Rooted my droid2 with one click method and havent had a problem with anything at all, outside around a week ago.
whenever i open opengarden or barnacle, and start the tether, my phone drops its signal completely, then gains a few bars, then phantom(or whatever you call the white 3g logo) but never goes blue and allows me data access. The only way i can get data back working on my phone is to end the tether and enter/exit airplane mode or reboot.
I do not understand this, is there anyway to fix this, or is there something I should be worried about?
I am being throttled by verizon at the moment as ive used 3.5gb of data so far this pay period(which ends on the 22nd) I usually just use easytether with a usb cord for data connection to my pc but i like the wifi tether much better if I can get it working again
any help?

Before learning the basics about rooting and flashing ROMs (I still consider myself a noob though) I was using EasyTether for my laptop data connection and it was working great.
Recently I rooted so I could use WiFi Tether which seemed to work well for about a week. For no apparent reason I've begun having issues.
My brief history, in order, includes:
OTA 2.1
rootme.zip (problems began shortly hereafter)
FlashBack21_v1.zip
Tenzo-Official2.1-cache.zip
kaosfroyo-v38.zip (this rocks but...)
So, the problem is that after a few minutes (and I mean maybe 1-2) of using tethered data from my phone (in all ROMs listed after root) said data stops. Disconnecting/reconnecting has no effect. The only resolution is to restart phone and reconnect. Works for a few brief moments then stops. This behavior was consistent with USB Tether, Wifi Tether and Easy Tether.
When observing this behavior on my laptop and then browsing back on my phone there also seems to be no data connection. All is well when I restart the phone. So long as I don't tether my phone browses normally.
So, what should my next steps be here? How do I troubleshoot? Is it possible that Verizon can detect that I'm tethered and is shutting down my data?
Thanks
Bernie
They may have detected it. Wait for the bill.
This crap has been happening off and on for me since I began tethering with my rooted Eris last May. Just in the past month, though, the symptoms seem to have become more frequent. Occasionally I'll have an uninterrupted session...but typically I'm frequently running to my phone, putting it in airplane mode momentarily, restarting tether, etc.
I've tried switching to hybrid PRLs, changing radios, updating towers, reactivating my phone, multiple ROMS...still pretty crappy. Also, in the past I noticed Windows 7 seemed to lock up tethering more frequently than XP...however, that has since become less true. My next step was to update my Windows 7 Wifi driver...did that this morning and have been going strong for 40 minute or so. I'm guessing it's just luck at this point.
BTW...Don't worry too much about your bill...I've seen no tethering charges and have been doing this for 6 months.
So, I flashed back to an un-rooted stock ROM and installed EasyTether again and have tested a few times now using only USB tethering. No dice. Symtoms are the same. It works for a while then just stops. Won't work again until I restart phone.
When I disconnect the phone from the Laptop, the phone's browser doesn't appear to be getting data either. All pages/bookmarks just hang with the progress bar maybe at 20%.
So, I suspect this is either the network is picking up that I'm tethering somehow, or, the phone is jacked. The bummer is that I can only replicate this when tethering.
Someone suggested that tethering may be against the Verizon terms of service. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks,
Bernie
Tethering is against the TOS sure. I don't know man.

+1 - I hate to say this and it's a cliche, but I'm glad it's not just me. Most of the time I have uninterrupted tethering for just browsing, but when I start downloading that's when it becomes more susceptible to the 3G going in and out.
I usually do an APN delete and restore but I still find that a reboot is necessary most of the time.
Sometimes I do have uninterrupted downloads but other times it gets interrupted all the time.
I am using Wifi tethering, too. I used to use USB tethering, but even though both get interrupted, Wifi tethering seems to work better. It's faster to connect.
Good news, check out my thread for a solution at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852618
Anyone else wake up to data issues today? Had no data connection even though sprint zone diagnostics said 3G connection was working correctly. Called sprint, they said there were no outages in my area and made up an E ticket. Told me to take it in to the sprint store. Decided to try ##3282# myself first. Got data back, but now I'm stuck in 1x. I'm running the latest cleanRom and haven't had any issues up to now. The only thing that I've done different the last couple of days is that I've been using wifi tether to connect my new View. I'm wondering if they see it somehow and if I'm being throttled. Any ideas?
##DATA# wont help.
Yeah the ##DATA# wont do anything for you. Please try any of the following:
1. Turn on airplane mode for about 1 min, and the turn off.
OR
2. Try power off the device and remove the battery for about 2 minutes so the device fully powers off and deregisters from the network. Power back on and try again.
If that does not work let me know. You might have to reset the network settings through ##CLEAR# menu.
I had this the other day but I reflashed my phone I dont know if yours is flashed and it fixed it
The past couple days my phone has lost data connection a couple times for seemingly no reason, and I am pretty much always at 1x now. Also my cell signal is lower than usual.
This is even when connected to my airave. I dont know why, but Sprint just seems to have this happen sometimes.
It definitely seems to be associated with wifi tether. I did try the airplane mode deal as well as turning off the mobile data. Also powering down and pulling the battery. It's hit and miss. Seems like receiving a text or checking my email will bring back 3G, have no idea why? But it's been working for me pretty consistently. Once I'm back up and running I'm golden til I tether again... Then sometimes I lose it sometimes I don't.
For some reason, when I tether my phone's Internet it works fine for a moment or a long time and then it switches to limited connectivity. No Internet connection on any of the connected devices, even if I reset the connection. Only restarting my phone seems to work.
Using stock Android 4.0.4 and the stock tether.
Has anybody else experienced this? Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Well, none of you bothered to reply to this, so I might as well. After I upgraded to 4.1.1 it seemed to work better, and it wouldn't turn off if I leave power saving off. However, the internet still randomly refuses to work on my laptop and only connects again if I restart the phone.

4G or 3G model? I have to turn LTE off because if it bounces around from LTE to 3G+ on my i9305T it tends to hang. I cant use wifi tether at all when CM10.1 when LTE is enabled, well I can use it but its very unstable. Try turning LTE off. If that's not the issue I'm sorry I can't help.

I don't really know because I don't have LTE at my location, the best reception I get is HSPDA+ which I heard is like 3.5G. I'm not really sure if my device is capable of 4G/LTE. It occasionally switches to E-GPRS when I'm not using the internet. But very rarely (like maybe once in 2 days), the internet just refuses to connect both in my phone and laptop eventhough the data indicator has the green and orange arrow on. When I restart it, it usually works fine. It's really confusing.
So after the 3.16 update, I noticed my phone was not picking up 4G. After pulling my hair out to figure out why, I traced the problem to the Sprint Connection Optimizer being disabled. Turn it on, 4G toggles on with it, turn it off, 4G toggles off with it. The previous version of the Sprint Connection Optimizer did not do this. To confirm my suspicions I reset the phone to stock and observed the same behavior.
This is quite the pain in the ass as I don't want my phone connecting to WiFi networks that I marked "remember". In addition, I don't need my phone connecting to WiFi at work (which I use for work purposes under special circumstance).
My short term solution is to forget WiFi networks but this is rather tedious. With the Sprint Connection Optimizer toggled off, I am essentially locked out of 4G. I pay for Sprint's service and I insistent on using as much of their/my bandwidth as I chose.
Can anybody else confirm what is happening. My area has relatively strong 4G coverage, to the point where seeing 3G would be a rare occurrence. I need to make sure this isn't a problem on just my device before I roam my way out of my contract.

Why would you not want to connect to WiFi networks that you mark remember?....jw
If you have the option of your local WiFi versus 4G most times I'd expect someone to want to go with the WiFi... Only time you'd want to not is in places where 4G was better connection, which in those cases I wouldn't want to mark said WiFi networks as remember...
Ill try to mess with it here see how it effects my stuff as were rolling 4G a lot now...

In most cases work wifi won't let you watch porn at work man. Total pain in the a$$. We should be able to toggle our own connections. I will say wifi is better on battery and generally faster. However there's potential risk on wifi that someone could access your device. Extremely unlikely but a possibility none the less.
In my area we don't have lte yet and the other day after installing MeanBean I saw 4G pop up in signal bar then went away then came back. Haven't seen it since. I was so excited but I shouldn't get my hopes up. Sprints been saying 4G for a long time and still nothing. Only reason I stay is unlimited data and I live the HTC evo line.
You have a better chance of winning the lottery 5 times than someone accessing/ hacking your phone over wifi without you knowing about it.
Also there are great wifi apps that tells you who is on the network your on at all times.

I have found that Comcast seems to throttle youtube traffic at certain times of the day, and I have a specific spot in my house where my wifi signal just completely drops (but still claims to be "connected.") I'm obviously going to want my phone to remember my home wifi connection, but I don't necessarily want to always be using it at home.
My situation may not be incredibly common, but it's a valid scenario where you may not necessarily want connection optimizer to run the show.

The optimizer isn't your issue there though, as the mere fact of having the network remembered in the phone will cause it to connect to it whenever within range.... Its the fact you have a remembered WiFi network saved and you want to override that in a specific location when still in range of the WiFi... In that case the only solution is to toggle it off when you don't want to use it at that specific location in your house...
Optimizers doesn't just force you to connect to your local network that's remembered as the WiFi being on will do that itself already...

You can try disabling Sprint Connection Optimizer and try purchasing Juice Defender Ultimate. If you use its location service, it will only turn on wifi in places that you turn on the wifi antenna and remember them. And if it turns it on, you just manually turn it off until its trained.
So at my new place i can only get satalite internet, no dsl, no cable. I setup a 4g repeater and get awesome signal in my house now. Set up a router with dd-wrt to connect to my phone's wifi hotspot. My problem is when i use it, 4g drops after a while, maybe 5-30 min. tethering usb to a computer works fine with pdanet+. Ive tried different roms, resetting to factory, rooting with 3rd party wifi tether apps, sqllite editor hack for the build in wifi. Ive seen some other people are having the same issue with jellybean on other phones on verizon. Foxfi worked great on ics, 4g never dropped. streamed netflix for an hour no problems.
Anyone found a fix yet?
