I would think the one that doesn't increase your counter? Da_G's root method increases counter.
There are 3 ways
System root
Rom root
Kernel root
I belive the system root is is the only one that doesn't increase your counter so the only way undetected by AT&T or Samsung for any warranty work.
Is there a way to erase the counter?
Not at this time
So have the majority used the system root?

The system one I used
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1505062
doesnt add to the counter and doesnt affect the stock rom, just gives root. Great so far

Ok I'll give you the short short version:
If you need the samsung drivers so your pc recognizes your note, download them here:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I717ZBAATT
If you need odin, download it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=581913&d=1304094576
Download this and when finished unzip it and will become a tar file. If this doesnt work find another host link in the system thread I posted earlier.
ftp://www.slimeinside.me/Samsung/AT&T Galaxy Note/Root/att_note_root.zip
1. Put your device in download mode by powering off, after its off hold the volume down botton and power on and hold at the same time until the download screen comes up and then volume up.
2. Connect your note via usb.
3. Run odin
4. Click the PDA button and locate your tar file.
5. Click start and let the magic happen, it should reboot once finished.

I did it this way to a T and it worked perfect. Only took like 20 seconds and then rebooted. Fastest root process I've seen AND it changes the boot animation which is bad ass cuz I hate the att one. Another thing that was different is that it asked me to dl super user. Other methods just automatically install it during the root process. Nice work. Thanks.

I am not the dev to get this done.
hell i am not even a dev. i never could get it running on Ubuntu to start learning out to create stuff.
so.. here is a starting point for those who want to get CWM running.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are a 100 different methods of flashing a device with CWM, and being that this is a new device it will take some time and a good dev to get it going.
but since this is a samsung device and the groundwork on the SG I and SGII has already been laid, i think roms and CWM are only a short time away.
I imagine the SG II CWM methods would be our best starting point.
i figured i would start a thread for anyone who wants to post their progress in getting CWM flashed.
if you have any testing methods please post them.
need someone to test. just ask.. but please have a viable recovery method available to that user incase it bricks the player.
Needed
- Stock flashable Recovery
- Stock flashable Rom (incase the entire phone goes belly up)
i guess since there is no true recovery rom for the Player 5 we need a full Rom w/ recovery to reflash, or the stock recovery to reflash the device incase the device gets bricked when attempting to get a working CWM.
Known Recovery Methods
How to enter Samsung Stock Recovery mode
-Hold Home, Vol +, and Power all at the same time.
-When the Samsung logo appears let go of Power.
-Use Vol + and - for moving up and down the menu
-Hit the Home button to enter on an item. (or click ok)
How to enter Download Mode (for flashing odin files)
-Hold Home, Vol - and Power at the same time.
-When samsung Logo appears let go of Power
-to exit download mode hold Power until it powers off. (its about 5 seconds)
ADB Methods
(performed via CLI using adb while your phone is running and hooked to a PC)
Reboot - adb reboot
Reboot into Recovery (stock or soon CWM) - adb reboot recovery
Reboot into download mode (for odin flashing) - adb reboot download
Odin Flashing Tool (used when your phone is in download mode)
Here is a link to Odin 1.3
I use 1.3 because its probably the most widely used.
there is a 1.8x but i dont know of a change log to show a reason why we should use it.
short on time, will clean it up and add more soon.
Got it!!!

haha gotta love modders !
but thats not something for most people. thats a rare little device that only certain people can even make.
(i could probably make them by the dozens if someone where to pay.
but if you are not stuck in a bootloop or unbootable state as the jig is used for
never forget too that there is always adb
adb reboot
adb reboot recovery
adb reboot download
Well adb dont work on soft brick.
I made two of them. Saved my but a few times.
They sell em 10 bucks a pop
But at any rate.
Its better to have a jig and not need it than to need a jig and not have it.

OR... you can simply purchase three(3) 100Kohm resistors from radio shack, twist them together, and fish around in the USB port until you hit pins 4 and 5 (on the top and bottom on the same side of the usb port)... It's really that simple. Tape them up so you dont make contact with your skin and throw off the ohm reading.

I'm working on this.. This is all that's left
2: use market app Terminal Emulator and run the following commands on the device
Code:
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p16 of=/mnt/sdcard/data.rfs
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15 of=/mnt/sdcard/cache.rfs
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p10 of=/mnt/sdcard/efs.rfs
Another native method for those of you with Mac or Linux... With windows you use putty. Get market app SSHDroid then SSH in to your device and copy-paste the code block in.
3: copy the files "data.rfs", "cache.rfs" and "efs.rfs" from your SDCard. put them onto your computer and compress them to save space. They will compress down quite a bit.
4. host them somewhere they can be deleted... a personal mediafire account or PM me for access to my server.
I can make an Odin3 1-Click back-to-stock from there.
nvm
10 character
I got a flashable md5 file for odin if anyone is still needing it. Go to my thread.
NOOBS GUIDE on how to update your AT&T Galaxy Note to the latest ICS leak and optional obtain root and CWM recovery again:
This guide will walk you through the steps to successfully update your AT&T Note to the latest ICS leak.

If you're going to write a guide for n00b's, it's best not to leave out links or expect people to always know what you are referring to. For example, you tell them to download the correct USB files, but don't provide a link (however, this link is provided in the next link). Also, you state "Download the one click Odin file," but the link you provide says nothing about a one-click Odin file. I know what you mean, but you can't expect every "n00b" to understand. Anyway, just some advice to make your guide better and more idiot-proof.

Got a NIB International one X 32GB
sent from my HTC One X
SO i found out how to manually get into Stock recovery on the t mobile version of the galaxy note.
1) While the phone is on just hold down Volume Down + power button for 10-12 second
2) When you feel a light vibration release the power button while still holding down button, and then just hold volume up button as well
( both volume up and down at same time) hold until it show manual mode.
once her it give me the same stock recovery options.
apply update through external sd
apply update through cache
and some other options i don't remember
" what i did"
i tried to flash Superuser binaries by pressing apply update through external sd. It seemed like it was about to go through then it said error invalid signature. When i tried to reboot the screen went completely black and my heart stopped. SOOOOOOO i waited a minute and then just held the power button and it booted up again "PHEWWWWWW"
Just wanted to share my experience as it seems there are alot of people trying to find more info.
Maybe this will help someone get closer to cracking the puzzle
I should be sleeping, since I need to be up in 4 hours for work, but I can't sleep because it's too friggin hot.
Did you have it connected to a comp when you tried this? It should force it into download mode then instead of going to recovery. Theoretically, then it would be a matter of using Odin to push custom recovery and SU.
Unfortunately, it's too damn hot to even fire up my computer, or I would be working on this right now. Well, if nobody has managed to get it by morning, I'll try to work on it while at work.

Get into recovery and flash this file in recovery, i got it from roto, here is his post on how to do it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30081450&postcount=34
comfirmed root!
i can confirm that if you have nandroided rotohammers tmobile dump then all you have to do is download the root superuser file and put it somewhere in your sdcard and manually go back to cwm (powering off device and pressing power vol up and vol down once you feel the phone vibrate let go of the power button but keep holding vol up and vol down until you see the cwm screen) then find the file you downloaded earlier flash and once done reboot the phone. "walla" your rooted on att galaxy note with a full Tmobile stock rom.
I can confirm that the TMo Note is easily rooted, almost the exact same way as the ATT version.
These steps all assume you have rooted before and have ODIN installed on your computer. If you have never rooted and don't know what ODIN is, you will need to read up on both before attempting anything or risk bricking your phone. I, or any other member of XDA, am not responsible if you brick your device. Attempt at your own risk.
Step 1: Download Clockwork Recovery tar file found here, select ODIN at top of post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431
Step 2: Download SU binaries (attached in this post)
Step 3: Open ODIN
Step 4: Connect usb to phone and computer
Step 5: Boot phone into download mode by pressing VOL DOWN+ POWER until phone goes blank and phone vibrates, then release POWER and hold VOL DOWN + VOL UP at same time. Once in download mode, select UP.
Step 6: In ODIN, select PDA and locate the recovery file. Then select Start.
When finished, close ODIN and copy the SU binary zip to the root directory of your internal phone storage.
Reboot into recovery by disconnecting phone from USB and following Step 5 above.
Install SU zip through CWR, you are now rooted. Reboot and update SU binary from app.
I know this can all be found elsewhere, I just wanted to place it in this thread for convenience

The at&t phone is put into recovery with the volume and power buttons, but the t-mobile phone needs the usb cable plugged in also to enter recovery.

No, you still need ODIN to install recovery for the rooting process. For that, you have to be in download mode on the phone, not recovery, and you can only get to download mode with the USB cable attached. I think my instructions in my earlier post may have confused some people. I'll have to clean it up later.

I've flashed CM9 & CM10 ROMS and none work. So hang tight on the stock ROM right now. Freeze all the crap with Titanium Backup. Its working well for me so far.
OK, Now that I got rooted, and got wifi tethering working....next step is to wait for a dev to make a rom for t-mobile.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Download this for safekeeping for later if you need it & compare md5 checksum. Download a custom recovery, I recommend getting Amon RA 3.16, although TWRP 2.4.1.0 has been rock solid for me. Download SuperSU v1.10 flashable as well link
1. Run an android backup also backup contents of your internal storage.
2. Unlock bootloader
3. Confirm boot of the device and sync your Google account
4. Flash custom recovery through PH98IMG method or using fastboot "fastboot flash recovery **name-of-img**.img".
5. Flash the SuperSU update.
6. Confirm boot again. Once booted install this from Play Store.
7. In the Busybox app. checkmark replace all then press install>smart install. Then reboot.
8 (optional) Restore data from your adb backup (See step 1).
9. You are now rooted on the stock rom
I want to thank you so much for your response. I am extremely new to the terms you've mentioned such as fast boot etc. is there any way you can post a more broken down step by step or if you knew of a link on here that has steps for noobs ? Thanks !!

Have you looked at? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504824
To get things started. To unlocked your phone. You must go here: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader
That link is a great step by step way of showing you what to do to get it unlocked. After that come back and we can help you more with flashing a new recovery and getting your first ROM on your phone.
Is the all in one tool kit for unlocking the bootloader and rooting the phone and if so is this all that needs to be done? :
Download the toolkit DO NOT RENAME THE FOLDER
2. Download Winrar from here. Install it after you download it
3. Extract the folder anywhere.
4. Run the program
I really appreciate all your help. I will get started on unlocking the bootloader via your second link. Btw does it have to be done via phones Web browser or via usb cable from phone to pc?

Allow it to install the prerequisite software (these contain the needed drivers), but do not allow HTC sync to install or install it fully but disable HTC sync while you're working on this.
Thanks for your response ! What did you mean disable HTC sync? Is that the option I see on my phone when I plug it in? Leave it unchecked or did you mean something else ?

Have to get root first. "Walk first before you can run"
I'm so lost I thought I had to unlock my bootloader first per post #4 but I needed to make sure I had HTC drivers on my pc.

Aren't these the drivers he needs?

Also found this step by step by asking my friend Google..

P.S. Could a mod remove the 5 min wait restriction between posting on my account? I've been a member for over a year and only have a dozen posts. No fear of spamming from me...

I think these are the one I used when I first rooted my HTC G2. And they've been on my computer ever since, so I had no trouble with my Rez.
---------- Post added at 04:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:14 PM ----------
Actually, the All-In-One kit by Hasoon will install the drivers for you. Just run the Rezound.exe and on the left on the to-do list just click on #1 to install the drivers and click the "GO" button.
I'm trying to understand hasoons all in one toolkit. Does it root and unlock the bootloader or just root the device ? Under features in his thread does that list what the toolkit does for you or steps one has to take to unlock the bootloader ? Thanks !
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
I felt the need to create a thread explaining things a bit better. Lets get started shall we!!
1) As most folks know the I605 Galaxy Note 2 shipped with a locked bootloader. This means you Can Not flash any custom roms/kernels/ or recoveries until you unlock the bootloader!! Failure to comply will result in a yellow triangle stating "unsupported software detected"!
2) If you flashed custom software on your device without unlocking, please refer to Section 1B of my GUIDE in development section. This will bring your device back up and running in stock condition!!
3) Now you can proceed to Adams latest "Jailbreak" thread for for rooting/unlocking/flashing a custom recovery. Make sure to only use the method that applies to the firmware/bootloader version that was previously on your device.
VRAMC3 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066
VRALL4 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348
VRALJB- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636 (Unless you purchased this device within the first month of release, and never accepted a OTA, Do Not use this link).
4) And last of all, folks never accept any OTA's!! There is no reason to!! Now that your device has been rooted, unlocked, and running twrp recovery, you can now download any latest update.zip from the dev section and flash in recovery. The Devs here are always fast at packaging up the OTA into a zip format so we can update via cwm or twrp recovery. There are a couple reasons why I prefer this method,
1. Future OTA updates may relock the device permanently! There is no gurantee a unlock method will be achieved for the next OTA.
2. .Zip roms are normally smaller, so they take less time to download and imo are easier to install.
3. OTA's can sometimes fail and soft brick the device.
So please read through this thread thoroughly and remember research twice, flash once! Hopefully this helps...:good:
**Also Note the VRUEMJ9 4.3 OTA update locked the bootloader and there is no current unlock method**

Error while using Casual R311b
Noob here. Just got my Note II, on VRALL4
I am trying to unlock using the Adam's instructions to the letter (and viewing the instructional video), but I keep getting
ERROR: Protocol initialisation failed!Your device should be rebooting into Android now.
The phone stays in download mode and never reboots back into Android. I've tried different USB ports, installed the drivers from Samsung Kies (I uninstalled the Kies software after getting the drivers). Tried searching through the instructional thread, but couldn't find any concrete answers. Not sure what to try next.

I haven't followed the new instructions yet, but have you tried manually turning your phone back on to see if it will just pick back up in the process?

The only way to get my phone to boot back into Android is to disconnect the USB cable, pull the battery, and boot it. After removing the USB cable, Casual still shows "DEVICE CONNECTED".

No, I don't believe this newest Casual uses Odin. It's just a(n almost) one-click solution. No checkboxes (see initial post in this thread for a link to the thread containing the new Casual).
Is there another way to root/unlock VRALL4? I'd be happy to try out more complex methods, as this doesn't seem to be working.

stuck on yellow triangle stating firmware problems
Hi all..i recently tried to unlock the bootloader however did not know the file i used was not compatible with the latest OTA. When using ODin the phone fails at the sboot.bin...now i can still get into the ODin menu but thats it. Ive been reading several threads and the only solution Ive seen was that the device would get its data wiped. However I have many sentimental things on the device, would there be a way for me to recover all that data. I thought I had backed all files onto my sd card but not all the files got transferred. Any help or tips would be appreciated thank you
try using root66 from section 1a of my guide it does not wipe data.
