Hey guys, im just wondering, if you flash a rom for the amaze do you have to flash a custom kernel? also is there anyway to install a different keyboard like the ics keyboard from the market on stock o/s? i downloaded it but i cant figure out how to enable it!
also one more thing is it possible to brick this phone? came from the g2x and it was pretty much impossible to brick that phone. The only phone i've ever gotten bricked was the SGS i9000M from bell canada because its SD card died due to flashing roms
Kernel depends on the rom. Some require a custom kernel the must be flashed separate, others will work with the stock kernel. Any phone is brickable, some are more resilient then others, I don't think I've seen anyone claiming to have bricked an amaze yet. As far as the keyboard: menu> settings> language and keyboard> hope this helps..

I believe its the other way around. The rom depends on the kernel.

You don't have to flash the custom kernel but it depends on the kernel itself.
If you flash a stock rom then no. But you'll be stuck with a secured kernel.
If you want ICS or Sense 3.5 then you'll need the kernel.
Yes. Settings > Language and keyboard and check away.
Not yet. We don't have s-off so we can't flash hboots or radios. That's the number #1 cause of bricks.

when checking the ics keyboard you have to go anywhere where you're able to type, long press on the screen and tap input method then choose the keyboard.

Hello, would one of the amazing Devs and experts help me out with a rooting issue im having for my evo 3D
I am in Japan and have just bought the Japanese evo 3D
Im kinda worried about rooting because im not sure if it will screw up the software inside my Japanese evo 3D
I rooted my og evo and my sensation 4g before and loooove rooted phones but i was in America with american phones
Can anyone tell me if rooting will screw up my phone so it might not work over here anymore like connecting to towers or not able to send messages
They are kinda serious about rooting and unlocking stuff over here
maybe it wont effect anything at all and my phone will work fine, im just clueless right now
The newest update out here is
android 2.3.4
sense 3.0
software 1.09.970.5 and that just came out not to long ago
baseband 1.02.00.0906
build 1.09.970.5 CL221596 release-keys
If anyone can help me out i would be forever grateful
Thank you

Simple answer: Probably not but depends
Longer answer: The main factor I forsee is how to gain root access. Given the locked bootloader on this device, the process has been much more complex. Which version of he bootloader do you have? Does revolutionary work or is the only option HTC's unlock method?
The answer to these two questions will probably determine your fake. Either way, for the most part, having gained root access on the device and still running a stock ROM, will more than likely guarantee there are no tower/carrier issues.
Generally, with most custom ROMs, there should also be no carrier/tower issues but unless the ROM has been tested to work in Japan on those networks, there is no guarantee.
The only big conflict I would imagine would be taking a rooted device into the carrier for service. Probably best at this point to reload stock software and remove root access in order to ensure the device the hardware is using completely stock software and thus eliminate any odd issues from custom "unofficial" software.
As a side note, if you're read this far through my message, if the htc unlock process is the only option, my app, Flash Image GUI, works very well in helping flash kernels due to the HTC unlock limitation of not allowing kernel write access while in standard recovery mode. Have a few guides in the OP to my Flash Image GUI thread.
Hope that helps! Good luck!
I have the 1.5 bootloader and I just read all about the difficulties with it.
Thanks so much for the reply by the way
So your saying to do the HTC dev method to unlock to flash roms and then use your program to flash different kernel's?
I do for now want and kinda need the Japanese rom
So ill keep this rom if I use the HTC way?

Yes he is. You can change the ROM even if you use the HTC unlock method. Some things may not work properly if you flash the ROMs on here because of conflicting files. I learned that when I ported the Japanese Evo 3D ROM to the Sprint version of the 3D. You will have to flash custom ROMs based off the Japanese HTC stock ROM

I'm rooted...
S-Off... (soon, anyway)
Now I'm looking for an ICS ROM. However, I think I heard rumors that ICS doesn't play very well with Flash... Is this true? If so, I'm not sure I want ICS... I use Flash a lot.
The other thing is... I have no idea how to even begin choosing an ICS ROM. I do want Sense because I like HTC's weather widgets and lock screen. But I really have no idea how to even know what ROM would give me what I want... Let alone try to compare different ROMs... yikes. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Sorry, I feel sort of lost with a lot of this stuff.
Next thing I will need is how to install the new ROM, now that I'm rooted and have S-Off. Haven't found simple instructions on specifically that, yet. But right now, I'm mainly thinking about the first two questions.
To answer your first question. Flash works fine on ics. Your others are really opinion and hard to say. One man's perfect Rom is another's worst. I suggest trying them all and seeing what you like

Flash is fine. As for the roms if you want sense I personally love viperrez its very smooth for a sense rom. The installation is easy. Even easier if your s off, as with most roms, just download it, full wipe, and flash it in recovery.
If you want to try out different roms just make a nandroid backup of each ROM after it boots that way you can switch simply by restoring the backup files

So I updated to the ICS OTA update. I'm rooted, s-off, stock hboot, AR Recovery 3.15... I downloaded a Flash apk file, but it doesn't seem to be working on websites... Anyone know why? Or have a link to the latest Adobe Flash apk?
It's almost impossible to find anything on this subject in the forums because the word "flash" mostly describes other things here.
Check this recent thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1841370
What Browser are you using. I have heard it won't work in Chrome, it's not supported
S-Off Rocks! Who knows what Rom I'm on today!
What would be the best way to update both the software and to ICS? Through a rom or another form?
Find a rom in the development forum that you want, and flash it, simple as that. Most ICS roms work fine with older firmwares such as yours. If you want straight up stock, no tweaks or changes, check out virus's thread, he has stock roms with root access, if you want a different ICS rom, by all means go flash one. The worst that can happen is it doesnt boot/gives you bootloops, in which case you just flash a rom you know works, or run the ruu and start from square one again. No harm no foul

Thanks for the quick replies. I was only asking because I've had this evo rooted since day one using the Synergy ROM and Ziggy's OC kernel and I haven't had any problems, at all. Looked into some new roms over time that seemed to be "based" off of the the newer sprint shooter software, so I didn't know if I had to manually updated to that version first as I am still on 1.13 and not 2.08 etc. Finally, will this change my Hboot? (I'm on 1.4)
Also, do I need to revert kernels first? Since this one probably wont work with ICS

All it is, is just software, hboot and radios don't really have to do much with Sprint stuff. Most ics roms have intentionally been modified to work with older softwares

Hi guys I am a new and very happy EVO 4G LTE user. Got my phone almost 2 weeks ago. Its a very sexy device.
But I am wondering if I am using my phone to its full capabilities. I haven't rooted or install any rom , but I am familiar with installing roms. I did it to my Evo 4G. I am no expert I id go through a bit of trouble to get it right.
I want to know what are some MUST HAVE things for this phone. Ive read about google now and I would love to be able to use an app like that. I think I have to install a rom for that and i am willing to do it. I am a bit scared to do the rom and flash a rom because I dont want to mess it up. Its running so nice right now. But if anyone is willing to help me and guide me in the right direction so I install some cool stuff and most important something that is well made. I want to see if you guys recommend me some roms and maybe a guide on how to root it and install roms and do it all correctly.
Thanks in advance and if you can post some links to maybe youtube vids that would be greatly appreciated.
Rooting is pretty straight-forward. It just depends on what hboot u have. Zedomax's root method is preferred to htcdevunlock, but if u plan to s-off the difference is minimal. Sorry if this is confusing. Do u know your hboot version? To find out turn phone off, then when turning back on hold down power and volume down until screen pops up. Look for hboot version # and remember that.
As far as a good stock starter rom with google now and multitasking fix I'd go with flex 360's stock w/ goodies. It has the beauty of sense but with the better battery life and speed of a custom rom. Actually haven't found a rom I like more since I left the og EVO.
What is the difference between s-on and s-off? What are the pros and cons of each on.

The difference between son and soff is that soff gives direct write access to the partitions. Son does not allow you to flash the kernel unless in recovery or flash any firmware updates. There is a downgrade toolkit being worked on and it's looking good from all the talk going on in the thread.

if u and up rooting and flashing a rom try mean rom!! :good:
If you hadn't quoted I wouldn't have caught my typo lol
Speaking as a noob my self.. if you really want ot root your phone.. listen to the folks on this forum .. they are extremely knowlegable and have helped me out of a couple of jams .. and just read alot.. this forum.. and any thing you can get your hands on
Viper rom is the best customizable rom and battery life is getting up there (currently challenging viper and awillis!) Meanrom most stock rom ever and its mad fast (version 4.8) stock with goodies aka flex360 rom is focused on multitasking and before that it was smoothest stock rom and was a deep sleeper (havent tried the recent version). Cm10 by deck is best aosp version of jelly bean (4.1) still a nightlie build but its daily driver worthy. These were the roms ive flashed and ran the past week.. i kept switching, hard to stay on one cause all of them are amazing. I personally flash for fun and to try the stuff that the devs have given us. Choose whatever fits u and satisfy u. Dont forget these are the devs choice to give us, so take what we have! Im sure there are other roms that r good its just i havent ran them cause theres too much but kudos to any devs that take their time on building a rom for us.
Btw Plz dont bash on my opinions im just saying

No issues with WiFi or 4g at all. Every rom has some little things wrong with it, but no more than stock does.
U want to use the htcdev unlock method to root. It's really easy, just follow the directions. I don't have the link since I'm on xda app. Just search EVO LTE forum for root. It's possible that the regawmod root method will still work, but they both use the htcdev unlock.
Also, flashing roms is going to be different than og EVO. U need to flash kernel separate from rom using flashGUI or adb tools via fastboot. Unless u decide to go s-off, then u can flash rom like you're used to
I'm running cleanrom 1.5 and I love it! I rooted mine in July so I'm sure there is a whole new way to root it now. But soff is pretty awesome. There are some great kernals out there and they can do wonders for your speed and battery life.

Search zedomax root method for root. Then lazypanda for s-off. Just follow instructions to a T and u will be fine.
U lucky bc 1.12.
Another new user here. I'm rooted but everything else is still stock. I've got HBoot 1.12 so it sounds like S-OFF will be easy. After that do I need to update the firmware and/or radio or can I go straight to TWRP recovery and try out custom ROMs?

U can go straight to twrp now and flash roms all u want. Ur rooted and have hboot 1.12, so just install rom from twrp and ur good. If u had 1.15+ then u would have to flash the kernel seperate, but no need to worry about that.
If u want s-off u should probably just go straight from root to lazypanda since the closest thing to stock works the best. Just make sure u read everything u can and follow directions exactly and u will be fine.
As far as flashing radios u can do that, but go s-off first so u don't have issues here. S-off allows u access to all partitions on your phone. 1.12 is good on access as well but just not as much as being totally s-off.
Make sure u flash radios properly, never downgrade or u will brick most likely. Follow captain throwback's radio thread for further in depth tips.
I am Using HTC EVO 4G LTE in india under reliance india network.
I am using it for almost 2 months without any issues,
Last week i installed the Jelly bean OTA, from them onwards the device keeps on restarting every 5 min.
Its boots perfectly works stably for 5 min and then it re-starts.
I dont know what to do? .. Will downgrading to ICS will fix this problem.?
If so whats the best method to downgrade .. I am noob when it comes to this device. Please guide me.
I checked the forum but its with too many posts and got confused on it.
Honestly the first thing I would retry is a factory reset(if your not already s off) just make sure to backup any data you want saved onto your pc first. Perhaps even a phone call to your carrier as well that way they can document the issue so if you need a replacement later the paper trail will help.

There is probably ten thousand more people on here that can give you a more qualified answer than what I'm about to but I can tell you right now your gonna have to do the leg work and work your search bars...But I have recently been dealing with downgrading these EvoLTE's lately so I can at least help you narrow it down(a little).
Since you upgraded to JellyBean, I think the most important thing you will need to know is whether it updated you from the 2.13 firmware to the 3.16 firmware and whether your touch panel img was updated or not. If you were updated to 3.16 with the new touch panel, your basically going to have a heck of a hard time trying to downgrade to ICS...You'll have to get s-off and use a linux/ubunta live cd to downgrade it back to 2.13 so that you can then load a ICS rom. (BTW, if your in this boat, good luck because until they come up with a easier way to downgrade(if they ever do) it seems to be no joke, I wouldn't even attempt it, but I'm pretty much a noob to this stuff)
If your still, hopefully, on 2.13 , then all you should have to do is unlock your bootloader, and add the ICS rom to your sd card and flash a TWRP custom recovery then flash/install the rom through the bootloaders recovery(TWRP recovery). I would recommend the MeanRom ICS rom, it's easy to find and a great ICS rom that is basically stock. That or hunt down a stock 4.0.4 rom. Good luck.

Most likely not. When the EVO got the official update to software version 3.16, the firmware that came with that update included an update to the touch panel. If you have the updated touch panel you can only use ROM's that are software version 3.16. Using anything else will render the touch panel inoperable. Your best bet, as stated above, is to get S-off. Once you do this you can install the previous touch panel driver and flash an ICS ROM. You can leave everything else as-is. There is no need to downgrade your firmware.
