AT&T Galaxy Note & Wifi Tethering app? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Just got my AT&T Galaxy Note yesterday and saw that it has built in Hotspot functionality, you just need to have it on your AT&T plan for it to work.
So my question... is there a free app out there (for non rooted) that will allow you to do Wifi tethering even if you do not have it on your AT&T plan?

There's no WiFi tethering apps for a non-rooted phone. Your only options are the apps like Tether (clockworkmod's), PDANet, etc.

If you were rooted, you could use Titanium Back up to freeze AT&T's "TetheringManager" and it will allow you to use the built in tethering (USB and WiFi) for free.
AT&T might have the ability to notice it. I wouldn't worry about it too much. They usually give warning before and action.

Use FoxFi
Doesn't require root.

There's an app called FoxFi that seems to work well and doesn't require root or a tethering plan.

Foxfi. It's free. Never say never.and I might add...the Dev says it's for non-rooted phones only.

i still have yet to be able to connect via wireless tether...no matter what version i use...
Using 3.0 pre 14 and it just works.
Maybe you guys should try and verify you are rooted....use root check from the market.
Thinking you are rooted and being rooted are 2 different things....no?

I installed the market version of Wifi Tether (currently 2.0.7):
https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether
It worked for me to a limited extent, but many features, including big ones like encryption and infrastructure mode aren't compatible with the Photon.
here is the link to the beta that isn't in the market yet. Works perfect and has encryption as well as other bells and whistles.

Most android tablets can't connect to adhoc networks. The photon creates a adhoc network. You have to root your tablet and change the wpa_supplicant file. Search the tablet forums for "wpa_supplicant" instructions.

Interesting that I never noticed this before but I got a No Access Control message when I start Wireless tether.
"Sorry but your kernal does not have all necessary features for the Access Control feature of this application. Access Control will be disabled."
Was using Beta 2 but downloaded the Beta 4 version. After seeing that message I hit ignore and never saw it again.
Anyone else see that message.
TS
OK - so I got it to work - it turns out that some windows 7 drivers are buggy as hell - especially for the intel wireless network cards - I installed a different driver (a generic one as opposed to the actual driver for my wifi card) and tethering now works.
Doesn't wifi tether for root have an infrastructure mode option? I thought it did.
Edit: Nope, it doesn't. Also can't use access control options at this time.

How to get back the orginal MotoBlur Launcher

I acutaly liked the 2.2 motoblur launcher. or whatever was on it before the gingerbread update the in store phone had that and when I got my phone it had already been updated to gingerbread:/ I know I can have like launcher pro and such but I liked the older moto blur
There is no way to downgrade back to 2.2(Froyo) so you'll have to use a 3rd party launcher and try to theme to look similar.

You can flash a fruitcake from the dev forum to downgrade assuming you have an unlocked bootloader

That is another way but then he would be stuck on Froyo instead of GB. I think he just wants the Launcher "look".
EDIT: Sorry, my fault, I just remembered I mentioned downgrading first. Regardless, I wouldn't recommend it.

If you do not have the 4GB plan the only way to tether is by rooting or using something like PDANet.

Free version of Telenav GPS navigation

After seeing people ask for a decent voice guided navigation app, I pulled the Telenav APK from my backups to share. It was posted waaay back in the early Captivate days. It's a free and legit version for basic functionality, which is plenty for navigation. It works the same as the AT&T Navigator app included in the stock phone from AT&T, but this one doesn't want to charge you $10 just for trying out the free stuff. You can upgrade to additional features for $10/month through Telenav, but there really is no need. It works just fine in basic mode.
Enjoy - slap the thanks button if this helps
Thanks for the app. I'm going to give it a try tomorrow....

Depends on what u consider better. Better graphics and voice. Same performance. Heavier use of battery though.

I use WAZE, and seem to be ranked as 195 in the state. BUT, I tired the navigation, it works ok, but too many loops.
I would be going down a street and all for no reason it says go in this subdivision and loop around and come back out. - of course I was smart enough to see that trick.
Still goona use WAZE because of the other users posting where the cops are hiding.

Thanks for this! I had a question. Has anybody tried to 'trick' Market so we are able to download this:
https://market.android.com/details?...sImNvbS50ZWxlbmF2LmFwcC5hbmRyb2lkLnNwcmludCJd
This is V7.1.1 (different from the one they call TeleNav GPS Navigator for TMO) and is available to Sprint users. This version has some 'nice' Widgets (equivalent to that of AT&T Telenav) that V6.2.6201121 doesn't have.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMiCL6hV85Q
I am wondering if this will still work on the AT&T network...and, we wouldn't have to pay a ridiculous monthly fee?
Any thoughts?

I am getting the same behavior as btothec as well. I am wondering how you were able to download in the first place godfirst? Normally, we (AT&T users) can't see this app in the AppStore as it is blocked...I found it via the Market.Android.Com site.
And, if you haven't rooted yet, you must have both AT&T Navigator AND Telenav installed at the same time (ex. AT&T Navigator exists on system/app folder)? Are you sure you aren't subscribed to the service (now)?

Now the number I have from att was ported over from when I had sprint, and my data is still stored with my number from when I had the free service with sprint. I even have the ability to look at my recent destinations which was taken when I was with sprint last summer.

My guess is gonna be a never. I don't see how an app that doesn't use root access can bypass the Verizon check. If I remember what I read correctly that change resided in the framework-res.apk
If rooted/unlocked then yes there is a mod which enables the native tethering

Yes you can. Pre 4.3 you could use several apps to access the native Hotspot feature with out having to actually have the service. With the 4.3 update all these apps are now broken and there's a message saying you're not subscribed to the Hotspot service.
Awesome thanks for providing the link. Can this be flashed on a stock rom with locked bootloader? I allowed my phone to do the OTA update not thinking about the bootloader lock :? grrrrr. I did get the phone rooted just not unlocked. If odin or stock recovery wont work any idea as to how I could get it on the ohone. Maybe ADB?
I had thought the courts and the FCC had ruled that Verizon couldn't charge it's customers an extra fee for using hotspot anymore. Can anyone confirm/deny?

You need a custom recovery to flash that file, and you need an unlocked bootloader(or bootstrap method) to load one onto the phone.

We are talking about REVERSE tether, which means that we want to use a computer internet connection to have internet on the phone.
It SHOULD be a standard feature as it is so easy to implement ! Some older version of android were allowing this easily and some phone maker were puting this as an option, now it's a hassle with LP !
