[Q]What is wrong with my phone?! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So long story short:
Had android 2.3.4 (custom kernel rom etc) and wanted to update it to something newer (WHY DID I DO THAT WHYYYYYY) so as almost 90% of the people out there "yeah i know stuffs 'bout computers... so a phone won't be a problem... don't make me laugh" WAS I WRONG. So i found a how to step by step theandroidsoul com/android-4-0-ics-ice-cream-sandwich-update-for-galaxy-s-2-ii
Transfer the Android 4.0 file you downloaded in step 1 above to phone’s internal sdcard. Just remember the location where you transfer it — you’ll need it in step 8 and step 10 below.
So i did... AFTER i unzipped it... didn't know. After that came:
Wipe system, data and Cache.
In recovery, go to “mounts and storage”.
To wipe system, select “format /system”. Choose “Yes – Format” on the next screen.
To wipe data, select “format /data”. Choose “Yes – Format” on the next screen.
To wipe cache, select “format /cache”. Choose “Yes – Format” on the next screen.
AND **** HIT THE FAN
Since the file is unzipped the Clockwork Recovery(v 4.0.1.4) can't find it only its folders... so i was stuck. The phone didn't load, it sits on the logo with the (!) in a yellow triangle. When i try to flash it with odin (tried with 1.83 and 1.85) even with "pit" i get stuck at

Are you sure you are in download mode, try diffrent usb cables, kill all kies processes with task manager, try to reinstall kies and then try again, also try heimdall, if you don't have mac and nothing else has worked, you could set up virtual mac and then use heimdall. Hope this helps
Edit: I'm not sure if I understanded right, but did you managr to get to cwm after you wiped and rebooted?

I had the Same Problem, but i was able to load a nandroid Backup. Ti starts to woork again, but with usb error like yours.
Then i tryed mobile odin. I flashed back the original Rom from 3 italy.
doing this my phone Blocks completely. Nothing woeks, nor recovery nor normal boot nor download. My luck. i had to send IT to Service to fix IT. They fixed it for free in guaranty.

Well i'll try to fix it during the weekend and if nothing happens... i'll try that

Try re-downloading your ROM you want to flash, to your computer. Then load Odin, follow the steps. Only to get your phone into download mode press and hold volume down, home and power on all at the same time. Keep holding them until the screen comes on and the phone will go into download mode. Then connect it to your PC. Wait until the PC recognises your phone and you have a yellow box with com highlighted in Odin. Then flash your ROM. Make sure you do exactly like the guide. Your phone should be ok.
Good luck!

Jesus... F... Christ... i'm probably one of those STUPID customers that we see in the "ffffuuu and rage comics"... Download mode is VOLUME DOWN, Home and Power... i was pushing Volume UP, Home and power thus putting the phone in recovery... oh my God... Put my name on the wall of shame

Yes that's right volume down! Once it is in download mode you should be able to flash as normal

Need Help With ODIN and Soft-bricked Vibrant

Just a bit stuck here. I've attempted following several guides here to fix my soft-bricked Vibrant. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728698
Both JE8 and JFD were attempted but failed in my most recent attempts. I honestly couldn't tell you what my phone is running now since I don't remember what successfully installed, but I think it was originally JE8. Clockworkmod Recovery was installed at the time, so Vol+/- and Power do not get me into Download mode, but Vol- and Power does. May or may not be noteworthy, but I see KeyPressed, 164 at the very top of the screen. Vol+ gets me into "POWER RESET or UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE", with the following at the top:
RST_STAT = 0x1
PWIC_IRQ1 = 0x0
PWIC_IRQ2 = 0x0
PWIC_IRQ3 = 0x0
PWIC_IRQ4 = 0x0
PWIC_STATUS1 = 0x00
PWIC_STATUS2 = 0x0
When I get into Download mode and start ODIN with either method linked above, I get:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> Can't open the serial(COM) port.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
Attempting ODIN in the other mode just hangs at File analysis. I've tried various USB ports and uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers.
Any ideas? Thanks for your time.
Hm~ I may just try to get it swapped out. I've noticed in other videos and screens in Download mode do not have "KeyPressed 164" at the top. I also think this error's come up on the i19000. And considering how I have to boot into Download, this phone may indeed be more than soft-bricked.
And to think, this all started with random force closes with Phone, Maps, and one other app, plus "missing android ID" in online games. Or maybe this really started when I selected Fix Permissions in Clockwork to try and correct the force closes~
i pretty much get the same screen. if i just remove battery and plug phone via usb i get the android recovery screen. but if i press the volume buttons with the power button i get the "power reset" or "unknown upload mode." My phone does get recognized by odin everytime but it just hangs on "file analysis" for a while. what do i do?
Pre-load the files that you want to flash in Odin before plugging in your phone USB.
Once its detected by Odin, a COMM will appear under a box and then hit start.
Make sure you INSTALL the drivers from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929 This is a driver that is known to WORK. If you downloaded from anywhere else and are experiencing problems, I'd recommend uninstalling and installing the one I just linked.
The problem with "POWER RESET or UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE" was solved
you should try this:
1. shutdown phone and unplug all cabels
2. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time
3. After it phone-!-pc appeard, just wait until screen goes black
4. when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
5. You will get download mode!
when i tery this method, my phone just reboots or boots up to galaxy s screen and gets stuck. then my scren goes black but buttons remain lit. i can get the power reset, unknown upload message but cannnot get the phone to pc screen. how can i get into download mode?

Remove battery sd sim.
put battery back in
hold the volume button
plug in the usb (dont have to press power)
Your Odin log said Odin did not detected a device. Do you see COM and a number appear on the upper left of ODIN when you plug in the device?
I know some ODIN image failed on my phone, the one that worked for me was JFD. Did you also tried using the combination of JFD.tar and PIT file from here to repartition the phone? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028

I've never seen this before at all. Try heimdall and see if you can get anywhere. This really is a big ?????
Because I am hard, you will not like me. But the more you hate me, the more you will learn.
I'll give heimdall a shot tomorrow, because currently, Odin isn't even detecting my phone... And I know that drivers cannot be the issue. Thanks for the suggestion though.
UPDATE: Resolved the issue. For future reference, if you find your device is having the "POWER REST OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE" error, don't fret. Here is an informal discussion that you may find rather beneficial... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580902&page=28.

[Q] I really did a number on my Vibrant :(

Ok so im total noob but i need help! I rooted my Vib then tried installing a new rom... i didnt delete anything like i was supposed to so when the rom was finished my vibrant re booted and was way discolored it finally booted but then kept re booting constantly. I then went into download mode and tried flashing back to original with various tar files using odin... Now i cannot get into download mode ive tried every way. when i power the vibrant on now it says: Galaxy S gtI9000... which probably isnt good... considering its the vibrant.. it then boots into recovery mode and none of the options work and down is now up and up is down on my volume to select choices. this is what it says:

What bootloader are you using? the froyo one or gingerbread?
i was originally 2.2 froyo if that is what you mean
I'm just curious what you were flashing, in terms of whether you were going to Gingerbread ROM or sticking with a Froyo rom. Sounds similar to a time where I messed up flashing my phone in odin, and since it was a gingerbread bootloader, I forgot that download mode had changed. If you are the same case as I was, then download mode is up volume and power. If its another thing, I probably won't be the best, but I'm sure someone around here will know what to do.
I believe it was Darkys_v10.1_Extreme_Edition rom... When i hold volume up and power then put my usb in it says: POWER RESET or UPLOAD MODE. I just now tried opening odin a com was recognized i opened a pit and a pda and it sayed:
<ID:0/011> Added!!
<ID:0/011> Odin v.3 engine (ID:11)..
<ID:0/011> File analysis..
<ID:0/011> SetupConnection..
and nothing happens lol... thx for the quick responces btw
What I did way before I started flashing roms, is I purchased a download mode jig I never had to use it but I have it just in case.
Try pulling the battery.
Then open odin on the computer. While holding the lower volume button down, plug the phone to the computer.
Odin should recognize the phone and just go back to stock from here. Make sure you read up on going back to stock first. You should check this thread out. It has alot of useful info.

You need to get back into download mode and flash back to stock. Make sure you download what ever rom you are trying to use from another source. Some of the files could be corrupt. Also make sure you do your research!!! READ READ and if you think u know it all... READ some more!
It doesn't hurt to ask people questions on these forums but you have to know what files you have and what you want your phone to be 2.2/2.3/2.3.4 based rom, Start slow go from stock 2.1 to 2.2 then try the CyanogenMod. TAKE your time! You'll be fine GL
I cannot get into download mode. I just bought a jig hopefully that works
Hope it works as well. I've seen phones in this case require JTAG so if you need that let me know. I have an order from a Mike G from last night so maybe that's you. If so, it will go out Monday...
yeah thats me
That happened to me once to, all I did was Google how to get into dowload mode the i9000 way, try it while your jig is still on it's way

WOW!!!!! This just worked.... I downloaded a reg edit.... YAY!!!!!!
sigh!!!!! i had it working perfectly (almost) apart from being in i9000 format.... i downloaded rom manager from the market installed selected reboot into recovery and now im BACK stuck in recovery and cant get kies mini to read the phone... so i uninstalled kies mini and still nothing after reinstalling it.. keep in mind in recovery mode volume up is volume down... i can toggle between options but power does nothing unless i hold it.. then it just restarts into recovery
im going to try installing kies mini for captivate :O
no luck back to waiting for the jig
Jig came today!!!!!!!! Worked like a charm... Best 8 bucks i have ever spent. Thanks guy from mobiletechvideos.com, your the man!!!!

Has my unrooted Samsung S III bricked itself overnight?

I turned over this morning in bed to find my S3 had failed an uncalled encryption process (one benefit of all this is that I had an excellent night's sleep as my alarm did not go off (that said I got to work 2 hours late)).
The error message:
"Encryption failed
Unable to complete encryption due to interruption. Perform factory data reset before use. After resetting, try encrypting device again."
If I hit 'reset device' it either gets stuck on boot screens or, if I then take the battery out and restart, it eventually shows this error message again. Once but only once I got a linux looking menu offering options to reboot, reset the phone, attempt recovery etc. I chose to reboot as I thought this might get out of this data encryption failing lock. Unfortunatley after that it went back to booting to this error screen.
Note: I have never tried to root this phone and have not done any non-standard actions to it at any point, it runs the stock Samsung system, updated to Jelly Bean a little while ago.
Breaking my rule of avoiding rooting/roms (for warranty / insurance's sake (I used to root my old android phones, just not this Samsung S3)) I followed an article on CNET called "How to recover a bricked Samsung Galaxy S3" (can't link to it in this post) to try and restore the standard Samsung Rom, it did not work. I also tried rooting it. Both times I got this error as the process failed mid way:
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/004> Initialzation..
<ID:0/004> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/004> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/004> recovery.img
<ID:0/004> NAND Write Start!!
<ID:0/004> cache.img
<ID:0/004> FAIL!
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
I have since tried:
- different versions of Odin (3.07, 1.87, 1.85),
- standard samsung one: KIES_HOME_I9300XXEMC2_I9300OXAEMC2_1042335_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5
- two root files: CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.tar.md5 and CF-Root-SGS3-v6.3.tar
All fail, either not working at all or getting the above messages.
So
1) What would have caused the encryption process to start and then fail
2) Can I fix this? Why is the rooting or restoring standard samsung rom failing?
3) If not, willl Vodafone/ Samsung fix this under warranty (bearing in mind I did not root this phone originally, nor has it been rooted (trying to root it fails!) (I also have insurance but figure they won't cover this.
Thank you!

Aha, so that is the screen I saw this morning once when it rebooted randomly.
I've just tried it multiple times (watched various youtube videos of how too) - the samsung logo comes up, then screen goes black, then samsung logo again - in loop. That's if I hold buttons down for a while, constantly or release after a few seconds.
Thanks
Tom
Hey
So if you can access recovery mode (vol up+home+power) till it boots and then release all the buttons when it starts booting..
Use vol keys to move selection up and down..and use power button to select..
Move to "wipe data/factory reset" and use power button to select..
After it completes chose reboot system now..
This should probably solve your issue..

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I cannot access the recovery mode (I did once when the issue first started occuring, this appeared to have been pot luck, now I cannot access it). If I do it now it just cycles between showing the boot logo and a black screen, whether I hold the buttons or press them for a short amount of time (I know I'm doing it right).
Is there a way of remotely triggering it or similar?

Pass. Probably not - I can't remember ever doing it on my S3 (have done it on previous androids).
I've only every connected via USB for accessing the SD.
This is annoying as it's obviously not totally bricked - when the Enryption failure messages come up I can adjust volume (i.e. it shows the volume slider etc), a sound happens when I click the 'reset' button. This said I can't launch recovery mode.
Thank you for all your help!
P.S. I have tried from 2 other PCs now and another KIES stock Samsung Rom - all failed too.
Hey
That probably means that USB Debugging is off on your phone..else Odin3 would have picked it up..
I guess only a pro or samsung can help you now..

I just wanted to chime-in and say that my SGS3 did exactly the same thing last night. I woke up this morning (amazingly, before my alarm would have gone off), to find it sitting at the same error message after attempting to encrypt itself. Since then, after doing the reset, the phone has been unstable, with frequent lockups. No idea what's happened.

newbie needs help

hi peeps
1st time ever handling a andriod device. given a galaxy s3 that was just flashing the splash screen in a loop.
history is that phone was downloading an app, but fiald and crashed the phone. the battery was pulled out and thats when the flashing samsung splash screen loop started.
did a little research and downloaded both odin3 and kies. tried flashing with odin3 but keeped getting a failed message.
tired kies firmware upgrade and initialization option, add the model number and s/n as required. but process goes so far and says "THIS DEVICE VERSION CAN NOT BE UPDATED"
as stated, new to the andriod scene, so all hell very much appreciated.

He meant recovery mode on the phone,
1. Remove the battery and leave the phone for a couple of minutes to fully discharge then put it back in
2. Hold Volume Up + Home + Power together until the phone boots up then release the buttons and it will go into recovery
3. Use the volume button to move up and down the list of option
4. Find Factory Reset, highlight it then press the power button to start the process
The phone will hopefully reboot properly after this but it will have wiped the data as that is what factory reset does.

Can you enter "Download" mode?
- Hold Vol Down + Home button and keep holding it
- Press and hold power button (all 3 buttons)
- Leave them when you are shown a warning
- Press Vol Up to enter download mode
If you can enter download, then I can suggest flashing stock firmware from Odin
- Start up Odin (I se 3.07)
- Load up the downloaded stock rom and wait till it is complete
- Connect the phone (should be in download mode)
- You'll see "Added" status
- Only 2 options should be selected (Auto Reboot and Reset Time) nothing else
- "Start"
PS: If you're on 4.1 then I recommend staying on 4.1 esp if you flash a lot of roms. Stay away from the official 4.3 otherwise you might get radio/baseband issues later on which cause network issues.

Your emmc chip is corrupt or damaged, the NAND write fail message is the proof.
Try flashing the rescue firmware (search in general forum), but follow the guide exactly as it includes a pit file.
If that fails then you need a new motherboard.

Can you access recovery now? if yes, try a "factory rest/data wipe" option and reboot
If this doesn't work, then you'll need a rescue firmware from here.
As previously mentioned: Use it with a lot of care.

thanks got that now. but while i waited for reply, i flashed International-GT-i9300-StockRecovery again and it run thru a load of writing scrolling down the screnn. ened up giving me think it was 5 options, one being reset/data wipe option. done that and the reboot option after that but it hangs on the splash screen.
so tried to flash the pit file and others i downloaded for recovery, tried flashing them and cam up with this log:

Anyone still around to help with Galaxy Player 5.0 U.S.?

I have a YPG70 that I thought was dead and had the phone-yellow!triangle-pc icon only able to show. I was able to flash it using a ton of different sites finally, and can get to the downloader screen and I also can boot into an Android System recovery <3e> screen but it's as if the Power button won't work for Enter to select anything. Odin seems to recognize when I'm on that screen but when I go to flash the .tar file it fails, and stays stuck here...

I'd like to just get this back to stock if possible. Any help is greatly appreciated.
You have to take the battery out. There's 3 screws, 2 underneath the USB port and 1 in the sd card bay. Pop the left side first. Take the clip off then pop it back on to reset. Then plug Odin in. I had the same issue the other day

Thanks for your reply. So if I do that it will boot up fine? After all the time I've put in trying so many things I would love it to be that simple, but I honestly feel like it would take more than that. I have to figure out how to take the it apart without damaging it then.

Well, that didn't work. Thanks for the suggestion. Same error on recovery screen and still just gets stuck at "setup connection" in Odin.
