[Q] Google Backup/Restore??? - TouchPad General

So here is a question...
I have been updating roms on my devices (TP, Samsung Galaxy S devices, etc)for the last year or so.
My question is why do some of my devices (TP to be exact) take advantage of the Google Backup/Restore feature where as my other devices (Galaxy S - Captivate & Galaxy S Wifi 5.0) do not. I mean, I check the boxes during initial setup to allow Google to backup/restore my settings but why do some work and some don't?
When I flash new roms on my TP (CM9) I notice that as soon as I setup my Google account, it starts downloading all my apps that are associated with my tablet. Not 100% but close enough where I have to hunt for only a handful manually. Of course all the sideloaded apps and Amazon App store apps don't load automatically but that's ok. I would then use TIBU to restore data on some of these apps to get the TP back to operational state.
Now, on the other hand, my Captivate (ICS 4.0.3 - ICSSGS RC4.2) and my Galaxy S WiFi 5.0s (GB - Stock rooted and GB - 2.3.6 Custom) do not start the auto restore after the account setup.
Why is this different between devices? Is it rom dependant?
Anyone know?

I noticed this too on my EVO when I used specific roms. For one of my roms, the developer eventually fixed the issue a few releases down the road. That's all I know of that though.

Generally, most rom developers prefer you to use something other than Googs backup. Titanium is a good example. Works well w/ backups, and restore. Alot of apps that are generally for rooting are not in market. Just my opinion...

I get that... that was my understanding and my experience so far... I just always wondered about the purpose of the Google Backup/Restore during initial setup since it never did anything... until the last few rom updates on my TP. The first time I noticed was with XRON GB rom... it was downloading apps (not all) even though I had deleted them all... odd I thought... and then I saw it with CM9 A.5 and A.6... and now with A2... and I am starting to like it... I use my tablet with apps loaded. I don't keep it for just testing...
I do use TIBU but I find it more assuring to install apps fresh from the Market after each update. This consumes a lot of time.
With the latest release, I was able to get my setup with all the apps, desktop configuration, widgets, etc... in 30 mins... fresh to operational in 30 mins instead of 3-4 hours that used to take for me to recreate my settings... I am a bit anal about how things need to look so I would take the time... now it seems I don't have to as much.

I always do a cwm backup before flashing a new rom. After flashing, I do a restore data. This gets all my apps back. It's worked fine so far.

[Q] Flashing Inbetween ROMS

Hey there XDA X2 Community, you are lovely today! Aside from that I have another question for you Masters of the X2! I have gotten the flashing bug; I want to try all of these awesome ROMS at least once. I have only tried CM7.2 BETA(Current) and MIUI 4 BETA. In the few flashes I have done I have had to wipe my data, and this isn't an issue, but it is annoying having to go and redownload the apps I once had. I would think to fix this would be to move all of my apps to the External SD. Is this right? If so, what's a good way of doing it quickly? Thank you all!
And how do I set my signature?!
Hello! Restoring your apps and data through an app like Titanium Backup can often cause issues. Things might not work correctly. You can sometimes get away with just restoring the market apps without the data, but it's generally not a good idea. The best idea (IMHO) would be to have a clean install of the apps on a new ROM. Try app list backup (free app). That should help with the process, and alleviate some of the annoyance.
In regards to your signature, use the drop down menu at the top of the screen labeled Quick Links. Under User Control Panel, you should see Edit Signature. If you don't see it, that just means you haven't hit the amount of posts needed to apply a signature.
I use the paid version of Titanium Backup and do not have any problems. I have went from Eclipse to CM7 and back to Eclipse using the same backups.
When using the free version I had TB freeze up on CM7 when selecting multiple apps to restore. I had to do them one at a time. But even with that, I didn't have problems with the apps or data.
Thank you both! I will definitely try TiBu but in the mean time I guess I'll be okay loosing everything lol. It's all good in the hood!
And I found my signature!

Titanium backup in cm7 sometimes dies not load BUT if you stop the app via Manage Apps it will. I use the paid version also, and really trust in it. I always get it to work. They also have great tutorials and support.

What should I do with my Nook?

So I rooted the Nook as soon as it came out a while ago. It started getting screwy recently. Wi-fi stops working. Random apps crash. I want to start over. What would you guys say is the best and stable route to go? I have the 16gb model and an sd card.
Stock 1.4.2 - Starting over with new partitions

I just wiped both of my 16g nooks last night, as I was wanting to repartion the internal card, and after looking over many many many posts, this is what I ended up trying. I can not explain how easy this was. Both are working great, albeit, stock 1.4.2 - Now, off to Root..

I meant more along the lines of which ROM seems to be the best route right now.
If you're still rooted, install indirect's app, flash clockworkmod recovery and flash cm9.
Unless you want to use your nook for high end games or netflix, cm9 is the way to go. Its pure sexy android tablet edition.
Make sure to make a backup in recovery before doing anything.
I guess I'm gonna give CM9 a go. I was just hesitant because its still in Alpha. Will the nook apps still work? Library....etc....
No, apps from the Nook OS, afaik, do not play well with other roms. You could try to back them up with titanium backup and see how it goes, but I don't think it'll go well.
FWIW, there is a B&N android app you could get instead.
That B&N app works with CM9?
The one from the play store does, yes.
Cool......Gonna give it a try then.
I am running cm7 internally and i backed up my games and apps that i downloaded from bn when i was on stock and they all work on my cm7. Im not sure if they would work on ics, but they do work on cm7. Also, the bn app from the android market works really well, as long as you aren't trying to read any of the interactive nook books.

Just wanted to let you know that I installed cm9 to see if the apps work and they do. I've tried all of the apps that I purchased from the bn appstore, back when I was on stock, and they all work wonderfully. So, no need to worry about that being an issue. By the way, the new cm9 release seems to be a whole lot more stable, so give it a try.
Sent from my Team-B CM7 Nook Tablet using Tapatalk
Oh yeah apps from the B&N app store should work when backed up and restored. The only reason they wouldn't if it is a paid app and the app developer has some sort of license check thrown in that checks to see if you paid for it. They could also make it so apps are tied tightly to the store; with amazon app store apps, you need the amazon app store installed for the apps to work (at least for the paid ones, in my experience) . It seems this isn't the case for B&N though.
System apps though from the stock B&N OS will probably not play well with an aosp rom. I imagine its similiar to trying to get something like HTC sense to work in aosp roms.

So I'm looking to go into CM7 or CM9...not sure yet. The instruction state that this will wipe all stock data. I was just wondering if its permanent. Will I be able to go back to stock 1.4.2 or whatever I want later on?

You can go back to stock/factory fresh whenever you want. Make sure you do backups - easier to to return to your current state.
In case you are worried that your paid apps won't work, all of mine do. I'm using quickoffice pro and office suite from bn as well as all.my games, angry birds and such. There may be some that won't work, but all ones I paid for still work with both custom roms.
Hope this helps

[Q] Most efficient method of switching ROMs

Checking out new ROMS is cool and all....But a pain in the ass....especially with the time it takes to set up your phone how you normally like it.
So my question is: how do yall get this out of the way as fast as possible?
Im sure some of yall crackflashers have this down to a science.
I generally use stock apps like gmail etc. so I try not to have too many apps to install. As a result, most of my data is in the cloud. If my game saves get wiped then I have the fun of replaying the games. Lately I've been using launcher 7 so not a great deal to setup with that.
Probably takes my less than 20 mins to get setup depending on what the base is. Ics settings tend to all be in the same place across rom types (cm, stock etc).

I use SMS backup & Restore for backup of SMS..
Contacts are stored in Google server ofcourse..
I am using GameOn (paid app that needs ROOT also) to save game progress..
I usually take backup (settings) of GO-SMS and Dialer-One using the app itself...
So ROM flashing and switching is always a breeze...
Titanium Backup PRO
You can do pretty much everything with it! In 10 minutes it restores apps, data and everything you want. You can also freeze apps and integrate updates in the internal memory, move apps, delete caches and lots more!

+1 on Titanium Backup..
Eases a lot on the Backup and Restore part.
There are alternatives such as MyBackup Pro.. Which done pretty much the same thing..
Albeit, Titanium Backup is a more popular solution

Yea but one thing you gotta watch with Tibu is that you cant restore system data (only apps) when switching ROMs. It will totally freeze up the system since the systems settings tend to conflict with the builds of the new ones. Ran into that prob last nite.

I have come across this on at least 3 other devices. Its most defective when changing to another android version. 2.3 - 4 for example.

[Q] For those with custom roms, how often / how long do you reinstall / update?

I'm considering switching from rooted stock to a custom rom, but hate the thought of having to reinstall everything / reconfigure settings, etcetera.
Even with Titanium Backup, it still seems like a huge hassle. (I use Tasker/Zoom for custom widgets)
For those running custom ROMs, how often do you update/upgrade your ROM, and how long does it take you to get your apps and settings back the way you like it?
After a full complete wipe to avoid errors and force closes. I sign into Google, sync everything and it downloads all the previous apps that I've been using. Sign into all my favorite apps. Setup my launcher and theme. Place widgets. Wallpaper. Sounds. Settings adjustments. For me 30 minutes to an hour. I'm not a Tibu master yet. I'd rather wipe everything and start new. Unless I'm using a Cyanogenmod nightly then I'll just wipe if it starts acting goofy. Check out Black star and Novena if you get a chance ..Nice Roms.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Titanium back-up pro one touch batch restores, (NEVER ANY SYSTEM SETTING IN RED) if you backup your launcher data all you'll have to do is add widgets again. And since I'm a minimalist and have 1 home screen with 0 widgets, I just set it down till it vibrates the notification that the restore is done.
Then change any system settings to my liking.
Depending on how customizable the rom itself is takes me from 10 to 15 minutes and I'm done.
What ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Said....g
like what darkchyld said... and try out blackstar and novena. Both roms are very nice, but i prefer novena just because it has the sg3 ripple effect lockscreen. If blackstar had the ripple effect lockscreen i would definitely go with blackstar. "wink wink".. Bigfau.. next update add the sg3 ripple effect lockscreen please. =-p
How often you flash depends on you. I like to try the updates but lots of users are on rooted stock.

I have 11 rom backups, all from the offering here..
And I'll use 5-6 different roms per week....
I'm a "TRUE" flashing addict......g
I used to flash a lot. I started with the sgs1 and I flashed almost everyday. Now I have the note and am still on aokps supported device list. I tried alot of other ROMs but I've always found I come back to aokp.
So to answer now I flash whenever aokp has an official release. So every few weeks and it takes me around 45 min yo restore all my settings and inverted apps and what not. Longer if I use titanium but I usually don't.

Maybe every month or so... Depends on whether there is an update to the ROM worth having or the device seems to freak out more often.
I have a titanium backup of the core apps that I use (Enhanced Email, ROM Manager, Tasker, Juice Defender, Swype, QuickPic, SMS Database, etc...) That I have set for automatic backup 2x weekly (Wednesday and Sunday nights)
When I flash a ROM, I just chain in the JB apps, Titanium backup, and my core apps backup... I can usually be back in business within 15-20 minutes of the first boot.
Every day or two

I do mine quite often about every other day. It only takes about an hour to restore everything back for me.
I also create my own mods to install certain apps with the rom and delete apps i dont want by flashing when i clean install rom. With my own themes too

I update the second I see there is an update, always dirty flash and 99% of the time no issue. If there is I wipe everything clean flash and restore with titanium back up. Root and flash away grass hopper.

What exactly will flashing a new ROM do to the user experience?

So i looked up a few ROMS from the sticky'd post on this forum and I am trying to decide which one is for me. Some provide a better description than others but at the end of the day I cannot figure out what I am really gaining and what I am losing.
I have a basic understanding of ROMs (or firmware or whatever people want to call them), but what it comes down to is a new operating system. My biggest question is what will I be losing? Right now my Nexus 10 is rooted but running google's standard os.What if I were to install Cyanogenmod 10 or any of the other roms. How does this affect my apps.
I have titanium back up installed so I can just back up all my apps and settings, but what user experience do I lose versus what is pre installed? How does Titanium back up work?
I know for cyanogenmod it says that there is no pre installed google related things. So I am assuming you will not be asked to set up your google account/wifi/language all that usual stuff google asks of you when you newly flash the memory, but what else do I lose?
Do some apps not work?
Does it mean I just simply have to reinstall everything?
Sorry I know this is a lot, but I am just questioning whether flashing a new rom is really worth it or is it intended more for older devices that do not receive the support of new firmware updates.
Newer ROM's and Kernels usually have more updated fixes and performance increases in comparison to stock. For example, franco.Kernel has a different throttling code, which helps out very nicely (goes to 1GHz in 1 step if the device is hot, and then down to 700MHz if it gets even hotter; no memory downclocking). Stock would downclock the CPU in increments of 100MHz, then spike it back to 1.7GHz, on top of also downing the clocks for GPU and memory. The difference in throttling can easily be seen in some high-end games like NFS:MW, which would slideshow on stock because of the aggressive throttling. franco.Kernel also has some fixes for the graphics and an updated WiFi driver.
But then again, what I just mentioned is mostly in relation to the kernel lol... I currently use rasbeanjelly because I like the dark theming (other ROM's have theming support though), but mostly because it's a stripped down AOSP build, that is very responsive I used to use CM10.1 nightlies before mostly because I liked being up-to-date (and nightlies come once a day with updates).

1. Like you said you have titanium back up installed, so as long as you backup all your user apps before flashing your apps, they will not be effected. (I have no clue how titanium backup works but it does)
2.Because of (I think copy rights) no ASOP will come with google apps ( Like google maps) but each ROM thread will direct you to a GAPPS download (which stands for Goggle APPS). You will just need to flash that ZIP after you flash your rom and BOOM you have all your google apps. You can still log into your google account at the startup, which has all your saved wifi's all your apps that you purchased on the PLAY store, all info in the calendar, etc. All in all you will lose virtual nothing after you restore your apps via titanium backup
3. Will you have to re install everything. Short answer yes, long answer no. After you restore via titanium backup, your apps will be just like they were before you flashed your new shiny ROM. But you will have to reorganize your homescreen, and redo your settings.
4. What will you gain? Well that all depends on what ROM you decided to go with it. That's what so great about ROMS and the Developers here, they provide you with so many different features. Like the guy above said, a new kernel can help with lag issues, or a new ROM can actually give you a tablet UI. Some of the benefits will be "under the hood" and you might not even notice them. There are many different features ( I recommond trying all the ROMS!)
5. I never had an User app not work because of a ROM
If you have anymore questions just ask!
(If I got anything wrong on here please correct me!)

Paranoidandroid to fix the dumb center buttons and move it back to the sides
That alone is worth an aftermarket rom
