[Q] saving widgets when switching roms? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

so...now that we have an unlocked bootloader and development will start pouring in, i have a question for you all
i have hubs...i love my hubs
(adw ex)
but it takes a hell of a long time to install the hubs..if i flash a new rom, is there any way to restore those widgets?
i would have to install adw ex, i am assuming
can i just save the current settings and then reinstall adw after flashing rom and restore the settings in adw? will that bring everything to what it is now?
just want some info for anyone who has tried this already or knows..
thanks!

I have tried to backup the settings and what not but everytime I restore them the widgets always states.... problem loading widget, so I have to replace the widget back, a real pain but it has to be done when you flash alot of different roms as far as I can tell. I have tried doing it via titanium backup as well same result.

that's what i was scared of...back in my droid days, i got that "problem loading widget" when restoring settings with launcherpro plus...probably a common problem with all launchers..they just can't accurately save data/widgets in order to restore them...
hopefully something comes out that could support it
i am going to wait to flash any rom because of how long it takes...it really would have to blow me away with its' stats for it to be worth it..

I'm with you. I have 8 hubs and it took several hours to set this up once.
I remember spending hours on getting pages set up with heavy use of the Minimalistic Text widget on my Droid X2, being all proud about it, and then becoming a flash-addict only to find the dreaded "problem loading widget". Wish they could fix this soon but I'm sitting on the sideline for now as far as unlocking my bootloader anyway.
The question is, how long can I hold out? Getting my flash-fix through my X2 will only satisfy for so long...

i'm sure some people have figured it out...but i just wanted to give an update to my question...
nova launcher is almost perfect in restoring widgets..so as long as you use nova launcher between roms or doing whatever, it'll restore your widgets and settings almost perfectly...
saves a lot of time...especially on my flash happy galaxy nexus...but helps with the prime as well, so in case someone stumbles on this forum, hopefully that'll help them out...
you must use nova launcher first...save your settings, then when you do a clean wipe and flash a rom...install all your old apps via titanium or whatever, then restore settings back with nova and voila, all widgets and such will be restored..

Nandroid restore..

I installed this to get Live Wallpapers on my Eris. I decided I didn't care for it and used the nand backup I previously made to restore. I thought all was well until I cleared default on Sense again and saw the Nexus Launcher was still there, and it's still functional. Live Wallpapers is still an option as well, but all of them are gone except the two Cube wallpapers.
Am I missing something? I thought I just had to go into recovery and restore my Nand backup to go back to how my phone was before installing this new patch
I tried searching, but I'm not exactly sure what to search for.. if I missed it, please go easy on me..
Which rom are you running?
I ask because some roms have nexus launcher built in but not default.

I'm running 'Rooted 2.1 v0.8T2', found in this tutorial.
I can see the Nexus Launcher being default in some ROMs, but what about the Live Wallpapers?
Am I suppose to 'Wipe' before restoring a Nand backup?
edit: Did a wipe, and even wiped cache then restored my backup... they're still there.
edit2: I remembered that I installed the Nexus lock screen mod. Thinking that maybe the launcher came with it, I reverted to an older backup and NOPE! the damned Nexus launcher is still there, as are Live Wallpapers..
Okay, sorry for the double post but this deserves it.. I think.
I did a completely fresh install of the Rooted 2.1 v0.8T2 linked to above. I saw in recovery that it wiped data and cache before installing.
Upon first boot, I was presented with a pop-up asking me which home screen I'd like to use, and Nexus Launcher was an option!
This would lead one to believe that it was included in the ROM, except that my email and applications were all preserved and working and this, in fact, was not a fresh installation as it was intended to be.
Ugh..
edit: Widgets were out of place, as expected, but all applications and my mail accounts and emails are preserved.. how does this happen? I wiped manually, and I saw it wipe data and cache upon installation..
edit2: Okay! I was giving up, and decided to re-install that 'Rooted 2.1 v0.8T2' again, and this time it presented me with the setup upon first boot (last time, it just booted up like the phone had been restarted). All of my customizations and email accounts are gone, but Nexus Launcher and Live Wallpapers are still there lol.
Ivan mentions nothing about having Nexus Launcher and Live Wallpapers installed by default in this ROM, but he also says he didn't have time for a full walk-through.. so I'm going to assume it's in there by default at this point.
Yeah, the nexus launcher is included in that rom.
It really shouldn't be a problem..
you can dl Home Switcher in the market and it lets you switch back and forth through your home apps.

Haha, thanks That explains that away..
Now, about this recovery not doing it's job properly... oh well, nevermind, it eventually worked anyway.
Thanks for the input
Yeah, I have no idea about that, lol.
I didn't even know the nexus launcher was included until I started reading through the posts on Ivan's thread, because I never got a popup asking which one I'd like to use, lol. But Home Switcher showed me, cool little app. Hate the nexus launcher though, lags like crazzzy on my phone.

It seems to work well on mine until I open a couple of apps, then it freezes and won't even FC.. leaving me to soft reset with a battery pull.
I gave it a shot, but decided to stick with Sense for now

[Q] How to restore homescreen setup/layout?

Hi, I did a search but couldn't find any real answer other then "dont wipe data and homescreen should stay the same"
But when Flashing from ROM to ROM the Dev's require or recommend you to factory reset / wipe data. SO I want to know, what are some of you doing to restore your home screen layout? I know some of us spend quite sometime config. our homescreens and it sucks to re-do it. I use TB to back up my apps and data but have always practiced the "do not restore data from TB" as it has caused problems for me in the past, especially on my rooted xoom.
Thanks...
only restore green system data in titanium and you should be fine. theres a specific one that has homescreens. sometimes you cant though, if switching from froyo to gingerbread it wont work or vica versa. different versions of sense wont work either. a lot of times i found its easier to just take the five minutes and re set them up rather than deal with all the issues.
If you're using the same launcher on each ROM you can just backup that launcher's data and restore it to the new rom. If you have restored all the apps previously on your old homescreens, then everything will be as it was EXCEPT widgets. Widgets are the only thing that do not restore correctly. Just remove the broken ones and re-add them after restoring and you should be fine. I've done it this way for a long time and never had a problem. Having to manually fix the widgets is annoying but there's no way around that as far as I know and it doesn't really take that long (assuming you don't have a lot of them).
Thanks guys
Aight, thanks guys... I'll keep this tips in mind the next time.
Adw launcher lets you backup the layout and then restore it. I've found it to be hit our miss but its better than nothing.
Go Launcher can store setups, too. And check the widgets you use...some of them can store settings, and it might not be obvious. For example, SiMi clock, a very popular clock, allows you to do a ton of customizations with colors, etc. You can save your settings if you press menu while in the settings--took me a while to realize that. (I have gotten into the habit of pressing menu in the settings with various apps--not sure why they hide a settings menu within a settings menu, but they do.)

I actually find (personal experience) that ADW data backup/restore with TiBu does a better job than the one built into ADW. Same applies to other launchers as well since most include a backup/restore feature now. If it works better for you, glad to hear it. It just wasn't the case for me.

[Q] Android Hubs on your Prime

I thought I would start off with a more positive and a little constructive topic, Android Hubs!
So a couple of you have received your TF Primes and are probably on your way to customizing the thing, there are countless ways in which you can, but one of them is to use ADW Launcher Ex and the many extra pieces to go with it, listed in this thread (as you have probably seen already):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232357
I have tried to replicte the "screens switching" with shortcuts, but I found it a bit time consuming and I was not able to achieving the same or similar result.
I was wondering if it's possible to load presets of similar layouts of screen switching buttons on each screen or alternatively, a way to copy complete button layouts from one screen to another?
It would be nice to see some of your screenshots and ideas. Here are some of my stock screen pics and an attempt to recreate a hubs screen (yeah, I know it's bad):
I thought I would see some replies on this, surely some of you guys have done some customizing, lets see it
SPB Shell FTW!
And no, I don't have my Prime yet.
SPB Shell works pretty well on it, although I feel like it compresses the screen on the sides to create the carousel effect.
Is there any way to setup a HUBs type setup with Nova Launcher or Apex? I'm guessing not as there doesn't seem to be a 'Jump to page' shortcut, but other than that functionality what else are those launchers missing? I'm going to make a feature request if it's not already made for Nova to support this type of functionality so we can get hubs with that launcher.
I want to use Nova because the backup / restore Nova settings is the only launcher that I've found that almost always, perfectly, restores all settings -AND- widgets when you flash, titanium restore, and restore Nova Settings.

These were my thoughts exactly...plus I didn't want to by another launcher....but I did...LOL...And I am super happy about the results -- loving the way my prime looks....thing is I want to flash a few things and am not sure how it will all restore...or even if I decide I like a new ROM version/kernel after wiping, can I fully replace all of the theming without putting in all of the time....it was fun though.
Here is the thing about the prime -- it is constantly being dev'ed on and its not just the habit of wanting to flash a new looking rom, the stuff you devs are coming out with add real functionality and smooth operation...sooooo it's a give and take between esthetics and functionality...until someone develops an app that actually restores what you want and how you want it.
Is there not a way to pull this stuff from a nandroid?

[Q] how to backup Widgets (Desktop Visualiser)

Hello
I flash updates pretty often and If im lucky the widgets stays in place. However if I wanna flash a new rom, I am wondering how I can backup all the custom widgets I have made in Desktop Visualiser? I have googled to no avail on this.
If I cant save the widget layout (this seems to be launcher repsonsibilty) thats fine, at least can i backup all the custom widgets i have made with DVR.
Cheers

I suppose it cant be done. I figured.
Damn. Spent about 2 hours yesterday customizing different icons to different apps and tasks. A TEEEDIOUS work indeed.
Would be nice to be able to save them for future use.
Anyone got any nice ideas how to figure this out? I mean they are there, on my homescreens, so they do exist.. just gotta find them and copy them

[Q] Restoring widgets

I checked the title suggestions and the S3 doesn't have a solution in them... The suggestions for other phones don't seem very good either, although I will take a look at LauncherPro.
Question:
Is there a way to restore widgets to their correct screens and locations? I like trying ROMs and I've got saving/restoring my data and apps down so I don't lose anything but widgets are a pain. I get the big red rectangles but not the widgets. Have no problems paying for an app that does it, so I'm not just looking for a freebie handout.
Ideally the app would also restore apps and data into a new ROM, but I'd be happy if it just looked after my widgets. I run 7 home screens and have my Launcher at 6 columns x 7 rows - I don't mind having to set that up prior to restore but again, ideally it would be nice if the app would restore those settings.
*grins* Not asking much... am I?

From my experience, which is limited to Apex Pro, I can tell you that restoring the home screens work for logos & folders of apps, whereas somehow my widgets (I got 1 widget, which is the calendar in agenda view) does not work somehow. Maybe other launchers can do it though.
Thanks chrismast - it seems to be an issue. I can't find anything on Playstore that specifically says it will restore widgets, even if you're on a stock layout. Maybe it is too hard given all the changes and layouts people have on their devices? le sigh...
Its very rare to restore Widgets as they were.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
@rootSU - do you mean it is rare that people put widgets back as they were or that it is rare to be able to restore them as they were? The 2nd one, yep! Having all kinds of problems trying to find a way to do it automatically. The 1st possibility - I like to try different ROMs and see what they are like to use - to do that I really need to have the same set up in each so I can compare. Restoring widgets to what they were before an upgrade seems a logical thing to do, so I am puzzled it hasn't been addressed before now.
Maybe I am just a bit odd?

Yes the latter. I ONCE managed to restore fully using titanium backup. I suppose it depends on the type of widgets. Go launcher and Nova have internal backup features, but all it does is put the widgets in their places. I still have to "tap to restore widget" which for some is great, they just pop back up but others that are configurable, i still have to go through all the config again.
nova launcher prime does a superb job of this

Not for me. Once I restore widgets like:
Tasker tasks
Set CPU
Beautiful Widgets
Pure Calendar
Simi Clock
I have to go into each and set my preferred settings.
