Developer needed to take screenshots for TELUS instructional video - Nokia Lumia 800

Hi all,
my name is Jordan and I work in the post production department at a video production company in Vancouver called Blink. You can find out more about us here:
http://www.blinkmediaworks.com/
We produce a lot of instructional videos for TELUS, including how-to videos for their phones. To do this we need screenshots from the devices, which in the past with other phones has not been a problem. With the Nokia Lumia 800 we just received from them, however, we have not been able to grab the stills we need because this isn't easily done with the Windows Phone 7 OS. We've tried unlocking the phone with ChevronWP7 (now "sold out") and through AppHub (which will not accept our credit card payment for some reason) in order to side load a screen capture app, but with no success so far.
So we've now decided to reach out to the developer community here to see if anyone would be interested in doing some freelance work for us by obtaining the needed screen shots. If you are interested in this job please send me an e-mail at [email protected] with a rough quote/rate for your time on this project. Check out the videos in the below link to see the videos we did for a previous phone:
http://www.telusmobility.com/en/BC/H...e/how-to.shtml
Thanks,
Jordan

For screenshots of a specific app you can do this quite easily on a PC using the SDK and device emulator. The problem with the emulator is it has very limited apps installed (just the browser) so if you need the phone/messaging/mail etc. then this is not an option.

There is a unlocked version of the emulator, too. It has all features that normal Windows Phones have with the exception of Email, Facebook, Twitter and Messenger

Send me a Lumia 800 for me to keep and I'll get you any screen shot you want !

[Q] QuickOffice on the Streak

I am in desperate need of a good efficient Microsoft compatible office program on my Streak. QuickOffice came preinstalled, but I cannot seem to upgrade to the full version (so it only reads pdfs). Also when I press the buy now button on their website, it pulls up marketplace and says it was not found. I have a support ticket open on their site, but so far no useful responses.
Is anyone else having this problem? Or can anyone recommend a program for reading word and excel (and maybe powerpoint)?
Another bizarre thing is that a developer (who I sent a message to saying the Streak does not display their app right) came back saying "due
to it's irregular screen size the graphics for the game don't quite fit". 800x480 is not irregular. Maybe the screen does have a higher resolution which is being scaled down like fards mentioned.
Company in Question: http://www.quickoffice.com/
.
Have you looked at documents to go?
Also I think the screen size is down to the dpi, they are using 160 dpi on the streak, don't think that's too common.
Well i had a good look around the tinternet for you and have to say there is not much out there office wise for the android
Like fards said documents to go is one but it says will not support office 2010 so from what i can see the one we have Quick office seems to be the best
Now i went to the marketplace found the quick office clicked buy now and it took me to the google checkout did you get that far ?
I reckon Quick Office, without copy & paste, is pretty redundant, that's a big & basic hole for a document editor, if it was the only option then I guess it'd still buy it and pray for an update!
Hi Fards, I'm about to purchase documents to go, I didn't know it existed for Android. I need it for creating and editing word and excel documents and then emailing them, do you use it, and are you happy with it for those basic tasks?
Regards,
Matt
Thanks for the feedback. It just seems like QuickOffice is the best solution currently out.
For the time being I may go with Documents To Go, thanks for the suggestion fards
@lufc
I cannot find it in the marketplace. Likewise, when I use my barcode reader from their website it says the app cannot be found. The same happens when I press the buy now button on the web page from my Android phone.
My Dell Streak is running Android 1.6 build 3562
Still no response from QuickOffice support.

I have a need for spreadsheet on the Streak and I compared the lite trial versions of both Documents To Go and QuickOffice. I decided that Documents To Go was much better.
Now that I have it I am blown away by its pdf capabilities whereby it word wraps the text so goodbye to terminable side to side scrolling. Amazing.
Having registered my intention to try it out, DataViz offered me the suite for $9.99 which is cheap enough so that I don’t need to compromise my ethics over it. You could say at that price it is a steal anyway - pun intended.
I use the paid for version of Docs to go and it really is good. I have used the word to go to amend work docs on the move and this week discovered the powerpoint viewer was very useful in outline mode as I could access all the notes straight from that view, which was helpful in my meeting as it also means less scrolling
Tbh I haven't used docs to go since my palm days many many years ago, but I was looking at it just before you posted The question.
I can't stand pirated software, especially when he developers work so hard and charge so little for their android stuff.

I use it on my Nexus One often. I don't create, but edit. I am very happy with Documents To Go.
Pm me if you want officesuit. I know where to download it xxx.

Although I am a software conterfitting whore for Windows, I do indeed support Android and their developers apps. Plus at such a minimal cost, it is entirely worth it.
Bad news though, I downloaded the Documents to Go shown in my markerplace and when I opened it to press 'buy key' it brings me to the search result for Documents to Go, but does not show the full version
Looks like a may be installing an illegal version after all... Or maybe after I root my phone to a newer build it will be resolved.

I bought it direct from the website using my full win7 computer. This was in response to an email from DataViz as follows:-
"Thank you for registering our Documents To Go 2.0 "Viewer" for your Android-based device. The free Viewer version allows you to view Microsoft Word and Excel files and attachments on your device.
We are excited to offer you a special price, direct from DataViz only, on our Documents To Go Full version upgrade. "
That mail contained a link and I followed my nose from there.
Maybe best to wait for DataViz to respond to your registration after you download and install the Viewer only version?
QuickOffice updated my support ticket saying they updated the installer and to look again.
Now fully functional, purchased the app with no problems
I got an offer email through today as well do bought it, much prefer the pdf reader to the adobe one. worth the 9.99 usd for that, the amount of emails I get with pdfs in..
I used quick office and docs to go on the iphone, docs to go was better. However all the features are not on the android version and I have found the quick office version better and functionality rich (although far from perfect). The main features that made it better was the google docs integration

I use the purchased ver. of Doc.'s to go on my EVO and just purchased it again for my Streak. I use the PDF viewer a lot. One of the things you can do with the pdf viewer is go to a restaurant's web site, download their nutrition info.. Then next time you wonder how may fat calories the super sized Whopper has, you will have it at your finger tips. You can also make color coded pdf/excell doc's on a pc then email them to your streak. Open them with doc's to go and you are all set.
I discovered today that you can't open encrypted files in QuickOffice, but Docs to go (the full version at least) had no problem with it!
When I say 'encrypted' I use it in the sense that MS office uses it - you put a password on a file and save it.

Quick office will not install
Hey guys. Like it says, I can't get it to install.
I'm running StreakDroid 1.9 and Steve has HD installed as a system app so I upgraded to the full version so I could create documents and it wouldn't install.
So I deleted it from /system/apps/ and bought QuickOffice Pro and couldn't get it to install either....
any ideas?
I've wiped the cache and dalvik cache just in case and that didn't help either

I don't think Skype for android does video yet. Check themes area, there are some threads there. Reelportal seems to work.

Calls Work
I have skype working on my tab with TnT lite 3.4 right now.
the android app doesnt have video yet, but i pay 3 bucks a month for unlimited calling in the US and my tab work beautiful to make calls, ordered a pizza off of it last night.
If your looking to video chat, the yahoo messenger app works great regonizes the camera built in.
But you have to download the yahoo mess app from the market and install it first, and then search for the yahoo messenger video add-on app for the video to work.
Good luck hope this helps.

Hello there new wannabe moderator! How ya doing
@OP:
We're flooded with similar requests for Skype; just did a quick search using the following keywords:
g tablet skype (http://www.google.com/cse?cx=partne...fhnf&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=g+tablet+skype&sa=Search)
Have a look at some of these threads, you likely find what you need.
Regards,
Just thought I would mention that I have been searching for an hour and still cant find a link....
I am using Yahoo messenger also. Video chat works great.
Fix that market!
Skype only showed up for me after doing the market fix.
Simple way:
-Force Stop Google Services Framework. Do not clear cache.
-Force Stop Market. Do not clear cache.
-Load Titanium Backup (rooted/free one works fine for me) and Wipe Cache for Google Service Framework.
-Run Market again (And you should get an Error!)
-Reboot and wait until all clear (SD scan complete and all) then load Market again.
While I appreciate the instructions as a newb, Not sure how to do what to do or where to get what to get.
How to force stop and titanium backup....
what any idiot knows, I aint got a clue about.

To force stop, go to Settings->Applications->System Applications and find the app in the list. Tap on it, and you'll see a "Force Stop" button.
Titanium is a market application. You can either download it from the market (if you can access the market), or you can download it directly from the author's site here: http://matrixrewriter.com/android/files/TitaniumBackup_latest.apk
Thanks to all.... I am not stupid but I admit ignorance. Than ks for the help..... Is now done and working and got skype. magic.
BTW how is winter springs. lived in longwood and sanford for 15 years.
thanks for the patience
So I guess the version that was released for Verizon phones like the Thunderbolt aren't easily ported over, right?
Seems only VZ phones support skype video.
Here is the bottom line.
The current skype app for android does not support video conferencing. Only audio. The video version released for the thunderbolt is not compatible with the gtab, or anything else for that matter. Many of us have tried to make it compatible. No luck.
Skype was just bought by microsoft. And microsoft is well known for killing their software competitors, so don't hold your breath for a video skype for android anytime soon.
That said, you guys should have done a search for skype and other video conferencing apps. I'll be a nice guy and tell you which ones work and which ones don't work here.
Oovoo - works for froyo and ginger.
Yahoo messenger - works for froyo and ginger, you need the vid plugin app.
Skype - only audio.
Google talk - nada...
Vtok - works for some people, doesn't work for others, I'm still trying to figure out the determining factor.
Gay roulette - works wonderfully... so does every other random on-cam masturbation apps. Makes me wonder. If these random video chat apps work so well, why the hell can't the REAL VIDEO CHAT apps work? Boggles my mind why we can't get a decent video chat app even though the porno industry is light years ahead.

I disagree, that seems to be an overly simplistic view of the situation.
MS bought Skype to offer more services and be more competitive with their biggest rival at the moment: Google.
Google has a variety of voice calling services, and MS has NONE- this is their attempt to attract some of that market. And just like they are pushing bing maps and search on Android devices, don't be surprised if they push their voice services there as well. They did not buy Skype in order to push WP7, I don't believe that for a second (MS isn't that suicidal, it makes no good business sense).
Remember, Skype makes most of their money from phone calls to regular phones, and that is regardless of what OS you use (Mac, Linux, mobile, etc). MS didn't buy Skype to run them into the ground. They can't afford to go losing paying customers on this investment, so it would be silly for them to drop the growing mobile user base (especially with Google Voice calls over IP dangling over our heads).
Also, lets not forget their apparent deal with Verizon to release video mobile versions. Just because MS bought them doesn't mean all current contracts and deals are nullified. They might have projects set in motion and obligations to finish before MS has a say in shifting gears.

LOL @ the gay roulette...
I've used Yahoo messenger before, and it DOES work pretty well, honestly- but it requires the person I'm calling to have YM as well, and to be perfectly honest, no one I know has it. Tango, etc, is similar- great service, if I'm calling other mobiles who happen to also have it installed already. Most of us are interested in Skype because we're calling family members, significant others, etc, who are not going to switch to a new service just because we have a cool new toy.
Oovoo is interesting- I didn't know they worked on Android (last I checked they didn't have a working client yet). I still have the same problem as before (no one has it), but I like the 3 way video feature. I might be able to convince people to switch to that because of the added functionality. Thanks for pointing that out!
Where can I find an oovoo .apk, though? It doesn't show up in my market (google or Amazon), and the version I found with a search here appears to be a beta that doesn't support video calling yet.
I'm running CM7 on my G-tab, btw.

You're forgetting something. MS is coming out with the tablet version of windows... called windows 8. Making skype friendly to google android will only enrich google more. If anything, they will make skype more friendly to windows 8 than anything else.

I'm not saying they're going to run skype into the ground. I just don't think making video chat accessible to android platform a priority right now for them. They will be coming out with windows 8 in a few months. I believe that's where they'll concentrate their effort.

The hacked version of oovoo specifically for gtab works. Here's the file.
Thanks for posting that, I'll try it later.
The Yahoo messenger app, meanwhile, is terrible! I remember it working ok on my Optimus' rear camera, but after trying it now I've had a totally different experience. First it wouldn't stop ringing (connected the call, but kept ringing, even after signing out. I had to FC the app to make it stop!), and even when it DID connect (on the 5th attempt), my video wouldn't transmit, and my friend's Nexus S I was calling only used the rear camera.
This app is useless!
Before I try Oovoo, it has just come to my attention that Fring supports plugging into other video chat protocols, including Gchat and Yahoo directly. Since Fring works pretty well on most mobile devices (I recall Fring to Fring working well, but didn't keep it cuz no one has fring!), could this be a better option? Then we could call other Fring users, and desktops using Gchat (or whoever is stuck using Yahoo IM I suppose). If I recall correctly, Gchat can even work in a web client without installing software, video and all, right?
That's might be a good alternative. Meanwhile, back to the whole Skype/Android/Microsoft thing, what ever happened to their aquisition of QIK? I thought part of the reason Skype bought Qik was to integrate their preexisting client and userbase of Android users into Skype. I can't believe MS would just drop all that, would they? And what will become of Qik in the end?

Yes, they would drop all of that. MS is getting ready to make a big splash with their windows 8 for tablet platform. The last thing they want is to add more options to their biggest software competitor, google.

This doesn't work on my gtab (CM7 n85).
It turns on, signs in, but video calling is inactive and any voice calls made/received are terminated as soon as picked up.
Yahoo messenger (with video plugin) was also reported to work. Yet, I wasn't able to make/receive any calls with it (IMs sent fine, calls never goes through).
Any insights are welcomed and appreciated.

Installing apps

Hi everyone
I'm looking forward to buy a new phone and i'm stuck between lovely lumia 920 and iphone 5
Can u guys give me a quick review about negative points of this phone? I mean in your own opinion.
And what are possible ways to install apps ,free or paid, on this phone?
Tnx so much
Sent from my E15i using xda premium
I am going to answer simply becuase I am courteous. The MS store is just like the Android Market or the iPhone app store. There are paid apps and free apps. Although most of the better stuff has to be paid for and the prices run from about 2 bucks and up.
Negative points? Hmm let me think...... It's not an iPhone.. Seriously, why would you want to be a sheeple? Nearly everyone and their mother owns an iPhone. Be original..
Seriously though our views of this phone are all subjective.. For example if you read some of the gripes posted such as the light leak which only shows from and extreme angle that you would never look from, or the creaking sound when you press on or flex the case which you should not be doing, or the shade of difference between the white of the display and the capacitive button back lights. These to me are all trivial things and just sounds like disgruntled buyer having remorse for some reason and now are picking the phone apart.
For me who has owned several models of HTC, Motorola, Nokia, and have had experience helping to program and update some Samsung devices, I have to say the L920 is the best built, fastest and smoothest operating phone I have seen yet.
My only beef with the phone which i have posted a thread about is it's lack of having a Flash Player. You can not view embedded Flash media in websites. To view Youtube you have to install a third party app. Adobe no longer supports mobile devices as of last year. So this phone was built with the anticipation of all sites converting to HTML5 and doing away with Flash. However that may be some time and until sites you like convert, you may not be able to view them on this phone if the have flash content. Is this a deal breaker? For some maybe. For me had I known this before I bought it, it would have been a deal breaker. But I am now stuck with it and will just have to wait till YT and other site convert if they ever do. The plus is that no phone created past last year will have the ability to view flash with out third party apps. So this may prompt sites to convert faster.
actually, to view Youtube video, you don't really need to install third party app (MetroTube for example), YouTube mobile site support HTML5 itself, just like VEVO, VIMEO, ... Just browsing YouTube via IE on your phone and enjoy your favorite apps.
About installing apps, there are some ways (easy to use):
- using WindowsPhone (WP) store app: find your app and choose install.
- using WP store (web version):
+ find your app, choose install -> app will be sent to your phone (wirelessly) and installed automatically.
+ download app, copy to SD card and install from your phone.
- unlock your phone and install any apps you could find on the internet.

[Q] A couple of questions for 920 users ?

Hello,
I'm fed up with my Nokia N-8. Works bad, is slow, freezes, has some hidden files somewhere taking all the phone memory, and generally pisses me off.
So now I'm hesitating between the Galaxy S4 and the Lumia.
I'm someone who needs :
- reliable phone in most situations. It would be unnaceptable to have no phone due to proffessional duties.
- A Citrix app (good), thethering on an Android tablet (even better) or both (awesomeness).
- Reasonable amounts of games for train strikes.
- Reasonable pictures taken (I heard the Lumia is amazing on this side)
- NO BLOODY NOKIA OVI SUITE. NO. NO. NO.
- A SIMPLE software to synch the phone music/pics/videos, and save the phone contacts. I'll be running windows 8 pro from tomorrow evening onwards.
- A VLC or equivalent application.
- A Dropbox App
- Microsoft Office documents read and write. Can you store Excel spreadsheets on this Skydrive thingy and read/modify it on the phone whenever you want ?
- And lastly a complete email client. I guess there's an Outlook on theese things, but could you please confirm ?
I know the GS4 will be better in terms of pure hardware, but I'm generally not a big Google fan, and I would like to avoid having work stuff on Google's Android. I guess if I take the Lumia I'll switch the Asus Transformer for a Surface 2 when it comes out. This said I was extremely pissed off with my whole Nokia N-8 experience, and try to be sure I'm not making the same mistake again...
Thanks a lot.
Kind regards,
A prospective
Wouldn't know about Citrix, Android tethering or VLC, but as to the rest, the answer is yes. I got my 920 as soon as AT&T posted them, and I love it.
No problem tethering an android tablet...or any tablet for that matter. Not sure on VLC

I'm using Windows Phone for years since in my opinion is the most stable and user friendly phone experience... In my smartphone telephony is still the most important thing, thats a reason why i left Android, it's not acceptable for my that my phone reboots and hangs on the pin screen which android did a lot
- A Citrix app (good), thethering on an Android tablet (even better) or both (awesomeness).
Wifi-Tethering is build in in Windows phone, don't know about a citrix app
- Reasonable amounts of games for train strikes.
There are enough games on Windows phone, sure there are more on iOS and Android, but now with native coding and xbox live every day more games are coming
- Reasonable pictures taken (I heard the Lumia is amazing on this side)
Windows Phone is the best an fastest picture taking experience you can get on a smartphone, every phone has a dedicated camera button which starts the camera super fast... and you can view your last shot in milliseconds.. which is taking ages on android... The quality of the pictures depends on your smartphone... if you want good pictures take Nokia or Samsung... but do not take a HTC for pictures ^^
- NO BLOODY NOKIA OVI SUITE. NO. NO. NO.
No ovi suite
- A SIMPLE software to synch the phone music/pics/videos, and save the phone contacts. I'll be running windows 8 pro from tomorrow evening onwards.
It's all done directly from the phone to your live account no need for a PC for pictures, calender and phone contacts...
If you want music or videos, just copy them from the explorer to your phone
- A VLC or equivalent application.
VLC is coming, right now you have xbox video... i play everything i throw at it
- A Dropbox App
I use Skydrive so i don't know abaout Dropbox
- Microsoft Office documents read and write. Can you store Excel spreadsheets on this Skydrive thingy and read/modify it on the phone whenever you want ?
Yes, Yes, Yes
- And lastly a complete email client. I guess there's an Outlook on theese things, but could you please confirm ?
Email is solid and built in, and you can even "zoom in" into your HTML mails unlike on android

Xbox video will not play MKV files. Or at least the encodes that much of the anime fansubs are done in.
Thank you for all your answers.
I will wait a little and see if I get along fine wih windows 8, and then I guess I'll switch to the 920.
Thanks for your time.
Kind regards,
T
I'm running outlook synced with work server. it runs well and updated all my contacts and appointments well. i can also update appointments and sync using my phone. only downside so far is pdf experience. Office files can be saved on phone and skydrive so you can work offline. I like also nokia map as it is offline as many times i am in china and don't have cell data only wifi. New update for skype allows notifications as well which was finally released. I been happy with phone only couple of hangs since november. i also dropped it from good height and only got couple minor dings on frame of phone.
Oh well.
I did my usual thing. Sigh. Say "f*** it". Ordered it.
I hope I'll like it

You are a little bit like me than...

Decided to give Windows a try- Got some questions!

Hey guys
So today I decided to give the Windows phone a shot. Been an avid Android user and follower since it started But decided that I should really give the other operating systems a shot. I just went and got myself a Lumia 925 and if I'm correct that phone is T-Mobile's variant of the 920 correct? I didn't see a thread for the 925 so I think this is where I belong. So with that here are a few questions I have before I dive into my brand new 925.
Just briefly looking through the forum here, I noticed some ROM's here. Are these different versions of the WP software or are these developers personal tweaks to it? I know with Android depending on what phone you have, you can root it and install the latest version of Android on it, currently 4.3, even if your phone prior is only at 4.1.2.
My other question is what apps does everyone here recommend on getting. I know the app market here is really lacking and its a total shame about that. I am pretty integrated into the whole google network (Gmail, Drive, Music, G+, etc). I use some social media apps but those are't too important to me. Suggestions for other apps would be amazing.
Really looking forward in giving this a test drive and in advance thanks for all of your help! :highfive:
no major differences in many variants of same versions... just every operator have own branded versions of firmware.. no way to root or unlock phone (not talk about SIM unlock)
phone market have enough good applications...
but Google and Microsoft have "cold" war and dont except major Google apps on WP platform
Nokia have own alternative for maps, HERE bunch of apps (Maps, Drive, Transit and City Lens) and very good Nokia Music service...
first at all install SysApp Pusher to easy access to Nokia apps and system apps updates
also check for Store Deals and myFreeApp to get notifications about promotional period of pay apps to get it for free
for Instagram use 6Tag
also check guides on http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8
for offline navigation you can use Nokia Drive+ or pay for Navigon USA, Garmin StreetPilot or CoPilot GPS (if you have legal licences you can use it on CoPilot without purchase new)
GetThemAll to download stuff from websites (videos, etc.)
Stop the Music! for stopping (kill) media player (or free alternative from market, just use search)

Awesome, thanks for all the info will definitely check out all the apps you suggested. Ya I know Google and Microsoft aren't on the best of terms as of right now which only really hurts the users in the long run. Thanks again for your speedy reply!

925 is enhanced version of 920 regarding camera, but without wireless charging integrated and also slimmer due this fact
Don't try 920 ROMs on 925 and vise verse..you will brick your phone.
Don't switch. Android might be slower but it has so much more to offer. There is no free video player on the Windows 8 phone. Nothing that can play MKV for free. There is no built in flash support so sites on the web that still use flash don't work. That is an issue with all mobile devices now though. You can't block unwanted calls. There is no app that allows you to do that as there is no app that is allowed access to the kernel thanks to MS protection Nazi's. As soon as my contract ends next year I am going back to G4. This phone is just locked down too tight.

Actually in the amber update that is now a built in ability to block both calls and text from specific numbers, though you have always had the ability to save a number and set a blank ringtone for it.
Most of the videos I play are either podcast or streamed via PlexApp both of which work great, and if not, you can always convert them using Zune, granted it is a bit of work.

That's what it makes it so fun fiddling with it!
dont forget about the wifi calling that t-mobile has.. while the other ROMs do not has it.
Since the Amber Update Gmail works fine, as does Google Calendar, both in the Native WP apps.
Get Metrotalk for Google Voice. It takes a few moments to configure but once you do it works as well as Google Voie for IOS including the ability to call from the App.
I too just switched from Android and I'm still on the fence. Most of the Apps I use are here but the are some near dealbreakers like Sirius/XM and my IP Camera app that are not present and probably never will be.
On the other hand, there are a lot of nice included features like SkyDrive and Nokia Pro Cam. Unfortunately, the choice is not clear cut. You have to figure out whats important to you.
I myself was hell bent on being a one device guy. Had the Galaxy Note and Note 2 so I'd have EVERYTHING all at once. Now with the Lumias (especially the 1020) getting such great cameras I may stick with Windows Phone. I do still have an Android Tablet though to get me by.
Then again, Sony's stuff at IFA like the Z1 or the QX cameras are so intruiging. Though, the Lenses won't work with Wndows Phone, or any phone bigger than 5 inches.
So, once again, I'm left scratching my head. Do I go back to the best all around device like the Galaxy Note 3? Or do I stick with the best camera? Or do I compromise, get a middling Android Phone like the S3 or Optimus G so I can slap one of the Sony QX lenses on it? So many decisions!
