I have CWM recovery on my Prime and I did a back up. That back up is on the virtual sd card, not the external card. I think this is erased when you do a full wipe. If I move it to the ext sd card will CWM read it if I do a restore? Is there another way to go about not having my backup erased?
Best to ask this in CWM or unlock thread in developement section. Will be answered faster. Just ask within the thread.

100% surefire way? move the backup to an external memory source (mircrosd), do the wipe, put backup back into internal memory, restore. this is what i would do, but i have been known to be paranoid
@demandarin: I would love to post this question there but I don't have 10 posts yet so it won't let me.
@stretch: Looks like that'll be what I end up doing.
Thanks y'all.

On my Nexus S a full wipe doesn't touch the /sdcard partition or whatever it it. That phone also doesn't have a physical sdcard slot but the internal portion is labeled /sdcard just like the prime. I would assume the same happens on the Prime but I haven't tried yet. That would be kind of annoying if your backups get stored on memory that is erased during a normal wipe.
Depends on what partition it stores it on. If you look at the Virtuous ROM section, it says that your data on the internal /sdcard is left alone even after wiping factory, cache, dalvik, and staging. I haven't unlocked my bootloader yet, but there is some information on that ROM forum. I'm waiting for more ROMs to shake out before I unlock mine. I only rooted it yesterday as the first step.

Either way having one on your internal, external, computer and ass doing back flips is always best

Hi
I've read alot of the threads around but cant seem to find specific info that I require. I've already rooted and flashed Litening ROM 1.5, however I want to try other ROMS and read its best to wipe before some of them.
Now most of the instructions say to boot into CWM and do a data/cache wipe, can anyone tell em what does this wipe exactly?
From what I can understand the 16gb is partitioned into the "sd card" and the storage? When looking through Windows Explorer only the larger (I believe sd card" partition shows up, with download folder, CWM back ups, music, camera images etc.
Does this get wiped, or is it just apps/personalisation of the phone? I've got titanium backup and backed up all data + user data etc which can be restored, but I just want to check that music/camera images etc won't go!
Hope its not too stupid a question, cheers for any info!
My understanding is: wipe = factory reset. I hope I'm right with that assumption.

Wipes....
I got caught once when I installed cognition for the first time. The installation somehow did wipe my internal sdcard with all my stuff on it. (Although I do have backups on my PC) So it was just a pain but not serious.
But the odd thing is that all the following upgrades of the rom did not wipe the sdcard, so DG might have change the way it does the wipes.
Also if you do a factory reset either via keypad on phone with the *#... it will wipe the sdcard.
So one needs to be carefull and make sure that we have backups of the stuff we want to keep.
I find this annoying making the 16GB card internal sdcard almost behaive as temporary storage ruther than permanent.
So watch out.
thanks for both replies! still not 100% sure though, does anyone know 100% what the CWM wipe options actually wipe?
thanks again!
How about "everything"? It sets your phone back to the way it was when you first started it.

.... is there an option to wipe or leave the internal SD card? Is it advisable to wipe it or leave it?
Coming from the original Incredible, the concept of internal SD is new... should I view this as just another SD storage that happens to be non-removable?
doing a factory wipe through amon ra should not touch the internal sd (per their thread in the dev section).
You can always wipe things separate: wipe data, wipe cache, davlik cache.
What is it wiping then? I assume the external card is always safe when talking about wiping in any rooting/flashing/recovery situation...?

Yes, when you wipe data/factory reset, everything is erased except for your external sdcard. The internal sdcard will be wiped of all data.
And if you're flashing a new ROM, you should wipe everything. Your ext sd card, the one you can actually take out, will not be touched unless you tell it to erase it or partition it.

Can I assume then that a Nand backup with defaults WILL backup the internal SD card as well? I notice that's where apps are moved to when I choose to move them to sd.
Here is info on backing up using Amon Ra. Sorry I don't have a link to the post, I copied this from my notes that I have compiled by copying and pasting from threads. It's in the Amon Ra thread in the dev section. Not sure it answers your question but hopefully it helps.
drellisdee:
Sd-ext (if apps2sd mod is used) backs up the mmcblk0p2 apps2sd partition
Android secure backs up the android_secure folder on the external sd
Android secure internal backs up the android_secure folder on the internal sd
I have yet to see any implementation of sd-ext on rezound so leave that one out. The android secure internal is there as some htc oem roms like on the droid incredible 1 have the android native app on sd on the internal memory. I'm not sure how its placed on the rezound but that option is there if needed.
So to answer the question for most people the most common needed items to backup would be:
Boot, data, system, android_secure.

Yes, if you do a Nand backup in AmonRa with the defaults that are selected, you will get your phone back as it was at that moment. All apps and data will come back as they were when you backed them up.

I asked that exact question in the amon ra thread and they said unless you tell amon ra to wipe the internal sd, a factory wipe only wipes data, cache, davlik cache.
I don't know why some people are having problems, but using htc dev unlock and amon ra, neither touched my internal sd memory.

I am using Amon Ra 3.12b , and have flashed back and forth about 3-4 roms and it never wipes my internal Sd card if I choose wipe data/factory reset. I have watched what it wipes and it wipes Data, Cache, android-secure but I saw a post where it might not be wiping android-secure.
There is a separate wipe you can choose to wipe for internal SD card , but it is not by default.
Hi xda,
I'm not a typical android user and this was one of my firsts in messing around with my Tab 10.1. I have GTP7500 which I recently loaded up with CM10 and it's working fine except for the camera. Leave that and what I was going to say is that I'd like to remove my entire Internal Storage ( all the downloads, music, videos ) and stuff, i.e, like formatting the sd card. I'd like to know a way to format the internal storage of my Tab without affecting the system files as I don't want to create any troubles here. So, my questions are:-
1. Whether I can delete all the stuff shown inside the internal storage from my PC directly and would it affect the system? I cannot see any format option when I connect my tab to my PC so, I was hoping if I could manually delete all the files inside the storage and then doing a factory reset from cwm and installing the rom once again?
2. Or is there any app to do this?
3. Or if it is quite simple to do it the hard way, well, entering the fastboot and wiping the whole system (Read it somewhere before) and installing all the stuff again, then please do tell me that too. Otherwise, I'd go with the easy method, i.e, just format the internal storage.
Also, what about the format /sdcard option in the mounts and storages menu in CWM? I'm using CWM 5.5.0.4.
I think doing the "format /sdcard" in CWM should do what you are looking for as I have done that in the past. I would also temporarily back up the /sdcard contents onto your computer as a precaution in case an app was depending on any folders there, but I think it should be fine.
Thanks but still...

Thanks for the quick reply. But would it remove other stuff including the boot files and other core files of Android? I've somewhere seen similar posts and whom did the format /sdcard but they proclaimed they lost whole files and had to do bootloader and install cwm and other stuff all over again to gain access. I've already managed to do format the sd card while installing the ICS official ROM for my tab but I did that via Samsung's recovery menu, i.e, one you get when installing their official ROMs and did a factory reset which erased all my internal storage files. But the same option won't remove internal storage in cwm. So, is format /sdcard the option to do this? I'd be glad to get a clear answer.

Yep, format sdcard in CWM. It will only wipe the data stored there. Your bootloaders and ROM will remain unaffected, however I would still backup the sdcard to your computer before doing this just in case.

The method above does work. However, if you really want to wipe the whole device completely clean, using Odin to flash stock firmware will blow it all out and make you factory-fresh in one operation.
Long story short bought a galaxy note off craigslist met up at best buy to swap phones check numbers and so on and reset phones
Went home wiped again rooted and flashed cm10 just noticed all his pics are still on here (some with sensitive info drivers license checks vin numbers).
Rather then call the guy and get him paranoid what would be the best way to wipe this completely clear

format of the SD card, and the internal EMMC partition...
Format the External card to FAT32 on your PC with the adapter....unless it's yours and you know it's clean....otherwise...scrub it..
Once the external is clean or replaced...(your call) then move any files you wish to keep from the internal card to the fresh external..
Then boot into your recovery, under advanced options, and format the EMMC partition..(note, not all recoveries will do this, but the latest CWM or TWRP will work)
Once the EMMC is clean, reboot the device, and the rom will populate only the files it needs to run, and all of his internal garbage will be gone..
(note: this will not remove app data stored within any apps, but the standard data wipe should handle that)
DISCLAIMER: this method "WILL" wipe all data from the internal space of the device.....proceed at your own risk....(low)
the rom will remain the same....So "SAVE" anything you want to keep before doing this..
After the EMMC format, you can move back anything you saved prior to wiping/formatting of the EMMC space....g

Can you not format the sd card and internal memory using a menu in the settings for CM10? I am not familiar with CM10 but there should be no need to use recovery to do this. The stock ToucWiz ROM can.

Actually CM10 was all buggy just went back to ICS not fimiliar with Touchwiz will try to look through the menus of touchwiz and see what i find
Go menu button/settings/storage. There you can format both. Simple as that.
I have been doing lots of ROM / Kernel experimentation on my VZW S4, and on attempting to take a backup of my most recent good configuration I received an error from TWRP that there is not enough space available because there is not enough space for my /Data partition which TWRP sees as 2438401MB or 2.4TB!
Since it is impossible that my on device /Data partition is 2.4TB, anyone have any suggestions on how to repair?
Or do I need to do a full install via Odin using the repartition option?
Thx.
Wow, it would be cool if you had 2tb, umm sounds like the recovery is corrupt, if it were me, I would try that first, if it does not work, do the odin flash to stock.
Good luck.
I reinstalled the TWRP recovery, and also reflashed a Verizon stock image file...but TWRP is still reporting my /data partition at 2.4TB.
I'm thinking I need to repartition, but have never done so on an Android device.
Recommendations?
I would try reading the odin features and what it does to re-partition. It has that option, but messing with the partition structure will cause a hard brick if not careful.
good luck.
Okay, I did an complete factory restore using the image from the following thread and now have a properly sized /data partition.

Can you tell TWRP to do its backups to the SD card rather than internal memory?
Thinking about getting an S4 but w/only 9GB free, would like to keep my backups on the SD card I'm going to get for it. I know I could move them there after creating them, but don't want to deal with having to move them back and forth if I need to restore one.

yes. thats what i do. However, I was using TWRP to backup my aokp rom that i set up and it wouldnt back it up and read the size would be 16gigs. However, my slim rom backup just fine without reporting a huge file size.
