
Now as you can probably tell, I'm a veteran rom flasher and have been doing it for a long time on various phones. My old wildfire buzz and my son's hero are rooted with custom roms and are generally smoother and more stable than the xperia u. They are old and the hardware is ancient.
So my question for you lovely, fair members of the xperia u group today is, can you please recommend a stable and battery friendly rom for the xperia u?
Please don't say "this rom is best" or "this thread is bad", etcetera..
I can't try them all as my girlfriend has far less patience for this than I do.
Thank you for your understanding and patience, and please be nice.

Yes of course bootloader is unlocked
Is there a specific supercharged kernel you're talking of?
If there are any other roms you feel are worth mentioning please do Thanks again

Almost sure there is nothing faster than the Gingerbread version as just the core is going to take less resources.
Anyway for me the stock ICS 6.1.1.B.1,1.100 firmware works pretty well. For that one I just installed it, rooted, and removed some bloatware (just the ones that came with the ROM from the phone provider that released that firmware and an app that my own phone provider installs and some other apps I don't use like office suite and one or too more (some are apps you can even uninstall without root), but I removed nothing from Xperia apps). I didn't even installed anything else to enhance performance, no greenify not lag seeder and I'm pretty satisfied with performance. Facebook sometimes doesn't work as good as I would like to but in my opinion that's more a problem of facebook app which is a **** than a problem of the phone OS.
The last official release 6.1.1.B.1.1.54 firmware is horrible but that 6.1.1.B.1.1.100 works pretty well. I just tested only two more ICS ROMs and they didn't satisfied me more than the stock. I really prefer to continue with stock firmware and as It works really good for me that's what I choose.
By the way I don't think the game you mention is something to worry about. It is not one with a high resources requirement in my opinion. So it will work pretty well in any ROM with good enough performance.
