[Q] SGS2 (GT-I9100) Recovery After Flashing Kernal - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. When I got my phone at the end of last year I rooted it using a Chain-Fire kernal - v 4.2, I think. After flashing, it worked perfectly, since when I have flashed the old bootloader to get my USB Jig working to remove the yellow triangle and flashed a patch again to allow the USB Jig to reset the binary counter.
In the past week or two I have very much wanted to install and get the new Sky Go application working and I have been very successful following the advices on the App Thread.
What I had to do was flash the Stock kernal for my Stock Rom - I have never messed with my Rom - it is Gingerbread 2.3.4 in a CPW phone here in the UK.
Doing the flash and installing Voodoo OTA (to temporarily hide my root) has been enormously successful and the guys working on this need my sincere thanks -
Now then to my query....
The original Chain-Fire mod v 4.2 installed CWM.
After of course cancelling the "hide root" function to show my phone as rooted once more, I went to do a backup, using CWM but it refuses to work. It says my kernal needs v 5.0. Obviously the Stock Rom I flashed to get Sky Go working has thrown CWM some what.
I have downloaded Rom Manager from the Market but this seems not to work either - it starts to work (reboots) but then halts with the following messages: -
E : failed to verify whole-file signature
E : signature verification failed
Installation aborted
Could someone sort me out please???
What I would like is some way of installing a backup previously made before flashing the Stock kernal and also to make a fresh backup now.
Thank in anticipation
roz

I have posted the above in the incorrect forum - could you please transfer to the Samsung Galaxy SII I9100 forum please
Thanks

Ok I think I found the answer somewhere else.....
When to flash a Stock kernal, you lose the ability to backup and Restore, even though your root is preserved.
That is unless someone else knows different?

You're right, when you flash the stock kernel you lose CWM. Just flash a CWM kernel with mobile Odin and CWM will work again. You will need to flash back the stock kernel whenever you want to watch sky go...

[Q] Need Help

Alright i have been trying and trying to get my phone to have the di05modem and be running the Dl30 froyo. I do not know what i am doing wrong nothing seems to be working and i have had to us odin restore files 3 times now. so here i am again
Phone curnnet setup STOCK
Model number
SCH-I500
Firmware version
2.1-update1
Baseband version
S:i500.04 V.DI01
Kernel version
2.6.29
Build number
SCH-I500.DI01
Problem one i am having is getting CWM installed. i try it through odin and it works one time then not the next, giving me the error of E: signature failed oh file i used was clockworkmod ALL.zip
Once i do it it to work i have use odin to then install DJ05modem.tar. It says everything went fine, i let it boot and it works, the modem then says v.dj05
So then i try to install the stock dj05 rom/system, file DJ05_stock.zip through CWM it says it works and all is good. But i then try to boot and it makes it to the samsung logo and then just keeps resting itself
THen i jsut reset everything back to stock using the odin recovery files and im back to square one as i bought the phone.
Yes i am rooted that works everytime without a hitch. so what am i donig wroung
Im a little confused.
you say that ODIN works one time then does not work? You should only have to flash clockwork once.
It sounds like you are having a kernel problem. I am no dev but your description of the logo sounds a lot like what happened when I installed a voodoo kernel over a non voodoo ROM. I also do not see you mention the install of a kernel of any kind, you might search and see if there is a specific kernel needed for your rom. Much like the Super Clean roms have their own kernels that they work with.
Hopefully that can get you squared away in the right direction!

[Q] Play branded firmware, failed backup, what next?

I bought sgs2 few weeks ago, had some fun with stock and samsung apps, then I decided that some changes would be nice
found this great forum, with all knowledge and I have to admit I'm overwhelmed and kinda lost.
rooted my phone with Doomlord method (zerg rush exploit), worked like a charm, installed Titanium Backup, that went smoothly too. From what I understand that didn't change flash counter so I can unroot and keep my warranty in case of hardware problems, am I right?
Then I installed ROM manager and here is where problems started, when I click Flash Recovery it's downloading some file, but when I boot to recovery mode, there is info about e: failed to verify whole-file signature and I can only reboot. If that failed, what did it exactly do with my stock firmware and flash counter? please forgive my noob questions, it's my first android device, I'm reading and learning, but it's a lot to process.
I have branded Play (polish provider) firmware (2.3.3, XWKE7) and I can't upgrade it, cuz I can't backup stock firmware with CWM, I'm afraid to flash without backup in case I need take my phone to samsung.
I would love to at least upgrade to 2.3.5 or try some nice custom roms you guy cook here so skillfully but need some advice any info will be greatly appreciated
Hey hey,
This happens to me too when I installed ROM Manager, and then Flashed a recovery. It does not boot into the orange ClockworkMod Recovery, instead it boots into the stock recovery saying an error.
Don't worry, it did not do anything bad to your phone, it just attempted to install the ClockworkMod recovery but just fails, no biggie All you have to do is flash a custom kernel through Odin, such as CF-Root or Ninphetamine, then you will have ClockworkMod Recovery installed by default. The flash recovery option is for other phones that do not have the secure kernel that Samsung installs into your phone by default.
I use CriskeloROM on my phone, in my opinion, this is my favorite ROM because of the constant updates and massive collection of add ons. It is currently running on 2.3.5 and has a base of XWKJ2. Check out the link in my signature for more details about the ROM.
thank you so much for your answer, good to know I didn't break anything (yet! )
as you advice I will take a look at Criskelo ROM

[Q] Failed to verify whole-file signature

Hey so, im getting really mad at my phone atm. Ive been trying to add a room to the phone after i rooted it using Odin.
version 2.3.5, the phone IS rooted, i can use clock work mod, change files with root explorer. etc
Here is my problem, when i try to backup my phone using ClockWorkMod Recovery, i get ''failed to verify whole-file signature'' Ive been googling my problem now and read ****loads of posts about it.. I also get this error trying to room Cyanogen
I got Android Recovery e3 or something, i tryed to add a edited version with Root explorer, didnt work.
Im trying to add galaxys2 / nightly by Cyanogen version 7.1..
So what can i do to remove this ''failed to verify whole-file signature''
Downgrade to e2? And how do i do it..? if thats the case
Im a complete noob, i had the phone for like 1 week, and i really want a custom room...
You're using stock recovery, not CWM recovery.
So e3 is stock recovery? How can i then get CWM recovery? I download it, flashed etc, but i still got the same e3 when i reboot my phone
flash a custom kernel with cwm integrated (eg spedmod/hardcores/cf root)
So uhm, im checking this link out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
And i should download one of the files, i got no clue what files i should download. And should i just add the pdf file into Odin?
Because when i followed this guide on Youtube, i only needed to download a pdf file and click start.. Thats prob my problem? I should have uploaded a bootloader aswell? (assuming bootloader = bios/android recovery)
Can u guys help me picking the file on that site, i have no clue what to download -.-
My Phone says, I9100xxiki4
The one under says [email protected] #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.Xwki8
For starters, wrong device thread!
Read this, and then read it some more.

We could tell you how to do it, but it's best to understand what you're doing. Everything you need to know is in the link above.
Please read the sticky guide to rooting it will have link to chainfire thread follow instructions.. its far more simple than reads.
At the moment you still have stock kernel and no recovery due to this.

offff, im trying to read up and everything. But this isnt so easy for a guy coming from a Iphone to android.. ive rooted my phone using a guide on youtube.. The Phone is rooted, i used a file that was completely the same as i got just that it was rooted instead of stock... Guess i have to read a little more
You will likely run into issues if you try to flash CM7 from a CF-Root kernel from what *I've heard*.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176411
What I'd do:
-run CF Root for a while; get to know the phone and what it can/can't do,
-back up your efs folder before you start flashing ROMs or other kernels,
-when you decide it's time for CM7 flash a Siyah kernel via CWM recovery,
-then flash CM7 paying particular attention to the instructions in the link.
So i think i got it now, or. Cyanogen mod 7 loops in the startup -.-..
What i did before is that i used odin, i should have just restarted my phone there.
Not going into Clockwork thingy and flash it, when i did that the phone just went back to e3.. Now i restarted the phone and got more options (cwm.based recovery v5.0.2.7)
1 Update
Trying to sort this out -.- I prob just went full retarded with my phone.. I had Cyanogen version 7.1 on my sd card, tryed to update it. And didnt work, just loooppping..
Can someone plz help me, i got so many dumb problems from just rooting my phone...
2 Update
Now its just stuck on the startup screen, ive been messing around and stuff in the cwm. How can i undo this, atm i just want my phone back to normal. And work from scratch -.- And how come i couldnt update the Cyanogen from sdcard........ --.--
Clean phone
Download Odin and relevant stock rom for your phone .

jje
Im such a noob, how do i clean the phone?
Im really sorry for wasting your time with my noobness, i though when i finally got cwm recovery thingy to work i could finally install my cyanogen mod... But then something failed, i booted the phone, and it got stuck on the screen. Now only samsung galaxy s2 thingy shows. And nothing else happends.... Geeeeeeeeeez i shouldnt have messed around without knowing what to do, and i would have saved u guys some time...
update, The triangle is gone and everything. Im back to e3 but my phone just wont boot... I dont get it... sigh
update 2, Can u help me finding my stock kernel ? Maybe im just ****ing up with something there?
Did you read the install instructions from the CM7 nightlies thread I linked you to?
Did you try to flash to CM7 from a CF Root kernel? (many/most aren't successful flashing CM7 from a CF Root kernel)
Did you flash it twice? (must flash it twice upon first install)
Your best bet now is to follow the directions that JJEgan linked you to to at least get your phone up and running again on stock firmware. Take it one step at a time and save any more modding for another day.
Ninja Edit: you got a free "thanks" from me by accident. Paypal me $5 and we'll call it even.
I dont get it, why wont it load when i loaded in my stock kernel... After i wiped and everything using e3.. Man this is sooooooo annoying...
And mudferret i would if i had my card here. trust me i would pay $1000 if i got this **** to work, this is frustrating
sucks to be a noob
Im prob spamming something on this site with my edits and posts.
My kernels have been on 40 mb, because i picked the Stock Kernel, now i picked 'Nordic' Lets see if this works. This file is on 272 mb
Update
Got it working now!!!
Think im gonna put my superskills away for a while untill i read up and understand how this works! Thanks alot for helping me out <3
Glad you're sorted out. Take your time, no rush to mod. Good luck.

[Q] Return phone to stock for sale

Hi Folks,
I am selling my GS3 to Mazuma mobile for £90 & need to return the phone to stock samsung rom from the custom rom I'm using at the moment (Fusion 2.0.6)
1 Use philz recovery to do full phone wipe & also the install new rom wipe.
2 Use Odin to flash the last UK BTU stock rom MK6.
3 Possibly use TriangleAway to get rid of the red exclamation mark when phone first boots.
4 Possibly flash stock rom again to be sure.
Are those steps ok or is there anything else I will need to do?
Would really appreciate quick reply as I will be wiping & flashing stock tomorrow before posting to Mazuma the same day.
Cheers.

Download official stock rom for your region, wipe data/cache from recovery, put phone in Download mode, close Kies from Task Manager, start Odin, connect phone to PC and flash stock rom. After the flashing process is done enter recovery and make wipe data/cache and then reboot. Use triangle away to clear the binary count + the exclamation mark. If it needs root permission flash a custom kernel to gain root and then re-run triangle away. After clearing the binary count and exclamation sign you can re-flash the stock rom. Make another wipe data/cache after flashing it and you should be good to go
Goodluck mate !!!:thumbup::thumbup:

Cheers for the reply AlexVat
Was kinda hoping it wasn't going to be so complicated lol, I assume when I flash stock rom with Odin that will wipe Philz recovery & just have the stock one?
Could it be possible to run triangle away first then then just flash stock rom?
All replies appreciated
Well triangle away didn't work when I ran that first & it didn't even reboot into it's custom recovery, also thought I borked my Samsung 32gb SD card, used my S3 to erase it after copying everything off it I needed but it then wouldn't mount again. Tried it in PC & kept getting write protected error when trying to format it.
As last resort I fired it into my Sony Z2 & it said it was corrupted, tapped the message & it then fixed what ever was wrong with it & formatted it. Will just flash stock rom tomorrow morning & fire it to them, from what I see online they don't really care if it was rooted.
All done, custom binary says no & stock BTU MK6 rom installed, will get posted tomorrow & will have £90 in my bank by Sat
Also getting replacement Z2 due to gaps, over heating & camera being off centre, will be checking it fully & using built in diagnostics to make sure screen has no dead pixels etc.
Mods can close this thread if they wish, many thanks to AlexVat for the help

Help with recovery

Hi,
Just got my phone back from servicing.
And now it has a stock recovery 3e and some Stock JB rom (not sure if its rooted or not).
Thing is, i've read like 7-8 different posts on flashing a new Rom, or Kernal or Recovery, but no complete guide to explaing the proccess, and now i'm scared to flash anything from fear of bricking my phone.
I want to flash an official Samy based JB rom (i found one) , but do i need to flash a custom recovery/kernal first (like PhilZ CWM?) or other way around ?
Any help is highly appreciated
The chances are that Samsung have returned your device to fully unrooted stock.
There are root checker apps on playstore that can confirm this.
If you are un rooted, the easiest way to get root back is to use PhilZ kernel......you simply flash it using the stock recovery. With regards to what you *want* to flash.......
You need to provide more details as to what the rom actually is, where it came from, what file format you downloaded the ROM as......that sort of thing....
Hey tnx for replying
Yes , you were right.
I flashed CWM via Odin (worked, but i got the yellow triangle now) sign.
After that i did this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/orig-development/repartition-memory-s2-t3018749 , worked
And then i installed an Samsung based JB 4.1.2 rom standard via recovery.
all works well now,i think, just booted up 2min ago.
Phone can see all my internal storage space and sd card, think all is well.
Did i do it right ?
It sounds like it, except that you probably didn't need to repartition the device......If you'd been flashing a lollipop rom, then the repartition would have been necessary, but not for JB......
Incidentally, what is the name of the rom you flashed? As Sammy stock roms can normally only be odin flashed.....
I realise that, but the extra space for apps sounded really nice.
I installed this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/development-derivatives/rom-custom-stock-rom-5-0-edition-t2076568
