Has anybody worked out how to remove the language bar which pops up when texting yet? If I have the sudden urge to switch to Catalan half way through a text I will do it long-hand, that bar takes up too much of the already small screen!
Could you post a photo of what you mean, cost I don't get any language bar come up

I cant post a pic of it at the moment, but let me try to explain it better. When i go to enter text using the hardware keyboard a blue bar appears at the bottom of the screen (taking up approx 1/5 of the screen) with "Eng" on the left and an icon to show the status of the Caps lock on the right, along with a close button. This annoys the hell out of me as often when filling in passwords etc it covers up the "Ok" button.
Only way I found on mini pro is
Settings - Locale & Text
Uncheck the default input tick box
This works well on mini pro but stops you using virtual keyboard

Is a good intermediate solution but someone knows a way to get rid of this bar without losing the virtual keyboard?
It's build in built-in keyboard and I think it could not be removed (not easily without root hacks). The half-solution without root is to use another software keyboard.
Yeah installing third party keyboard software gets rid of the blue language bar.
I'm using SlideIt Keyboard which changes the virtual keyboard to a funky Swype-like keyboard but removes the language bar when using the hardware keyboard.

Can anyone recomend a decent keyboard replacement.
Also, i've asked this before (didn't get much of a reposnse) but is there a way to get spell check with the hardware keyboard?

I use AnySoftKeyboard, which is free and provides a reasonably good keyboard for when I don't want to open the hardware keyboard.

Currently there doesn't appear to be one.
I have ended up installing AnySoft keyboard too. Its ok, but removes the function where you could long-press a key to access the blue alternate option on it. It has removed the language bar though so its good enough for me!
Is there a way to remove the on-screen keyboard(OSC) from popping up every time i dock my SGT? It's pretty annoying and surprising that samsung didn't notice this. I don't need an OSC popping up when i already have a keyboard present. besides, i could always call it up if i need it.
Thanks!
When you beginning typing, you will see a little keyboard icon in the notification steam. Touch it and change to the Samsung keyboard. That should do away with it. There are also two keyboard keys on the dock keyboard. One is 2-3 keys to the left of the spacebar and the other is above the shift key.
They seem to give you setting options and on demand pop up a touch keyboard

I've already tried changing to the samsung keyboard but it still keeps appearing. I know how to make it disappear by pressing on the key beside ctrl, but is there a way not to make the on screen keyboard appear at all when docked?
I have not found a repeatable amd tracable method. Sometimes changing soft keyboard to Samsung or English works go not make it appear. Sometimes it works other times it doesnt.
I am not really committing lot to figuring it out until after the TouchWiz update. But i have yet to excessively use the keyboard to be honest. So i may have more patience. It would be nice to be able to define a dock keyboard behavior and a handheld behavior. It is also annoying to switch back to thumb or swift keyboards.

I was genuinely impressed by how easy landscape typing was in WebOS. I certainly couldn't hit regular keyboard speeds, but it was plenty fast enough for note-taking and the occasional blogging.
However in Android (both xron and regular CM) I've tried every keyboard I can find but the typing is always terrible. Anything faster than a few WPM and Android just starts skipping characters altogether as if it can't keep up.
What is everyone else's experience? Any keyboard that work better than others? Is this something that might improve in ICS?
Thanks all!

Which keyboards have you tried already?
Have you tried AI Tablet keyboard? The split screen mode is the best tablet typing experience out there IMO.
I use the " Hackers Keyboard". Pretty good !!!
It's in the market and free

OMG typing in webos is slow and painful. In android its nice and smooth.
I'm referring to on screen. With keyboard in webos its smooth, android no idea I cannot get the keyboard to connect.

Check out go keyboard that seemed pretty OK on the phone but on a tablet its probably better. Hackers keyboard I loved but on the phone it was a little tight feeling, I forgot about that I'm gonna try that on my tablet ill bet it fills out nicely on that.

I use and love thumb keyboard, but to be fair that is only for browsing and very casual use. I have the HP BT Keyboard for notes, doc writing, etc.
I second Thumb Keyboard... it's fast, works on both phones and tablets, has a bunch of themes, and a ton of customization options. I haven't actually tried the AI Tablet Keyboard beta that's in the market but looking at the screenshots, what's up with the split layout? There's so much unused space... Thumb KB puts a number pad, arrows, and common symbols there.
+1 for thumb keyboard...best keyboard for tablet..and i write emails, chat and etc....
I have to second AI Tablet keyboard
Hands down best keyboard I've used on this tablet - closest in experience to webOS keyboard, which I loved.
Once we have ICS the logitech touch keyboard will be tops. (IMO)

Just wish I had a way to get it now.
not really a solution but i notice a lot less lag when using a bluetooth keyboard. i always wondered if there was a setting that could be tweaked re: key presses.

I use this one as well. On my Droid 3 there are arrow keys on the physical keyboard and I never realized how much I rely on arrow keys until I started using a soft keyboard without them. The Hacker's Keyboard is also nice if you are working in a dos emulator since it has all of the IBM/PC keys.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll give AI Keyboard and Thumb Keyboard a try.
I've tried GO Keyboard, Hacker's Keyboard, Swiftkey, SlideIT, and Perfect Keyboard. They're not bad keyboards in terms of interface, but they simply can't keep up with my typing speed - dropping two out of three letters :s
I think the major issue here is that something is wonky with the touchscreen implementation . Like when you are on a webpage and you place your finger still on the screen and the page jitters all over the place. Pretty sure that issue is what makes typing in android annoying.

+1 !
Keyboard from Android 2.3 + by Kevin Lin is the fastest keyboard I've used. In 'advanced settings' 'keyboard layout' set the key height to 80 for perfect touch typing on a tablet in landscape mode.

That seems like a pretty big deal, I imagine devs are investigating it? Or is it a hopeless driver problem like with Wifi?
Thanks again for the suggestions everyone!

SlideIT is a good keyboard
Any suggestions on how to stop Samsung virtual keyboard from popping up when using Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 keyboard dock?
The only idea I have seen so far is to use Titanium to delete the stock Galaxy Tab 10.1 keyboard?
Thanks!
Surely you could freeze it using titanium backup rather then uninstall it completely

Thank you for your reply.
I have never used Titanium and never rooted a device.
I guess it must be time to try both
what rom are you using? It shouldn't pop up at all if you are using the samsung keyboard.
As ezcats said, it shouldn't pop up all the time... The first time I used mine, it did, but just push the key on the physical keyboard to bring down the on-screen keyboard and shouldn't pop up anymore. It doesn't on the Canadian stock 3.2 anyway.

Every time I touch the screen, the virtual keyboard pops up. Is there anyway to stop this from happening when using the keyboard dock?
I'm using the galaxy note 10.1, but this was a thread I found in my google search. I figure the same would apply.

I had the same issue and found a work around from another member. Go to the play store and install the 'Null Keyboard' app.
When you first drop the Tab in to the keyboard, you will get a message about the device will be using the default on screen keyboard. After acknowledging the message, press the keyboard key on the physical keyboard. Then touch the keyboard icon at the bottom of the screen and select 'Null Keyboard'. Done, no more on screen keyboard when touching an input field on the screen.
The only downside is that you will have to go through this process every time putting the Tab in the keyboard dock.
If this helps, click my Thanks button :good:
SwiftKey Flow keyboard now available in beta for phone and tablet!

I've had it for a day now on my Nexus 10 and GS3. Very impressed! The split landscape setup is especially useful on my tablet. Try it and shout out what you think.

Thx so much. I will try it.
dosent seem to be working for me. Its installed and set as default keyboard but swipe does not work
It's swipe in portrait and split typing in landscape. Makes sense for a tablet.

It's swipe while you aren't typing on a url, gmail and etc...
They need to copy thumb keyboard on the spacing and put TAB on main screen....

Not sure what you are trying to say here. The tablet version does not swipe in landscape. I have tried messaging, gmail, forums, notepads, etc. It does swipe in portrait. So, if I am landscape typing an email, then I use my thumbs to type on the split keyboard. Then, in the same process I turn it to portrait and then start swiping. This only makes sense, since swiping in landscape on a tablet seems a huge waste of energy.

You're right, I'm just typing from it and it's lovely. I'm completely sure I'll be buying it. What I was trying to say was that while entering an url, the swipe is disabled, and while typing passwords and such too, so I thought it was disabled all the time. The default android keyboard has swipe on landscape, so i thought this one would too. Thanks for the advice! This keyboard make typing so much easier.
Tried the tablet version and doesn't do auto predict for me.
Not sure what could cause that to happen. Did you configure it after install? Do any words show up?

Do you use boat browser by any chance?
Predictions dont work when using this app for me and apparently its because boat browser specifically tells the keyboard not to predict.
Neither swipe or predictions work on my nexus 10 with chrome and ocean browsers...... Why?
I use ocean and boat but works in nothing
Swipe only works in portrait. If it's not working at all then your best bet is to join the SwiftKey vip forums and report problems to them. After all, it is a beta, and as such they need to know these things.

Deleted this post. Issue was not caused by this app.
I've actually went back to the stock keyboard now.
The predictions are great when you can actually use them but the problem is they deactivate in most apps I use like boat browser. They say that's because boat browser instructs swift key to disable predictions, so why does the default keyboard still work then?
That and the complete absence of arrow keys like the phone version.
Patience expired with this app.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for secondary users either; you can install it, but it doesn't appear under Language and input.
