[solved] usb unplug no deep sleep figured out - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

This morning i ran a quick test on the deep sleep issue some of us are having.
If you unplug the usb charger from the phone with the screen off. It will not go into deep sleep.
However, if you turn the phone on, then unplug the usb charger from the phone it will go into deep sleep.
I tried this combo multiple times and it worked for me everytime.
Granted it not the true rootcause of the issue, but its a very easy workaround.

In a quick test with the OC kernel, this may just be true!
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App

nice find! i will confirm this later with mine. thinking back, when i unplug from my car charger i do turn the screen off first, so this is promising.

Mine has inexplicably and periodically failing to go into deep sleep, which is fixed by a restart, so this is interesting to me. I think there may be more than one trigger. I unplugged mine from the charger this morning with the screen on and afterward it wouldn't go into deep sleep. I don't know, however, if it had started doing that prior.

update
Well, I tried out this method again this morning. Turning on the screen, unlocking it before unplugging it, and reset the cpu spy.
It is going into deep sleep!!
I don't know why turning the screen makes it deep sleep, but it seems like a a clue the devs can use to figure this out!
Frank

Thanks OP! Ran a charge via USB to a dock (that always voided deep sleep in the past), charged to 100% last night. This morning turned on the screen before unplugging, and BAM, deep sleep! Great find!
Edit: Stock ROM with Da_G OC kernel

Someone please explain deep sleep to me and its benefits.

Deep sleep relates to the SPU State when the screen is off. The issue we are seeing is the CPU would run at 192 to 384 instead of Deep Sleep. This makes a considerable difference for Battery Life. CPU Spy is an app that can monitor.
No Deep Sleep 14 hours of battery life
Deep Sleep 22 hours of battery life
Hope this helps.

Well for one Da_G, haven't heard from him since just after putting up release, let alone he said he was Also working on a CWM yet someone else pushed one out first and still no update on his.... J/S. Most considerate people give some type of info that their alive, ect regardless if their working on it or not.
Just saying I'd hate to see development on this device not pick up and die so soon and have little like the infuse did. I know there's alot to wait for at first but common courtesy goes alot further
Big Dogg Infuse I997 ZeusB5 ICS!

I would'nt worry about Da_G and TwoChimp both have been around lurking on the IRC. Everyone is waiting on the stable CWM. The Alpha is out and has a few minor bugs. Once they get addressed in the next few days there are at least 4 Devs working on ROM's right now.
Just give it a little more time it takes time when they are doing it for free or beer money.

Same here, I tested this morning using my car charger which has always prevented deep sleep. Turned the screen on (didn't unlock), and unplugged. Reset CPU Spy and went in to work. Checked it 15 minutes later - no sleep.

It's working for me.

lol i didnt see that if you are really worried about just have sprint give u a new one just go back to stock first!! also are you overclocking?
FYI, wifi tethering WILL cause battery temp to go up. Depending on how much data is transferred, it uses a lot of energy...cause it uses both 3G and wifi at same time.

Grab some marshmallows?
I'm trying to think but nothing happens.
122f is nothing, I beleive the phones internal cutoff is 150f. Even then 150f is still not hot enough to cause damage, thats just a point that any hotter then that there is a potential for damage.
Highest I've seen mine was 147f that was on a hot ass summer day sitting in my windshield mount, with gps, bluetooth, and netflix streaming.
If your phone constantly and easily triggers the internal temperature shut off, then yes exchange. Otherwise use your phone and don't worry about it.
I think I got my Celsius and Fahrenheit mixed up. I believe the internal cutoff is at 50c or 60c. Highest I've seen mine is 47C or somewhere in there, high 40s I know that. I've never triggered the automatic shutdown though. 122f is 50c though, which is hot, potential damage to the phone is minimal but the battery is a different story. Although I don't think the temperature our phone reports is the actual battery temp. I've seen mine read in 40c range, and my battery feels cool to the touch.
over heating
what kernal do you have installed and also this could be the problem if your over clocked you should try another kernal and stay somewhere around 1.5 is all you need anymore than that will cause problems like over heating and breaking wifi so on and so on

Obvious total noob here. I've read all the thunderbolt reference material here and have followed a couple of tutorials on how to root my thunderbolt, but I keep finding broken mirrors. I just keep finding dead ends. Can someone point me to a current root method for this device. My goal is to try the leaked ICS rom. Thanks.
The closest I got was with revolution.
It did see my device and I was on the last step but it seemed like my rom was not compatible. There was a nice video and followed all the steps.

Welcome to the rooted club! I just joined this week myself.
I hadn't seen the all in one tool but I think I'll snag it. Revolutionary worked great for me. The only thing I had to do was temp root since I was running the .19 ROM. It was smooth sailing after that.
I'm running SkyRaider 1.3 now. I'll probably flash to ICS next month after playing with SR for a bit.
What has SR been like for you?
Sent from my ThunderBolt using xda app-developers app
So far I'm digging it. It's been considerably faster and seemingly more reliable than stock. The past two years have been hateful and I wish I would have rooted a long time ago.
I'm still trying to figure out what things have changed (like what new options I have and where to find some things) but it's been a fairly easy ride. I did have to flash twice to get it to work but now it seems to be solid.

I just started using the thunderbolt and is this battery performance is terrible. I'm not going to make a full day at work. If you want to keep 4G on do you have to use a extended battery.

Sent from my ThunderBolt using xda app-developers app
Sounds like a battery. I typically charge overnight and I'm good from about 7-4. Then I charge on the 30 min drive home and I'm good until the nightly charge. I've never seen exceptional battery life even with JuiceDefender. Right now it's bad but not quite like yours. I was on a third-party battery, though. I just swapped to the HTC battery and I'll see how it is. I think I'm going to turn JD off as well to see how SkyRaider managers on its own.

This was typical for me.
I recommend turning off 4G. It's not really useful anyways unless you're trying to download something. Calibrate the battery also. Turn down your screen brightness and backlight timing. Also adjust how often accounts sync. Slow your CPU speeds.
You should be set after that.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
Yeah, I only use 4G if I'm doing file transfers or tethering. I need to look at underclocking. How often do you sync? I have a number of accounts that I check every 15 min. I could probably increase that to 30.

Some of these are apps you can change within the apps settings, such as Facebook. I usually sign on before it syncs anyways.

You need to realize the stock battery is only 1450. So very small for a 4g phone. I have found juice defender only made my wallet lighter. You might want to look in to an aosp ROM as it gives you better battery life. I personally disable auto sync and turn off GPS. Also while I am at work I disable data as SMS and MMS doesn't come over mobile data part. In the end some people carries more than one battery on them if they won't be in a place they can charge.

A bit slower than normal, but if coming to this rom fresh, it needs a few days to "settle"...
My math shows this:
89% - end charge
minus
46 %- start charge
= 43% charge
divided by 6 hours, = 7.16 % per hour.
Better than my build gets right now....with a stock battery...(using CM9 stable today).....
Watch it for a few more days and monitor the charge rate. I'm not ruling out a problem with battery either, but considering the fact that your last build was better, the battery should be fine.
But honestly, once the stats get built and the rom settles in, you will likely see an increase in charging rate, and a decrease in discharge time.
The symptoms your having are not uncommon after flashing a new build.
Also, have you verified your wireless connections ?..I.E.is the device attempting to access wifi, or roam on wireless bands ?
Often times this causes rapid battery drain....
Thats my .02 at the moment brother......g

Here is a solution: Get a new ROM because the ROM you have installed is over clocked too much so the voltage the phone gets from the battery is almost equivalent to the voltage of your charger. The charger has a voltage of 5, which means the phone has a voltage of now 4.7V

Anyone losing battery charge after reboot?

My girlfriend and I both have Notes that we bought at the same time and this week, both of our phones are showing weird battery behavior. She is running stock ICS, and I'm running Slimbean 4.2.2 and our phones reboot occasionally and lose the remaining battery power. Just now, I had 70%+ battery left, crash+reboot and now I'm at 1% instantly. It just started happening this week for both phones, which seems a little bit more than just a coincidence. Anyone know what's going on here?
How long have you guys had your notes? and has there been any sudden change to the weather either really hot or colder than normal lately?

If anything you're seeing battery stats issues, not actual battery charge.
how long have you had your notes? I had the same issue and if you've had your note since it was released is safe to say the batteries are going bad. I had the same erratic behavior and the moment I got a new battery it went away.

Just an update, I bought two new OEM batteries and so far both phones have been working fine. Physically comparing the old and new batteries, it's clearly visible that the old ones bulged out quite a bit and looked "puffy".
It is the dust accumulated inside the usb port that has caused a short circuit of those pins. The phone will lose battery very fast and weird things will happen. Use a fine toothbrush and rub the usb port to clean out those dust and the phone will be back to normal. This happens to my N7000 and this i717 before.
