Did removing the sms apk break mms?
Sent from my MB508 using Tapatalk
break it how? mms.apk is your whole messaging app. if you remove it before adding another messaging app you wont be able to text.
Thanks for the tip and I was looking for this one.
However, what are those apps and what will happen if you remove them? Do you to replace them with a different app right away (just like the mms).
Maybe you can add a small description to the right on what the apps do and suggest a better replacement.
Maybe I'm asking too much (very noob user here) But great post anyhow!
Thanks.
No not asking too much at all. I will def add some descriptions when i get some time(Got a one year old driving me crazy right now). Most of the apps i have listed so far are just bloatware. Stuff SAmsung and the Providers added that you dont really need. As far as the messaging app theres no need to delete it i just wanted to let everyone know that its safe. If your using a different messaging app like GoSMS then why have the stock one?
kies air is an app that basically turns your phone into a web server, it has nothing to do with software updates.
Is that a web server in your pocket or are you just happy to see me.
*Never thought there would be a valid time I could say that.*

Allshare no problem.
The rest I dont have on my bell i717 so they are most likely just your carrier bloatware and should not be a problem
Is it better to freeze them? If I completely remove them is it going to effect feature OTA updates?

I think they are talking about deleting the actual apk files not deleting in tbu.
I freeze crap with tbu. That can be undone

Thanks for the reply. I usually just freeze bloatware myself, but don't mind deleting the apks to free space if it doesn't effect ota. Be my luck my kid would be watching netflix and update with out me replacing the apks. Happened on my LG.

Im not 100% on this but i believe we could use nitrality to replace a lot of these apps. It was designed for the samsung galaxy s but i think it will still work, ill give it a try in bit.
I rooted my note but having issues freezing apps. They seem to take forever to uninstall or freeze. Have to force stop TB to stop the hanging. By the way trying to freeze TW launcher.

You need to enable "Debugging Mode" before freezing.

After rooting my X10, i'm wondering how far you can go in deleting system apps.
I deleted the following without negative problems for the android system and x10 device:

- user manual
Is it safe to delete timescape, the standard message app, digital clock, playnow and dialer? Anybody done this before?
Thanks in advance!

i think so.
After uninstalling mediascape, for some weird reason my contact pictures resolution got lower.
hmm no, uninstalling mediascape doesn't seem like a good plan.
Did somebody uninstall the standard message app?

That doesn't seem to remove the lock after phone call.
I've deleted Timescape. Now I can't open my contacts anymore. So not a good idea
timescape removal
Won't be able to view contact details
can b set aside if you don't mind using phonebook replacements such as acontacts, quickcall or takephone (i think that's the name)
Mediascape removal
wont be able to change wallpapers but can still be done by using a third party app!
may have problems with receiving/attaching mms!
You'd require another app for music such as mixzing and another for pictures such as justpictures! (which I would pick over mediascape any day)
there's prob few more errors out there which I don't know about.
Id recommend getting titanium backup full version, the freeze/defrost option works wonders. its like uninstalling an app without actually uninstalling it.. Freeze the apps you want n if you get errors u just defrost the app n all should be back to normal!!
you can get rid of all the keyboards n stick to ya own.. default se 1 is SEMCime 1.0
(heads up, if you remove all default keyboards n have to factory data reset, ul have no keyboards to start off like me.. theres prob a solution but I had to reroot lol, also if you remove default launcher, in this event timescape would b your default launcher)
you can get rid of timescape themes, provider n plugin n just leave timescape, n everything should stil work as normal, no errors!! (that's if you don't use timescape like me)
You can remove
Digital clock
Playnow
Trackid
Userguide 1.0
Browser 1.6 (if you have an alternative)
Email 1.6 (i don't use it.. gmail will still b there though)
Home 1.6 (i used adw instead)
Voice dialer
User support 1.1.4
Drm protected content storage
Software update (if you don't plan on using it, same goes for the 1 below)
Com.sonyericsson.android.pccompanioninstaller
Com.sonyericsson.android.cdinfoaccess
Alarm clock (can use alternative! may possibly receive odd errors here and there)
I've removed the default messaging app before n used chompsms instead but I got like message delays, sometimes no messages at al so I don't realy touch it.. could possibly have been cause of another app cause I weren't paying too much attention in them days!
if the user who mentioned it earlier still has no problems then you can give it a try.. upto you! I might actually try freezin it n c what happens!
avoid the google stuff, its prob somehow linked to market.. you may have problems downloading from market there after!
Well sorry for the long essay guys.. hope it helps!!

Thank you very much for you comment Mobzter! That was what I was looking for .
I deleted the standard message app (i'm using handcent sms) and didn't receive any errors so far. I think i'll leave timescape for what it is, since it is so deeply rooted in all SE software and the x10 system.
I uninstalled the default Messaging app but facing some problems now. Using Titanium backup, I backup-ed the app before uninstalling but I cannot find the app now! Anyone can tell me what's the name of the Messaging app apk?
The thing with titanium backup is that no matter if you back it up or not you cannot restore the stock apps (default ones)
You can maybe try an alternative app such as chompsms/handcent altho didn't really work out for me
OR
you can try instal the default app
http://db.tt/JlnKmQ
If it doesn't work then you maybe required to push it to system.. don't have the code on me at mo but im sure someone will provide it, if that's the case!
Hope it helps!!
Edit - just realised I wrote all this only to find out I just replied to your post in the 'general section' of this forum lol.. bummer!

Possible Timescape fix
Now earlier i was looking through my phone with root explorer and i came across the timescape folder, now in there was a file that i THINK linked time scape to the phonebook etc, the code is below. Now, im not an experienced coder, but if we delete the part between the two <map> identifiers and overwrite the original with this one, its either going to screw up your phone or stop timescape being linked to the phonebook or do nothing
Let me know what you guys think before i try anything, is it worth testing out?

Just say goodbye already! Haha. QuikSense has the stock feel, it's faster and doesn't have the useless crap. Do it up. Most of the apps that install from Market backup can be removed, like the T-Mobile apps if they auto copy over.
this should be in the general not development section.
anyways yeah flash quiksense. It's debloated stock, with enhancement in performance, battery life, and coolness.

you can virtually remove all the obvious widgets and apps. Just don't touch any that may sound that it would be used by the system itself. Some apps for example wifi calling with FC like there's no tomorrow, but it would be fixed if you fixed permissions in recovery..
Actually i think you can remove anything that has a widget lol
I'm wondering myself what apps should I remove from the ROM. I would be grateful for any description of following apk files so that it would be easier for me to decide. I can't test it myself because I don't have Amaze 4G.

I hate to revive an old thread, but I just switched to stock and tried removing some bloat, and with the stock ROM being odexed, I've had some issues trying to remove apps. So now I'm stock again, fully unlocked, rooted, and full of bloatware.
Now the OP posted my SAME EXACT question, but to no surprise to THIS community, he didn't get much of a TRUE answer aside from the one I quoted. Now that we've all had this phone for a while, is there any updates from others who are running stock rooted on what is safe/unsafe to debloat?
Thanks everyone
PS... And can a mod please move this to Q&A or general... Doesn't belong in development.

Well I know that --IQ-tmobile-release-signed-zipaligned-v1.1.apk-- is Carrier IQ, so you probably would want to remove that. The thing is, I don't know how badly it will mess with your phone though. So remove it at your own risk.

Yeah, there are 2 files associated with carrieriq...one is an odex file I think...use root explorer to find it. Just type in ciq in the search box and it will show both files. Once you remove the apk, you will have to do a battery pull

I'd prolly leave it. Make sure you do 'clear dalvik cache' from within tb after you've removed what you want. Save carrieriq (system manager) till the end because its gonna go into fc city once you uninstall it. Then pull the battery and reboot
Oh, and welcome back to stock
Some of my apps are not staying installed. Anyone else ever run into this problem? Then when I go into the settings/manage applications the com/blahblahblah file is there with a little SD card image next to it but nothing actually installed. I do not move the apps to the SD card either.
More information? Rom? Etc?
I have this very same issue on the stock rom, I am rooted running ADW ex I notice that an application is no longer installed after random reboots. Never consistently though. one random sd card app will disappear from my list of applications and would have to reinstall it from the android market or reboot several times and it may come back on its own.
Wow thats so weird. I swear I made a post about this back in Sept and people probably thought I was crazy lol. I would reboot and my XDA or Riptide Gp would always disappear. I couldn't understand it, those suckers were deleting themselves every time. I started using titanium backup and I would just go reinstall it along with data. It would happen to me using adwEX as well and once I went back to the stock launcher and it hasn't happened since. Going a month without an app deleting itself now. This issue is definitely way over my head...

I also think that this may have happened after flashing the no clock zip in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377557
I never noticed it before then.
Edit, my girlfriends has the same things missing and she does not have the clock mod so it's not that. She also uses GoLauncher and it stock rooted.

I had tried to use the Yahoo mail client, saw something about it... reloaded it and unloaded it. restart no change
I've since loaded the Go contacts/dialer... No edit function there either, at least it does not crash.
So, What I think I need to do, and have not found anywhere, is to replace the Contacts files from a blank/stock system and then repopulate the data from an import.
Has this been done? Does anyone know how to do this?
Also, I am fine doing it manually via whatever needs to be done... and I can follow instructions.

Problem:
I cannot add/delete/edit/open any of my contacts using the stock contacts manager. I get the force close on the (proccess com.motorola.contacts).
Phone setup:
Unlocked and rooted
Superuser, Busybox, CPU tuner, CWM v5.0.0.6, RomRacer as well (all free versions)
System 4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US (2.3.4)
radio N_01.77.37P
kernel Faux .024
OK... Before the flames are turned on... Yes I have tried lots of the "solutions" to this and NO, they did not work.
Backtrack.

Yahoo authenticator caused this with me if frozen. Sounds like you uninstalled or froze something Contacts relies on to work.

Yahoo is a system app with the official build, so downloading Yahoo and installing it wont work. Try pulling it from a 2.3.4 build and pushing the apk to your phone. This is why using TiBu to backup and freeze apps is good.

Factory reset and flash rom or titanium backup restore might work

There are a number of apps which cause contacts to FC when you try to add or edit e contact. They are all tied in to contacts. You may not see an issue until you try to add or edit a contact. If you have FC with add or edit contact, best to unfreeze everything, then go through freezing apps one at a time until you start to get FC again, then you know what apps give the problem. I know Yahoo and/or Yahoo authenticator can be one which causes the FC problem if frozen or uninstalled.
Frozen
As said before.... The only thing I ever froze was the Updater.
Installed (crashed system) and removed Skype
Installed and removed Yahoo mail
Nothing else...
I am looking for a way to remove/replace the contact files and database, install a system new/empty structure and repopulate it, if at all possible.
If, from what attention I've gotten is true, apparently, there is no way to do this short of a full system wipe and restart...
Am I correct?
You could import from a VCard format. The following may help if I understand what you are looking for correctly:
http://code.google.com/p/vcardio/
If your contacts come from your Google account, you would have to disable syncing of contacts there, (or from wherever else they are coming from), and then delete them manually. Then you could import the new contact database.
I'll give it a go...
CaelanT.... Thanks, I'll look at what you gave me and see if it will work.
Just tried GB_AtrixMix_v1_by_otogy2002 - 2.3.6 STOCK ROM this weekend and I was able to fully edit the contacts. So my nagging assumption was correct, it is the contacts application in the stock 4.5.91... en.us rom that is the culprit, not actually my contacts themselves.
So, again, short of dropping another ROM on it and having to reload my applications (not really trusting of backup and restore of apps into a different ROM)...
Does anyone know how to fix my issue?
Do you have any apps that you have frozen?

There lies the problem. I did the same and nothing would work to fix. Had to rsd lite the stock sbf to get it working again. I was stocked rooted only, no unlocked bootloader at the time, running the stock rom/radio/kernel that came installed on the phone.
I was hoping there is someone somewhere who will read this and know how to replace the contacts application in the .91 ATT US stock ROM... I may have to ask, dare I say it.... Motorola support, and not mention the rooted and unlocked part...

PM Nottach. He is great with Blur ROM's.

>sigh<
I'll see if I can raise NOTTACH...
Worst case I wait and hope for ICS from Motorola, since a ROM overlay fixes it.
Thanks All!
Kenneth Penn is another Blurophile. Dunno how active he is with him moderating XDA now though. Worth a try PM'ing him too.

Basically the Blur Contacts app calls on a ton of other dependant apks such as yahoo, activesync, work contacts and so forth. And not having one of these apks will lead to FCs when trying to edit a contact. So like previous users said, do not freeze or uninstall any of these or else you'll mess it up. If it has contact in the name or is associated with a service that syncs contacts let it be.
OK...
I guess I'll just bang around some ROM's until I find one I like and wait out ICS from Motorola for us.
Thanks All...

Of course there are many others removable but I never tested that coz I need them and when untested I prefer not to say anything stupid... Plus the bar on the top had disappeared mysteriously(including g search and the application launcher etc) but when I touched they were always responsive...
If you have deleted some apps and the systems still works flawlessly, do share your list with me and I'll appreciate a lot if someone could solve my display problem mentioned above...
You deleted Fusion my friend, I believe it's kinda sorta needed!

My first impression was that list was overkill, but it's not my device! YMMV
Interesting. How does one go about removing those apps? I run stock HC, s-off and rooted.
Thanks!
Matt.

i use system app remover
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.danesh.system.app.remover
if you use titanium you can back up the apps before removing them so if they do F things up you can easily bring them back. Also gives option to just freeze the app so it doesnt run

I don't think titanium restores system apps...you have to save a copy of the apk before deleting then when you need it you can just move it back to the system directory to reinstall

So what' it's exact function? I've solved the problem by installing another launcher and it's working quite well
No one showing me something different there? Frankly I don't think it's overkilled.
