[Q] Why won't Pandora work? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I have just installed Pandora on my phone running Turkbey v37SE and it will open but not load any of the stations. Admittedly, I have removed and disabled many apps, services and features on this ROM to get things close to the belt, but I'm not sure what I did to keep Pandora from working. I had all DRM stuff frozen, but upon defrosting it still wouldn't work. My wife's phone has rooted stock 2.3.4 and Pandora works great. I've uninstalled and re-installed a few times to no avail.
Anybody recognize this situation? I could Nandroid back to another ROM and give it a go, but I thought I'd tap into the Knowledge Base of XDA first.
Thanks for any insight you can give.

[Q] Google App Framework and Music randomly FC'ing

I have wiped and flashed Gingerbread quite a few times. HKTW, then kennethpenn's Beta 4, then Beta 4 with faux123's custom kernel.
Something happened between the flashing and backup/restore through Titanium Backup. Google Music (from the market) runs painfully laggy when it is running in the foreground. What's weird is that I see the FC message pop up for it randomly every 5 minutes, even when I haven't run it yet. (I'm guessing an event is triggering its start)
Anyways. I did disable some things from triggering using Autostarts. Maybe I should set them back.
Anyways, what's even more weird is that once I uninstall Music, another FC, even more annoying, for some Google app framework pops up. (I forget, too lazy) This FC shows up with almost any app at anytime. And, I can neither install nor uninstall apps using the market (the market actual FCs upon trying to do so). Thank God I had a backup of Google Music, but I had to return to its FC problem.
I am probably going to reflash and be careful what I restore, but I'm just wondering...what happened? I'm into IT and development, so I can take what you throw at me.
I'm just not developing for Linux, including Android, yet. I'm mainly into scripting languages right now, but I can learn others fairly easily. Why am I talking about this? xD
Anyways, just a bit curious if anybody knows. I don't exactly know most of the processes that run in the background on Android.

Any success uninstalling or freezing stock bloat?

If it matters, mine is a P509 - my question is whether any of you have found, short of custom ROM, a way to remove bloat apps, or freeze them effectively, given a stock LG ROM? I run kernel 2.6.32.9 and it is very stable. just wanting to free up cycles and memory
the reason I can't get along with custom ROM is the lack of wifi calling [that is, the way it is supposed to work, via T-mo]
Will Titanium Pro do this? any nasty side effects?
root - delete the apps.
TiBackup - freeze or delete.
All of these work. I just test-searched this subforum for remove bloatware and was rewarded with an abundance of information. This also contains info on the likeliest followup question, "what apps can I remove?".
FWIW, I find greatest stability and battery life on a sanitized stock ROM but run CM7 on principle. I use Google Voice + Groove IP for my wifi calling needs. Works fine and doesn't eat TMO voice mins.
I just go to system/app and delete the apps or "bloatware" that you dont need, titanium backup does the same but you have the option to freeze. If you want to get rid of it quick and easy just go to system/app and delete the app you want gone. Be careful what you delete, stay away from system apps that your phone will need. I would make a backup first before you start deleting just to be safe hope this helps
you are my man! i use the same plan with T-mo - do everything I can on wifi, keep data turned off 90% of the time, send pics via GoSMS Pro...
Thank you both, fratermus and 'droid311 for the help.
If you don't mind let me list a few that I ASSUME I can safely remove - if you see something dangerous pls let me know
- Drivesmart
- Telenav
- thinkfree office
- visual voicemail
- Voice Search
- web2go home
- Pacman demo [good grief]
- places
- latitude
- fm radio [never worked]
- dinerdash
- doodle
ok fire away
btw - re: titanium does the freeware version do the trick or the upgrade?
I'll have a look at system/root - not an expert su by any means

OK, friends I got it rolling now. handful of that stuff uninstalled.
could I bug you for just a couple of specifics?
- Keyboards: I have been running the Gingerbread keybd for awhile and like it well enough - the handset still has he original keyboard installed. is it safe to uninstall/remove that or is it involved with the core ROM?
- Similarly, I seem to have three Messaging things stacked: there is the original which I guess was on the handset from the edge: there is an Update to the stock Messaging app, then there is GoSMS Pro which is what I actually use. Is it safe to uninstall the other/stock messaging apps?
- Maps [latitude] is a pig - it loads three modules at powerup and I never even use it [my eyes and that screen with ddetailed maps,, no worky well]. safe to remove? answer seems to be yes.
that's all. I am a happy camper
Are you running cm7?
-You would probaly get a foreclose if you delete it, I would go into play store (android market) and find the keyboard you want, download it and push it to system/app then delete the old gingerbread key board.
-I wouldnt move/delete the stock messaging apps because I think (not positive) but gosms pro would need your stock messaging app to run off of.
-yes maps can be safe to remove
-Also reading your list of your bloat ware, they all can be deleted safely with no harm
thank you so much!
no, i'm running 2.2 LG rom and it is so stable I am ok to stay here, especially because WIFI calling works like butter... excellent.
uninstalled maps, finally - nothing else would stop it from loading up. no harm done, as you indicated.
all this has managed to free up about 35% of the meager ROM.
I guess this is about as good as it gets if one retains wifi calling, gmail/voice, and basic decent apps like a good media player, maps [that is, 3rd party], sms/mms, memos, calendar, reminders, notifier[missed message flasher the only one I have found that actually works]
No problem man, make sure you always backup

[Q] Restore S Memo

I removed a bunch of bloat apps with Titanium and wanted to restore S Memo to try out S Voice a little more and discovered that the restore doesn't work. It opens but immediately FCs. All the other bloat apps install back just fine. I even pasted in SMemo.apk,SMemo.odex,SMemoProvider.apk,SMemoProvider.odex from an S3 rom dump and no go. Any ideas? It isn't incredibly important but still driving me a bit nuts.
To clarify, I'm trying to see if anyone knows the full dependencies for this app. I have searched high and low on xda and others and this app is specifically problematic but it SHOULD work when on stock with TW.
I was also trying to work this out the other day. There are some guides on de-odexing the S memo app which, thinking about it, might hint at it's dependencies.

Phone Reboots When Updating Apps in Play Store

Hello again.
I'm experiencing a new problem with my phone that is becoming very aggravating because it seemingly occurred when I did nothing unusual or risky with my phone. Every time I update an app in the google play store, my phone locks up and will reboot itself. Sometimes it will remain frozen until I hold down the power button myself. This problem also happens when uninstalling apps and installing apps, but it doesn't do it regularly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But the phone will always freeze when updating apps. Like I said, I have done nothing risky with the phone. I haven't installed or removed any apps that require superuser access. I haven't downloaded anything to my phone. All I have done is install a few apps here and there from the store, evaluate if I like them or not, and decide if I want to keep them. Recently I haven't been keeping new ones, so I promptly remove them. Out of nowhere this problem shows up when I tried to install another app (thought maybe the app caused it so I got rid of it), and now the updates freeze my phone.
The apps successfully update each time, but immediately after the process finishes, the phone locks up. After rebooting, the updates are saved and the apps aren't corrupt or anything. What can be causing this to happen? Everything on my phone was working flawlessly, and now this problem is seriously hindering the usability of my phone and I don't understand what went wrong.
My phone is the Virgin Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 4G SPH-D710. It is rooted and is running the stock ROM.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,
Have you tried clearing the cache for Google Play Store in Application manager? Try this first! You could also try (I assume you also have a working CWM recovery or similar?) wiping cache and dalvik in recovery!

I've already wiped the cache, data, and even tried uninstalling updates for Google Play and Google Play services. Made no difference.
As for dalvik, I'm not sure what that means. Any pointers would be helpful!

The dalvik cache will probably be under Advanced in Recovery
zj
I don't have CWM recovery. Sorry I didn't know what you meant when you asked that.
Sorry if bumping or double posting isn't allowed, but I wanted to update this thread.
I think I may have solved the issue. Makes no sense as to why it happened or how it's even related to what I did. I racked my brain for the most recent things I installed on my phone and the only app that came to mind was Cut the Rope. It was the last thing I could remember that installed fine. I removed it and nothing locked up. Then I tried updating one of my apps and presto. No freeze or reboot. Then I installed an app from the play store and it worked perfectly. Did it multiple times with no error. I feel like Android is so temperamental that if I even look at it wrong something will break. -_- I don't know. Maybe being rooted has something to do with it, but my guts don't want to believe it.
I'll put "solved" in the title once I keep using my phone and make sure it's working correctly. If so, I suppose the moral to this problem is just uninstall anything recent from your phone if you experience similar issues. Wish I could know the technical cause though.

Can I Prevent Bloatware From Installing?

I've spent a month with KK on 2 phones, and ultimately contacted Verizon after my work phone left me unable to email, and then died only 3 hours after unplugging the charger.
I went through the exercise of doing a factory reset (which did not fix any of the issues, surprise surprise) and Verizon agreed to send me a replacement phone.
But what I did notice is this:
On both phones, after doing a factory reset, most of the bloatware was *not* on the phone until I gave it my gmail address... then they began downloading (isis, nfl, allshare, print services, audible, and on and on.)
I re-reset, rebooted, and did NOT give my gmail (or any other email) and the downloads did not start. After a few hours, I gave it my gmail, and the downloads started. And I would like to point out... these downloads are NOT restoring or synching any of my play store apps, these are all of the junk that were pre-installed when I got the phones (for example - nfl live, or nfl direct, or whatever it is called is NOT on the phone until after it is downloaded and installed automatically.)
So today I have a new Galaxy S4 with JellyBean 4.3 (I545VRUEMK2)
After activating it, it started downloading a "software update", KK I presume.
I didn't let it finish; I restarted the phone and re-factory reset it, and immediately turned off wifi.
I've not given it my gmail, but had to give it my work email (exchange).
So far, no updates... It is just a vanilla system with nothing more than my work email (which is working fine.)
Is there any way that I can, at this point, prevent it updating or installing all of the Verizon garbage?
I know the knee-jerk answer will be "root it" but I want to avoid that if possible... this is my employer's phone, and I don't want that to be an issue if there are any problems with the phone.
If it's owned by your employer why do you care about bloatware?

Multiple reasons... I would like to be able to have a phone that works properly, without a lot of garbage getting in the way.
Secondly, because my personal phone is being replaced as well, and I would like to keep it running as smooth as possible as well.
You can disable most of the apps under settings. And they are already present on the phone, they are simply being upgraded to newer versions when you enter your Google account information.

(About your personal phone)
Since you are still running JB you should be able to root. Once rooted, you can simply uninstall the bloatware with SDX software romoval app. It is NOT in the google play market, but if you google it you should be able to find it. What I do is "freeze" the app with Titanium Backup Pro. Once frozen, the apps do not load nor update. Freezing gives you the ability to update the phone to the new FW when the time comes. Just unfreeze all apps, update, then freeze them again. Downside is that NC5 still has NO native root. So, you could just keep it JB instead of upgrading to KK and losing root. There are other options out there for upgrading to 4.4.2 and keeping root, but if you are looking for simplicity, just keep it JB. Lastly, VooDoo OTA root keeper works MOST of the time. However, with 4.4.3, you still lose root.
I am sure there is a list of apps somewhere in the S4 forums for you so you know what to freeze. From my experience, I froze all verizion apps minus "My Verizion Mobile", all bloatware like Isis, NFL, IMDB, ect., and even SDM(the app that controls OTA updates). Hope this helps.
