You can download Ringdroid and do it . I edit my songs on my computer for my ringtones and use root explorer to use them as ringtones. Have to be rooted for Root explorer though but RingDroid will edit your songs for ringtones.

Thanks
Thanks alnova1 but i haven't rooted just yet, got my phone yesterday so I'm waiting to see if everythings ok before my 30 day window closes.. On my old Droid X all you had to do was long press on the song and it gave you the option of using it as a ringtone.. Why Samsung Why!! LOL

You don't have to be rooted for Ringdroid...its free and it will edit the songs that are on your phone and let you assign them as ringtones or notifications. Root Explorer you have to be rooted but I just use it because I like doing my editing from my computer.

Thanks again
Thanks downloading right now, thought Ringdroid only worked with root

No problem...goodluck

i guess its assumed you want to make ringtones? (from the replies)
otherwise, if you already have songs from CDs, just place them on your SD card just about anywhere

on a stock Note....
Play the song you want to use as a ringtone with the Stock Music Player.
As the song is playing.... hit menu.. choose Use as aRingtone.
It then adds it to your ringtone list..
good luck

I keep trying to use the external sd, but it isn't picking up the ringtones. It reads the notifications (but not same as ringtones). If I put the tones on the internal sdcard, then "Android system" lists those tones fine.
So how do I make the media scanner "add" ringtones found on/mnt/sdcard/external_sd instead of just those found on /mnt/sdcard?
I see the media scanner running each time a make a change, but they still never show up as choices.
I could dump them into internal memory and bypass the sd's, but that defeats the benefit/purpose of having them on the SD.
Any ideas?
UPDATE: I realized I had a .nomedia file in my dir on the SD. That allows the media scanner to ignore that dir, if you have a reason to do so. (which I did and had totally forgotten about!) I removed the file and the media scanner properly sees my ringers in any dir I put them on external_sd now.
D'Oh!

ADD RINGTONE to a new " stock Std" AT&T NOTE ....how to
Hello everyone:
I was horrofied few days ago when i got my NEW SHINEY note...impressive machine! ... and one of first things I wanted to do was ADD all my Music and Videos from my older SAMSUNG INFUSE....even b 4 root & unlock
I proceeded to XDA forum and read and read ... and downloaded all things that I needed.
Loaded up my new 64GB ext card and rebooted , loaded up all the 32GB data from the OLDER CARD ,,,, and was shocked HORROR !! , couldnt figure out HOW TO make a song as Ringtone (was easy peezy in Infuse). Found this thread - ummm and tried , and tried , didnt work !!
Proceeded to ROOT & Unlock ( like one guy here suggested) ,,,,, and STILL DIDNT WORK !! ,,, couldnt make one of those mp3 /mp4 as ringtone...
SO I thought; ok take a break ... proceeded to ADD MY CONTACT(s)... nearly 800+ of these (lol dont ask) .... and CREATED a few FAV on the 'phone' part aand thought , ok lets try and ASSIGN some files to one of these FAV pple.
just so happens this LADY called (my first call on new new phone) yelling @ me ........been callin for 2 hrs , no answer - calls going to VM ,, who u F*** now ............LMAO!!!
So I tell her the MY STORY (frustration that I cannt but her B*tin sound againt her name , and now I think its working !!!! .... and could see her thru the wires I swear!!..lol...
So then I go check FILE MANAGER ,,,,,,,,,,, and WALAH !!!
I see a MEDIA folder , and than the AUDIO and Ringtones folders
SO in short ...
1) assign a "ringtone" from contacts to anyone > jsut browse and pick the EEXTERNAL CARD or INTERNAL CARD ( where you music is) and NOTE will do the rest
2) than you can USE FILE MANAGER ......... and move other files you have or any RINGTONES you have ( i found even the iphone ringtones where on NOTE)
and you sweet ( you dont have to be 'rooted and or unlocked" ) to make CUSTOM RINGTONES work.............. and dont even need Ringdriod etc etc
Hope this helps someone !!!

[Help] Setting Ringtone

I currently have my ringtone mp3 file on the root folder of my SD card. It works fine with one really annoying problem.
When I am listening to my music, the shows up in the music player and plays.
Is there any way I can stop this without creating playlists every time I chance or add new songs? I like to just go into my music player and play all.
I have tried to look for the subdirectory where the stock ringtones are so I can just add it to that, but I have not had any luck.
Hopefully someone can help me solve this annoying issue. Thanks.

I kept opening that file and saw a file in there called notifications which only had a facebook notification tone. I put my ringtones there but it didn't work.
Since the forum was down yesterday, I googled my problem and found that you can just create a folder called "ringtones" (all lower case) and it worked.
But I am going to try to move that folder into the media folder so I can keep my sd card somewhat organized.
thanks for the help.
That's cool I was trying to tell you that but I guess I wasn't clear enough but at any rate you got it. So no big deal. Anyway no problem.

I tried just creating a folder named 'ringtones' and it didn't work for me. I then created a 'media' folder and put the 'ringtones' folder in it. It still didn't work. I turned the phone off and rebooted. Still can't find the ringtone.
BTW - the ringtone is a 'shortened' mp3 that I have used on several windows phones for years. I'm not hearing my phone ring cuz I don't recognize the ringtone!
Update:
I read somewhere else on this forum that someone had to remove and reinsert their battery to get the ringtones to work. I tried that. There was my ringtone -- however the phone had decided to give it the name 'track 30'. Have no idea where that would have come from...this was never downloaded as a track off an album and it did have it's own file name.
This is a new AT&T Aria (my first Android). So far I'm not sure I like it. it was much easier to browse the phone, load files, etc. with Windows Mobile/ActiveSync'. And I miss MyMobiler.

IMO comparing your experience on android to a windows phone doesn't really suit the perquisites for a comparison. It'd be like comparing your experience on windows 7 to the latest version of Ubuntu or some other Linux distro. Oh wait, Linux (android) vs windows mobile (windows) that's wut you're doing isn't it? Android is awesome in my opinion once you get used to it. And I came from a blackberry. Totally incomparable, but in the long run I love android so much more than BB.

It was good.
Thanks for that but i wanted to use my phones full music.I found a way to do it- I created a folder on my sd card in the following order sd/media/audi/notifications and copied/moved the music to the notifications folder and now when i go to sound settings i can choose them from there.
I think that's a good enough solution for now.
wow...thts great..
i think it searches all folders with name "notifications"...
then it probably works for "ringtones" too...
thanks for sharing your method...

It does something similar to that but there is an even better app i found in the market called rings extended. It's not an app but just edits itself into the system and prompts you to use it instead of the android ringer system.
Now i can select any music from anywhere on my sd card-(it shows you all the mp3 files from your sd card and you just pick your tone.AM NOW SORTED WITH THIS ISSUE SO FAR.
remember to hit the thanks button IF I/ANYONE HELPS YOU

Changing Rigtones

Hi iam using 2.3.4. stock rom, haven't rooted yet. Is there a way to use a song mp3 ect., and use it as my ringtone? Thanks.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
You can download an app from the market, just search ringtone maker. It'll allow you to cut your mp3 and save it as a ringtone.
I use Myxer, it works pretty well.
get an external sd card. after you put it in your phone, create two folders on it - one name Ringtones, and one named Notifications.
put any mp3 in the ringtone folder, and/or any sound file on the notifications folder and they will show up in the list when you try to change them on the phone.
I do this so that when I flash different roms I can just take out the sd card and use the tones on the next rom I flash.
(I think you can create the folders on the internal sd card and it would work the same way but then if you flashed any rom it may wipe them)

This maybe isn't useful to you, but I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm running CM10 FXP133 on my Xperia Ray. Wrote a post a bout it here.
So I guess we're both equally desperate. Anybody please help!
/Daniel
Not sure if this is any good (I don't have time to try it out right now), but I found this.
/Daniel
edit: Nope. Sorry. Didn't work. Crap.
Looks like its a problem with the latest nightly.. it was working fine last release...
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I partially solved my problem. Something had put a .nomedia file in /sdcard, which quite naturally led to problems. I removed the file and did a new scan and now I got photos in the gallery again. Apollo is still empty though, so I'm kinda pulling my hair here. Done the obvious stuff (reboots, clearing cache, purging app data).
/Daniel
Ha! Found the rest of the solution. Seems the media scanner doesn't scan all folders anymore but just some (found out about it in this post). I moved some of my music to /sdcard/downloads, run a scan and suddenly it's there in Apollo.
Oh, and the .nomedia in sdcard root appeared again. No idea where it comes from, but it seems like a good idea to check for it and delete it once in a while. Strange things happen...
Oh. And sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread. I hope some of my mumbling is useful to you
/Daniel
I reflashed rom again, and now in gallery and apollo, media is showing.
Maybe it's a problem with Rom Manager, because that pushed .nomedia files in wrong folders.

on galaxy nexus, paranoid android 1.99:
after using Rescan Media Root https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot
there's a folder in DCIM called 100ANDRO.
put the music files in there and stock player detects them
put pictures in DCIM>Camera and gallery finds them.

Similar thing happened to me on CM9, Xperia mini. I deleted the .nomedia file and cleared the app data on music players and things are fine now.
My status on this one right now is that scanning mostly works. It refuses to scan some directories though. If I move all my music to /sdcard/music it's scanned, but in /sdcard/subsonic/music where it's always been before it's not. The only big problem with this is that for example /sdcard/ringtones is not scanned. So according to the system I no longer have any custom ringtones. This gotta be a bug, right?
/Daniel
Maybe you could try another music app like winamp. Because there you can do a manually media scan and as far as I know you can choose the folder where it should scan manually, too. Maybe give it a shot

at first i couldn't find my ringtones, put one in sd/ringtones and in the system/media/audio//ringtones
in doing all this i ran SDrescan and rescan media root multiple times.
now i've got two of the same showing up.
one thing the messed me up is that the ringtone filename is not used on the menu.
instead, the ringtone menu is pulling the metadata to tile it.
so I've got my filename 'ringtone.mp3' but it show up in the menu as 'song'

Ok. I also ended up putting my ringtones in /system/media/audio//ringtones which solves my problems. The media scanner still doesn't want to have anything with the ones in /sdcard/ringtones to do. Guess the media service will need some polishing before CM10 is released

[GUIDE] Add ringtones, notifications, alarms on AXON 7 root / non-root

As the A7 is a bit stubborn on putting custom ringtones to be notified in the 'ringtone' department of your phone instead of showing them under the 'global' tab MUSIC, i did some testing to put custom ringtones, notifications and alarms on my A7 properly (root necessary).
non-root :
Perhaps you noticed already putting a ringtone in your phones storage or sd-card makes it only visible in the general 'music' tab(as far as i know). To surch your ringtone out of your 1000 music files had to make you convert the name of your ringtone adding a # symbol or something else to find it between the mass...
In fact when you put f.e. a ringtone in Ringtones folder of your internal storage it makes the ringtone visible in BLUE under your 'music' tab.
When you add a ringtone under a folder like ringtones you created on your SD card it makes the ringtone visible in BLACK under your 'music' tab.
rooted :
For me this was not an option to 'search' my ringstones and other stuff under a general music tab. Instead i wanted them to be visible on the right place as it should be. As you know you have to be rooted to put ringtones (...) in system/media/audio/ringtones...BUT as i never had to put ringtones in SYSTEM before this time there was a little problem : in SYSTEM they did play in my explorer but they didn't play when i had to select them under the 'ringtone' tab when f.e. selecting a specific ringtone for your phone. They just gave a 'faulty' tone....
It took me a while before i saw that all the A7 files under ringtones (e.o) are rw-r-r- and mine were rw-rw-:cyclops:
On my other phones this never gave me a problem because i could just put any ringtones in a folder of my sd-card. Here it's different and not-user-friendly.
So, solution is very obvious, just use Root Explorer and change permissions of your ringtones to rw-r-r
You can select them all togheter and change them. (In Solid explorer f.e. you can only change one at a time. Therefore i recommend Root Explorer.)
After that they are visible and playable under 'ringtones' tab (...)
I just wanted to share this for rooted (and non-rooted) users when they encounter some problems to import ringtones (...) in system
I have another solution (non-root).
1. record something in the built-in recorder app
2. convert your ringtone in the same audio format (wav) using something like fre:ac (free audio converter)
3. replace the recorded file in internal storage/records with your ringtone
4. use the recorder app to rename the file, you can test your replaced file here
5. select your ringtone in settings in the recording tab
No need for the above.
Just drop the mp3 into the internal storage/records folder. It'll show up under the recordings tab in the selector.

Of course you can mate :silly:
But, some people, like me, don't want them.to show up in records folder. Ringtones are supposed to be in the right folder, like with other phones, and not under record folder. But if you're happy with this that's OK :good:

I can honestly count on one finger how many times I've recorded something on a phone within the last year. So records folder is good enough for now for custom media sounds. Messing with the /system will cause issues when doing a firmware update. In fact, if you ever need to reflash the /system, anything you've put in it will be gone. This way /system stays intact.
Maybe they'll get this sorted in the next update.

Glad you mentioned it : maybe they'll get this...
I hope so but I don't think so. It's just the way ZTE thinks....
Of course you can as for now put your rings and other stuff in records but that's not the way it should be. Records are records, ringtones are...
As for messing up a phone when you put some rings etc in your system is a little bit exaggerated no That's just the way I like it. To exploit my phone.
And when I should loose my ringtones when reflashing a rom of some kind, I can put those back in a minute. Just import my favorites from Google Drive and basta. 1minute of work.
But... as you mentioned it : hope they will fix this...
