How is the Note at keeping calls? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Does it drop calls like the iphone? (Anyone actually switch from the iphone to the note and notice a difference?)

the phone is pretty good, no issues or dropped calls yet... pretty equal to my iphone 4S as it has the redesigned antenna. Way better than the iPhone 4 signal quality however...

That makes sense all the people who said I'll get more dropped calls had the 4 not the 4s.
Coming from sprint, i'm a little leery, but I can't handle their ****ty data network anymore. (Voice is still rock solid)

yea the iPhone 4 antenna is ****.

I've had a couple dozen calls so far and haven't dropped one. And they're loud and clear.

I live in Alaska and my Iphone 4 would drop calls like it was a hobby. I spend a couple of hours a day on the phone and so far the reception on the Note has been rock solid. I'm more than pleased with my upgrade.

Sweet

coming from the iP 3GS i can say the Note for me has slightly better reception in former dead areas, and the volume and clarity is quite a bit better. i am very pleased, as this is necessary for me to run my business.

Real World Comparison to Skyrocket?

Can anyone who has owned both the Note and the Skyrocket give a real world comparison between these two phones? I am considering trading in my Skyrocket for a Note, and I'm particularly interested in the screen quality, bluetooth connectivity, and battery life.
My skyrocket display is great. If I have lines or blobs, I don't ever notice. My bluetooth works, but I sometimes have to reboot to get it to reconnect to my car. My battery life is good, but I have to recharge every night or it will drain out.
I can't tell you my experience as I never owned a skyrocket, but my brother got a skyrocket two weeks before I got the note. One look and I drove him to best buy to enchange. Best buy rocks no restocking fee and he didn't even have the box.
sent from my iPhone killers killer, Samsung Galaxy Note.
I have owned both and STILL have both.
the rocket was/is a lil faster in its own right out of the box. but after roming them both out and running the same apps and web and movies. the note is just as fast on loading, and playing things smoothly. and of course the screen is better and bigger. i ran net flix, the note actually loaded up quicker 70% of the time, and looked better.
apps like cut the rope the rocket actually loaded up quicker. but both ran smoothly.
over all i cant tell to much difference in over all preformance of the two.
If the battery life were about the same and the bluetooth worked better, it would definitely be worth the switch for me.
The biggest difference is the note doesn't have the blue tint and the grainy screen like the skyrocket. After using the note for just one day i love it and now (as crazy as this seems) the skyrocket seems small in my hand.

I owned both... My wife now has the skyrocket.... Battery life and speed of apps and stuff is about the same. The note has better wifi and bluetooth range. Skyrocket has no voice dial with bluetooth. The skyrocket looks tiny to me now. ...lol no way i can back to smaller display

I traded my skyrocket in for the note and overall I'm much happier with the note. They seem to be about the same speed wise but the screen and battery life is much better on the note. My dell streak kept me happy for over a year but I'm not sure the note will be able to do the same. I'm ready for the quad core Note II.

I have had them both but turned the skyrocket over to my wife when I got the note.speed wise the skyrocket was just a bit snappier, screen quality,no comparison the HD note screen is awesome, bluetooth on the skyrocket was a little buggy at times but has been flawless on the note so far, sound quality is better on the note but max volume is about the same, wifi seems to be about the same, gps on the skyrocket works fine but the note locks on quicker, battery life is a little better on the note, aside from the s pen there are alot of little things the note has and does that's not there on the skyrocket.the skyrocket is a very good phone but the the note is better.

Bluetooth voice dial works fine on the skyrocket...you just have to install voice search from the market.
My wife still has her skyrocket. ..its great but i wanted the bigger screen. After about a week the battery life is comparible...radio strengths stronger across the board on the note.
The screen is hands down far superior on the note.
yuuuup

Anyone getting crystal clear phone calls?

Since my wife and I got our GS3s, we have noticed that sometimes when we call each other the quality is almost crystal clear. It's like we are standing in a room together.
It only happens on about 1 in 10 calls though.
Does anyone know what I'm on about?
We were both on Tmobile at the time. We are now on Orange and Three.
I've had nearly perfect reception and crystal clear voice quality on pretty much every call I've made and received. Granted I was on AT&T, so that might have something to do with it since you're on T-Mobile. So far I've never been disappointed with the in-call quality.
use the in call eq settings to enhance your calls to near crystal clear quality.
All these people having problems with their phone and mines been fine since day one lol excellent video recording audio, crystal clear voice calls and excellent still pics

This phone is HD Voice enabled. That's why reception is crystal clear. Also on HOX
I believe this will only work when both phones are hd voice compatible AND both phones are connected to cell towers that support it.
My brother and i both have gs3 and have not been able to demonstrate hd voice working and i believe its because of the cell towers/networks not the actual devices.

That is maybe because you both might be in same room still assuming you are miles away from each other !
Call quality is excellent.

[Q] GPS performance, loudspeaker and camera opinions sought

My main needs are:
1. Excellent GPS - Samsungs are universally crap and TomTom/Sygic/CoPilot always had me jumping around roads, forgetting where it was/which way the car was pointing when stuck in a jam etc. I just use TomTom now on my iPhone and whilst I hate iPhones their GPS/GLONASS implementation is excellent. Anyone used TomTom on a Z2? How did it fare? Both in dense urban situations and on highways and both on clear and cloudy days.
2. Loudspeaker - I do like to listen to radio in the shower and whilst I have no intention of ever taking a phone in there with me a good loudspeaker is a must. I heard the Z1 and possibly the Z2 had crappy loudspeakers due to waterproofing. Is this true? I'm not after a ghettoblaster but a good speaker is fairly important.
3. Camera - The iPhone 4S has a good camera. It opens quickly, HDR mode can cope with a moving toddler (my son rarely is still enough for other phones to cope with) and the camera can cope with shots where there is a window in there without just whiteing out the window area (l don't know the technical name for it but it's when the camera doesn't cope with light and darker areas well such as with the HTC One M8).
These are my main criteria and I'd like to know if the Z2 will meet my needs. It will be a big purchase for me and I can't afford to spend and lose money on a phone which doesn't do these functions well.
Everything else on the Z2 looks absolutely fantastic, just like the M8 and a Note 3 I had recently did except the M8 camera was truly awful (what were they thinking with that ultrapixel nonsense) and the Note 3 was terrible at GPS (five years on since the original Samsung Galaxy and the GPS was still like using a phone from 2005 when some phones didn't have true GPS).
I'd really value some honest opinions guys and gals!

1. Sorry dont really have much use for gps n only got phone this morning so untested
2. Right then, while i wouldnt say the speakers are crap they aren't the loudest, they do sound good tho.... im no audiophile but to me they sounded clear they just didnt go loud enough (altho i wouldnt rule out some form of volume increase app coming along for rooted users at some point) I havent tested the noise cancelling headphones yet but have heard they are very good. On a side note i received a free sont srs btx300 speaker, if you can get one thrown in then its well worth it. Maybe worth noting that altho the low volume may be caused by waterproofing you could keep it closer in the shower so it may not seem that quiet
3. dont know about hdr, ive yet to look at all the camera settings... but there is something called time burst while will 60 shots in 2 seconds, not tested it but read about it, apparently it starts shooting when you open it and it saves the 30 pics from 1 second before pressing shutter and 30 from 1 second after, you then pick the best one(s), should be perfect for capturing a toddler

I have to say I'm pretty disappointed by the speakers, thought they would be a lot louder.
The noise cancelling headphones are brilliant though, very clear, and good amount of bass.
A first I did think the speakers were pretty awful in comparison to the M8 however, once I enabled xLOUD from the Sound Enhancement settings it became very comparable!
As for the photos, I regularly take photos of skateboarding and the Timeshift Burst feature on the Sony phones is brilliant for moving shots. Like the other guy said, it constantly buffers the first 30 images while the app is open and then takes another 30 after you press the shutter, you'll always get a handful of great shots at the perfect moment!
As for GPS, I don't drive, but my phone is used as the sat nav whenever I'm in a friends car. I've only ever used Google Maps but I have to say it works flawlessly. Always accurate and very easy to use.

The speakers are just fine. Only the m8 beats it for loudness and quality. It's louder than the m7 which was all the rage last year so can't see what the problem is. The speakers on the z2 get the job done and pretty well too especially while watching videos and gaming.
As for the camera, it's to put it simply, only bettered perhaps by the lumia 1020. It takes the most amazing 8mp shots with so much detail it's hard to accept they're actually 8mp snaps. Colour reproduction is frightfully accurate with excellent dynamic range. Crank up the resolution and things noticeably degrade in quality in every respect mostly focusing. The shots are still to notch but just not as good as the truly incredible 8mp snaps.
Never had any problems with gps on any Sony device but the z2's seems better than that on the z. The weather app picks up my location exactly while that on the z was more general.

Since when do samsungs's GPS's suck?!
All the notes, S s, and even some of the budget phones I handled NAILED GPS co-ordinates/Google maps etc!
I travel..off-road too...and heavily rely on GPS.
How have you arrived at such a conclusion or your just a hater?
In regards to Sammy gps, I had galaxy s 1 2 & 3, and found the gps took a long time to lock on to satellites but when they did they were very accurate.

How is the Z2's volume when the phone is in your pocket? Just asking cause I work in a loud environment, also, how does the antenna perform when in a building ( like in the middle of a warehouse or basement of shopping centre or department store)? Thanks for the info guys :good:
Pre- ordered on 8/3 and still waiting lol....
The samsungs I've had (the first galaxy and a note 3) were terrible with gps and had me in fields or parallel roads and generally were unusable. Maybe I just had two duff units but looking on the web there were also many people having gps accuracy issues for driving on both models.

One of my friends got his Note 3 a couple months ago (he's a long time iPhone user) and we were headed out to meet someone. We were using the GPS on his Note, and for some reason the damned thing was off by a 1-2 intersections! I whipped out my Xperia Z Ultra, and it was spot on for our location.
Dunno what was going on with his Note 3, but damn it sucked. He mentioned that he had run into similar problems with it in the past, so it wasn't a one-off thing either.

Hmmm...never heard that before. The Note 3 rocks!
I assure you that his phone has some serious issues....it should be pin sharp accuracy.
Dying for a Z ultra 2 btw....
With a damn flash/torch!
Does the videos get recorded in mono or stereo? What's the fps while recording in 720p?

Remember that map apps use an algorithm where it assumes you are continuing on the road it's telling you to go on, assuming that any deviation between the position from the GPS and the real location is due to drift. So it might not be as bad as you think.
I've also had regular problems with my note 3 gps. So sketchy and unreliable. Anyway here's hoping the z2's is better. Hope this thing hurries up and releases in the states!

Call quality

When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the Essential Phone's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
On the handset, I "sound like I'm on a speaker phone", the other party sounds like they are talking to me through a tuna can. this is intermittent though. other callers I normally speak with sound normal (HD)
That's not normal.

I have T-Mobile and calls come through clearly...but when they work. The network signal is terrible even though my other phones with the same sim card all work great in the same areas. Essential must have either a really messed up software modem in this device, or the devices themselves shipped with either broken or inferior antennas.
I'm on Sprint. I've only made one phone call yesterday while standing outside, and I'm not sure how I sounded like to the other person, but on my end the call audio kept cutting in and out like I was in tunnel.
I'm hoping this is fixed with a software update, I might have to switch back to my Nexus 6.
A quick edit:
I just made another phone call and half of the call the person sounded like they was a robot under the water.
After spending tons on other flagships and sounding like i was on a paper cup this device is very clear
Telecomm strength is in average only ..
Sprint calls sound meh on this device... TMobile sounds better. Speakerphone on Sprint is horrible. Haven't tried speakerphone on TMobile
Call quality is great in both receiving and making calls here in Belgium (provider: Proximus). Downside: compared to my previous phone (iPhone 7 plus) the signal drops more often and reconnects slower...
Horrible with no service in weak service area. I am with T-mobile and there's no signal at home whereas i see 2 bars with my OnePlus and S8.
Had a 35 minute call today, switching between mic and speaker-phone. The person that called me said the call clarity was Crystal Clear! I am on Verizon with VOLTE activated.

Fine on Verizon.
Cell quality is not good with my PH-1

At the same place, my redmi is with 4 to 5 signal blocks.

Earpiece sounds really nice clear and loud when making a call with AT&T.
Signal strength is about the same as my other phones with same sim card in the same place.
I have a demo phone and this is with 7.1.1; upgraded to Oreo and speech to text stopped working. Went back to 7.1.1

Question Strong Vibration?

For years now, I've had phones where the vibration is so weak I cant feel it go off in my pocket. Just wondering how strong or weak the pixel 6 motor is? Anyone that wears loose fit jeans, can you feel the phone vibrate in your pocket?
I would not call it stronger than average.
My last phone was a OnePlus5T. I'd say the Pixel 6 has much stronger vibration than the 5T. But my understanding is that the 5T was rather weak

ugh. well that is disappointing. I was in the store testing out phones. The iPhone vibration is crazy strong. But all the android phones i tried seemed very weak.
I'm sure there are other apps but I'm using Buzzkill which lets you set rules for apps, custom patterns and increase/decrease the strength of the vibration. Not affiliated with the dev, just a fan of the app.
Came from an S10+, compared the vibration of the pixel 6 pro is average (slightly less powerful). Vibration became worse with the recent OTA update it seems 220305.013.
You could alternatively use a smart band/tracker though. Used the Mi band 6 as well as the galaxy active 4 for vibrating notification.
I think it is really weak. Kinda disappointed to be honest.
