Ok so i hit 10GB today on my phone and now am being throttled down to 100K-200K.
Anyone else have this happen?
Well, AT&T is known to throttle the top 5% of data users (w/ the grandfathered unlimited data plan). You must be in the top 5%.
How do you know you are being throttled? Did you get a text?
250 KB/s is good speed in my neck of the woods, even with full bars of H+. My normal is 150-200.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
Also, how did you get to 10GB?!
10GB is a lot of data for a cell phone per month ... just my opinion.

Yup, thats what came to mind.
Well, that and Netflix...
Idk how much I used. But I got the top 5% warning for my area. Idk how much I used but they said this month its a warning. Next month I'm getting throttled

There is an icon baked into the notification icons labled throttled something. Does it put the icon in your notification bar when they throttle?
10 GB wouldn't be that hard. I use 6ish on a normal month with mostly Pandora, and a few ROMs or podcasts. I don't tether.
Personally I wish they would just announce a soft cap. If I knew I got full speed up to 5 GB, then got throttled it would be easier to manage than a moving target such as "top 5%".
You can check your data usage several ways. *data# (type into dialer, press call, get a text) would be the easiest. There is a myAT&T App, or the full website.

type *data# on your dial pad. It will tell you your usage mtd.

Nope to the porn but I do useIheart radio, Sling play, Netflix, Orb live, surf the net and some other stuff. I got the warning a couple days ago saying I was apraoching the limit then this morning I got the you are now being thrttled and sure enough my speeds were cut from 3Mb-6Mb to the 100k-200K speeds.
They are punishing me for using a data plan thy pushed on me to the fullest that I can.
When I bought my tilt1 I had to get unlimited.
I doubt 10gigs is the top 5%. I'd say that's just when att wants you to think ur in the top 5 just so they can throttle you.

Lol idk how people with full time jobs find the time outside of their homes (where wifi is avail) to do all of those things.. pandora/radio is understandable...
Its funny because I remember how difficult it was to convince customers to get a smartphone because at the time, unlimited data was the only thing available. Now, its as if everybody and their grandmothers want unlimited data and fight dear life to keep it.
Anyways, I just think the smartphone industry just blew up too quick to sustain the growing amount of smartphone users on its network.

I don't disagree with this at all however no one i know gets bad speeds in San Diego, so where is this your using too much network resources and slowing down the network happening?
10gb isn't crazy. I use around 7 a month just streaming google music to my car to and from work. A little slingplayer and netflix.

10 GB is a lot of data, but I have always been bothered that my "unlimited data" plan wasn't quite unlimited. But at least I don't think I'll have to worry too much about reaching that limit.
I would try to use WiFi when ever I could. A little less Netflix wouldn't be a bad thing.
10 GB is obscene. I can't say I disagree with you being throttled.
Sent from my SGS II
not sure how easy it is to hit 10gb for a month, but i can average about 3gb, and thats being mindeful of wifi use. i bet if i took out wifi i could be close to 8-9gb. 10 doesn't seem too hard to hit. i know there were people on howardforums bragging about how much data they used in a month and 10gb would be a drop in the bucket for them
I have used 32gb like 3 months ago and nothing happened I am on an iPhone

The throttling was effective only like a month or so ago.
its hard that all the wireless companies are moving towards tiered data while technology is moving to cloud services which contradicts one another...
Just remember though that theyre only throttling high data users because high data = more bandwidth used = less avail bandwidth/speeds for everyone else in your area.

internet.voicestream2.com...oh how you ROCKED as a backdoor workaround!
yeah, tmo wisened up less than 1 month after applying the soft cap.
I intentionally wrung 14.8g that month...using voicestream.com instead of epc.tmo.
...before the haters pop up, I bought the HD2 to replace my home internet connection with an UNLIMITED gb usage contract on purpose. A few months later tmo changed their minds, leaving me with 18 months left on my contract and a brand new limited use policy.
douchbag tmo wouldn't grandfather my plan (or at least honor the contract I agreed to), so hell yeah, I got mine. after 8 years they could be more loyal?
/rant
i'm here browsing my next phone for when my lame duck hd2 contract ends in Feb.
carry on.
Just slightly ot. I was capped last month on an unlimited data plan and there is no way I used 5gigs. Everything data intensive I do on WIFI. So I checked Tmo's my acct. app and dl'd some podcasts over WIFI just to double check and sure enough the data usage rose by that exact amount which means they are counting wifi thoroughput as part of allotted data usage. Now I checked some comments on the market and it seems a few people seem to think it is the my account app that is gauging ALL data and sending it to tmo as part of their network being utilised. Id like to hear what you guys think.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

There is no way this is the case. Not completely anyway. I've used 68 GB through wifi according to Netcounter and 4.5 gigs of data. My Billing cycle end on the 2ND. Now according to T mobile I've used 5.5 gigs. Although I disagree with T Mobile I can debunk your theory that they use ALL wifi traffic. But some is possible.
Obviously I'm a heavy user.

No what Im saying is it is a possibility that the data usage meter on the Tmobile My account app is registering all data as through their network. I can only surmise since without the app I couldnt tell but the meter in the app rose by the exact amount I dl'd through WIFI.

I would have some serious issues if t-mobile said that I used over 70GB of data and had my data cut off less than a week into my billing cycle.
I think TMobile would say something about that too now that I think about it.
So all wifi data as 3G/4G data. No. Very seriously doubt it.

i have to agree that my account app must be wrong. I was on sprint for months and never went over 4 gb. I tethered my phone all the time and used pandora a lot. within 5 days the my account app showed i used 2gb of data. I barely even used the phone and hadn't even tethered it yet. I returned the phone and told them why . they said it was a setting i had that used that much data. of course they had no clue what they were talking about but i said yea ok just give me the refund. Tomorrow I am going to purchase the phone again and run some more tests to see what is really going on.

There ARE issues with the My Account app.
Case in point:
A couple of months ago I became eligible for a corp discount on T-mo. Obviously, I had to extend my contract to get it. It also changed my billing date (I had had a billing cycle that ended on the 19th and started on the 20th, it changed to end on the 16th, start on the 17th).
The next month all my lines (I had four voice lines at the time) rolled over to a new billing cycle on the 17th as expected EXCEPT for the data limit on my Sensation. My Sensation showed me using 4.7GB on the 16th. On the 17th IT STILL HADN'T RESET. Long story short, if I hadn't stayed on top of it and called and escalated it up the ladder, I would've been throttled all month long for the whole next billing cycle. It was so bad I had to move to the ten gig tier JUST so I wouldn't be throttled. I also spent the whole month with 5 GB already used according, to the app. They have a front end AND a back end system that don't always report the same numbers.

I work for Tmobile in tier 3 tech support. The cap is a system cap its not hardware or software on your phone. The my device app sucks at keeping count as does my Tmobile there tends to be a lag from time to time. There is no way around it. Trust me I've looked. And no as difficult as it may be for some of you to believe wifi does not count towards your usage. Hope this helps clear up some of the confusion.

since you work for t-mobile please explain how this is possible. I have been wanting to switch to tmobile for some time now. I have been with sprint fopr a while and the only thing keeping me from witching is the data cap. for the past 5 months i have watched my data usage on my sprint bill and i have been using between 1.5 -3.5 GB a month. i tether from time to time and use Pandora about 2 hrs a day. I have 3 gmail accounts and 2 exchange account syncing all the time. FB and a news feed also syncing. with all this going on and no video streaming besides a little youtube from time to time my data has stayed relatively low. i switched to tmobile 2 weeks ago and bought the Amaze. after 5 days of usage my account showed 1.8GB. not tethering at all and very light usage because i was still using my sprint phone as well. this month my spring bill showed 1.9 GB and that's a whole month of usage. how could i have possibly used that much data on Tmobile in only 5 days. I asked a guy aqt the stoore and he said it was probably one of my settings. i laughed and said yea i have youporn streaming in the background all day. anyway i have a feeling that t mobiles data usage is way off or maybe it was high because i had downloaded all my apps since i was setting up the phone. I am reluctant to try again until i see if others are going over the 5gb every month.

Not quite, I come here personally for the htc information and fixes it helps me personally with rooting and what not. As far as taking info back to the job na, closest I've done is bust someone who's jacked up their phone while rooting it and knowing they did by checking build numbers radios etc trying to pass it off as a warranty issue.

Well the problem is that I'd need to look through stuff on your phone as I'm typing this on my amaze and don't feel like writing a book telling you to sync unsync various things and download app monitoring apps to find the leak. At the job the only thing we have to go on is the system. So it can either be one of 2 things: the system is only having an issue with your phone or you used more than you thought you did. That's not to say option number 1 isn't possible but of the thousands of calls I've taken in 5 years I've only seen one or two cases that the usage (i can see the ip addresses and how many megabytes you used while you were there on one of my systems) didn't match the history. So best thing to do is either monitor yourself through a proven app for data traffic and do #web# and cross check that with customer care every couple of days 2 times and see if that adds up with your traffic. Damn .. still managed to write a book..

They don't throttle if you are on an unlimited plan unless you are in the top 5%. I had a customer last month who used 28GB in one month streaming netflix all day every day. Needless to say he was being throttled. They actually put a code on your account if you are being throttled that any rep can see and they send you an automated text message. So it is not a surprise, so unless you got this text then you are experiencing slower speeds for some other reason.

I've downloaded 8gigs in a month before without being throttled.
If you're leaving AT&T, you have these options:
Verizon. Basically the same as AT&T except a few dollars more. No unlimited data. They throttle.
T-Mobile. Crappy coverage. Less expensive. Throttles you after 2 gigs.
Sprint. Crappy coverage. Unlimited data with no throttling, but it's only a matter of time until their customer base grows and their network has to stop unlimited and start throttling. You'll be in the same position eventually with crappier coverage.
Random bad credit carrier: Good luck with that.

If it really bothers you, then switch to the 3gb data plan.
If it bothers you even more, file an official FCC complaint. Many people already have.
We throttle the top 5%. The top 5% varies per market. I regularly pass 10gb and I have had no message on my personal account.
And think about what your other options are.
-2gb on T-Mobile
-Limited LTE data on Verizon, same as us. (they throttle too)
-Sprint - sure you get unlimited. but they have the slowest data out of all the carriers
So we have to bend over and take it? That's what we are doing now.

So your saying anybody that uses more then 2-3 gbs is in the "top 5%"? I just got the text that I'm approaching the top 5% and I'm just over 3gbs. I agree with the OP it's a load of BS if I sign up for something that's labeled unlimited it should be unlimited. I think its BS that they throttle it so low most apps like YouTube wont even work right. And for the government stepping in that'll take some REAL change in government, there is to much money changing hands in politics for real change to happen and get rid of the corporate government take over. I can't believe for one second that only 5% of at&t customers use less then 2gbs a month. If they started throttling at like 10 or so i would have no problem but after 2-3 they want us to get rid of our unlimited and go to a tiered plan so they can charge a crap ton of money and line their pockets just like the rest of the corporate greed out there!!!

The amount at which you get throttled varies per market.
And I disagree with it too. It sucks.
The fact that you say that it varies from market to market sounds like its very ripe for abuse on their part. I can't see how it could be justifiable to throttle me at a little over 3gb when you are using over 10 a month. Sounds like you know an end around the very system you work for. It all boils down to corporate greed and the fact that we in the USA have let companies like this get away with so much for so long that its just 2nd nature and everybody wants to say its the consumers fault.

I had a text 1 day before my cycle ended saying I am approaching the top 5%
Now you ask how much data I had used do you.... 1.5 gb
Now that is complete horse sh*t
Guys verizon does not currently throttle LTE customers, they do throttle 3g.
as for the APN tricks...we are noticing on the Skyrocket forum that for many it is not working any more.
The best you can do is continue to call in and have the specific throttle call response center note your account of any issues you are experiencing while throttled (i.e. I was throttled for 8 days during my last billing cycle and no web pages would load, text messaging stopped working, the market gave no connection errors, mms was not working at all) so that they know this is doing more harm than simply limiting speeds.
That and file a SPECIFIC FCC complaint. So far FCC complaints have done nothing but initiate a contact from ATT that this is the new policy.
The major problem is that as the throttle policy continues, the top 5% will drop as people use less data. This and the fact that the call center uses the consumer calling in to complain as an opportunity to have them switch to a tiered plan, on which they will not be throttled.
The given response is intended by ATT to be
1. The throttle policy is intended to be a temporary solution to the evergrowing need for growing spectrum and the currently congested network.
2. For immediate relief one can use wifi when available and one does have the option of changing to a tiered plan, which is not throttled.
Is it BS, yes, but it is what it is.
I did the math and we are better off staying with ATT right this moment.
Our six lines of service would cost much much more on any other carrier. In my case I could actually switch to the 5 gb plan and use 3gb over and still pay less than at the competing carriers.
How is the amount in the top 5% determened? I got my line way back in the day when smartphones were taboo and not "trendey" and it was known as cingular. I didnt half to pull matrix hack to get teathering. The software was on the disk and the instructions were on the owners manual. Why are long time customers have to be restricted now? I got my unlimited plan because I want and can make use my data. I got trottled only after two to three day in the billing cycle. I stream spurs basketball on nba league pass moble which would jusiffy getting such a plan. Why do I need to pay for wifi when I already paying for the use of unlimited data? Wifi is for the customers that need to ration thier limited data.
My brothers what can we do seriously to damage At&t for BS ing us. Tomorrow the can say anyone using 100 MB is top 5%.

I'm not sure I want to damage the company responsible for providing my network coverage. And if you cause me to have a dropped call I will eliminate you
I have received the message from att that Im nearing 5Gb and that if i got over i will be throttled. Currently i sit at 4.4Gb and still a few days left in this pay cycle. My question is should i go to the att store and get this corrected? Im able to control my own usage and keep it under 5Gb till the next cycle or i know of a way around throttling like the infuse had. Any ideas?

Their 5Gb might be your 4.4Gb. You may not be counting everything that they are. Give them a call and see if you can get them to reset it for you. Nothing to lose. Let us know what happens.
Ill be sure to keep y'all updated. Im not big on calling support Im just going to stop by the store on my way home from work. I just wasn't aware they throttle mid cycle.

Do they have you over 5GB? dial *3282# from you dialer and see what the text has you at for data. I track mine this way since it is what they have that counts.
Let us know.
No way in hell i did that this month. Just judging by the text messages. Something must have went south when i got my new phone.

Looks like you just switched over so they have have 1.5 GB of your previous data plan and over 5GB on the new LTE plan.
Did you set the phone up with LTE? I mean putting all of your apps etc. The first month I had my skyrocket, I used the most data I have ever used. Much of that was speedtest, which are 20+ MB a pop. Also you play with the phone a lot more initially and maybe do not use wifi where you would have before.?
Also there are some apps/widgets using data when you are not using the phone. Not sure if you have a rouge app?
Anyways, you can track the data weekly to get you through without being throttled.
Don't waste your time. I had to deal with this for 2 weeks. They throttled me a week and a half in of owning my new skyrocket(my first LTE phone ever) And by throttled I mean stopped. I wish it had slowed down, I would have been able to deal with that. So i was showing off my lte speeds to everyone, what did that expect. I actually got 2 people to buy the skyrocket within that first week of me owning the phone.
So I went to the Att store and told them about it and they were like I'm sure they didn't stop you, maybe they just slowed you down a bit. So the Guy runs a speed test and the needle never moves. He said that is amazing I've never seen them do that. He then tries to do some stuff on his computer but no luck. He told me to call 611 and they would probably work it out with me. So I call 611 and explained to them my issue and they said it was all controled by the system and there was nothing they could do. After going back and forward with the lady and her superiors I said this was unacceptable and hung up. The folks at the store could not believe it. So I called a couple days later and got this really nice lady. She pointed out that ATT just has to provide internet but they never said at what speeds. Dang they pulled one over on us unlimited folks. She she his is how Att going to make there money cause there not going to throttle those poor folks that are not unlimited... $$$$ bastards.
So I took my phone back and the store completely backed me on this. I said I no longer wanted to be apart of Att. Well needless to say here I am but that's another story. I think I made a deal with the devil. Lol
Well sorry to post my life story but just trying to help a little.
I just signed the petition "AT&T: Stop throttling the data speeds on plans with unlimited data!" and wanted to see if you could help by adding your name. Our goal is to reach 50,000 signatures and we need more support. You can read more and sign the petition here:

Yeah guess i had 1.5 from my old phone notice the difference comes to 4.4Gb. That will be my argument. New "data" plan should have refreshed the counter. I've had att for the longest time we have 5 lines with them. I hope they don't give me any trouble over 1.5Gb on a different band..after all that's why they throttle.

Don't go to the store they literally cannot do anything for you. Former employee here.
I don't care about a few days under speed i just want to know if next month will be throttled. If so ill just go back to my good old infuse for a month if that apn trick still works.

In the next cycle you will have a hard cap of 5GB and then you will be throttled. This was an annoucement made a few weeks ago. YOu will not get unlimited LTE speeds. Once you hit 5 GB you will drop down to EDGE which it looks like you are getting now.
Change your APN to phone temporarily while you are being throttled, you won't get LTE but you will get full speed HSPA+ and then change it back PTA when your bill cycle changes

From what I was told, that doesn't work (or shouldn't). Apparently the throttling flag is tied to your line or IMEI or whatnot and the system will throttle you no matter what system or APN you're on.

That is wrong... it is done via APN. I've been throttled numerous times and use it to bypass it

It isn't completely wrong...It is done via the APN and gradually they are killing the APN bypass..check out the skyrocket forums
the only way I found on the skyrocket to get the bypass to work recently was to use a telus modem
The APN bypass continues to work for some but don't be surprised if it stops
I just got hit by the throttle message and will i got throttled i am able to stream my nba games and actually use the phone.
not that i like or anything but i could be worse

but if anyone can fonde a bypass like the one i used with my skyrocked that be cool(apn trick btw)

Anything new with this? I just got the throttle message. Did a search, and this is all that popped up.
Nope I just deal with it. I'm still using 10+ a month. Even when throttled its still fast enough for what I need.

Hope it is still usable. I only get 1-2 mb download as it is where I live.
Just interested to see howuch people are using in data a month. Apparently I'm doin around 13gb a month

My uptake in streaming netflix went up this month. Already at 20 I think. Between that and downloading roms.

I use 4-15gb a month. Those extra game downloads (1.3gb for max payne) can add up quick.
Averages around 6gb, think it peaked at 10. I don't use wifi though as I don't see the point if paying for unlimited.
I did exactly the same things on 3g for a while & data used was cut by at least 50% but it's too damn slow.
I rarely break 1 gb even though I have unlimited data. However last weekend I was at my friend's when his internet went out so I tethered his whole network to my phone and in one night hit close to 2gb used. Only a few days left in my billing cycle so I'll probably end up around 3 gb.
I fluctuate between 8-11gB/mo. This tiered data thing is really gonna cramp my style, cuz I have no idea how much my FB queen uses. But she's on her Rhyme probably more than I am on my Rezound. But hers is only 3g, so I guess it can't be that bad.
Funny/sad part is, the HTC Rhyme is so slow and buggy that the poor baby wants to throw it against a wall half the time. It's soured her on android so much that she's thinking about jumping ship to the iCrap. Wait till she sees the Galaxy S3. She'll come around.
About 12gb

Between 2 and 10 depending on whether or not it's hockey season. I use NHL Gamecenter all the time during the regular season (tether my phone to my TV for full games on my big screen...wish the resolution was higher ) to show games my cable provider doesn't give me. During those months I use quite a bit.
I use anywhere from 2 to 3 gb a month and that is with having wifi on whenever um at home. Strictly 3g where I live also so that probably makes a difference.

I'm at 2.5 gb this month but have been on wifi more than normal, last month my dog ate my cable modem power cord so I ran my network off of my phones wifi hotshot and I think I used 7 gb so I'd say I average 3 to 5 every month

Yea mine fluctuates also depending on a lot of things but it has rarely gone below 3gig a month and has been as high as 20gig...
i have to say i really don't understand what is happening right now with the data caps...Manufacturers are constantly making new, better and faster phones, the phone companies are upgrading their networks, and the developers are providing content to take advantage of the capabilities of these new phones and fast networks, Netflix, music, Skype etc., so many of these things are huge data hogs...
Why would the carriers limit the data so much...these new plans on Verizon are crazy expensive, i am grandfathered in on the $30 unlimited and that is a lot for me. I cant and couldn't use my phone the way i do now on the tiered data plan, i just wouldn't be able to use a smart phone any longer. i just don't get it...it seems counter productive to the whole scheme of things.
I'm a power user..
about 100mb a month.
haha always on wifi whenever possible here since the 4g sucks ass where I am. I don't wanna lose my unlimited because of the principal, not because I use it lol

20-45 GB a month.
last month i hit close to 160 gb because i left my hotspot on all night and i didnt put a password so apparently whoever was on my wifi was very happy and decided to to use almost about 120 gbs in one night dont know how dont know why but my speeds here in houston texas are very fast 60 down and 25 up so i guess they were downloading stuff thought verizon was going to say something but they didnt but i use around 40-80 gigs a month as i have no house internet but i do pay for my hotspot its the only way to keep the nat open when i play ps3 online!!!
average is about 100gb. most ever was close to 300gb. i used to tether a lot for online gaming... although every night i stream music and fall asleep leaving it streaming. i also stream videos a lot via netflix & hbo go.
No more than 10 GB a month, and usually around 4-5. My 4g service sucks and it's constantly dropping, so I use it primarily for Google Music and use wifi for any big downloads.
Used to get 30-40 Mbps down, but my speeds are closer to 5 Mbps now, so it rarely makes sense to use 4G for downloads any more.

Usually about ten . When I first came to verizon though ? 80 first month lol.

Hot Damn, Verizon has never harassed you about that?!
I'm usually only around 3gb, but I think that's still enough over 2 to warrant wanting my unlimited plan at its current rate.

I hope I'm doing this right
Average about 3-4GB, most was 7.
