yes, we do lack line out through usb (very hopeful that it'll be put on ICS) and the only way to connect is through headphone out which is already amplified.

think it's both. But yes normally I listen to a high level of volume and gs2 is the one of the lowest sounding device (ie through headphone out) i've ever owned. Not made for each other and made worst by owning couple of higher impedance headphones.
i have been using a FiiO E5 from when i had a n900, i think the volume is too low on the s2 aswell, i think you can get them for less than 20quid now, deffo worth it imo
thanks for that. I'm almost set my heart to buy one of these for later to be paired with sansa clip+ or similar. Probably will be cheaper and better than cowon's or sony x's. It's just curious what will be the effect on sound which is already amplified as HO in gs2.
Try Voodoo Louder from the Market for a 6dB increase, or the app in my sig for more than that. I use Brainwavz M3's with this app & find I only need to have volume at around 30% even in noisy environments (public transport, walking around town).
I've not found the S2 volume to be too bad, but I've used both one of the small "pop up" speakers, as well as a full blown amp, and a car headphone in socket - all absolutely fine.
you've tried Equalizer?, is in the market, is very good. regarding your original question, i use mine with logitech LB21, and it's sounds amazing.

with Poweramp I think the sound is louder than the music original application, you can find it on the market
yes i use the E6 - it works fine and the quality is good.
Do not use any of the EQ's etc as suggested here to get it louder. The samsung internal amp can only go so loud without distorting - all u are doing with software boosts is dynamically effecting the music you are listening to. Somewhat like the radio does. It makes all of the instruments in the track as loud as each other by compressing the loudest sounds and lifting the volume of the lower ones. If you really want to get a louder performance from your phone use different headphones - that run on less ohms or use an external portable amp like any of Eii's series.
that's a very good explanation. I've also tried with low impedance headphones but still lacks the "punch". My bad as in OP I used the wrong word "loud" instead of "punch".
so what's the effect of E6 on already amplified Headphone out? just to amplify few dbs on all spectrums??
Rockbox on [email protected] and [email protected] with Voodoo [email protected] did improve the overall sound. Also maybe in that time, my ears started to adjust with the sound coming off GS2. Found similar thread here where ppl's had good experience with amplifer. Ordered Fiio E11 and will post impressions arrive.

I read that Audio Boost 2 doesn't alter speaker volume much. I have not tried anything yet, but would any audio app with an EQ function allow boosting all freqs. work? I know that there is a chance of overdriving the speaker, but I want to try to get this "fixed". The speaker volume is the single most annoying issue with my NC. Mainly with sources with audio tracks that are recorded at low level.
Any help is appreciated.

Obviously, no-one did much. The worst part is NC's CM7 devs don't see it as a problem.
However, if you could talk dalingrin into looking into the issue (I myself failed to entice him to do anything), then there are some chances with his forthcoming new audio pipeline/ALSA commits.
As of now, when on CM7, you may try to play with DSP Manager's equalizer. Doesn't do much, agreed.

Only luck I'm having is headphones. Its really bad when the speaker is pushed up against the back of my case. Volume is horrible.
Use earphones will be the best bet for the time being.. Unless is CM7 got vol boost...

Played around with Poweramp. Adjusted EQ midrange boost, keeping bass low & boosted Preamp setting & have determined that the speaker may just suck! Unless Poweramp EQ is adding distortion when the levels are boosted, the speaker can't handle much volume before breaking up. There may be no hope that the NC will ever have decent volume.
I find the volume on many sources to be barely adequate for personal listening in a quiet room, but for showing another person a video in a not so quiet environment, it is barely audible. I have also noted that the audio quality from the headphone jack is really poor when compared to any decent MP3 player. Looks like B&N saved $$$ on the audio section in order to bring us the nice screen & other quality hardware. I think that I am OK with this, but it would be nice to have it ALL!

P. S. This may end my search for an internal solution to the volume level. Probably keep experimenting with small phone jack based amplified speakers.
The volume seems fine to me.
Hopefully we can have a stable Bluetooth stack working, so that we can pipe to audio to BT Speakers...

That's the conclusion that I am coming to. Seems B&N found it necessary to keep the output level low so the speaker doesn't break up. Be fun to remove it & connect another more efficient one that can handle more power. I think I will continue to experiment with the small headphone connected powered speakers.

I would be interested in seeing how much it would cost to solder in a "good" speaker.. I would think there would be a bit more space to squeeze in a decent speaker or possibly two?
First thing I thought of before I even bought my nook was what speaker was I going to buy for it! When I saw it in stores, I knew there was no way that speaker was going to do anything, and it made me wonder why it's even there. Considering that it's not loud enough for audio books really and mp3's would just play way too low, I think they should have just left it out and added 2 aux ports! Okay, that might not be realistic, but still!
I've opted for a portable iHome speaker from Wal-mart(it's the one that is a round cylinder and if you buy two you can have them hook to each other) for only $20 and should be getting it today. Unfortunately my PSP speakers blew out or that would be perfect for the nook since those things were loud enough to start a party.

Well, I dnlded Mymusicon & don't see any way to adjust the volume???
Edit: OK, tapped the album art screen & got another menu. Under "volume" there is a "sub" adj. that increases volume some.
I use DSP Manager to just raise all the EQ levels all the way up. It's pretty loud now.

With the CN facing you in landscape, hold it up with your left hand. Put your right hand palm flat on the back of the device, gradually moving your palm to the right. You find a 'sweet spot' where the speaker is amplified about 50% by reflecting towards you off your palm.
Play around a little & you learn if your hand should be half way out from under the CN at the right side for loudest clearest sound (what sounds best to me) or palm cupped or flat.
An easy DIY aplifier would be a piece of flat plastic (like cut from milk bottle) adhered with a tiny bit of velcro at the 'sweet spot'. Could be detatched for travel, not need bulky external speakers, yet deliver noticably louder sound.

I haven't seen this posted about the Note. Does anyone else have a bad hiss when listening to music? Using Google Music and spotify, there is a definite hiss in the background.
I realize the Note's audio chip isn't great but I wasn't expecting this. Coming from the Captivate, this is really annoying me at the moment.

Right, only on headphones. Quite loud and intrusive. I listen to my good quality in-ears at work for hours every day. I can't believe just how crappy the sound is on this otherwise fantastic device.
Ok, you got me wondering so I put on a decent pair of over-the-ear cans and spent 10 minutes flipping through a half-dozen channels of XM (128 kbps streaming). Then 5 more minutes going through several high-quality MP3s (variable bitrate with a max of 224 kbps).
No hiss, no background noise at all during the soft parts. Cranked the volume up to max, no distortion. Very happy with the results - much better than my last phone, the onboard sound on that sucked.
I'm on the stock rom, are you using something else?
For mere there's some noise when I'm not listening to anything, but I only hear it on my headphones.

have not noticed it with headphones...but.....While using the car dock, any pause in the music whether it be on Pandora, Google Music, or just no app selected, There is a really annoying hiss/feedback through the speakers in the car. This is using the audio output connected to my stereo's AUX input.
It's just like a bad ground "whine" on a stereo...speeds up and down with the car. Never did this before with any other phone/device, so I know it's the note or the dock. I have not tried connected directly to the headphone jack on the note, I'll have to try that out.

As stock as can be here. The hiss is most apparent at the beginning of the track when it starts playing but no music yet. As soon as the track starts playing, you can here it click on with the hiss.
Did I get a defective one?
I'm using a very good pair of in-ears (UE700s). I'll try to dig up some cans later to try it. Maybe directing sound directly onto the ear drums via in-ears picks up the hiss better (less natural filtering?).
Another thought: is there an internal amp volume/gain? Listening to the in-ears, it seems the media volume is very loud even at low settings and amps up quickly with each keypress. Maybe there is another sound tweak I can make somewhere.

A common problem if you are also charging - you are setting up a ground loop. You can add a ground loop isolator on the audio cable (big and clunky), unplug the power, or unplug the audio (and use BT in its place).

While I'm not a die-hard audiophile (I won't spend 10K on a sound system) I do consider myself to be pretty selective. Partly why I ripped my CD collection @ 224 and not something lower - I did lots of tests beforehand and still could hear subtle differences @ 192. Also why I rarely buy 128 kbps mp3s. Anyway, for better or for worse I just don't hear anything negative so maybe yours is defective. I will bust out some in-ear buds tonight and take another listen.

Often media players will have a separate volume from the phone's "media volume". Then there are separate "media volume" settings for BT and the jack. Then don't forget internal volume on BT headphones. It can take some fiddling to find the best combination.

I had the same thing with all my devices. Its just bad ground. That cable will get you set straight.
I never listened to my note with headphones, just with my car stereo with that cable. I hear absolutely no hissing or whining noise, just absolute beautiful sound and bass. This phone is mounds better than the Captivate.
Well, I retried some EQ/volume apps that I might has used recently to make sure there isn't any overboost feature enabled but nothing I can do to solve my problem. argh...
I never tried headphones in my Note with the stock sound equalizer. I had already installed the Beats by Dre mod in the developer's forum.
Zero hum whatsoever, and my happy hardcore sounds amazing.
I too have hiss from the headphone jack. I just returned my first Note yesterday hoping that the hiss would go away. It did not. I use mine in the car with an adapter that hooks directly to the back of my radio (JVC proprietary style).

Huh... I was about to return mine today but maybe it might be fruitless? Or maybe there is a large quantity with hiss and others without?
For those with no hiss, do you find the volume to be very loud? What I'm talking about is even at low settings, just 2-3 notches above silent, the volume is already pretty loud. My phone feels like the internal "gain" was set too high.
I know on my captivate, I could set the media volume to about 40% and still be comfortable. On my Note, it's about 20-30% if that.
Does volume of the note sounds real low to you compared to smaller phones???

No, it is TOO LOUD. just a couple notches above zero and some music is already getting too loud. This is with headphones not internal speaker.
I just got back from swapping my phone from the AT&T store. Both models (black/white) on display had the hiss. I decided to go ahead and swap and maybe a new shipment had an updated phone. NOPE, the hiss is still there.
I've used 3 different in-ears (couldn't find any over the ear cans) and also tested on a captivate and galaxy tab 10.1. It's the Note that is doing the hissing and very noticeable even at low volumes. Easiest to hear is right when you track begins but before the music starts.
I think this might be a deal breaker for me. I love this thing though. Especially irritating with spotify between tracks.

In order to quantify if this is hardware or not, try doing a factory reset (since you've returned your phone it shouldnt be that big of a deal).
Then, using the stock player on the phone (feel free to update Google Music or any other apps that came with the phone) see if you have the same hiss.
The factory reset is to determine if its possibly an app you installed at some point that is 'boosting' the sound internally without your knowledge. Sound boosting can create signal to noise problems.
Make sure your phone isnt plugged in / charging to anything (not plugged into a PC for example).
And try moving around to different locations, for example, in your house, try going into your front / back yard and see if the problem persists.
You also might try a different set of headphones and see if you have the same issue.
And lastly, if you plug in the headphones and reboot the phone, once the phone is fully booted, check to see if you hear any hiss WITHOUT any apps open?
As a side note, I just tested this (believe it or not, Ive had the Note for 3 weeks now and never plugged in headphones) using Seinnheiser studio HD 600 headphones (very expensive at around $600 for a pair and VERY power efficient) and have no hiss. Thanks for your helpful tips. Unfortunately, I've tried all that. Factory reset and all. As soon as the phone is ready to go, I listen to some music and hear the hiss immediately. Home or office, no difference. Not plugged in. Different in-ears. 4 different Notes.
I'm using very good in-ears (UE 700s, dual armature) and also decent SuperFi.3s.
Something interesting. Took a listen to a friend's good headphones just now and do not hear any hiss. Even if the media volume cranked up close the max, sounded fine, no hiss and listenably loud. With the in-ears, I can barely get half way up in volume because it becomes too loud.
Anyone here use in-ears? I know most prefer headphones or earbuds.
I'm going to try an inline attenuator tonight to see if that helps (if I can find it!).

My guess is likely that the in-ear headphones are putting the sound right up to your ear drum and they likely are super sensitive.
The sound chip in the Note is not near to as good as the sound chip in the Captivate.
Im going to do a bit more experimenting with this as the only headphone I have are the seinnheisers and they arent exactly great for portable listening. I have a friend coming over tonight who has some very high quality in-ear headphones and Ill see if I hear anything with those.

I hate that not enough people use RMAA or just test these things (unless they're high-end devices). My NuForce NE-700Ms have 16ohms impedance, and they sound fabulous. The source impedance for the L9 has not yet been tested, but they at least seem to be able to drive my IEMs with little/no fuss.
On that note, I'll probably switch to an Optimus G. Source impedance of 1.89ohms places it just above the iPhone 4S (first [tested] smartphone to do that, as far as I know), and overall audio output is impressively low on distortion.
So, I haven't got any problem with 16OHm earphones, yeah?

Too much of worries with so much of details, may leads to heart problems after few years. I would have just plug in and use it without asking anyone. At least I am sure the headphone does not explode in my years. lolz

If the music stutters in Poweramp when the mobile is in lock state, increase audio buffer one notch. Headset button controller app is also fine for volume setting, however, button long press is reserved by JB in contrary to ICS.
On my various Nokia phones, the volume limiter annihilated any volume differences between 16 and 32 ohm headsets to keep the phone and mainly you healthy. ****ing EU law.

I'l say this, the G2 uses aptX, so I went to go find an aptX compatible headset. I purchased the LG HBS730 bt stereo headset... It'll be hard to top that in my mind.
The audio quality is really good. But then I rooted and installed viper4android and now, my audio is easily much better than on my s4
Stock, untweaked, the loudspeakers are adequate for only typical indoor (office/home) use, IMO. I was on a speakerphone call outside and found the speaker had too little volume to compete against the urban background noise (trucks and such passing by at idle speeds). I opted to put in my headphones instead.
Ringers and notifications seemed to be adequate, again, for typical office and domestic settings. No way could I hear them driving down the highway with the windows down.
After installing Malladus, which includes volume tweaks, the notifications are significantly louder such that I've been able to set those sliders at mid position for my daily needs. The alarm has no problem waking me in the morning.
As far as line out and BT A2DP quality, I'd say it's very good but not quite up to the hype. Caveat, I have not yet tried any 24/192 source material. I mostly listen to 320k or better MP3 and FLAC music thru Neutron. For BT, it streams thru a Clarion FZ501 head unit. The headphone out drives a pair of Shure SE535s with Head-Fi-derived EQ tweaks. My research has concluded that Viper and Neutron are mutually exclusive and most head-fi'ers seem to prefer Neutron. I haven't tried Viper. I may one day, but haven't yet heard heard an informed, compelling argument to switch.
Line-out audio performance was in my Top-3 for priorities. I'm not disappointed or blown away. It's more than adequate for a quality mobile audio source, IMO.

My research has concluded that Viper and Neutron are mutually exclusive and most head-fi'ers seem to prefer Neutron. I haven't tried Viper. I may one day, but haven't yet heard heard an informed, compelling argument to switch.
Line-out audio performance was in my Top-3 for priorities. I'm not disappointed or blown away. It's more than adequate for a quality mobile audio source, IMO.

Sounds good.
I've been using viper since ages now, and it got really the thing that other eq/audio mods don't have, but I couldn't tell you what it is.
You should give it a go sometimes.
Do you find the headphones loud enough?
Sounds really good also went ahead and installed Viper4Android to tweak up the sound my favorite EQ/Sound mod of them all.
On my Jaybirds BlueBuds X (bluetooth) they sound great!
With malladus ROM now my headphones are almost uncomfortable at max vol. I use vmoda crossfades can't beat cans ?

Hmm, sounds good if it comes too loud. Since I just use in ear headphones, it might be loud enough at the end !
I have used this volume boost mod to improve the audio output levels on the g2:

I prefer to keep things stock as possible (neutral sounding) as far as audio signal processing is concerned when listening to my audio.
I run sennheiser ie-80 in-ears currently (16 ohms) and they pair really well with the dac in this phone.
The stock music player is quite capable on this phone, and Neutron has seen minimal use in the time I've had it, although it is installed.
I owned the note 3 for a week before returning it for the lg g2.
I came from the Samsung note 2 before that which I also initially bought for the audio capabilities and ended up using the same volume boosting technique for the same reasons, the g2 audio does surpass the note 2 audio quality with the stock lg audio player, voume boost mod, and proper audio source files.

Yes. I seldom run more than about 70%, but most IEMs aren't hard to drive.

i agree the stock sounds good. It just doesn't offer the EQ quality I want.
Can u guys confirm which DAC carries?
Read it´s the latest Wolfson WM5110 while also read it carries the Qualcomm WCD9320.
Also would like to know your impressions on sound quality when listening music with earphones.
every galaxy s model is always an excellent phone, but every year i have the same complaint with the headphone loudness. The headphones that come with it are great and i know they could handle more power. Anyone tried any non root way to increase the sound?
you need it louder? I have mine down one to two clicks from the bottom and it's almost too loud for me sometimes. I am around loud cars and trucks all day (I own both) but I guess my hearing is better than I thought lol.
unless you want a stronger sound and more power to the headphones for a cleaner richer sound, you'll need an external dac for that. I've never seen a phone capable of coming close to an external DAC (just look at their size, they wouldn't fit in a phone and be realistic.)

it sounds good with my jl w7's , probably why i cant hear it so well haha, ive used apps before like viper Audio but im no longer a fan of rooting, just looking for an app that others are using
