I need confirmation before I spend time trying to exchange my phone that people have Notes that do not show major "black crush" on the photo below. I also included examples for those unfamiliar with the terms. I am prepared to have Best Buy open every single one in an attempt to find one without the issue, but the extremely low amount of people who state they are not experiencing the issue makes me wonder if maybe their eyes are not sensitive to it, or they are not testing in low light/dark room conditions.
I think they all have it. the skyrocket is the same way.
I notice this black crush only on netflix but then it is netflix. ..

Anything I play in native resolution is AMAZING. All these crappy streaming apps and tiny pictures shows some noise, but to me, that would be expected since these are not optimized for the size of our screen.
part of the problem is the rez as others in this thread have said. tablet apps would work better for this device because they are optimized for this res.
I'm looking at those pics on my work monitor and can see the blocks so I'm not sure how viewing on anything is going to look different..
If they are screenshots directly from your phone then its gonna look like that on any screen for us.

The first picture of black with clouds is a test image for you to see if it's occuring on your device. The second two images are examples of it occuring for people who are unfamiliar with black crush/clipping; so yes the second two images will look terrible on all screens. The first image looks normal/great on my infuse but on the Note has terrible black crush.

I am starting to think it is software. Just don't know why some people get great Netflix. Try this video on native u tube app then watch it using web browser. Look at the difference.

Has anyone (who has a participating cable provider) tried the WatchESPN app yet on the Atrix?
I've been trying to use it and so far the video is horrible on both wi-fi and over the air. The video displays colors overlaid on the feed and it is just awful.
Anyone have a similar experience?

I set this up yesterday, and really haven't messed with it too much. I did just try to watch some video over 3g/4g? and it took forever to load, and the video had a big green box when it first started, but then it corrected itself and the video was decent but it was slow to buffer and was choppy and not too enjoyable.
Haven't tried it yet..will install when I get done flashing my Atrix. Have god damn voice quality issues...so doing this one last time...
I had it on my iPhone 4 that I gave to my wife..it was WONDERFUL on there...looked like an HDTV...
i get the same issues as you, both on cell network and wifi. the bottom overlay in particular is always covered in green.
Glad to see it's not just me. I'm wondering if it's just an issue of the app not supporting our chipset yet.
Hopefully one of the updates will correct it eventually.
Yeah I installed it guys, horrible...believe me when I tell you its not even close to the experience on the iPhone...
If the damn iPhone had a replaceable battery I'd go back....
Hi, I am coming from a galaxy s 2 because the photon had an HDMI port on the side and the gs2 didnt have ICS so i was like I mind as well get the photon and wait for the next big thing. Now that I have it, this sucker is annoying when it comes to speed and the lag factor. When scrolling through a dark application, why does the pix fade away a little and then returns to normal look when you stop scrolling. I notice this mostly on black apps but mainly all over the device. Is there not a lag fix? or is this pentile display really that bad?
I would appreciate if someone could help me out
Update: Thanks all. I got rid of the photon and got the galaxy s 2 epic 4g tough back. Couldn't take it. Thanks again to all who replied.
I've never seen that, but I hate dark apps. Got an actual example?

Yes.. just uploaded this example
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kFazpLOmaA&feature=youtu.be
A prime example and the ability for others to repeat it would be helpful.
Just looked at your video it its a rendering issue. Going to try and replicate it.
Not sure but check your launcher and see if it has and rendering options.. From your video it almost looks like frame tearing.
---------- Post added at 05:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:09 PM ----------
Try shutting off auto brightness. I think that May help with some of your rendering.

Closest I can get is doing ##data# scrolling sideways.. I don't have any tearing but I do notice the text does dim a little when it is in motion but brightens back up once I stop..
Can't seem to fully replicate due to differences.. Post your phone info, ROM, launcher etc.
I am using 198_7 joker locked 4G ROM using the zeam launcher. I suppose more info about your phone would she's a little more light into diagnosing.

well the launcher may also be an issue but it's the stock launcher and stock rom..no root etc. The tearing as you say happening all over the device when scrolling... it also did this on the droid x 2.. i think it's motorola and them not focusing on the smoothness even though quadrant scores well. My stats are below for the phone
happens to me, I would think it has something to do with battery life. the more you refresh the screen.......weak, but makes sense!

There's definitely something weird there. That aint right.
One question is, your launcher has five icons but all the Photons I've seen have only four. Is that a setting somewhere that I've just never noticed or is that not stock?
Edit:
I see you're on 198_7. Can someone else on that build confirm this issue? It doesn't exist on 198_6. Maybe a bad flash or just not-quite-ready yet?
I have noticed this issue since day one but I think my eyes have just gotten used to it.
Ok, I made a thread about frame/graphics issues happen on 198_7. Since, I've switch back to stock 198_6 not one issue... I think I and you might just have gotten a bad download.....

I was playing with GoLauncher EX today and got that exact scrolling issue.
Hes on the ICS build I believe thats why his launcher looks different, If he's not on ics he's using ics launcher. I'm using twicca as well and I know what you're talking about but I dont notice it much anymore. It has something to do with the pentile display as you can see it handles brights very well but black isn't its strong point. The galaxy phones handle black's better than any phone their screens produce deep rich black colors. Perfect example is to watch a scary movie on both phones like paranormal activity and you'll see how the photon sucks for dark scenes because of how the pentile displays its blacks.

Fail lol. Enjoy your terrible reception and weak dev support.
I really want to use them because they are so cool, but I tried a lightning one and it just seemed to move a little laggy. Swiping, opening things, you could tell slightly it was a little slower. Not sure how drastic battery life is cut short though.
Anyone use them, or just use their own custom wallpapers? Or any other thoughts on Live Wallpapers in general?
I use them every now n then. I experience no lag at all with them on. it might just be that particular wallpaper not optimized for tablet or ICS. plus not too many out there that's HD. I rather use a highbdefinition wallpaper that showcases the Primes great display and colors. There are some really good live wallpapers out there though. They don't really drain the battery like people like to assume. Some are made better than others.
Some great ones are; Digital Hive(free), SunRise(free), Bubbles, Christmas HD, Season Zen(free), and Touch Ripples(free). Those all work n look great on the Prime with no lag. All this live wallpaper talk makes me wanna apply one now..lol
I've been using black hole that came with ICS. It works great. I use the ones that came with the system because their made for ICS. Doesnt effect the speed or scrolling.
I have been using the water/whale paper pre loaded. Works fine while indicating the battery level. Haven't noticed any lag or other issues.
.
I try them on occasion too, and then switch away when bored to something like Windows Vista Wallpapers (and Win7, the dramatic Landscape stuff) They are all out there, modified for the Primes resolution
I just tried Black hole because of the other post, and I like it much more than I thought I would. We will see, by end of day I will be looking for something else, LOL!
Anyone try the "semi-live" Asus "Day Scene"? Changes with time of day, so it's really just 4-5 static WP's. Nice, but the "dusk " one s horrible. Looks like someone peed on the landscape, LOL!
Installed the Skyrim live wallpaper, looks and feels pretty smooth.
Guess you have to like the game though.
Digital Hive is awesome...When you're not doing anything on the desktop, it's pretty passive, but during touch actions, it's cool as hell.

This would be amazing on our phones! I too am more excited about this mod than any other. I use my camera a lot!
If it corrects for the pops and squeaks during video recording, then that would be icing on the cake. True 30fps recording would great too. I've had pretty severe frame-rate drops during recording.
I went ahead and installed the program and it appears to work. I get larger JPG images and 1080 video at higher bitrates. A few things though. The icons at the bottom are physically lower on the screen so the text on the bottom gets cut off. The button to the gallery doesn't work from video mode but appears ok from camera mode. The effects appear to work too. This is just my preliminary findings.
I'm on CleanRom 4.1 without any of the mods.
Edit: xsnapshot, I haven't noticed the pops and squeaks since the radio update in January. I didn't notice any on the test video I took, but it was only for 10 secs so I'm not sure. I'll take a longer video later and see if I can hear the pops and squeaks.
Edit2: Not sure why you linked to an Engadget post when the original post is in XDA. Here it is so you can get the app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533238
I installed this yesterday and haven't had any issues with it. I have not used my Rezound camera enough to really notice a difference. I guess I should have taken a before and after pick to see if the file size changed much.
I didn't flash it. Opened the zip up and pushed each item to my phone.
I did take a picture of some clouds yesterday evening. File size was 2.62MB
Installed this tonight, my photo file sizes are huge now, though I've not seen a huge difference in 1080p video quality. I'll do some outdoor testing tomorrow, to see if there is a difference.
I'll try to post some results if I get around to it

if you reflash a rom without it, yeah lol...
this doesn't do anything for video, btw guys..in joels rom it didn't, anyway. still recorded at around 8mbps, wouldn't ever hit above that to get even near 20...photo's seemed to work uncompressed though; they're bigger in size
All I have heard about for years is iPhones blah blah blah. Well, as an avid enjoyer of this digital era we are in I decided to try out an iPhone 4s a few weeks ago.
I used a white 16gb and used it solely. Overall it is a nice phone. Wait? Huh? Yeah I said it. But there a re many reasons I just couldn't keep it...I'm android. I'm not an iPhone guy.
Pros.
Always good call quality
Speaker is loud and clear
Can send a full recorded video to any other iPhone and send any recorded video to another phone (although it compresses the hell out of it...it does send)
Camera, sharp fast clear.
Screen quality (yes its so small)
Battery life ( I could avg 5-6 hours usage time solely on 3g no wifi one days use)
Cons
Little bitty display
Could not Bluetooth pics to my wife's nexus.
No t9 dialer (but found an app)
No sextube app! Lol
0 3rd party apps (i know, common knowledge but crap)
Keyboard was...difficult. but I'm sure with tiny fingers manageable.
Not hardly any customization. Open it up from box. Turn on. Use it. Enjoy kind of feeling.
I updated it to ios6 and well...it looked almost identical to ios5. It just felt old and dated. Lost google maps too.
Basically I read a lot of people wanting to hang themselves with a charger at the thought of owning an iPhone. I tried it and while I don't want to chop my fingers off it wasn't a miserable experience. There were some perks I would like to see in android.
Being able to send any video and edit video on the fly was a plus.
Other than that I just missed every android phone I had used up until then. Some people love that phone and that's cool. I just wanted to share my take on it.
It's deffinantly technology and the os to me has, been, surpassed by jellybean. In all areas. So as far as don't knock it til you try it goes? I did. And coukdnt be happier selling that **** and getting back to my android powered devices.
I guess it's nice to see something objective and mature on the site.
Personally, the only thing that really, really, REALLY keeps me far away from any Apple device is the requirement that I use an iTunes account. I don't want to touch iTunes at all. You couldn't make me touch it with a ten foot pole.
You can edit videos just fine on Android, and as far as sending them, forget compression, upload it to dropbox and text the link to ur friends for download. This is way better because it'll be higher quality.
Or you could upload straight to YouTube, or Picasa, or send in an email, I'm not seeing the difficulty here.

That's why I am saying that I wish android could make a change and make it to where android could recognize another android device and send a full hd video you just recorded to another android device. Only thing I wish I had still. Why would you want to wait for a 30 sec hd video you upload, then send the link when you could have just sent it as an mms. That's a small gripe but an iPhone can send a full hd video to another iPhone without compressing it. It shows up crystal clear. Doesn't take a long time. Not arguing, I know there are other ways. I just prefer the simplest method.

I've been saying this for a while. Android needs an iMessage competitor because quite frankly, iMessage is genius. Android also needs better battery life and I was glad to hear that 4.2 or whatever will have improvements but I was sad to see nothing about a universal messaging app. There's 4 messaging apps for gods sake.

They need to make it better. It hasn't really changed it all and it could use some features like:
-integration into one app(sms/mms/gtalk/google+)
-integration of phone number so it'll know who your texting and make it free
-full Emoji support. (4.1 only has black and white android emojis)
-more
Gtalk is nice but, it lacks features.
