I recently picked up a secondhand Fascinate for my father and have a desire to root it and flash CM for him. Unfortunately, I've run into a roadblock right off the bat: I cannot connect my computer to the phone via USB. The phone only recognizes it as a charger.
The phone is vanilla and is at latest firmware.
The cables I've tried are LG cables from my own phone.
The computer is Win7 64-bit and has Samsung drivers installed.
Help?
EDIT:
Derp. Perhaps the issue is the cable. I've ordered an OEM cable to test this theory. Thoughts?
Cable could be the issue, I know it has been for some that have used after market USB/data cables. Worth trying in order to rule it out.
I would also strongly suggest using Droidstyles guide. Look in General section. Also, on my device, I sometimes have to "jiggle" the connection to the phone. Sounds odd but it works. You will know right away, pull battery and with ODIN open, plug phone in. Should show up in YELLOW.

Ouch, you may be in a jam. I bought a Fascinate on craigslist. I went home, and fired up Heimdall to install CWM [for cm7], and I got "No device found."
It was charging, but that was all. It would do nothing else. I did get it to connect just a few times, after cleaning the USB connector with a small brush [It was a dental brush actually ]. But it clammed up on me again.
I called up Samsung, they said "You need to have the OEM cable. If it's still not working with the OEM cable we will set up a repair." So I went on amazon and bought the cheapest OEM cable I could find [I think it was $2 or $3, it's OEM samsung, but it's shorter than I thought. :-S ]
I was lucky enough to have 1 month left on the warranty. Unfortunately, you might not be so lucky.
After the repair, my USB worked fine. But then, every morning, I would wake my phone up and it would be in a frozen state. [with about 1 frames per second on the Screen-on animation]
I sent it in again, they replaced the main board, and I have not had any problems since.
If you don't have any warranty [there is a 1-year warranty from the date of purchase], I really hope the OEM cable will work for you. If you're out of warranty, the the OEM cable doesn't work, I guess you might try cleaning the port with a brush, maybe you'll get lucky!
Gl
I've received the replacement cable and it seems to be working. My question is answered.
As a side question, what modifications you guys recommend for the phone in terms of stability and speed? Experience tells me to go for CM7 and CWM, but this phone's developer forum is quite a mess, with different variations of both.
I'd recommend either makelegs' CM7 kangs (in the dev section), or teamhacksung's ICS (find it at rootzwiki). Droidstyle's guide in the general section will get you up and running regardless of what rom you want to go for.
Thanks, k_niv, I've decided to go with makelegs's build. The ICS rom seems a bit... fresh. Keep in mind, this is actually for my father, who doesn't need to be dealing with bugs. He just wants his phone to work the way Android should: fast and Bingfree.
(I'm quite happy with my LG VS910, Gingervolt'd, but don't get me wrong, the Fascinate is damn nice for a year-old phone)
Thanks for the prompt help, my expectations were exceeded on this forum.

I just got a new T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant. Running 2.1 Froyo Update 1, on JI6 modem and 2.6.29 kernel. Stock unrooted so far.
When I plug in my Samsung Vibrant into my Windows 7 64bit Machine, it is not being detected by Windows Explorer. I installed Samsung's Kies Mini and to STILL not being detected by the program. I installed 64 bit drivers and nothing. I've tried a combination of setting under USB settings Samsung Kies, Media Player, Mass Storage and Ask on Connection. None of them work.
I enabled/disabled USB Debugging in combination with some of the usb settings. I've disconnected and tried every single USB port on the back of my motherboard. I've reset the phone, and my computer. NOTHING WORKS. If someone can point me in the right direction if would be GREATLY appreciated. This is my first android phone and so far its not going so well....Will give THANKS to anyone who helps. What my main goal is to wipe the phone clean, and install a 2.2 rom on it or even Vanilla 2.2 With Root. Still new to this stuff....
Have you gone to the samsung website and downloaded/installed the drivers for your phone?
Here's a link for within XDA that has both the 64 and the 32 bit drivers

I think my issue is my LG Data cable. I've read around and apparently I need a Samsung Certifed USB Data Cable?
Edit: And yes I got the EXACT same drivers off the Softpedia page. Gonna reinstall for a another try but I'm 100% sure its my gimpy USB Cable.
Ah. I suppose that's possible as well. It's the same with car charger sometimes too. If it isn't setup with the exact same pins that your phone has then it won't work. So, even if the connectors look identical, apparently they're not.

You need a samsung certified data cable.
The pins look the same, but they aren't. Once you get the cable (I'm sure it's not more then $5), it should work. If you have T-Mobile around you (you have canada, so go to the provider that offers the equivalent of the Vibrant), ask to buy a "SAMSUNG CERTIFIED DATA CABLE". Nothing else.
Ordered one off of ebay should be arriving shortly. Hopefully this fixes my problems.
Same Problem
I'm having almost the same issue. However, rather than not being recognized by Windows, it tells me that there's a problem with the driver. And that's after I reinstalled Samsung's driver.
I'm not sure if the problem is with the phone, or with the cable, or with my computer. I'll try again at work on Monday.
In the meantime, assuming the problem is with the phone, how do I hard reset the phone, wiping the Samsung update, etc.? If I do so, will the Android Store know that I purchased all my apps, or will I have to buy them again?
And what backup program do you recommend for copying all my user data to my micro-SC card so that I don't loose everything.
Used my old BB cable and voila. Thanks for the help guys it was the USB cable indeed.
So a little history, I flashed my vibrant from Bionix v1.3.1 (fishmanmod) to ICS and started to have a lot of troubles with random restarts and battery issues. Prior to ICS everything was perfect. I've tried so many different versions of ICS and all of them have resulted in random shut downs. The most recent one I tried was Slim ICS. After having such bad luck with ICS roms I decided to go back to Bionix. However my phone now cannot be recognized by my computer which was weird because it did when I flashed it back to stock to install ICS cleanly. I tried various different drivers, uninstalled, reinstalled kies, almost everything I thought of. So then I was like okay, I'll just go back to a nandroid backup of Bionix. Stupid idea, should have read up more on that as it softbricked my phone. Now I'm stuck with a phone that stays on the Vibrant screen. I can get it into download mode with holding vol+ and power but that is no use because windows keeps saying it cannot recognize my device. I can't get it to recovery mode either to flash any roms I have on the phone. It might be a hardware issue because my mothers vibrant gets detected with the same drivers but just a couple of days ago I flashed my phone back to stock with odin which really confuses me. Does anyone have any ideas I could do? Is there a way to get into recovery mode to flash different roms? Is there a manual way of installing the drivers or surefire way of knowing if the vibrant has hardware issues?
Also when I flashed back to stock with odin it did take a good hour of installing and reinstalling drivers for my computer to recognize it in download mode. I've tried 3 different cables, one by samsung and the other two are third party. All these cables work on my mother's vibrant. I've also tried a different computer as well, no luck.
Try deleting ALL USB drivers from your PC and plug in the phone. It should automatically search and download drivers. If that doesn't work then its most likely something to do with the USB cable. I recently soft bricked my vibrant too and my USB would not work at all but it worked fine on a friends phone(weird). So I bought a new one from T-Mobile themselves and it worked! I was really close to believing I had a bad USB port on my phone,if a new cable doesn't work that could be the issue for you. There are a few places online that will replace your USB port on the phone for around 40 bucks, a new USB cable from T-Mobile will cost around $15.
PS: You can search ADB reboot recovery but this will not work unless you can connect to the PC. I personally would buy a new cable from T-Mobile just to know if its a bad USB port on your phone.

Yeah I've read in another post about how someone bought a replacement cable from T-Mobile which fixed the problem. I find it weird how the stock samsung cable does not work yet the T-Mobile cable did. What makes the 15 dollar T-Mobile cable better? I'll definitely give it a shot though.

I'm not sure what makes it better to be honest, it's just one of those things where their cables work better. It is most definitely more durable than the stock cable that came with my phone. If you have a problem with Tmobile's USB cable not working then you most likely have a bad port on your phone(happens more than you might think). I feel like a new cable will solve your problem tho, let us know if it works!

So I bought the T-Mobile universal data cable in store for 12.99 and turns out it did not work. That's okay, they told me I could return in within 30 days to get a full refund. Now my only hope is to send it to someone who could repair it.
The phone can go into download mode, so hopefully once this usb port gets fixed I can finally get into odin. Thanks iTz KeeFy for the suggestion to try a different cable.

Your welcome, too bad it didn't work. Atleast you know its a bad USB port now. I know www.mobiletechvideos.com is a trusted place to send your vibrant. I'm not positive they fix USB ports but I'm pretty sure they do. I would check there first, good luck!

Howdy,
I've been scouring this place for some answers, but everything I've tried ain't workin' and I've got multiple issues.
Long story short, I'm on my 3rd vibrant from Tmobile and I want to get this thing rooted. I didn't at first, so I did the 2.2 upgrade via kies. Since then, I can't get my pc (win 7 64) to recognize that it's plugged in. The phone will realize it, but nothing showing on the pc. I've tried the obvious stuff; debugging on/off, usb cable is good, drivers are updated. My computer will recognize other devices, so I pretty sure its not the ports.
I tried to root using update.zip no pc method, but astro will not allow me to move the file to the internal memory.
Finally, I thought if I went back to 2.1 with Odin, I could get back some functionality. However, I get the phone into download mode and Odin won't see it either; none of the coms are lit up.
I'm to the point of asking for a replacement, but I'd rather get it done myself and avoid talking with support.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I would recommend buying a new usb cable. If the new cable doesn't work then the usb port on your phone may be going bad. If you do decide to buy a usb cable do NOT buy a cheap cable, go to Tmobile and pay the 15 bucks for a good quality cable. If the cable doesn't work then go send your phone in to tmobile, if your warranty has expired then visit www.mobiletechvideos.com and look into sending them your phone for a usb port replacement. It costs around 35 bucks if thats what you end up doing, good luck.
I am trying to flash my vibrant to stock, but my laptop says usb unrecognized. This causes Odin not to detect my vibrant in download mode. I have downloaded all drivers including nexus drivers, but still same error usb unrecognized. I have then start on switching data cables including the stock data cables but the errors remain the same. I have tried on different computers and different windows, nothing working its the same errors on all computers. I have messed up by formatting everything in the Vibrant, now it boot loops to Vibrant logo. I can get into download mode normal but I cant get into CWM or any recovery mode, its probably because I have formatted the whole phone. When the phone is off, I plugged in the micro USB to the phone from the laptop, all it shows is the white lines that are in circler motions and then freezes. Weird my laptop still detects it as a USB unrecognized. As the phone is plugged in to the laptop I try taking the battery out and my phone is still on with the frozen screen of those white lines in circler Motions. Can anyone help me, or at least explain to me what the problem may be? My thoughts is that it may be a hardware problem. If so can anyone provide me some schematics on the USB portion? I hope we can bring some light on this problem. Giving it to T-Mobile is not an option. I have dealt with many problems and solved it, but this is one problem that keeps me stomp in my own tracks.

Ok, so I am in a similar situation as yourself. I bought another Vibrant that was stuck on the bootloader screen. I gets into DL mode just fine, however Odin doesn't recognize it. I have uninstalled, reinstalled the drivers, used Nexus S and GNex drivers, 4 cords and 3ports and still no joy. My daily driver Vibe is like a mid-town flasher and is seen all over the place. So this leads me to believe that it is not driver/SW related but rather HW realted for me.
I think that my next step is to clean the USB ports on the phone and see if that works. If not, then I'll have to probably crack her open and clean there. I have another laptop that is using WinXP, so I might give that a try since nothing Samsung has ever been installed on it.
Keep me up to date with your findings and I will do the same with mine. Clearly I am not a noob but now this is just making me mad. Why one phone works/is seen and not the other. Common denomitator has to be HW.

I agree with you, it may be a HW issue. I have tried connecting other phones to my laptop and it reads it just fine, but for my vibrant no success. Im gonna go ahead and actally open it up and check on some componets, i have a feeling that it may have burnt one of the componets due to over charge. Ill get back with you on my findings. Keep me updated on your progress.
Before you open her up, have you tried cleaning the metal contacts inside the USB on the phone? I am at work not, so I can't try anything, but I would check that before opening. Might just need to be cleaned.

yes i've tried. I used a Q-tip and some alcohol, still same problems.
Update: Nothing!! How about you?
I have tried un/reinstalling the drivers, Odin v1.8, 1.3 and 1.0, about 4-5 cables and all 3 ports. I have cleaned the USB with alcohol and at this point am at a slight loss. The phone boots into DLmode and charges fine, so I don't think it is a faulty USB port. I cannot get into any recovery or ROM boot. All I have is DLmode and the GB bl screen. No kernel or ROM splash.
Gasp! I'm in a similar boat guys. My phone charges fine, and all my drivers are working and up to date...I can get into DL mode and all that jazz...phone even boots up and works! (fortunately)...but no dice on it being recognized by my or any computer. Glancing into the port, it looks like there may be some corrosion on the left hand side of the port, or some sort of damage...can't really tell without a proper magnifying glass. but it does look damaged or at least irregular. I've been reading around, and cleaning sounds like a potential solution...I've no idea how you guys are cleaning with giant q-tips lol but hopefully I can figure that one out also and give it a whirl xD But in the mean time, I sure hope somebody can come to the rescue
I don't know if this can help you guys, but this is how i hard bricked my vibrant few months ago. I get into download mode trying to get back to stock from ICS and my computer didn't recognize my phone....after a couple of hours my phone was completely dead and after a few days of research i brought it back to life using the unbrickable mod. What i'm thinking now is to use the Unbrickable Resurrector but you will need Linux...it always worked for me but i'm not sure if you need the unbrickable mod already applied. However i think if you have Linux installed you can have a try. Here is the link for the unbrickable resurrector http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17135277#post17135277
My I777 has been acting up lately, and now I'm out of options and wondering what my next move should be.
For several days when I'd connect the phone to the PC via USB, it started saying "this device can perform faster when on a USB 2.0 port..." - which, my ports ARE 2.0.. transfers were taking forever. Now, anytime I plug it in it simply says "USB Device not recognized" - I've tried the OEM cable, the plethora of other cables, 4 different PC's... *ALL* have the same result.
My concern is with a custom ROM on it and no way to get any PC to recognize the phone to get it back to root - how should I proceed from here for warranty purposes? I've only had it since March - just wondering what's gonna happen at this point - or is this even fixable? All the threads I've seen say it needs replaced... but with no way to unroot, etc., I'm just unsure how this is gonna go.
Thanks for any advice.

Absolutely NOT.
This is a situation that's been coming over a period of time, starting with the inability to see it as a USB 2.0 device when initially plugged in, and now has deteriorated to the point that it can't even be seen.

Yeah, I sure did - nothing. Even in recovery, it won't "mount" usb there either.
Samsung's have a crappy USB port. It fails sometimes. You have a hard time charging at all?
But like I stated above, even without a computer connection you can get Mobile Odin and flash back to stock, as long as your rooted.
I'm having this same issue. I just got the phone earlier this week and I am unable to get bit connected to my pc to root or Odin. I have installed and uninstalled Kies multiple times on two different computers, tries different ports, and checked if the cable worked by using another phone (PC recognized without an issue). I get the USB not recognized or the 2.0 USB message. If I enable debugging, I can connect regularly and transfer files through windows explorer. But if I use USB debugging off, then nothing will work. I've tried using odin and it will just get stuck at setup connection or cache.img and then I'd have to pull the device. I've tries updating through Kies when it shows the USB 2.0 message but once the S2 hits download mode then the computer stops recognizing it. I have also tried installing the i777 drovers on the Samsung website and its still a no go. Does anyone know how to fix this? Its not rooted so mobile Odin won't help me now.

It is the OEM cable that came with my Samsung Infuse. It worked with the T989 3 days ago and it's not working with my i777. Its strange because I tried it with my infuse again and I am able to Odin just fine. Could it really be an issue with my USB or will it be a PCB issue? I would rather or not disassemble my phone if it is a PCB issue. Should be able to do a warranty exchange though.

I hate to break it to you brother but it's damn near impossible to determine what the actual culprit could be, your best best is to try each and every single different thing I've listed. The end result being changing the PCB which one, isn't that hard, and two, is very cheap the only problem is waiting for the board to come in the mail.

I understand, which is why I'm hoping that by posting my story up, someone who has experienced the same problem can help. If not, then I can get others' opinion on it and when the issue is fixed, the solution will be available for future users.

Its the usb board on your phone.
I have the same problem so now I have to get mine changed too.
I've soft bricked my phone 2 times with this problem and it takes hours to get Odin to pick up my phone.
Swap the faulty chip and you should be good.

Its strange because when I enable USB debugging, I can get a "USB connection" on the phone and data transfers fine. But when I turn it off, I get a "MTP connection" and sometimes it'll connect (5% of the time) and allow me to transfer data. But when lies tries to update when that mtp connection is active, it'll hang when the phone goes into download mode. Did you have this same issue?

I f you're able to transfer files via mass storage with USB debugging enabled then you can (most likely) rule out hardware failure on your phone.
If anything this sounds like a driver issue on the cpmputer. Are you running windows? If so remove and reinstall the drivers for your phone.
Still think its hardware.
I can connect 1/100 of the times I'm plugged into a computer. Its not a driver issue because my girlfriend has an i777 as well and no problems for her connecting at all.
Its not ROM related because I have this problem with all ROMs.

Does that apply to ums as well? From his description he can connect in ums just fine. Its only mtp that's giving him problems. In his case, with the problem only being in one connection mode, it leads me to think drivers. In your case, tested against another s2 I'd say hardware.
Just tried using a Motorola cable and a third PC and my chances of connection increased to about 15-20%. Kies and Odin failed on me a few times just like I had described before. But eventually Odin was able to flash okay. Finally on ICS on my i777! I think I'll stay on stock since I'd rather not go USB and PC hunting to flash stock if anything goes wrong.
