Checking out new ROMS is cool and all....But a pain in the ass....especially with the time it takes to set up your phone how you normally like it.
So my question is: how do yall get this out of the way as fast as possible?
Im sure some of yall crackflashers have this down to a science.
I generally use stock apps like gmail etc. so I try not to have too many apps to install. As a result, most of my data is in the cloud. If my game saves get wiped then I have the fun of replaying the games. Lately I've been using launcher 7 so not a great deal to setup with that.
Probably takes my less than 20 mins to get setup depending on what the base is. Ics settings tend to all be in the same place across rom types (cm, stock etc).

I use SMS backup & Restore for backup of SMS..
Contacts are stored in Google server ofcourse..
I am using GameOn (paid app that needs ROOT also) to save game progress..
I usually take backup (settings) of GO-SMS and Dialer-One using the app itself...
So ROM flashing and switching is always a breeze...
Titanium Backup PRO
You can do pretty much everything with it! In 10 minutes it restores apps, data and everything you want. You can also freeze apps and integrate updates in the internal memory, move apps, delete caches and lots more!

+1 on Titanium Backup..
Eases a lot on the Backup and Restore part.
There are alternatives such as MyBackup Pro.. Which done pretty much the same thing..
Albeit, Titanium Backup is a more popular solution

Yea but one thing you gotta watch with Tibu is that you cant restore system data (only apps) when switching ROMs. It will totally freeze up the system since the systems settings tend to conflict with the builds of the new ones. Ran into that prob last nite.

I have come across this on at least 3 other devices. Its most defective when changing to another android version. 2.3 - 4 for example.

I've chosen the apps I need data for and it left me with force closes still. I don't know what to do -_- Phone works fine without restoring data but it's quite annoying to lose everything
You're gonna have to do a full wipe most likely, rebuild your app collection from scratch. It happens to the best of us
Do u use titanium backup cause if do try restoring app only

I let gapps install everything then any paid apps just for funsies.
I hand install apps when changing ROM type. Burr not with different versions of same ROM.
I only restore data on programs I have heavily modified. Mostly games.
I think restoring data on gapps especially when changing versions of the apps screws it up. After Weeks of testing different things, that's my conclusion. Either that or Firefox was messing stuff up.
How that helps

I'm getting quite a few apps now (maybe need a cull), and generally full wipe before before installing any new ROM or changing Android bases. I know it can be long winded method, but have the procedure 'down pat", but I prefer this way as I have nearly no issues ever, and probably saved much more time than wasting it on troubleshooting problems.
[Q] Is there a method to restore the ONLY app drawer folders together with the restored apps that were in each folder at time of backup?
I realise that this is a system app and could possible cause problems,
but just for future reference, do I use TWLauncher 2.3.6 restore data only, or is there some other way or setting to do it. If this is the way, I also assume this will retore home pages shortcuts and widgets etc. I don't really need that.
Edit : For trouble free restoration, I've normally not restored system apps or system data (red in TB).
Cheers

Yes, I think restoring data only will do the trick. You are risking FC's though, but it's impossible to tell without trying.
Another solution could be to use a different launcher and backup that launcher. This way you can restore without problems. It's not the solution your want, but maybe you haven't thought about it.
Thanks, might give or a go next time I flash, could be a while tough as this current CheckROM and DK kernel are pretty smooth.
Of course will nan-backup immediately prior, just in case of any FC's.
Never tried any other launcher for SGS2, other than TW, when i'm in the experimenting mood, might definitely give it a go.
Cheers

Hey there XDA X2 Community, you are lovely today! Aside from that I have another question for you Masters of the X2! I have gotten the flashing bug; I want to try all of these awesome ROMS at least once. I have only tried CM7.2 BETA(Current) and MIUI 4 BETA. In the few flashes I have done I have had to wipe my data, and this isn't an issue, but it is annoying having to go and redownload the apps I once had. I would think to fix this would be to move all of my apps to the External SD. Is this right? If so, what's a good way of doing it quickly? Thank you all!
And how do I set my signature?!
Hello! Restoring your apps and data through an app like Titanium Backup can often cause issues. Things might not work correctly. You can sometimes get away with just restoring the market apps without the data, but it's generally not a good idea. The best idea (IMHO) would be to have a clean install of the apps on a new ROM. Try app list backup (free app). That should help with the process, and alleviate some of the annoyance.
In regards to your signature, use the drop down menu at the top of the screen labeled Quick Links. Under User Control Panel, you should see Edit Signature. If you don't see it, that just means you haven't hit the amount of posts needed to apply a signature.
I use the paid version of Titanium Backup and do not have any problems. I have went from Eclipse to CM7 and back to Eclipse using the same backups.
When using the free version I had TB freeze up on CM7 when selecting multiple apps to restore. I had to do them one at a time. But even with that, I didn't have problems with the apps or data.
Thank you both! I will definitely try TiBu but in the mean time I guess I'll be okay loosing everything lol. It's all good in the hood!
And I found my signature!

Titanium backup in cm7 sometimes dies not load BUT if you stop the app via Manage Apps it will. I use the paid version also, and really trust in it. I always get it to work. They also have great tutorials and support.
SMILE It's Not Illegal Yet
So here is a question...
I have been updating roms on my devices (TP, Samsung Galaxy S devices, etc)for the last year or so.
My question is why do some of my devices (TP to be exact) take advantage of the Google Backup/Restore feature where as my other devices (Galaxy S - Captivate & Galaxy S Wifi 5.0) do not. I mean, I check the boxes during initial setup to allow Google to backup/restore my settings but why do some work and some don't?
When I flash new roms on my TP (CM9) I notice that as soon as I setup my Google account, it starts downloading all my apps that are associated with my tablet. Not 100% but close enough where I have to hunt for only a handful manually. Of course all the sideloaded apps and Amazon App store apps don't load automatically but that's ok. I would then use TIBU to restore data on some of these apps to get the TP back to operational state.
Now, on the other hand, my Captivate (ICS 4.0.3 - ICSSGS RC4.2) and my Galaxy S WiFi 5.0s (GB - Stock rooted and GB - 2.3.6 Custom) do not start the auto restore after the account setup.
Why is this different between devices? Is it rom dependant?
Anyone know?
I noticed this too on my EVO when I used specific roms. For one of my roms, the developer eventually fixed the issue a few releases down the road. That's all I know of that though.
Generally, most rom developers prefer you to use something other than Googs backup. Titanium is a good example. Works well w/ backups, and restore. Alot of apps that are generally for rooting are not in market. Just my opinion...

I get that... that was my understanding and my experience so far... I just always wondered about the purpose of the Google Backup/Restore during initial setup since it never did anything... until the last few rom updates on my TP. The first time I noticed was with XRON GB rom... it was downloading apps (not all) even though I had deleted them all... odd I thought... and then I saw it with CM9 A.5 and A.6... and now with A2... and I am starting to like it... I use my tablet with apps loaded. I don't keep it for just testing...
I do use TIBU but I find it more assuring to install apps fresh from the Market after each update. This consumes a lot of time.
With the latest release, I was able to get my setup with all the apps, desktop configuration, widgets, etc... in 30 mins... fresh to operational in 30 mins instead of 3-4 hours that used to take for me to recreate my settings... I am a bit anal about how things need to look so I would take the time... now it seems I don't have to as much.
I always do a cwm backup before flashing a new rom. After flashing, I do a restore data. This gets all my apps back. It's worked fine so far.
Hey there!
Im looking for a new rom for my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Preferably one where i don't have to do a wipe. And one which is one fast and good with battery.
Im currently running on Galaxy Task 3.2 Slim....
Kind regards!
Bump?

for all roms youll have to wipe unless you want to risk instability.
And why do you not want to wipe. It takes like 2 minutes to restore everything with tibu
Tibu?
The only reason i dont want to wipe. Is because there are apps on the tablet from my mom and sister. They get mad if i lose their apps... i will back them up before wiping and stuff. I just hate that. Cuz it always gets messed up...
Thats why i was looking for a rom without
Kind regards

Yup. Or "My Backup Root", which is great. It'll backup and restore all of your apps, photos, videos, music, SMS/MMS, and/or Data + more.

In this case you should use some backup tool as when upgrading to android 4.0.4 or even 4.1.2 all apps will be erased unfortunately.
Any one knows a good fast and most of all rom with good battery? Because compared to the ipad 2. Galaxy tab battery sucks.....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I like both the aokp and cm10 jelly bean roms. They are fast, but won't keep up with the iPad on battery. If you under clock it, it might.
there are several points to consider:
1. you want only the apps or also their data? if only the apps, the task is much easier, just check on the market for apps that can do backup.
2. if you also need data, than you must be careful. search deeply and choose wisely, especially if you plan big move (GB to ICS, ICS to JB). I found out that some apps don't work very good in cases like this to restore data. personally, I would backup with several apps, to be sure (and avoid your getting 'killed').
3. I think, but not 100% sure, that also the Samsung PC sw (Kies) can make backup and restore of apps and data.
