[Q] Failed to verify whole-file signature - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey so, im getting really mad at my phone atm. Ive been trying to add a room to the phone after i rooted it using Odin.
version 2.3.5, the phone IS rooted, i can use clock work mod, change files with root explorer. etc
Here is my problem, when i try to backup my phone using ClockWorkMod Recovery, i get ''failed to verify whole-file signature'' Ive been googling my problem now and read ****loads of posts about it.. I also get this error trying to room Cyanogen
I got Android Recovery e3 or something, i tryed to add a edited version with Root explorer, didnt work.
Im trying to add galaxys2 / nightly by Cyanogen version 7.1..
So what can i do to remove this ''failed to verify whole-file signature''
Downgrade to e2? And how do i do it..? if thats the case
Im a complete noob, i had the phone for like 1 week, and i really want a custom room...

You're using stock recovery, not CWM recovery.

So e3 is stock recovery? How can i then get CWM recovery? I download it, flashed etc, but i still got the same e3 when i reboot my phone

flash a custom kernel with cwm integrated (eg spedmod/hardcores/cf root)

So uhm, im checking this link out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
And i should download one of the files, i got no clue what files i should download. And should i just add the pdf file into Odin?
Because when i followed this guide on Youtube, i only needed to download a pdf file and click start.. Thats prob my problem? I should have uploaded a bootloader aswell? (assuming bootloader = bios/android recovery)
Can u guys help me picking the file on that site, i have no clue what to download -.-
My Phone says, I9100xxiki4
The one under says [email protected] #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.Xwki8

For starters, wrong device thread!
Read this, and then read it some more.

We could tell you how to do it, but it's best to understand what you're doing. Everything you need to know is in the link above.

Please read the sticky guide to rooting it will have link to chainfire thread follow instructions.. its far more simple than reads.
At the moment you still have stock kernel and no recovery due to this.

offff, im trying to read up and everything. But this isnt so easy for a guy coming from a Iphone to android.. ive rooted my phone using a guide on youtube.. The Phone is rooted, i used a file that was completely the same as i got just that it was rooted instead of stock... Guess i have to read a little more

You will likely run into issues if you try to flash CM7 from a CF-Root kernel from what *I've heard*.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176411
What I'd do:
-run CF Root for a while; get to know the phone and what it can/can't do,
-back up your efs folder before you start flashing ROMs or other kernels,
-when you decide it's time for CM7 flash a Siyah kernel via CWM recovery,
-then flash CM7 paying particular attention to the instructions in the link.

So i think i got it now, or. Cyanogen mod 7 loops in the startup -.-..
What i did before is that i used odin, i should have just restarted my phone there.
Not going into Clockwork thingy and flash it, when i did that the phone just went back to e3.. Now i restarted the phone and got more options (cwm.based recovery v5.0.2.7)
1 Update
Trying to sort this out -.- I prob just went full retarded with my phone.. I had Cyanogen version 7.1 on my sd card, tryed to update it. And didnt work, just loooppping..
Can someone plz help me, i got so many dumb problems from just rooting my phone...
2 Update
Now its just stuck on the startup screen, ive been messing around and stuff in the cwm. How can i undo this, atm i just want my phone back to normal. And work from scratch -.- And how come i couldnt update the Cyanogen from sdcard........ --.--

Im such a noob, how do i clean the phone?
Im really sorry for wasting your time with my noobness, i though when i finally got cwm recovery thingy to work i could finally install my cyanogen mod... But then something failed, i booted the phone, and it got stuck on the screen. Now only samsung galaxy s2 thingy shows. And nothing else happends.... Geeeeeeeeeez i shouldnt have messed around without knowing what to do, and i would have saved u guys some time...
update, The triangle is gone and everything. Im back to e3 but my phone just wont boot... I dont get it... sigh
update 2, Can u help me finding my stock kernel ? Maybe im just ****ing up with something there?

Did you read the install instructions from the CM7 nightlies thread I linked you to?
Did you try to flash to CM7 from a CF Root kernel? (many/most aren't successful flashing CM7 from a CF Root kernel)
Did you flash it twice? (must flash it twice upon first install)
Your best bet now is to follow the directions that JJEgan linked you to to at least get your phone up and running again on stock firmware. Take it one step at a time and save any more modding for another day.
Ninja Edit: you got a free "thanks" from me by accident. Paypal me $5 and we'll call it even.

I dont get it, why wont it load when i loaded in my stock kernel... After i wiped and everything using e3.. Man this is sooooooo annoying...
And mudferret i would if i had my card here. trust me i would pay $1000 if i got this **** to work, this is frustrating
sucks to be a noob
Im prob spamming something on this site with my edits and posts.
My kernels have been on 40 mb, because i picked the Stock Kernel, now i picked 'Nordic' Lets see if this works. This file is on 272 mb
Update
Got it working now!!!
Think im gonna put my superskills away for a while untill i read up and understand how this works! Thanks alot for helping me out <3

Glad you're sorted out. Take your time, no rush to mod. Good luck.

[Q] Need help getting a custom ROM, cant get passed E3 to use clockwork

Hi, Ok, so I am new at this and I have a samsung galaxy vibrant on tmobile...i got it and it was running eclair 2.1, I figured out how to root it and then upgraded to froyo 2.2. Now I am wanting to get either Bionix ROM or Nero V3. I have followed all the steps, got rommanager, did the flash clockworkmod recovery, dowloaded the zip file and put it in the root of my sd, but when i go to reboot, it wont run as clockwork, no matter how many times i try!
I read that it is because 2.2 has recovery e3 and i need e2...so it says t download a kernal that contains clockwork recovery but the problem is i cannot find one. I can find stuff all day long about the galaxy I9000 but nothing on the vibrant!
I have Odin and was wondering can I flash the rom straight to the phone?
My model number is SGH-T959, Kernel is 2.6.32.9, and build is FROYO.UVKB5.
Please help me, I really have no clue what I am doing, I just want my phone to run fast, get a nice looking theme for it, and not have to worry about it messing up and from what i have read the only way to that is to get a custom ROM and the only way to get themes is thru a custom ROM....
So if anyone can tell me how to go about getting my phone to recover using clockwork and any links i need to download the stuff I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!!
Just bricked my phone i think!!!
Ok so i just followed all of the directions on this sight on how to do it, i backed up my apps with titanium then put my phone in download mode with odin and tried to flash the kernal for my phone to upgrade it and on odin it just said on the screen part, modem, it was green and nothing else happened so i unplugged it because it wouldnt reboot even after waiting a while (10min) and then the screen just showed a broken link between phone and comp and wouldnt change, so i looked at how to restore it with odin and did that and now it will go to the download screen again but nothing else! PLEASE HELP!!!!
follow this guide it will solve all your problems press the thanks button

[Q] Big problem, need help bad. ; ;

I have a SGS2 GT-9100M (Bell canada) Used on Telus.
I used the root guide from here http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...lock-root-bell-galaxy-s2-step-step-guide.html step by step.
I then installed both titanium premium and rom manager premium. I tried to back up using rom manager but it gave me the "Failed to verify whole-file signature" error.
For whatever reason, I forgot about the backup and proceeded to attempt to load the 115 daily CM7 build from CWM and got the same error i got when attempting backup. Now this is where I should have stopped.....BUT I then decided to load 115 through the recovery menu, so I had to get the .zip onto the phone by dropping debug mode which worked fine but got me into a boot loop and I didn't reinitialize debug mode
After reading around it said to flash twice and this should fix it. I flashed it over 9000 times (4), but to my dismay it was still stuck in loop.
So I found this Video on the boot loop sticky. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVwiiSStuSQ and attempted to flash the Stock rom from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
But it hangs about 1/3 of the way through. I unplug it and it says "encountered an error during firmware update, please connect to kies and use the emergency recovery" or something like that. Well ok so that did nothing either, kies cannot help me unless the firmware update failed IN kies.
I'm not an expert at this stuff but I'm also not brand new and know I could have done something stupid here without realizing it.
I CAN get to download mode and flash the stock kernel and the CF kernel to get back CWM recovery mode in blue but the stock bell rom will NOT complete. IF anyone has any clue that will help me figure this out I will be beyond thankful.
ps: I also tried flashing the stable CM7 release but this did not help.
The worst part about this is that I have to use my milestone again. ~_~
Have you tried one of intratechs Frankenstein Roms, it may help.

Help i messed something up

ok so i wouldnt say im a noob but im not as advanced as some of yous. last night i flashed a leaked ics onto my phone and loved it with one exception. i couldnt figure out how to root it. all my apps are backed up on titanium backup and i didnt want to have to get all of them manually. so i flashed back to stock using odin with a file i used back when that crappy update came out. i rooted it with super one click and and then went to put on a prerooted ics... when in recovery mode now i get this message
cant access to '/system/csc/att/system/'
i try putting on cwm and siyah and i keep getting authentication errors and the installation aborts. also recovery mode wont read my external sd card now. when the phone is booted up it works fine except i tried to do the factory ota update and it keeps failing. i tried reflashing back to stock again and did the update unrooted and it still failed.
i know you guys hate hate when people ask without researching so i did SOME forum browsing and found nothing. sorry i dont really have time to look too extensively. i just want to know how to fix it. i appreciate any help i can get

Start with getting back to stock using this guide. Check for ICS bootloaders too, you probably flashed them and you have to get stock ones back (careful, flashing bootloaders can cause hardbricking). Once you're back to stock and rooted, you shouldn't need to ever use PC Odin again.
Then use this guide for rooting/flashing.
One other note: when you tried to install CWM, it sounds like you loaded an update.zip onto your phone then tried to install it using stock recovery. Stock recovery won't let you install unsigned update.zips, which is why that method for getting CWM on your phone will never work (hence the authentication error and installation abort). For our phone, CWM is only included in custom kernels, that's the only way to get it on there, and don't even think about updating or changing it via other means. Just flash a custom kernel, it'll include CWM, use it until you want to switch kernels.
Hit my thanks button, I was really nice this time. And post in Q/A next time as well.
EDIT: Skip the second guide if all you want is stock. You should be able to update OTA after following the first guide. Though even if stock is what you want, I highly recommend flashing a custom GB kernel because a) they're more stable and faster and b) you'll have CWM in case you need it.
You started off mentioning about "leak ics" which I have absolutely zero experience.
My suggestion:
1. Try to get it back to stock. Make sure it works correctly.
2. If hasn't rooted yet, do so.
3. Getting CMW into the device by flashing custom kernel.
4. From there, install any ICS ROM you want.

[Q] Help request, S2 stuck on boot logo

Hello all,
I have tried many things before asking for help, but nothing worked so far.
Here is the story:
I was on ICS 4.0.4, with default ROM coming from carrier.
I wanted to install CM9.1,
spent countless hours doing all backup and reading tutorial.
Tried finally yesterday and it was stuck doing "wiping data". Left it for 20min+ and nothing.
After restarting it, it is now stuck on the boot logo.
I couldn't enter anymore CWM or stock recovery (up+home+power), but could enter Download mode.
So I tried a couple of things I have read on the forum, like installing Siyah-s2-v5.0.1.tar through Odin 3.04 but I still cannot enter recovery mode.
I've read (too late) about the mmc brick bug (couldn't find anyone speaking about it in any tutorial until I reached this point... nothing on CM wiki or in other tuto... classic!).
I hope I'm not in this case though as I can still go to DL mode, and the phones having the brick bug are completely dead (blank screen or no DL mode), as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756242
I managed to finally get CWM working only by using GT-I9100_ICS_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.5.0.4.tar from Odin, then tried to install CM9.1 from SD card but after reboot it is stuck on the blue cyanogenmod animation boot screen and nothing happens.
Tried also to restore from CWM my nandroid backup, but during the restore it seems to hang then restart by itself, and then I'm back to Galaxy S boot logo (the animated one with the big S).
And after this I have lost again access to recovery mode.
I can't go back to stock and I can't install CM... I was not expecting such issues, it all seemed pretty basic on paper.
I'm really stressed and don't know what to do
Flash a stock rom in Odin (download mode), re-root your phone/flash a kernel with CWM, restore your backup ?
Hi,
thanks for answering,
I have tried to locate such a rom, but I'm not sure which one... is there a specific one to try ? could you point me to it please ?
so far I have tried I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXALPQ_I9100XXLPQ_HOME.tar.md5
but no luck
you also say "re-root", at the time I used this method:
[GUIDE] ROOT/UNROOT Stock ICS Firmware without flashing unsecure kernel - xda-developers
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Do I need root to install Siyah kernel from Odin ?
I'm trying one from sammobile... let's hope :/
The bad thing is I had no Yellow triangle at the beginning since I'm stuck in this boot loop or no boot to be precise.
Now that I have tried different things to fix it, it is still not working and I have my flash counter = 10.
I cannot even go back to the shop, is there a way to reset it knowing I cannot even reach the OS, I have only DL mode or CWM...
Use a stock rom for your region/carrier (or any stock rom from any region really), it doesn't really matter as I presume you'll be restoring a backup and/or going back to a custom rom anyway won't you ?
Samfirmware & AndroidFirmwares.net have lots of stock roms.
No, you don't need root to flash an Odin version of Siyah. So yes, you can flash that after you've got stock up & running to root your phone rather than re-rooting your phone by flashing a CFRoot kernel or using another root method. Just make sure the version of Siyah you're going to flash matches up with the stock rom you've got on (I.E if you flash a GB stock rom use GB Siyah, ICS stock = use ICS Siyah, etc, etc).
thank you again, I'm downloading the rom from sammobile matching my carrier,
Would you be so kind to send me a PM with your skype username or anything to "chat" with you ? I'm really worried and I spent all night already trying to fix it with no progress at all
Don't worry about the flash counter. That's the least of your problems while your phone is borked Worry about it when it's fixed. There's nothing you can do about the triangle while your phone is cactus.
When you've got it up & running again, use Triangle Away.
But first things first.

You're welcome.
Um, no. Absolutely not. Nothing personal, but if I did that for every person who's asked me for 'hands on' help since I've been here, I'd have spent my time doing nothing else. I don't do 'personal' with people from XDA (which is why I have PM's blocked except for mods).
Besides, you're going to learn much more fixing this yourself. I've given you a stack of information thus far, ball is in your court. Every answer to every question you could possibly ask is on this site. It just sometimes takes a bit of work/reading on your part to find it.

ok I understand.. it is just I have literally spent more than 8 hours on it and had not make any progress at all (even worse I cannot return it to the shop because of the yellow triangle).
I appreciate your help, it gives me a bit of hope but I'm in a very bad situation and I feel I have read and do so much already with no success at all.
I will try your option of restoring the one from Sammobile, I have tried other before without any luck, maybe this one will do... (5min left to DL it).
thanks again for your support
I know where you're coming from. The first flash I tried when I got my phone in 2011 borked because I was careless, and it took me a bit over a day to get the right info/files/etc to get it fixed. I know it's frustrating/tiring/annoying & you're wondering at the start whether you can even fix it. But as long as you've got download mode 99 times out of 100 you can save it.
And as I said, it's good experience; once you've fixed it, you'll be able to handle anything that comes up in future
Let us know how you go. I'm going to bed shortly, but I'm sure someone else will step up & help if you have any further problems.
You're welcome Happy to point you in the right direction.
I have flashed the rom, the exact same one as I had before everything happened...
if it helps, I flashed it from Odin 3.04 as PDA.
I9100BVLPH_I9100TMULPH_I9100BVLPE_HOME.tar.md5
I'm now back to the Samsung GALAXY S2 GT-I9100 logo and nothing happens.
I cannot use recovery mode,
I can use DL mode (it shows 11 counts and current binary as Samsung official.)
update:
I left the phone on the first logo for about 5min and it moved to the next Samsung Galaxy S2 logo, with the big animated S.
I'm waiting but nothing else is happening.
I'm still desperate to fix it.
One thing which can be relevant, whenever I try to wipe or format /data from CWM, my phone is restarting after a few minutes or is saying it cannot be done.
I can format /cache and /system.
Could it be the root cause ? Any way of fixing it ?
Thank you
update: I cannot mount /data from CWM, it says Error mounting /data!
is it the brick bug ? :|
Easy now....your device is still good.
Those animations should take like 1-2 mins when you flash a rom.
Now, you are completly sure that you are actually flashing the right ROM for your device model?
If so, just keep flashing stock roms until you're up and running again, so you can start from scrap.
I tried, the issue is as soon as I flash a stock rom (through Odin), then I can't get into stock recovery mode anymore, I have to flash GT-I9100_ICS_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.5.0.4.tar to get back the recovery mode.
I tried to flash several times, I think it is down to the fact I cannot mount or format /data.
Which is why I'm wondering if it is the famous brick bug.
My device is GT-I9100 and I took the stock rom from sammobile:
I9100BVLPH_I9100TMULPH_I9100BVLPE_HOME.tar.md5 which is ICS 4.0.4 (that I had before trying to move to CM9.1 and having all this mess in my hands.)
flash this:
http://www.sammobile.com/2012/11/15/i9100xxlsj-%E2%80%93-galaxy-s-ii-android-4-1-2-jelly-bean-test-firmware/.
you are on siyah kernel right?
what you wanna do know is to get to whatever rom your flashing, forget about cmw for now.
this also might help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458
So it is not lost yet ? Not the brick bug ?
just to be sure:
you want me to install through Odin: Siyah-s2-v5.0.1-CWM.zip
then going back to DL mode
I flash through Odin: I9100XXLSJ_I9100OXXLS1_OXX.zip (coming from your link).
anything I'm missing (even if it seems obvious, please let me know as I'm maybe missing something important)
?
I still cannot do Factory reset... is it a problem ?
I dunno what kernel you are using, If stock 4.0.4 kernel you should flash siyah first (safe kernel, no brick bug), and then countinue flashing the ROM. Check out the brick bug thread in general SII forum for directions if you want.
BTW, Odin recognizes your phone right? Check it out, you'll get a huge long breath.
BTW 2: you don't have any kies applications running in your pc.....am I right? if so, CLOSE THEM ALL!
I did had stock 4.0.4 kernel when I first tried to follow CM9.1 wiki, and I did a factory reset through CWM... which is why I think I might have bricked it...
I have checked the brick bug thread (too late it seems...) but so far I can't be sure if I'm in this case or not as they say they can't even reach DL mode, and I can.
Odin recognizes my phone, yes, but anything I flash is stuck on the animated logo.
I do not have Kies installed, just installed the drivers.

A small problem with Recovery

Here's the deal:
I rooted my phone a long time ago, and have been using CM since ICS. Mostly nightlies.
A few weeks ago I decided installing a Carbon nightly (4.3), and everything went smooth as usual.
Then new nightly came, so I decided flashing it. (Dirty flash, but it's that way from what I read in the Carbon thread)
The thing is, my phone boots up correctly, but I can't get into recovery mode. Whenever I try booting recovery mode, the logo appears, then the screen flashes gray. I have tried both the advanced reboot menu, the button combo, and ROM Man...jk
I think something might be wrong with the recovery included in the kernel. If that's the case, would it be OK to flash just a new kernel or do I have to reflash the whole thing?
I have already seen some guides on flashing kernels with mobile ODIN, but they're either ancient or for another model. Also, I don't know if that's the right thing to do under this situation.
I'd appreciate if someone pointed me in the right direction. I don't wanna frak up my phone.
You can install a kernel to see if that will solve the issue, but as far as I can see, the Carbon devs do not provide a stand alone kernel for their rom. You could use AJK or one of the other kernels though. Or you could just reinstall the rom to see if it would clear up the problem.
Or, you could extract the zImage from the full rom and use Mobile Odin.
I didnt want to create a new thread for this and get yelled at.. so I am asking the question here:
I had to do the ODIN method and returned my phone from ShoStock 3 to Stock Gingerbread, because for some reason my phone was getting stuck at the "samsung galaxy s2" boot screen.
So I am back on Stock Gingerbreak Rom and trying to install ClockWork Mod Recovery, so that I can restore the backup of ShoStock that I had created.
I am doing the Mobile Odin Lite method and I downloaded the i777 kernel. When I try to install it, I boot in the Android System Recovery (3e) and get the following errors:
Installing package...
Finding Package...
Verifying Update Package...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed.
Before I get yelled at, I searched google and came up with the solution -- all of which say that the issue can be easily fixed by toggling the setting in ClockWork Mod Recovery Mode, but I have to install it first, and whenever I try to install it, I get the above error.
Can someone help please?

3e recovery is the stock recovery. It means you have not installed a custom kernel yet. Please look at the links in my signature and use the guide information there, which will help you understand what you need to do to install mobile odin lite and then install a custom kernel.
Also, remember that you will need to have the correct version of ClockworkMod Recovery to restore your backup. If the backup and the version of CWM recovery are not compatible, it will not restore.
If you have questions, ask them here, but be aware, I only come on line usually two or three times a day to check the forums.

I followed Step 3a on this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18576627#post18576627
Unfortunately, for some reason, ODIN Lite was not recognizing DD_03042012.zip file. So I went with Siyah and downloaded the TAR file used ODIN to get the clockwork mod. It worked.
Now the problem is I cant restore my backup. I know the same backup has worked before, not it is giving me an error "Error while restoring /system". wth!
I dont remember what version of Clockwork Mod I had. I know it was an older version, becuase it didnt have touch.
How do I get a previous version of CWM?
But my problem isn't even remotely similar to this guy!
I'm trying to ask if there's some way to flash a new kernel/rom without using recovery, taking advantage of the fact that my phone boots fine but I can't boot recovery. That's the reason why I mentioned ODIN.
Also, go make your own thread. My question didn't even get answered
Actually,
Creepyncrawly, thanks for your help.
I downloaded ShoStock 3 and flashed it to get the previous version of CWM, and then was able to do a restore.
Sigh.. no harm done.
You can have your thread back... good luck!!

Yes, as stated by creepyncrawly, u can use mobile odin or regular odin to flash a kernel.
But i would suggest doing a MD5 check on the Rom u downloaded, because the Rom u flashed may be that of a corrupted download. If MD5 doesn't match then redownload, check MD5 and if good, reflash the Rom.
.....or maybe the nightly is messed up.

I can see why you could be upset that someone hijacked your thread.
I only see one question in your original post, which I believe I answered. You also requested assistance which I thought I provided.
Let me be a little more specific for you. Yes, you can flash just a kernel without re-flashing the system. However, you will need either an Odin flashable tar of the kernel, or you will need to install Mobile Odin and then you can flash a kernel directly from a zImage file.
However, I think 4-2ndtwin has the right of it. It was probably a bad flash, even though the phone booted normally. You should consider re-flashing the entire rom.
If you are not clear about anything, please ask questions.
Never mind.
I concluded it wasn't worth it just because I was lazy backing up stuff.
I used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525821, then flashed a clean ROM.
Thanks for the help, you guys are awesome.
