[DIY] SmartAss Cover for your Asus TF101 - Eee Pad Transformer Accessories

Yup, it's here, and you can do it!
Hope you enjoy it!
Don't carve your cases/buy any special thin strong magnet until you're sure you have the functionality you want!
Jelly Bean!
Some users reporting it works great. In my XP, it works perfectly on RaymanFX's JB rom.
-On ICS:
Some roms:
Lock+Wake - Same functionality as in iDevices!
Tested on: Megatron Rom, (derived from CM9)
May work perfectly on your ICS rom.
On some ICS roms:
It will work the opposite way.
Meaning that the device will unlock (wake) when the magnet gets closer to the screen, instead of further away (like Apple's, or other ICS roms)
-Non-ICS roms:
This only WAKES the device, doesn't unlock it.
If you want unlock you can set locking method to None in the preferences.
It does NOT Lock the device on honeycomb roms.

Haha! Brilliant.

Awesome. Now to find a very thin magnet.

Don't get it. So just placing a magnet on those coordinates on the tablet will make it do this?

It works.....

doh! but the main question I have it - WHATS THE COVER? how is it named and where did you got it? I cannot find any transformer-related case with such thin borders and not covering its face at all.

The case has been reviewed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401135
In my experience, the best ebay search you can do in order to find it is : "360 TF101 case".
Many sellers ship it worldwide so you should be able to get it no problem!

Thanks a lot! Found and ordered it

So THAT'S how the Tablet knows when you hinge it up from the keyboard when docked!
Cunning Cunning....

The case emulates the opening of the lid on the keyboard dock which wakes the tab. The keyboard has a magnet on the dock that corresponds to the coordinates on the tablet. He says this in the video with the little stringy things floating around.

This mod would work great in conjunction with Power Switch, which sleeps the tablet when you close the cover.

This mod + power switch App + Unlonk with Wifi App (free on GetJar at the moment) = same functionality as the original Smart Cover
Edit: better , as it only unlocks when you want it to, and you can customize the whole thing.

Hi, until today the mod great , I haven´t got dock, but I today I upgrade to ICS 4 and this mod don´t work.
The person with dock, ok, but If you haven´t got dock, it don´t work ¡¡
what happens ??

SmartAss Cover does't work in Ice cream if not connected the dock.
Has anyone found a solution?

Maybe his will work in ics http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507131

noooo don't tell me i just carved out a part of my case for nothing!

Works on ICS also
It works on ICS also as a proof i just posted a video on youtube.
search for "Asus Transformer TF101 Magnetic unlock"

Say it ain't so, just bought the magnetic earth magnets from DX which will probably take 6 months for delivery but removing this option will be a turd,
my power button is flaking out, takes atleast two jabs for off/on this magnetic trick would have been a great bypass.

cheap BT keyboard

Anyone ever try one of these cheap BT keyboards from ebay?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-Wireless-B...cessories&hash=item20b9fefac8#ht_10638wt_1139
There's tons of them.
It appears to be smaller than the phone in the picture. I cannot see what advantage it would provide.

That thing in the background is actually the front of a laptop, I think. But here's another one, with a hand in the pic for size reference:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Wireless-Mini-B...Trackballs&hash=item2c5d194867#ht_6608wt_1139
But as to what advantage it would provide:
1st of all, I type MUCH faster on a tactile keyboard (as most people do in reality).
2nd- tablet can be propped up on a stand and still enter test comfortably (I've found it difficult to type on a vertical screen, and placing it horizontally on my lap for a long message can negatively effect the viewing angle)
3rd- can be used remotely or when hands are dirty (think- kitchen / cooking / recipe tablet).
4th- console gaming. Nothing beats buttons for emulators.
I like that it is so portable, otherwise a full sized case + KB sort of approaches the size of a netbook which almost defeats the purpose of having this.
What I really wanted to know if these are just poor build quality or really uncomfortable to type on (I LOVED my touch pro 2 keypad, which this reminds me of, but not all kbs are created equal).
Additionally, there are other shapes and sizes, all around the same price on ebay. Seem to come from similar sellers, probably manufactured in one plant. Here's something more full sized:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Wireless-Blueto...ccessories&hash=item2311642184#ht_3553wt_1139
I can't really offer any insight to answer your question, as I have no experience with these one way or another... but I am quite interested in the answer. If you end up going this route and trying it, please post back here with the results... I'd be interested in a product like this, but build quality would also be a primary concern for me.
I ordered this keyboard from Amazon about a month ago, works great with both my GTab running Vegan 5.1.1 and my rooted EVO.
I apparently can't post links because I'm new, but search amazon for this:
Handheld Mini Bluetooth HID Wireless Chicklet Keyboard with Mouse Control Combo for Media Center PC, Windows 7/Vista/XP, Apple iPad & Sony PS3
It's like $35 and well worth it, I wrote a whole 5 page paper with it, pretty slick

Here you are.
How comfy is it being used as a desktop keyboard not as a thumb keyboard ?
Thanks
update: looks too small for touch typing (as noted in amazon reviews). So I like the caps lock led (not available on any other slim BT keyboard I have checked)
Also note that Android does not support the Bluetooth HID profile (looks like the underlying stack supports it since 2.1 or 2.2 but there's nothing in the ROM).
There's a free apk that might work "bluetooth easyconnect".
I've been edging around a semi expensive ~20USD apk that definitely works with my iGo BT keyboard, but they lock to phone ID and, on the gtab, that changes when you change ROMs...

I bought the bt keyboard that aasoror linked to. I got it to pair but it never connected, I even downloaded bluetooth keyboard easy connect but it would not let me pick the keyboard in the drop down menu. What is supposed to be the pin to help me get this working with my g-tab?
I am using Vegan GE 7.0. Thanks for any help you or anyone else can provide.
Oh, it never occurred to me that we would be missing the HID profile in bluetooth!
I just assumed if the iPad does it, certainly Android has it built in (thinking back to A2DP and other stuff Android supported first).
That really stinks- are BT keyboards not an option??

I like it because its wireless and doesn't need a usb dongle or anything, but its hard to type on it for than a few minutes. Obviously it is a lot better than typing on the GTab but I wish it were smaller or bigger (small enough to thumb type, or big enough that it wasn't cramped and getting tiresome typing with both hands and all my fingers.)
I already had a Rii Mini Wireless keyboard from before so I thought, hell it couldn't hurt to give it a try on my GTab. And it works! Even the touchpad! I would rather use that because it is smaller (thus more portable) and it has backlighting on it. I could type in the dark! Of course there is a Bluetooth version for the Rii Mini as well (around $40), but I think I have spent enough money on keyboards for my GTab lol.

I am now thinking about a little bigger keyboard, seems suitable for touch typing.
I bought a BT keyboard off ebay for 19$ and it will not connect at all with my GTab. It will not connect w my samsung fascinate android either but will connect w my Ps3 and my ipod. Go figure.

Case sensor app to automatically sleep when case closed?

Does anyone know of a good app that works with the Prime to auto-sleep when the carrying-case is closed? I've heard of some that use the light/proximity sensors to do this on other tablets but haven't found any recommendations so far.

CaseSensor for Tablets, but it is not free.
CaseSensor is a really nice app actually.. I have Galaxy tab 2 10.1 with official samsung book cover and CaseSensor works wonderfully. When I close the cover 3 seconds later the screen turns off, when I open the cover.. the screen comes on right away and there's a setting to disable the lockscreen when the screen comes back on so it's pretty much perfect now.

"THE dock club"

Well guys I just joined the club!! =)
Just convinced my wife to let me use the credit card rewards to buy one on amazon! (Ill get yelled at later, it wasn't a real yes but yes enough for me! Married men will understand lmfao!)
Either way, time to get positive about the prime!
What do you like best about your dock? What don't you like?
Is the extra battery awesome? Does it add a lot of weight? What reasons did you buy it for? What reasons do you love it now that you have it?
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
I like it, I plan on using it for school productivity. Notes and also splashtop my PC and do powerpoints etc.
Congrats and I know how it is getting permission from the wife to get new toys.
I love the extra battery life. And when I go to cafes I can set it on the table and type rather than hold it or set the tablet on its back. Love the looks from people too when I undock it.
Don't know how I lived without it.

The only thing I've done is disable the touchpad on the dock since I kept hitting it in error.

Heh heh I've pulled that trick. Then I hold up both pieces and say oh no oh what have I done!!!
I never thought I'd use the dock but decided to give it a try and i turns out i love it. There are a few apps I use that only can be used in portrait mode and the dock makes those a little cumbersome to use but otherwise it's great. Extra battery life along with the SD card slot and usb is frosting on the cake, Beat that iPad. I;ve never looked back at dumping my iPad. Hate iOS love Android. Get the dock you'll not be sorry.
Proud Owner of a Transformer Prime on Tapatalk
Great addition that compliments the Prime in all ways
First of all I think it's safe to say that the dock completely surpassed my expectations.
Build quality is top notch and has he exact same finish as the tablet itself.
The hinge is super high quality. Really gives you confidence when docking the tablet, it also makes a very obvious click sound when docking.
The extra battery life is a great feature.
SD card and usb slot very useful.
Typing is very comfortable, a lot more comfy than I thought it would be.
When docked and closed the Primes screen is kept safe (big plus).
It also is useful for keeping the prime at very comfy using angles, even if you don't actually need to use the keyboard.
I find myself using the dock a lot more than I thought I would.
The only thing I don't like is that the key mapping works best
on the built in Asus keyboard.
When you use any other keyboard the key mapping isn't great.
So I find myself having to switch to the Asus keyboard every time I dock the Prime, which is kind of annoying.
All in all the dock is one of the Prime's best features. Really love it. Gives you a great and somewhat unexpected (for the good) experience.
I love it, it's faster to type, the battery never ends and certainly looks much better!
Awesome! These are the responses I was hoping for! I'm super excited to get mine! I'm really excited for pretty much all the features. Can't wait to set my emulators back up now that I can have it at a nice angle without holding it. I need to start looking into some high density SD cards too. This 32gb micro is nice but now I can get full size.

I love mine & typing is a breeze on it.It actually has changed my view of tablets now.As I will only buy a tablet that docks with a keyboard from now on.Coming from a Motorola XOOM this baby is badass.People freak out when I show it to them then detach the tablet from the dock lol.
I love my dock. Completely awesome. USB port, battery, holding the Prime together.. Just be careful about stressing your Prime when opening / closing. I have the start of a crack on it, otherwise fully fonctional Prime, and I beleive it might be related to the opening and closing stress on the glass. See other thread, " I cracked my Prime " or something. There is a bunch of us usimg the dock that got that problem, while being as gentle with our Primes as with newborn kittens. Otherwise, it beat any currently available combination of bluetooth keyboard + tablet. It fully replace my laptop.

Any picture of where the crack is starting to appear??
When I present it to friends in the docked form... they like it, but not really excited. In the moment I undock it they freak out. Lots of working collegues and friends travel alot and are it freaks... the idea of a tablet AND an ultrabook in one freaks them out. One guy ordered it just after it. No negative feedback till now, all find it an amazing idea.
Yeah I was hesitant at first, but I came around. I'm getting very excited for it. If I can figure out how to cool my tegra 3 properly the extra battery life will be great when I get to 2ghz lol.
Edit: anyone have a list of do's and dont's for the dock? Like certain ways to open or close. Also at night should I plug in the dock and put the tablet in to charge?

Hmm, no. It could be done, but you'd be physically modifying each key yourself and adding your own LED's and everything, I don't think another keypad would fit right. And then your battery consumption would go through the roof, you'd likely want to increase the size of the battery in the keyboard.
There's not going to be a simple way to do it, and I'm afraid none of these ASUS devices are going to get popular enough to warrant a ton of third-party support and products, not for ones like that anyway.
i actually thought of this a while ago and took my keyboard apart. It does not connect like your laptop keyboard for easy removal (that i remember) and there is VERY little space in there to work with. Overall i think it would be more work than its worth.
You would have to find a keyboard with transparent keys, or find a way to make your keys transparent if you want the letters to glow. This is hard because the keyboard is like, 80% or something of a regular keyboard.
If you just want a glow between the keys this might be a little easier, you would still have to find a way to route power to LED's and find room to place them under the leys which, honestly, do not travel very far meaning you need very small LED's
There ARE small enough LEDs (the size of like, a large grain of sand? not sure how to explain it) and you technically COULD solder those to the ribbon wires (like what connects the screen to the mobo in the prime), supplying power, then route the ribbon around where the keys are, connect to a switch which you route to the outside of the dock and connect to power and BAM you have a backlight keyboard!
But honestly, thats a lot of work and you would have to fabricate everything yourself.
Good luck and dont forget to let us know how it works (with pictures along the way)

Mmmmh by the way probably with "edge led" lighting and semi-trasparent keyboard I can at least turn my prime keyboard to a littler visible in the dark....
In a LOT easy way i can put on all key a reflective or luminescent paint, and probably light form the screen is enough to make keyboard visible....
I need to try all this...

Smart idea with the stickers!
But btw I suggested an idea to mod the keyboard and put bigger batteries or larger capacity, and maybe mod the backplate of the keyboard aswell in order to fit the possible larger batteries.
It shouldn't be a difficult operation I believe and imagine the battery life increase if its a success

X2 on this. The prime is beautiful and super thin, but I would have no problem if it was thicker with even more battery.
One of the biggest advantages (other than the ridiculous battery life) would be that it would make the dock and all much more bottom heavy.
Edit: Does anyone know if it would be possible to buy the Transformer Prime or Original Transformer dock batteries. IIRC the OG Transformer had a 3300mAh battery. I wonder if it could be wired into the original battery and then a spacer installed.

Im planning on opening mine at some point not right now because I am still testing ths unit and may have to return it.
But it doesnt 'feel' like its a difficult operation. Just find bigger batteries, change them, modifiy the plate beneath to fit the new space which should need to be too big but what the hey the bigger the better, more battery life (ALOT MORE) and finally some weight to the bottom to have it easier in your lap or wherever.
We have to keep discussing about it and finding out what sort batteries are used right now in the dock, dimensions and so on.
I believe its an awesome idea!

When you open it be VERY, and i do mean VERY carefull, the tabs on the side of the dock break very easially and, as a result, will cause it not to hold closed as well.
Also, under the latching mech there are a few screws, hidden by the stickers that act as padding. again, carefull as you remove this because you dont want to deform the sticky padding nor do you want to lose screws.
Also make sure to take lots of pictures!
Oh, and +1 for the glow in the dark keyboard stickers! pwnt!
This would be an awesome mod. If you go through with it and succeed, would love to see pictures, and a guide on how to do it, if possible. Not sure I'd be willing to try it on mine if it's too complex. If it's the glow in the dark paint though, as opposed to the leds, it might not be that bad.
Personally, if it were an issue for me (which it isn't!), I'd buy a USB keyboard light such as this:

Thanks for the advice, I will most likely start doing this next month as I may change to the T700 but the keyboard is just the same I believe right?
The only major differences between the Prime and the Infinity is the 1080p screen and that the CPU will be 1.6 Ghz
My Prime is defect and I the shop from which I purchased it are not taking in any more of them and so I came to an agreement that I will get the T700 instead and just pay the difference.
But im thinking about maybe buying a second keyboard just for experimental purposes.
I think if we all could put our heads together we could create a very cool mod
I would have 'dissected' my Dock right now if I wasn't going to return it.
We'll discuss more about this, I dont see why it should be hard, and yes I shall take a ton of pictures.
Cheers.

Hehe that's cool but I think it enough with some high quality stickers, maybe even just the material that you cut into the the shape of the keyboard strokes and place them, tha would be even easier but also the battery thing would be the truly cool thing to do if its a success of course.

I have something similar for my laptop and I hate it. It casts shadows across the keys and doesn't illuminate everything uniformly. Not to mention, it's an eye sore.
I'd love for some to come out with a very thin line of lights that would sit at the top of the keyboard beaming directed light towards the keys (in your direction), but so directed that it doesn't go straight into your eye. It would be low profile and sit just behind the keyboard, under the monitor.
I still think stickers are the better option, but I personally wouldn't invest until there was a cool font in the right color (blue!).

I think this is a great idea, I have been looking for ways to do this myself, have you made any progress at all before I start?
Solution?
Do you think we could use EL wire and just weave it through the keyboard keys?

wire is too thick / not enough space.
I have a 700, the prime is SLIGHTLY different (curved edges, 700 is more angular) tho they both fit in the same dock, you just gotta work it a little to get the 700 in properly.
Internally the dock is the same for the infinity and the prime.
Would love to see a mod with an extra battery. Here's a video on a tear down.

Case with Bluetooth Keyboard

To use my Xperia Tablet Z profesionally, I realized that I need a physical keyboard. For the onscreen keyboard I installed Swiftkey and I'm satisfied with it compared to other onscreen keyboards but it is no competition for a physical one.
I looked around on various sites e.g. Amazon but unfortunately there is no case with integrated bluetooth keyboard has been designed specifically for the XTZ. There are enough bulky, generic cases with keyboards out there but let's be honest... we hate bulky crap! If you bought an XTZ you want a clean and professional looking case. :cyclops:
The Kensington KeyFolio Expert Folio & Keyboard for Android/Windows tablets appealed to me because of it's interesting micro-suction technique to hold the tablet in place. I decided to give it a try and was able to order one for EUR 50,-.
I'm sharing a couple of pics for you guys to see what it looks like together with the XTZ. The keyboard fits my needs perfectly and pressing any key works to wake up tablet. The dimensions of the XTZ seem perfect for this case and so I must say I am satisfied. Especially because this case allows a position where you can charge from the micro usb port! That darn micro usb port has finally been owned

What do you think?
Doesn't look too bad considering the others I've seen online. I needed something similar but went for a separate logitech bluetooth keyboard and the poetic case. In my job I need the ability to type quickly while sat in an office but also to take the tablet out around steel plants and take notes where I couldn't use the case keyboard. How do you find using the XTZ as a normal tablet with the on screen keyboard in that case? I can just imagine that having to keep changing the input method in settings each time I wanted to use Swiftkey instead of the cases keyboard would be a bit of a nuisance.
does the keyboard consume quickly the battery?
Could you please link the case that you bought? Tried searching for it but found alot of different version both for the iPad and stuff. Would be nice if you could paste a direct link to the case so I dont make any mistake if I buy one.
Is this the right one? amazon.com/Kensington-KeyFolio-Multi-Angle-Bluetooth-K39532US/dp/B007RB10K4
Please excuse me jumping in on your thread?
Not exactly confused but needing a bit more solid feedback on available android keyboards for XPERIA TABLET?
I have just watched the video on the kensington and it seems fine to me.but I wondered what other choices are out there? I have spent a long time searching and all I can find is APPLE Keyboards and one or two generic keyboards for Android.
I know Logitech make one which is probably the front runner?
any additional feedback most welcome as I have just ordered my Xperia z tablet

As long as the "Apple" keyboards use bluetooth you should be good. Most keyboard will work with the XTZ, it just boils down to personal preference.

Many thanks for your reply, much appreciated.
I had never thought of actally usuing the APPLE Keyboards for ANDROID?Tablet, but it`s an interesting thought.can see that APPLE Specific keys would be lost on an Android keyboard though.

Yes the Apple specific keys wouldnt do anything just as the Windows key wouldn't.
There are a lot of iPad keyboard cases at BestBuy so you could go look at them and see if theyd fit.

Apple For Android???
Hello shangrila500
Really do appreciate your reply,I am not very tech minded..so it all takes a bit longer to sink in with us old folk
are there any good reasons why you would not use an APPLE keyboard with an ANDROID Device?
Something I and maybe others have not thought off, because if we can use an APPLE Keyboard then the choices really do increase, from 2-3 good keyboards,Kensington,Zagg e.t.c to a very wide choice.
Would love to hear from folk who have being using APPLE pads and how they find them

The only reason you would not want to use it is if it has some proprietary Apple connection that is what it communicates via. If it uses bluetooth you should be fine.
Ive recently found a sharp looking Nexus 10 keyboard that looks like it should work, the only thing I am worried about is that the case has the rounded edges for the Nexus tablets instead of the sharp square ones like our tablet has.
Here is a link to it:
http://www.amazon.com/GreatShield-S...67698&sr=8-26&keywords=nexus+10+keyboard+case
It may not work but im going to order one next month when I get paid and test it out. Im in the middle of writing reviews for the cases I currently have for the XTZ so I may wait to post them until I get that case/keyboard combo and just post them all together.

I believe you would be wasting your time because the case is dimensionally and geometrically incompatible with the XTZ. Even its cutouts are in the wrong locations. The case also looks bulky, heavy (15.2 ounces), and God-awful ugly.

I don't think it looks that bad for a keyboard case, it looks a lot better than most and out of all the keyboard cases I've seen it looks the best. It is going to weigh quite a bit because of what it is, if Sony made a KB case for the XTZ it would be nice and sleek but until then we have to ,odify cases that have been released for other tablets that are going to be bulkier.
The weight is on par with other keyboard cases and will be about the same as the Surface KB case that someone has already confirmed worked for our tablet
A for the geometrical imperfections I plan on making some modifications to the case to hopefully make it work, it may not in the long run but I plan on eventually getting a Nexus 10 so if I think there is no possible way it will ever work once i get it I will just hang on to it.
The cutouts are going to be wrong on every KB case until Sony or someone else releases one specifically for the XTZ.
All that being said I may just go with the Surface case for a KB case, I just don't particularly case for it but beggars can't be choosers.
P.S.
Would you mind if I sent you a PM to ask a few questions?
