This would probably be better placed in the HTC Inspire forum.
From my experience with other devices...
Yes, you are correct. You can also wipe data/cache/Dalvik after the install. It will delete files and crap, and leave CM7 intact.
Hope that helps.

From my understanding (and experience), wiping battery stats should happen on a full (100%) charge. This can be done at any time (not necessarily directly after install, but also later) without losing data or anything crucial. When I see that my phone's only charging to 98 or 99%, then I trickle charge it...get it to 100% THEN wipe battery stats.

ok, just to make sure we're on the same page, i will install cm7. i dont have cm7 currently installed.. i have virtuous unity installed but i want to remove it to install cm7. you said that wiping data will leave my cm7 intact.. again, i dont have cm7 currently installed so i'm not leaving anything intact. hope this clears the air.

Well, it's always better to know what you're talking about BEFORE giving others advice on the subject.
Lifehacker has an article about it here.
Here's another blog that says the same.
Maybe you should charge to 100% before wiping battery stats...

Yeah. What I was saying is that you can/should wipe the data/cache/Dalvik before using CM7.
I normally install a new ROM, THEN wipe that stuff. But you can wipe before the install, if you want. The point was that wiping those items won't affect the ROM you currently have installed.
Actually, I have also wiped before AND after an install...and not had any problems.
Just to clarify, when you install a new ROM your old one will go. So when you say that you want to remove 'virtuous unity' and install CM7...that's slightly redundant and almost incorrect. When you install CM7, VU will be gone, but you can't remove VU without installing CM7.
I was just pointing out that you can install CM7, and THEN wipe those items. But you can also wipe, then install. Wiping data/cache/Dalvik won't affect the ROM.
EDIT: I hope I wasn't offensive (didn't mean to be harsh) or confusing. I just found your wording a bit off, there.

hey sean... i got 2 problems after installing cm7 on my htc inspire. first, i cant find the andrtoid market or google apps anywhere. where is it and can i still install it?
2nd, the music is horrible when it ends. when i stop playing my mp3s, the first thing i hear is static. i noticed that DSP manager is installed which is an equalizer. i had it both enabled and disabled. either way the music is bad. is there a way to get rid of this static? its annoying.

Hmm. I really don't have an experience with your device. But I can offer a bit of general advice, and hope it helps.
Often, gApps are a separate install. Try searching in the thread where you found the ROM for gApps. Or check the CM homepage. They should be easy to find. Also, I'd do the same for the market. Google 'htc inspire market apk download' or something like that.
For the music problem, I dunno. Again, there may be a CM volume fix on the CM homepage somewhere. I have heard of a volume fix for CM.

No worries. Happy to help and glad you got it working.
Also, since you're new here (it doesn't really matter to me, but other people think alot of this) when someone helps you out, you can click the 'Thanks' button in the post. This saves space in forums and also, the person you thank ...well we all have a "Thanks Meter" and one gets added to it with every thanks-clicked.
So, like I said, it doesn't really mean much to me...but some dev's are very proud of their "thanks/posts" ratio, and will greatly appreciate the button click.
Best of luck!!

[BASIC TIP] Keeping Your Phone Running Smoothly *Mods can you please move to General*

I don't believe Ive seen this mentioned anywhere yet, so I figured Id remind those who know, and inform the newbies who don't know.
Ive heard people who have applied various lag fixes complain that their phone slows down over time when opening apps. This "fix" i am about to mention is really easy and can help anyone not just those who have problems with an applied lag fix.
If you open Rom Manager and use Fix Permissions, wait for it to finish, then select Reboot to Recovery, and wipe Cache, and then go to Advanced Settings, and wipe dalvik cache, then reboot normally, your phone will hang at the Galaxy S bootscreen for a few minutes, it might take a while because it is rebuilding the dalvik cache, you should notice things running smoothly again and apps opening quicker.
Hope this helps anyone out there!
Does wiping those 2 cache's screw up installed apps? Where you have to download them all again?

No, wiping the caches shouldn't affect your installed apps.
And all the same, if you still worry about it, just run a nandroid backup before you wipe the caches, then if you run into any issues, just restore, or advanced-restore only your data partition.
cheers,
=)

So not a big deal cause I have replaced my update.zip with the clock work reboot update.zip and can reach clockwork still by "reinstalling packages" but I tried this fix and now can't reboot into recovery straight to clockwork through rom manager cause it says something to the effect of
E: can't reboot cause file /cache/update.zip missing
(bad)

Not exact but obviously there was a vital cached update.zip that was used in order to reboot directly into clockwork through rom manager.... Any idea on a fix? Think it would be unwise to just reflash clockwork through rom manager again to recache the file? Would anything else be effected like possibly overwriting my past nand recoveries? Thanks guys/gals for any help on this one.

yes, your missing the update.zip that unzipps itself to run clockwork. So yes flash the update.zip again through rom manager.
I just creates the update.zip file so it will not do any harm.

Thank you! Am trying this now and will post any impressions after.
EDIT: Immediately after re-booting, it definitely seems smoother and snappier - thanks again for this. I was wondering if I should do something like this, but didn't know what, because I'd flashed Eugene's Vibrant6 and a lag fix and then restored to my pre-flash nandroid. I thought the phone's performance was suffering after all that, and I definitely found this tip helpful, so really appreciated!

Which Rom,radio,kernel are you using???

Hey everyone!
I'm new to the thunderbolt and love flashing roms. I used to use the nexus one and just curious what roms, radios, and kernels everyone uses? I'm a big fan of cm7 but wanted to hear everyone's take on what they like/dislike about their current ROM they are using.
Thanks to all who reply to this thread.

It's all in my sig. I've run Chingy's ROMs on my devices for a couple years now because they aren't pimped out, overworked, quirky, experimental ROMs. He strips out heaps of totally useless garbage, optimizes them in all the functional ways every other dev does, provides excellent mods, and bakes in the best kernels. His ROMs aren't FrankenROM projects like Synergy, and they aren't attempting to bend reality like uberBAMF. They're based on the most recent RUUs and they simply work, which is what matters most to me. I'm the kind of guy who'll wipe a ROM if just one thing I use a lot doesn't work right.
That sounds worth a try....can u direct me to that ROM? Also, is it worth to do a2sd with the chingy ROM? Thank you for the input...I like cm7 but I like effiencey. Thanks for your input...look forward to hearing your next reply...

I've always thought App2SD was kind of pointless unless you had a need too. If anything, it's more risky because your SDcard can become corrupted a number of ways and having apps out there puts them at risk. Chingy's ROMs can be found at themikmik.com. I've NEVER been a fan of AOSP primarily because of CM7. I've run 5 versions on my dInc and all of them have been unstable and quirky. My girlfriend uses it now and likes CM7, but it's a constant battle to keep it stable and running the way it should. The 2 versions I've tried on my Tbolt either had functionality problems or rebooted. I will not tolerate a ROM that reboots if there's any alternative out there that doesn't.
Thanks again for your input...soooo everything that works the way it should?4g..Bluetooth, Skype, navigation, etc. Also...just download the ROM and flash? And its good to go if I'm coming from the stock thunderbolt? You mentioned everything was baked in.
Thanks again!

There are a couple of bugs in the leaked RUU on which the roms are based. One, no voice mail notifications (use google voice to work around that). Two, sometimes you cannot answer a phone call, you only get the option to end it. Not sure if there is a fix for that one. Otherwise the ROM (3D) was very stable for me and great battery life.

Radios don't come in a ROM. You need to flash those separately through a different process. Otherwise, pretty much yes. The kernel doesn't come running at those speeds or the voltages I have set. I undervolt mine even more than stock. You can see my voltages in the pics I have uploaded to XDA, as well as the time-in-state.
I've never had the problem with the phone answering that some people talk about. As for Skype, voice mail... I've never had a use for any of it, so I can't tell you about it. I definitely suggest reading the thread for any ROM... just gloss over it and you'll see what issues people have with it pretty quick. None are perfect, but they WAY better than stock.

So...I'm about to start flashing the chingy 3d rom...just a few questions if you dont mind answering...I currently have rom manager installed, and I'm using clockwork recovery.
This is the order I think from what I remember to do things..sorry In advance if I sound like a noob. I only flash roms every so often, so I forget some steps...
1. back up on clockword mod backup
2. wipe factory data
3. wipe cache partition
4.flash rom
5.flash radio (optional...where is the radio you are using loonatik? )
6.reboot
??????
also...when I did a back up just now..I get the following...
ClockwordMod Recovery v4.0.1.5
SD Card space free: 2912MB
Backing up boot image...
Backing up recovery image...
backing up system...
backing up data...
backing up .android_secure...
backing up cache...
No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext.
Generating md5 sum...
Backup Complete!
The line that worries me is the "No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext."
Should I worry about this?
Again, sorry for the noob questions...
And thank you for continued support and help!
Don't worry about the extension on the SD card. It just means you don't have yours partitioned.
As far as wipe:
Wipe cache
Factory data reset
Advanced...wipe davlik
Mounts and storage...wipe system
Flash the rom

The SD-ext is nothing to worry about. No need to manually wipe cache as the factory reset/delete user data function does that. It's good to format /system though. You won't be flashing the radio through clockwork, if that's what you were thinking of doing. That must be done through the bootloader. The radio I'm using can be found in my q AND a thread at the top of the Q&A forum, along with flashing instructions. PM me if you have further questions. I'll respond faster.

It's used for partitioning the SDcard to use part of it for the system's native file system. Nothing requires it.

Go into CWM
Wipe Data
Wipe Cache
Install Galnet
I recommend ALWAYS wiping literally everything off the internal memory, the wiping everything through CWM, and then put the ROM on the internal memory card and flashing it. Having anything at all on your internal memory could make the ROM do unpredictable things. Also don't restore any data with Titanium Backup. Only restore apps. Just helpful info that has saved me from the BS. Also one other thing I do use SetCPU, I dont use profiles I just set my minimum to 200mhz and max to 1200mhz Conservative settings.

That one is fine to use on Eclipse. But pretty much any other ROM we have (CM7, CM9, CM10, AOKP, Paranoid Android and I think even MIUI), you need to use the CM7 BSR named "MOTODX2_Bootstrap-CM7-signed.apk" which is found in the CM7 thread. That may have been the problem.

I think CM10 is more stable than any of the ICS ROMs. But with the stability, there comes other small issues that the ICS ROMs dont have. Its a trade off. Main issues of CM10:
1. Messing with bluetooth may cause phone to crash durring calls. Reboot fixes it until bluetooth is messed with again. (Might be fixed with an update)
2. Storage is in a different location. Not really an issue but its also swapped back to the original 4gigs for the internal. All your files will be flipped after using other ROMs for so long. (not a huge deal)
3. Due to the storage being moved around, apps that are stored on the SD card will disappear after reboot. (will probably be fixed in the future)
4. Flashing ROMs in recovery wont work. If any update comes out, you have to either SBF and update or nandroid back to ICS and update. (again, not a huge issue)
Other than that, I cant really think of any bad stuff. Its faster and I have no random reboots. I recommend it if you can live with the issues I mentioned which are honestly not bad.
Also, with the BSR files, in case you dont know already. When you are on stock 2.3.4, you first use the original BSR. Then when you flash CM10, you install the CM7 BSR.
Thanks JS

2. didnt aokp have that. I know the eclipse rom had the flip flop in it to read right but aokp i had to move my music and such so wouldnt i still be in the same boat or is it different than oakp?

Also curious i have google drive and have some of these installed on the drive. Will they still work or do they just dl to the sd and still not work?

1. I use bluetooth every now and then but I never turn it off. It seems that toggling the bluetooth on and off or visa versa triggers the issue and a reboot fixes it again.
2. I forget what Eclipse had. Its been so long. But ever since CM7, the flip flop mod has been included in all the ROMs which meant you got your SD card (which the droid X2 comes with 8GB) as internal storage and the actual 4GB internal storage was turned into the "external storage." CM10 reverted back to the original 4GB internal and 8GB external.
3. Everything you download and install on your phone will usually be installed on the internal storage. I think if you have apps over a certain size (which isnt very many. Mostly games), they are installed on your SD card. Those are the ones the system has a problem reading after a reboot. the actual files you have downloaded from XDA will still be there. Just installed apps might disappear.
4. Not really sure what you are asking here. But if you get A2 installed and up and running and A3 comes out, You will pretty much need to start over. But for me, thats fine. I use Titanium Backup and restore everything after a wipe anyway. What data are you referring to?

Pete's can be a PITA... If usb debug is enabled and unkown sources is checked just keep trying. I've had to "one click" 5 or 6 times before it works right. Close the program between tries. Also make sure your phone isn't in PC charge mode or anything.
Sorry for not updating this. After trying for 2 hrs I started trying everything. It turned out I had to use the cable that came w the dx2. No other cables worked
Sent from my MB870 using xda premium
Ah, my bad I should have read the time stamp. Anyway yea, the cable is a big deal (even though that sounds crazy.)

Lol oh and btw MD5 checksums are
"The MD5 checksum for a file is a 128-bit value, something like a fingerprint of the file. There is a very small possibility of getting two identical checksums of two different files. This feature can be useful both for comparing the files and their integrity control."

Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [ROM] {5.1.1 lollipop} Tesla v1.8 by GZROMS [vs985][Official][Layers]6/30. Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
So the 6/30 Tesla build for the VS985 is incredibly unstable for me for some reason...
It's very laggy and freezes up to the point of no return after a max of 15 minutes of use. I have to do a battery pull to get any results after that...I would love to run this as my DD because I love layers but I literally cannot use this...if someone could help me out that would be great. Thanks in advance guys and girls .:crying:

That's strange. I have been using it ever since I built it and its been running without a hitch.
Have you clean flashed? Are you running xposed, because that is usually the culprit of instability?

I even tried redownloading the ROM and flashing a different set of GAPPS(TK Full original GAPPS) and this time is hung up on "energizing coil" before it restarted itself twice then finally black screened and I had to do a battery pull. Like I said, I love the layers and I would love to run this as a DD but I literally cannot get it to boot up..I'll try out the next update to see if that works..it just may be my device that it doesn't play well with..
Oh and if it makes a difference , I'm on skydragon 4.0.1 it's a stock lollipop rom..thanks for all your hard work by the way Adam. You're an amazing dev.

You are using a 5.1 gapps package right? What you describe sounds like what happens when the wrong package is flashed.

No mobile data
I, as others have expressed in the dev forum, am having the issue with no mobile data at all. I am able to use wifi just not anything else. Below are the steps I have taken.
1. Clear everything (dalvik, system, cache, etc.)
2. Flash Tesla 1.8
3. Flash banks gapps.
4. No mobile data
5. Repeat steps 1-3, no mobile data
6. Flash 777 kernel, no mobile data
7. Flash Jasmine after clearing everything, mobile data works fine.
8. Repeat steps 1-2 only (no gapps), no mobile data
9. Adjust APN settings found in Tesla development forum, no mobile data.
10. Flash clean BlissPop 3.6 7/7/15, mobile data works fine.
I wan't to be clear I really like Tesla, but I've no idea what else to do.
Thanks in advance.

Trigger Warning: [Sarcasm] [Flaming] [Assholishness]
1. Read the freaking thread (both the Q&A and ROM)
2. Flash Tesla 1.8 and gapps just like every other time you have ever flashed anything to this phone. Lets be honest here, it is not rocket science.
3a. Setup phone using wifi then go into settings and turn on mobile data* or...
3b. Skip the setup and turn on mobile data*, then setup your accounts and so forth.
4. Enjoy Tesla
*since you read the thread (ROM thread), you found the link (https://plus.google.com/+CharG/posts/MCpbnqsXQyL) that I posted a few pages back that explicitly states in the first paragraph that mobile data is turned off by default.

I did read the thread and the post you mention. I did go to Settings->Data Usage and turned on mobile data, however I did omit that from my original steps. Thanks for the gentle reminder though.
To be completely certain it wasn't a combination of factors and my forgetting to turn it on during one of my many re-flashes I will re-flash and post back the results.

Have you wiped internal storage yet? If not thats what id try next. If you do make sure you back everything up first.

That may be the issue..although i used kdz to go back to 4.4 then updated to 5.x amd it still does it. Ill try that though. Why would i have to wipe if im already on lollipop?

Just a suggestion. There isn't much else you can do. Id wipe everything (internal, data, cache, d cache), then flash Tesla with one of the TK gapps. Good luck!
P.S. if you wipe your internal storage, make sure the ROM and Gapps are on your external SD card along with any other file you wish to save. You should backup your current rom to your SD card too.
Y'all are geniuses!!

So I'm pretty sure that wiping the internal like you suggested was the problem . I just wiped everything but external SD flashed broken ROM and their gapps, amd wiped it all again. And now it all seems to be running butter!! Thank you so much man. You and the OP are amazing. I'll donate when I get paid !

So I did a clean flash of Tesla 1.8 and Banks gapps again (coming from Bliss 3.6). Made SURE data was enabled, same issue. Clean flashed Jasmine 7, tested data, data worked. Clean flashed Tesla 1.8, enable data, data works. No idea. Bit concerned about the convoluted path to working data, but at least I am there now.
I am running a clean flash of 1.8. Since 1.5 I've had an issue where I experience extreme lag while my phone is charging in my car and the phone gets very hot. Didn't happen with my LG G2. It makes my phone almost unusable. Anyone have this issue or know how to fix it? Thanks.
