[Q] Can I ROOT using my Mac ? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

After looking around for a while it appears that the Note cannot be ROOTED using a mac yet. If I am wrong please let me know as I would like to ROOT this monster asap. I have downloaded Heimdall but i'm unsure if you can use this in place of Odin or if you need a different PDA.tar file.?

Really? It's that easy on EA28? I was under the impression you needed the clockworkmod kernel flashed first. Anyone else have any insight on this?
Just tried flashing via ROM Manager and it's a no go. I need to flash custom kernel and the link that is in this thread is broken

Anyone else that can help me figure out how to flash clockworkmod kernel using a MAC with no ODIN (and no I am not going to run bootcamp)

From what I've read, Heimdall (or whatever the name is) doesn't work for our phones, so Odin is the only way to flash it. Setting up a VirtualMachine and using USB-passthrough probably would work, but otherwise you'd need to find a computer that can run Odin (you'd also need to use Odin whenever you change the modem used).

Heimdall works fine with the fascinate. I haven't used odin in months, and use heimdall daily to flash test kernels and such. Not sure it works with mac though.

There has got to be another way. When using ODIN how is it flashing it to your phone? Is it possible to use ADB commands through MAC to accomplish the same thing? Also there is a way to flash the clockworkmod kernel using a MAC, instructions are posted on the previous post (link) but the link within that thread is broken, anyone have the file??

Wait? You flashed clockwork mod, followed by rebooting and then selecting the update.zip and it didn't work?

Rom Manager can only install part of CWM. The rest needs to be flashed via Download mode, such as with Odin (or that other one, apparently).

I never used Odin until my eb01 flash...fyi
I cant even get my mac to recognize my phone. I searched 3 sites yesterday and still cant get it to connect. It says the disc is not readable.
I haven't been able to find samsung drivers for MAC. I can dual boot on my mac so everything for my phone I have to switch to Windows.
Here is all you need for using your Mac to push files to your SD (when the computer won't recognize), root, flash CWM... Only thing not possible yet is flashing the radio. So if you plan to upgrade to froyo you need to at least have the DL09 radio already.
Tried the one click root and it wouldnt work...said permission denied. Tried it about 5 different ways and never got past the first step where I was supposed to drag and drop files into terminal to be pushed to sdcard. Allows denied permission...i assume I was dragging the right files into the terminal.
You need to use the manual adb rooting method when rooting in OS X. Also to flash custom kernel and recovery, you need to flash them with redbend_ua.

edit: i come back to you defeated. I've searched and tried every damn method mentioned but it just won't recognize my damn vibrant. heimdall can suck my ****
Heimdall
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834195
do I need the same tar and pit files with hiemdall that I needed for Odin?
ok I found where to put the pit file and maybe the tar file but not sure about that one. it doesn't recognize the vibrant on download mode.
any macheads here with experience using it?
I'm having trouble too

+1
I've been trying to find a way to do this through xda, google, and youtube and I could find a tutorial or a how to. I tried playing around with it, but my mac isn't reading the vibrant for some reason. Help please
I recently switched from PC to Mac and have sort of been dreading the first time I'm forced to figure out Hiemdall. I do know that a few people here actually prefer it over Odin though.

Hahaha...Well said
if you get stuck you can always install a virtual desktop client on your mac like Vbox and run windows as xp is end of life install it and disable automatic updates and it wont tell you its a funky os copy.
then you can get odin if you prefer that.

[Q] PLEASE HELP: rooting device

I am a total noob so bear with me please
i have read loads of tutorials of how to root my device but they all use very technical terms
My current thing is bukj3 and i was wondering if i needed to put a certain official firmware before i root because im thinking there are certain roots for certain firmwares also i was hoping someone can give me nooby instructions lol
thanks
I think the most simple guide is probably this one.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
You should find the instructions there, and step by step guide fairly good!
For more detailed knowledge try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
hope this helps
Rooting is not very difficult at all
The easiest way is to replace the kernel on your device with one that is already rooted.
To do this you install a program called Odin on your desktop computer or mobile Odin on your phone and use this software to flash a kernel to your phone.
You download a kernel that is Odin compatible and flash it.
I'd recommend chainfires cfroot kernel as a first step. Download from this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Read the first few posts on exactly how to do it. It only takes a few minutes to do.
If you have kies installed on your computer the drivers for Odin will already be installed.
Install kies.
Download odin.
Download cfroot kernel (from link above)
Stop kies.
Run Odin.
Put phone into download mode.
Connect phone.
Select cfroot kernel as per instructions in above link.
Flash kernel using Odin.
Device is rooted.
If you need more help let me know.

I have kies installed but another problem im having is the samsung mtp drivers fail to install.. ive tried all solutions such as switching usb dwbugging on n off .. reinstalling kies and updating my windows service pack.. im currently using vista
If you put your phone into USB connection mode and connect to computer does the computer recognise the phone as a drive and let you view the files etc?
If so I think Odin will work.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Thanks alot ill try that
btw once ive done the cf-root is there a certain custom ROM you would recommend, you see for some reason i am having alot of game issues such as the characters and buildings being pure white and many games that are meant to be compatible for my phone send me back to my app list after the title screen plus they are meant to help with battery life etc.

Use Odin to flash speed mod kernel. Place it in the PDA and flash. You can download it from his thread here on xda. Just search Google.
Steps:
1. Download the kernel
2. Put phone in download mode (down volume, home and power)
3. Open Odin and click PDA and then find the speedmod kernel found here ( http://vln01.helochat.com/tourist/speedmod-kernel-s2-k2-21-Odin.tar )
4. Flash!!

View attachment ninphetamine-2.1.3-release.tar
just put that in pda in odin and flash
thats how i did it, its already rooted and has CWM then flash whatever rom or kernel you want if you want (that one's out dated now)
and the kernel the guy above said will be already rooted aswell so no need to use s2root

That files you flashed has root in it. Once flashed your all rooted. Speedmod is better than nemphetamine kernel

Hi, I'm pretty new to this too.
Just wondering, I used "GT-I9100_XWKI8_insecure.tar" to flash my Galaxy SII, then s2root. I get superuser, but I can't find CWM.
Can I use this kernel you guys posted as well? Or is it for his specific phone?
I'm really having problems getting CWM, and I'm scared of trying stuff before getting a backup.
So if installing that kernel installs CWM as well, and works for my model too, then I'm going for it.
Thanks.
hi, i have just recently got another galaxy s2 after nicely cracking the screen on my old one :S the stats are as follows
galaxy s2
4.0.3
i9100xxlps
3.0.1519100xwlp7sl340913
i downloaded and flashed the closes kernal which was xxlp6 (this was the closest) and now it seems stuck in the start up screen, odin flashes it successfully and it starts to reboot but all i have on screen is samsung galaxys11 with yellow triangle and it just hangs there and won't go any further, i followed the instructions to the letter so i don't know whats gone wrong, i found this thread and i have found and downloaded the speedmod kernal and tried to flash that over using odin, again it says successfull but will not go past the loading screen, please help i don't know what to do or what i could have possibly done wrong
thanks in advance, emma

Hi!
I just tried with the XXLQ7 kernel, and it worked for me. did you enter the password when extracting the zip?
anyway: there are easier ways to root than this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20075898&postcount=8
these kernels are prerooted and come with SuperUser App, BusyBox support and CWM*. And you don't need to use that "Samsung Quick Root" thingie. just flash the kernel in odin, the same way the other guide explained. (sidenote: afaik it doesn't have to be the exact same kernel (e.g. XXLQ7 or whatever) but only the same android version. no ICS kernel on GB rom but else you should be fine. if possible use one with v5.5 or 5.6)
if you really can't get odin to work (I guess you are using v.1.85), search for it on google, and use the newest version. (mine is 3.04, maybe there's a newer one alerady.) I've never heard of that problem, but one never knows.
*an app, very handy for backups!
