Help a noob understand the gallery - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

First android device.
I can't figure out the gallery / storage system. It's like it's possessed.
No matter where I save stuff, if I go to the gallery or select a wallpaper, all I see is the stuff saved that day. Everything else is gone.
I see the date at the bottom with the arrows, but swipe or slide as I might nothing goes anywhere. I know the files are still there because I can see them when I brows the SD card or whatever.
What the heck is going on?

Read similar issues ob other devices. People are saying it can be a bug caused by finicky sd cards and recommend formatting.
Just formatted. Will see what happens.

try a quick format on your computer.

Formatted SD card. Realized that pictures on USB storage I put there yesterday still aren't showing up in gallery.
If I save a new file to usbstorage, it will show in gallery, but none of the other ones I saved there yesterday.
What the crap? Please help me understand the madness.

Thanks, Plano. Even after formatting I don't understand the bizarre behavior on internal storage?

Removed SD card completely and restarted. Still nothing showing up in gallery from internal storage, even the file I just put there five minutes ago.

I have not seen these issues before. Both Internal storage and SD card media should show up in the Gallery. When you restart it takes a minutes or so to scan and index the internal and sd card. Do you see it scanning? Sounds like something is corrupted.

try this:
Go to manage apps
select the "all" tab at the top
scroll down to media storage
hit the "clear data" button
restart and let the phone rescan all the media

Awww crap . . . corrupt . . . what's that going to entail?
Ok, here goes. SD card is still removed completely.
Restarting.
Rethink Possible.
Media scanner running...
Media Scanning Complete.
Media scanner running...
Media scanning complete.
(why did it run twice even with no card installed?)
Go to gallery. Nothing from usbstorage there.
Go to my files and confirm /usbStorage is full of images.
Take screen shot.
Go back to gallery.
Screen shots are there, but nothing from /usbStorage
Take screen shot.

Tried that. When I went to power down it said something about the media app stopping and the only option I had was to force close and then it continued to power down. Restarted, still did media scan twice. Same issue -- The two screen shots I just took are there. The wallpaper wizardrii stuff is there, but nothing else including the files from /usbStorage
Thanks for helping me with this. I have no clue what is going on . . .

Downloaded an app called QuickPic. It sees everything but gallery still does not.
Anyone???

Ran sdrescan.
Clear data in gallery and mobile media.
Restart.
Nothing.
Go to storage settings. Format usbStorage.
Restart.
Move images to usbStorage.
Nothing.
WTF??? Someone give me something here . . .
QuickPick sees everything. Gallery sees nothing.
Having to use a third party app to replace a stock one on a 24hr old phone seems like a pretty bad solution . . .

The USB storage folder isn't for your sdcard- that's the file location of a connected thumb drive/USB device. Your SD card is the external_SD folder...

Copy what's in your USB storage folder to the external_SD folder and the gallery will see it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

Thanks for the reply.
I get that . . . I thought the problem was with the SD card, but as you can see, it persists even on internal storage with the SD card being removed.

Ok . . .I think I get what you're saying.
Then what is the default folder for internal storage? If I wanted to export a picture from my DropBox to internal storage, where would I put it?
Thanks again.

I've never noticed a phone adding photos connected via usbStorage to the gallery. The phone knows that's a connected medium that will be removed. Throw those images onto the inserted SD card and they should show up.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

Put in your SD card. Then go into your my files app (file browser). The SD card is mounted by the phone as external SD. External SD will be the folder name.

Here.

If you don't have an SD card in and just want to put it on phones internal memory, just make a folder, for example, "Photos" in the / directory and put them here.

Sd card and music app

Anyone know why I can't see files and folders I added to my Sd card and why is it that I can't browse by artist in the sstock music app

I copied music directly to the /mnt/sdcard/ext_sd/ directory and now I have duplicates of albums. It's a pain. Anyone know how to add music so this doesn't happen?
A fix for duplicate titles in stock music app
I encountered this phenom the other night when using airsync to xfer tracks to the sd card instead of internal storage. Double twist warns that this is experimental, and sure enough, that's when things got off kilter. Long story short, I deleted the music directory on the sd card and then moved the untouched music directory from internal storage to the sd card. I then made sure that the music directory in the internal storage was truly empty. I then performed a clean cache followed by a reboot. Both doubletwist and the stock player are keyed to the sd card directory, and voila, no more duplicates.

I have no problems with the music app and the music files I copied onto my sd card.
All I did was make a "Music" folder on the external (?) card, the one that mounts second and is NOT named "HTC Storage". Copied my music in there so the next directory down is the band name (Music > PJ Harvey > [album]) and everything works as it should. When I went into the music app the phone scanned for my library, found everything, and I am able to switch between viewing by album, artists, songs etc. with no problem.
I had no idea how to get my music on there since there is no mention of it in the manual so I just tried that out and it worked.

Okay, so driving home tonight I went into PowerAmp to pick some music to play and I saw double listings for the albums. I had just been in the stock music app and not seen that but switched to PowerAmp because I had set the EQ in that. And I left it to see if it would play each song twice and it did.
Now I'm looking at it at home and I just noticed when I look at under the "folders" tab I see the duplicate listings and also see ".sounds" at the top with the dir listed as /sdcard/Spacephysics. The two directories that have music are /sdcard/ext_sc/Music (the folder I made) and /music. When I look at it under the "Library" tab I don't see duplicates unless I go into the albums and look at the song lists.
Stock app still fine.
I'm kinda anal when it comes to my music but just as Fera stated...created a general folder called "Music" and add sub-folders for each Artist and then each album. It would also help if you have the .MP3 tags correct so you don't have files all over the place.
That's what works for me at least.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW
What app are you using?
I'm not sure how these are tagged. I had just gotten my tagger all set up and started to get all my mp3s organized and tagged and then my laptop died. HDD was fine so I pulled it and got all the data copied off of it so hopefully I can grab my settings file for the tagger prog but haven't gotten back into mp3 organizing yet.
Do you know what causes the duplicates? I've been reading about apps not dealing with the external sd card properly, so is it just the case of the app needing to be updated and nothing we can do about this on our side?

Yea pretty much nothing can be done unless the app devs fix the issue or we get permanent root and can re-mount the SD cards however we see fit.

I've been using the stock app for my music currently and I have had no issues with duplicates except for newer files I haven't fixed the .mp3 tags on.
Edit: I just installed PowerAmp (the only other music player I will use besides stock) and I noticed my library was also showing duplicates. If you go under settings when viewing your folders you can select Menu->List Options->Path and that will get rid of the duplicate listings.
This is a beta version of PowerAmp so maybe they're still working out the bugs though? I never had that issue before and I even had the paid app.

Actually that doesn't do it. That just sorts it so that the list is duplicated but one entire list at a time based on location. But since I didn't memorize where you told me to go I found the setting that tells it exactly where to look/scan for music files.
Settings > More > Settings > Music Folders
Then select the folder where you keep all your music and deselect any others voila, no dupes.

[Q] Application storage?

Really wanting to pick up one of these Notes but, as I learned with my HTC Desire, I ran out of space for my applications rather quickly (until I rooted it), so I'm wondering if the Note suffers from the same issue of not enough space on the stock RoM? I really don't feel like rooting it but if that's the solution then so be it but I'm a bit of an app whore and I need space for them all.
Thanks all.
Any input appreciated.... Probably still getting one but I just wondered if app space has been an issue for anyone?
You have 11gb after all the system files are on there. That should be plenty, and if it isn't you can always save apps to sd.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
On my old desire only 512 MB or so was dedicated to app storage so it got consumed quickly, just wasn't sure if the Note had a similar spec for its internal memory.
I made the mistake of going back to BlackBerry and I've been out of the android loop for a bit but I'm coming back!

That is the internal sdcard for user storage...not apps
The data partition (where user apps are installed) is a bit over 2gb.
Way less than 11 but still should be plenty

Dude, I just bought the note about a 10 days ago, I'm not sure but it seems like i have a problem with the storage. My problem is that, I downloaded many games and all the data of those games that i downloaded stored automatically to the internal memory of the phone not to my SD card. Now my 32 GB SD is empty and my phone memory is full. I don't know what to do, if I ever move any of the data to my SD card then i can't play that game it will asked to download the data again. My phone is not rooted. I was wondering if rooted, does it going to help.

Apps can only be saved to the ~16 GB on the phone/internal sd card. The external is pretty much for music/videos/pictures. You can root, install titanium backup and backup apps to external SD. Then if you run out of space, uninstall less used items and you can restore from where you left it vs re downloading and starting over. Not perfect, but it's this way on a few phones (Droid bionic comes to mind)

[Q] Join external SD with internal storage/SD?

Hi!
I have a Samsung device of 8GB with an SD card of additional 32GB.
I'm using many apps that cache data for offline use (mainly Google Play Music), these apps are not smart enough to determine the 32GB of available space and take advantage of it, but instead claim 'no space'.
I thought perhaps there is a workaround for it by merging the external storage with the internal so the apps 'think' there is 48GB.
I don't use several SD cards which means I'm not gonna switch SDs back and forth any time soon.
Do you know a hack for it? Or any solution to make Google Music store its stuff into all available space wherever it is?
I've read this link, which I believe targets my issue, but since I'm not so much into Android development, I didn't understand it, can anyone refer me or translate it into a more detailed guide.
P.S. My device is rooted.
Have you tried this?

Works on many devices but requires root. As you've already got that give it a try

I have not seen anyone successfully join the two cards on the galaxy player. However on the player series you can change your internal and external cards around. This means your 32GB card will become your internal sd card and the 8GB card will become the external card. However, this means you cannot remove your 32GB card as you are effectively removing the internal memory which leads to a range of issues. Also depending on the class of your 32GB card you may see a performance increase/decrease when reading from or writing to the system.
there is a free app on the market called "gl to sd" it was build for playing gameloft games from external sd but it can be configured for any other app..al data will store on external sd..I use it for a long time for every bigger game like max payne..with out it i would fill that 5 gb long time ago.It basicly mounts data folder of that app on external insted of internal sd.

SD Card Problem / "Blank SD"?

I know there is probably nothing that can be done, but it's worth a shot to ask...
The other night when I was texting on my phone at work, I got a random notification that said something to the effect of "SD Card has unmounted unexpectedly". I just cleared and figured it was no big deal. Later on, I noticed that I couldn't access any music or pictures that were saved so I restarted my phone, and still nothing showed up. I went to recovery and it wouldn't mount my SD card(external 16GB, by the way). When I look at my SD card in root explorer, some of the stuff still shows up but they all say "0 bytes". And now, I just have this constant notification that says "SD card blank or has unsupported file system". I click on it and it gives me the option to "Format" or "Cancel". My question is, is there any way to recover what's on the SD card before I format? I don't understand what caused this at all. I've never had a problem with my SD card on any of my EVOs before, and now it suddenly gets 'corrupted' or something? I don't get it... But I really don't want to lose every picture and song on my SD Card, if possible.

Did you try putting it in your pc to see if your files were there? I don't know if anything can be recovered. You probably don't want to hear this, and not to be a jerk, but that's what Dropbox and other backups are for. Someone might have an idea for helping out though, that really sucks if you lost it all. I'm always afraid of that happening.

Yeah, I've been slowly adding old stuff to Dropbox. Along with my subscription which is only $9 a month, and the free space we got with our phone I have like 100 gb. Hopefully you can recover your stuff though.
Well a couple of things to try, boot into recovery and try to fix permissions. I had a problem where out of the blue pics music and apps didn't work that were on the card. I couldn't get anything to work so I fixed permissions and everything came back. Now as far as recovery goes, what OS are you working with on your computer. If it is mac, try DISKWARRIOR that program is AMAZING, so far I have had to use it on a mac and a windows pc at work. This program literally found every doc, pic and mp3, flipchart and smartboard pages on each HD and the HD was corrupt enough that NOTHING was able to see it when I put the HD's in an external case.

I run Kubuntu(Linux) on my personal computer that I built almost three years ago now(still a beast!)... I have Windows 7 on one of my secondary HDs for those rare times that I require the use of Windows. My mom has a Mac, though, so I hopped on there to see about DiskWarrior and it costs $100! Maybe if I can find a free trial version somewhere or something... I'm going to give a few things a try, though. Obviously the information is still on there but there's something causing it to not read correctly on anything. The Mac won't read it normally either...

attached is a screen shot that shows I have 2gigs of pictures, videos in my USB storage but I dont have any pictures or videos in my USB storage.
I found a few videos that games use for their intro but they are nowhere near 2gigs.
can somebody tell me how to resolve this issue.

The pics are not actually on your phone. Do the math. Total memory - Applications = about Available. Think about it. If you only have 10.84GB total how can you have 15.58GB Misc files? It is how the phone is set up to work. If you need space then lose some apps. You can't possibly need that many applications.

It is how the phone is set up to work. If you need space then lose some apps. You can't possibly need that many applications.

I have 16GB on board and a 32GB micro SD card. Ive moved all of my apps over 25mb to the SD card. there's no way the few apps I have is taking up that much space. Im figuring that apps that Ive uninstalled (namely Gameloft apps) have left a lot of junk behind.
I once rooted an S2 and found 10gb of data left behind from Gameloft apps that I uninstalled.
I dont want to root my note though because I wasn't too happy with the rooted S2 that I had.
You don't understand. You have 16GB of internal memory. That includes your ROM, 1.97GB of internal storage, and 10.84GB of USB storage. Apps are installed to the internal storage. If you move apps to the sd card you are in fact not moving them to an external sd card but the internal sd card/usb storage.
Yes it is possible you have gameloft or EA remnants left behind.

Dude are you serious? wow, I didn't know that. is it even possible to actually move those apps to my physical SD card--is there an app for that? lol. I use App 2 SD Pro.
Do a search on XDA for "Directory Bind". It will help you move folders of game data like gameloft games to the external sd card.
