Hi all out there,
I've got a question which I think I know the answer to, but hoping there is a way round it.
The contacts I have on my phone are linked to facebook profiles which show the picture. This picture does not seem to sync to Google so when I view the contacts on Google, they have no image.
Back in the days of Windows Mobile and Touch Flo, the pictures from facebook used to actually sync with the contacts and transfer.
Anyone got any ideas how to achieve this?
Nobody any idea's on this one? Is anyone who is syncing their contacts and also linking them to facebook having the contact pictures synced back to Google?
Sorry, I just use Google Contacts as middle ware between my Mac running Spanning Sync and my Hero.
If its any help, the contact pics on the Hero from FaceBook don't make it through to my Mac.
Would be nice.
No, this is not gonna happen as yet. The Hero simply seems to link a reference number with the contact so that it knows what Facebook profile goes with what contact.
It's this that gets saved in Googlemail's contact list. No images are transferred as yet.
Maybe in a future update, but for now a definite no i'm afraid.

Cool, thanks for the reply, its what I thought, but its a shame
Cheers guys
I have a T-Mobile G2 Touch that is rooted and have had the same problem. Am I right in saying that the link between each contact in your phonebook and the facebook profile is saved to your google contacts but not the picture. I ask this as I have just wiped my phone and synced my contacts and no facebook links are showing, and as I have 80+ contacts this is going to be quite annoying each time I want to wipe my phone.
In other news I have just discovered an app which syncs the facebook profile picture to your google contacts. However the contact has to have the same name as on the facebook profile which is a bit formal for me.
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/10/synchronizing-google-and-facebook.html
EDIT: Somehow my phone has managed to sync all my contacts with there correct facebook link and the pictures from the facebook profiles are showing as well.
On that note, I was just going to share this...
http://heartofangel.com/google-contact-sync-1-0/
Just to let you know, just got to grips with this program, its great, only for PC users though it seems...
Lets you link your google contacts with facebook (seems to be either stored on google or facebook, which is good)
Lets you upload the current photo on facebook to the google contacts and stores it
Works brilliant, well chuffed! And the facebook link transfers to the hero so it gets the up to date details too
I have synched my contact list with Facebook, but when someone rings me their picture is really poor and pixelated. Is there a setting or something I need to change to display it properly? Does anyone else have this problem?
Probably this problem http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4147
Working workaround: create contact with name and photo only on phone then connect to facebook/google contact. Works but you must delete image from google contact (i didn't found option to choose[\b] account photo source).
Really I'd like to know is there a real cure for this.
I had this problem to. You can't see the pics if you sync it with the Facebook app. Instead I sync my contact (only) with Samsung's Social Hub and then manually join any contacts which the phone can't find automatically. Then I see all the pics, and they also get updated.
NOTE: I can also see the contact pics in LP People widget
Or just install this.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.androminigsm.fscifree
I use it on my desire hd and the caller id pic is very clear.
Sorry I'm probably being thick but could you explain that workaround a bit more?
I have the same problem, the pictures are really pixelated, both when you get a call and when you have them as a buddy widget on one of your homescreens!

Yeah, sure
1. You can install the Facebook app, but don't sync the contacts.
2. Open Samsung's Social Hub. Click on the menu button and then "add account". Choose "Facebook" and add enter your username and password. Choose to sync your contacts (and also the calendar and events too if you want).
Now you should see your Facebook contacts in your phone book (if you don't you need to enable it in the phone book's options).
The phonebook might be able to join your normal contacts with the Facebook contact, but on mine in didn't match too many.
To join them manually, long press on a contact and choose "join contact" - now choose their Facebook profile and they should now be joined.
When that person call's you should also see their status update on your screen.
If the pics on the widget come up blurry then press the widget and it should automatically adjust the image.
Hope this helps...
High there, got my SGS2 yesterday, rooted and all is well. I had a HTC HD2 before, and I have to say with recent android builds it was quite cool, but no comparison to the speed and beauty of the Galaxy S2.
One thing totally trips me off though and that is Samsungs Social Hub. I.e. when checking for Software updates you need to create an account... no go. But I digress.
What I want is for the contacts app to basically work like the one in HTC Sense,
which pulls in Facebook info of your contacts to the address book.
It will update the contacts picture (most importantly) and also updates/displays recent status updates.
I have tried apps like SyncMyPics (seems to have problems properly identifying contacts and complains about write protection on them) and Facebook sync (which finds 0 friends to match, even though there are several named identical between FB and the Phone book).
Please dont suggest just making an account at Samsung. I will NOT have all my address book uploaded and snooped through. It has to be ON the Phone. (Not using Google to handle my contacts either, no use of GMail).
JOINING the contact sets does not really work well at all, you don't get to pick which picture is to be used etc etc.
I'd like a priority-based link between my phonebook entry and the corresponding facebook profile, where the facebook profile info takes priority of the two.
Any suggestions? It worked beautifully in HTC Sense Desire HD ROM on HD2.
Have you tried installing Facebooks own app? Not used any of the Samsung stuff and I appear to have my friends photo, phone numbers and email addresses added, plus birthdays are appearing in my local calendar.
Sure have. In Facebook for Android the Sync Contacts option is checked at "sync all contacts", so is it in the Systems Accounts & Sync settings etc. Still, it doesnt seem to work. Maybe I'll give it another "delete all contacts" run and check my sequence again.
When i synced my Facebook contacts with my Google contacts, profile pictures were added.... great! but they are shockingly pixelated! When someone phones me and the picture pops up it look embarrassing, anyone else had this issue?
SyncMyPix works ok here. You can still manually "join" not founded to correct ones.
Just redid all my contacts, re-synced with syncmypics, this time it found 72 matches, but it didn't update the contacts. Also, when linking manually in smp, it loads the existing pic for cropping.
No other positive results either...
As I said, not using Google for contacts either. Must be a problem with the Samsung Contacts app? All Contacts were imported from a Sense-exported vcf file and have <HTCData><Facebook>id:XXXXXXX etc etc in the NOTE field. Might that be a cause of the problem?
I deleted it on a contact but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Yes, they don't look good! Also in my buddy widgets they are f*cking ugly. With my incredible s they were nice and normal, good looking. I would like to see it getting better too...
Ok... So I just found two things:
1. If I manually join contacts and the phonebook has a picture, that pic will be used over the Facebook one. Once that pic is deleted, the Facebook pic is used. (No hint as to whether or not it's a FB pic though, as the small blue F in HTC Sense)
2. When editing the contact and switching to the facebook tab on the contact, it says "Unable to edit SNS contact on the phone" - I guess this means that you can't edit your buddies FB pic on your phone, which makes perfect sense. Just wondering if "SNS" refers to a general social networking services or some particular Samsung service?
I must still say that HTC Sense did a better job integrating this type of info.

When you're looking at a contact card, you can choose which contact picture to use by pressing Menu > Mark as default.
The main difference from HTC is that the Samsung will only use the Facebook picture by default if there is not a picture already associated with the contact. You'll also find that the contact pictures taken from Facebook are sometimes stretched when you're in your contacts list to fit the available space (e.g. if the Facebook pic is rectangular rather than square).

SNS refers to the Samsung connectors for the various social networks the phone supports (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.). Equivalent of the likes of "Facebook for HTC Sense" that get used by FriendStream on HTC phones.
Thanks a LOT.
I'd never have guessed the "mark default" meant "select defaults" number etc...
So I logged into the social hub app and was a bit surprised it seems all traffic goes through Samsung servers? I remember Sense not asking me to agree to service terms, although I honestly tl;dr!-ed on the SNS agreement. Anywhere I could read up on that on a desktop screen tomorrow?
Weird thing is with Facebook for Android and SNS both running now, FBfA is labeled an "unknown" info source (displaying pictures in correct aspect ratio), while FB/SNS is labeled with the blue F but distorts the pics as mentioned...
So, so far the only upside to SNS is three ability to also sync the FB calendars...

I just purchased a Droid Increadble 4G LTE from Verizon Wireless. I have started to notice some things that were forgot about or missed. These things should be caught before release.
Android version
4.0.3
HTC Sense version
4.0
Software number
1.43.605.3 710RD
1. The FriendStream widget is not there but is hidden.
2. I also noticed that when delete pictures from the phone storage using the computer they still show thumbnails in the gallary but when selected they give and triangle with the ! in the middle
3. Contact merge does not update contacts across the accounts as did previously on Droid Increadble.

1. That's been commented on several times here. It's just not a link in the app drawer, but it still exists in several places.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764256
2. I pointed that out a few weeks ago, but no one has commented. I don't know a way to resolve it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816450
3. In the People app, it gives you the option to link contacts, exactly the same as it did on the original Droid Incredible, which I used for two years. It never updated anything on your Google account if you linked it to a contact on your phone storage, even if more information on the phone storage, and also vice versa. When I deleted my Facebook account on my Dinc last year, it deleted every contact who came specifically from Facebook, and deleted all information originating from Facebook from existing contacts. Linking contacts simply puts the two information together for one easy place to look at it on your phone. If you go back and delete all contacts from your old phone and then resync your Google account, you'll only get the ones who came from Google, no phone storage, no Facebook, etc. Every time I updated to a new ROM, I have to manually restore contacts from my phone storage after syncing my Google account until I just manually entered every contact from phone storage into my Google account.
IceDragon59 you are correct i was just putting all the annoying things in once place. Also the contact sync does not work for me as it did on the orginall Increadble. Maybe it is the same reason there is no Frienstream app or widget. But my contacts that should be linked to facebook arent showing there fackbook profile pictures like on previous HTC devices. Also I dont see Facebook for HTC Sense sync like before just Facebook for android.

Sense 4.0...yeah they changed a lot of the older functions to be merged into other places. People got used to the old Sense way of doing things. Whether these changes are for the better or not, time will only tell. But I agree, it seems a little too much in places. I think it's all part of their streamlining of Sense.

FriendStream is specifically hidden in the default.xml file. I believe the way they implemented Facebook for HTC Sense on this phone is that it is an add-on to the main Facebook app, and that's why it doesn't display. A couple of apps on this phone seem to work in a similar fashion. Since I don't have a Facebook anymore, I can't verify how the contact sync works from it. Currently I have nothing but a Google account syncing contacts. It's possible that you have to merge those contacts, then set each manually to update their photos from Facebook.

Thanks, but I have been going through and manually adding them. I guess it is something that I will get used to or switch to a different launcher. Launcher Pro has a widget like the friend stream one.
I'm trying to set the default contact type action when adding a new contact so it's saved to "Google" instead of "Phone" but cant for the life of me figure it out. It seems so basic and was easy on my Galaxys.
Anyway, I discovered that the phone defaults to saving people locally which doesn't sync with my Google account. I can change the "contact type" (when adding a new person) to "Google" and thats works but I was hoping to make that the default account type. Also, I noticed that once you save a contact under the account type "People", there is no way to go back and edit the contact to change that.
Also (and unrelated) I noticed a really strange issue...sometimes when I boot my phone, the "Contacts" icon in the app drawer changes to a "People" icon. It works just fine and is the same application underneath. If I reboot my phone, It will change back. I will post some screen shots below if anyone is interested. Possibly its a little bug..
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this..
* If it matters, I'm running stock 4.4.2 Unlocked/Rooted/S-On
Icon
Thought I would post the screenshots anyway.
In the first, the Contact icon is fine, then after a reboot, it's gone and becomes the icon becomes "People"....after another reboot, it's back to Contacts.
Kinda crazy...
I have the same issue with not being able to save contacts to Google by default and its really annoying. I tried contacting HTC support about it but if course they were no help. Hopefully it'll get rectified in a future update

In the People app, go to Settings>Open account settings. Is Google under the options, and is "Auto Sync" turning on? If you tap Google, does the Sync status seem okay? You might try to remove the Google account, and re-add it.
"People" is the name that HTC uses for this app on all its phones. "Contacts" is what Google uses, and on most other devices (like Samsung). I guess its just one of those silly things that HTC made different "just to be different". Its actually odd that "Contacts" shows up at all (then changes to "People"), and I've never seen that.
Since you are rooted, you didn't happen to migrate your contact info or anything related (call history, SMS, etc.) from another device?
You might try to navigate to Contacts (yes, ironically the app is still called "Contacts" even though HTC like to call it "People") in Titatium Backup and see if wiping add data helps.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
No, my contacts all reside on google and when I setup the phone and sign in, it just migrates them on to the phone. Auto sync is turned on and Google syncs just fine.
The issue seems to be that when adding a new contact from the phone, it defaults the "contact type" (the next selection after adding the name at the top of the screen) to "phone" which, of course, stores the contact locally. Because of that, the contact never syncs with "Google. To correct this, you have to change "Phone" to"Google". That saves it to my Google account and all is fine. What I was trying to do was make that Google selection the default when adding a new conact.
As far as the icon issue, it's just weird. I called a couple buddys to ask what they have and they all have "contacts" on thier M8's ..must be a smaill bug
I don't think people realize just how big of an issue this is... I just sorted the view of my contacts so I only see the "locally" stored contacts... There's dozens of contacts I will lose if I have to reformat... I can't believe I can't edit these contacts so Google will sync them. Wtf?

In the People app, go to Settings>Manage contacts>Merge contacts, and see if you can merge then to Google.
Is this on 1.54 or 1.58 software version?
In the people app try going to the upper left where it says phonebook, do the dropdown and uncheck everything but google and try to save a new contact and see what happens...

I tried that before hoping it would be the solution however that simply chooses which contacts to display on the screen.
Thanks for taking the time to post your idea though.
Solved!!
This was frustrating me also...
you can solve the problem by going into phonebook via the dialler app on your home-screen then swiping over to people and at the top left hand corner under 'phonebook you can choose which contacts are available...
by only choosing your google account now when ever you add contacts the default should be google and not your phone...
if you need to copy contacts from phone to your google account you can do tat by pressing the options tab (3 buttons top right), manage contacts, copy contacts. Solved!!!
Didn't work for me :/
I tried this solution and unfortunately even when I de-select the 'phone' option from the phonebook, the M8 still defaults to putting new contacts in the phone database. Very strange.... anyone else seeing this? Is there a replacement people/contacts app that can solve this issue? It's really inconvenient.
Thanks!

When adding a new contact, HTC automatically uses the last folder chosen as defualt for next ones being added. Hence if you choose google once while creating a new contact and save it, that (google) will become your defualt folder for future contacts too.
So. At post 13, didn't work for me, first time I would have fixed the problem naturally.
I have an m7 with the same issue. Tried everything started here and nothing works.
I thought android was supposed to be the cool OS that lets you customize at will.
Oh well.
Did this ever get figured out? It is driving me crazy!
Me facing it too. Does anyone solved this problem? Please let me know
