[Q] I cant root HTC eris - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I asked this in the main forum Q&A then i found this Eris sub forum. My son has tried to root his Eris for 2 days,He has tried the htc eris 1 click app from the market, the unrevoked method, and the eris root for dummies. It says rooted after everything he has tried but if you try to use a program like titanium backup it says no root access and root checker say it isn't rooted any help??

afaik all 3 of those methods (well, 1-click and dummies for sure) do not modify anything in the normal ROM at all - they only install a custom recovery.
That's why you are seeing the result you do when trying to use root-aware tools in the normal OS - it hasn't been altered even one bit. What is meant by "rooted" in this case is that you have gained privileges to alter the phone (via the custom recovery) - not that the "su" native binary or the "SuperUser.apk" (app) has been installed on your phone.
The "Eris Root for Dummies" thread over on AF is quite explicit about this - you just need to read the first four or five posts carefully. It's got pictures and everything.
By booting the custom recovery, you can:
1) Back up your current ROM (highly recommended before you do anything else).
2) Wipe (data/factory reset) and flash a new ROM, or
3) Perform other customizations
Normally, if you were only going to add the "su" binary and the "SuperUser.apk" app to the existing ROM (I suppose *that* is what you thought was meant by "rooted"), you could do this by flashing the "engtools3.zip" file in the custom recovery.
There is a current thread over in the all things root subsection of AF that has a link to the "engtools3.zip" file. I'll let you find it - I'm feeling a bit lazy right about now.
bftb0

The 1-click app puts a zip file on your SD card that you can flash from Recovery that gives you the SU app and support files that you need in order to get root level access in the stock ROM. I still suggest installing either xtrSENSE or 666 Sense to get an overclocked kernel (and xtrSENSE adds a lot of extra storage space for third party apps.) Both of these you *should* be able to flash over stock without wiping data, so it will keep your settings and apps that you have already installed, though I would do a Nandroid backup first anyway. (If you read the fourth post in the Dummies thread it will walk you through the steps on Nandroid backup and flashing a zip file - just ignore the wipe step if you flash the rootme.zip file or the two sense custom ROMs.)

I understand it now.Thank you very much.

[Q] New to Rooting - Trying to Get Froyo

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the Eris. I've had it for a few months, but this is the first "in-depth" thing I've done with it.
I've decided to take the plunge and root the phone. I'm going to use the on-screen method.
My question is this: What do I need to do to prepare? I've got all my apps backed up to the SD card, and the phone is charging right now.
Any suggestions as to what ROM to use? Or what I need to get the Froyo update, etc?
I'm new, so I'm browsing and learning, but any information you guys have would be great. Thanks in advance.
If you want a Froyo rom, that is what you'll need to download. There are about a half dozen in the development section and all mention "Froyo" in the title. Read the entire thread and it's not a bad idea to read some comments. If the developer says you need the google apps aka gapps zip, get it too. Put both files (or only one if gapps isn't needed) on the root (not in any folders) of your sd. Once you're rooted you should enter recovery by powering off, then boot holding power and vol up (rooting instructions may take you there anyway). Youll see options to reboot, ms toggle, backup/restore, etc. Go to back up/restore and create a nandroid by following the prompts. Press vol down until you return to the home screen, then go to wipe. Wipe data/factory reset and wipe dalvik cache. Vol down back to the main screen and flash the new rom and gapps (if needed). ENJOY. Note: Read all instructions thoroughly before rooting. If any instructions i've listed are different then those listed in the official instructions, follow them first. Once you're rooted and begin changing roms frequently you need to always make a nandroid of the current rom your own (in case you dont like the new one or have problems flashing it), wipe data and dalvik (ext partition too if your sd card is partitioned and you're using a rom which allows apps2sd via a partitioned sd card - froyo currently does not), and backup your apps/settings via the app of your choice before flashing. If your upgrading your current rom you usually wont have to do a wipe (the developer will indicate it in the instructions).
It's a good idea to back up your apps before flashing new roms. Titanium is my favorite app but its for root only. Search the market. You can probably find an app to use before you root.

Wow, thanks for getting back to me with such detail. Very, very much appreciated. It turns out however, that I won't be able to do this.
I checked out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228
I found that I had release keys under my build number, which indicates is the 2.1 leak - which really sucks, because I got the update OTA... why would they send out a leaked platform? That sucks
Ah well, thanks very much for your help. I'm going to take a look at my brothers phone, and see if we can root that. Thanks
You CAN root ANY eris now. Do a little more research.

my advice would be to save yourself the hadache and just dl the 1 click root app. soo worth it plus it goes to a good cause...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228

Root For Telus Fascinate Froyo Leak

I used SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
And it worked for rooting my TELUS Fasinate with the JL3 Froyo leak! Worked like a charm! Thanks to CLShortFuse!
Gonna try right now...wish me luck!
EDIT! WORKS!!!! I HAVE SU!! Didn't do anything exect follow the steps on the video! Click start and your phone will be rooted!
I wonder if we need to install busybox? I'll search the one-click thread and see if we need it.
Hmmm...Dave are you having any problems with root access? I installed rom manager and clockwork, but it won't boot into custom recovery, it says "signature verification failed", so no clockwork, also, I have root explorer, and I moved a bunch of bloat to a junk folder on the internal sd card, but they are still in the system/app folder! Even if i choose delete, root explorer will delete the app but as soon as you refresh the folder they are still there...
EDIT: Figured out ROOT EXPLORER problem, just had to close and restart ROOT EXPLORER, and now my bloat is moved to a junk folder in the sd card!! ALso I was able to disable the stupid boot and shutdown sounds!

It's nothing to do with the Root. Froyo requires a signed .zip or it won't install. We need the stock kernel modded!
I was wondering if it's possible when we have the stock kernel to flash the CM one, install CWR, then flash the stock one back. Would that keep root and CWR working?

I don't think that would work, the stock kernel once flashed overtop of the modded kernel would reset the setting back to "no unsigned zips" so then CWR would not work, well technically it works but we can't get there.
We simply (well, on second thought, maybe not so simply) need to mod the stock kernel, then we can have a custom recovery and even maybe OC/UV with set CPU (if someone can mod the stock kernel) Thanks again Dave, 2.2 is working great, and with root access now I have no bloat, no stupid boot sounds, and the phone fast and stable and also looks great with Launcher pro and beautiful widgets.
My Desire is going on ebay pretty soon...
PS - the genie widget that would FC was for 2.1, I found a genie widget that was for 2.2 and works great.
This is awesome! Adfree working now with the full javascript capabilities of froyo, very, very nice work everyone! I had a few issues at first because I was messing around with other various root methods. After a fresh flash of stock 2.2 thru odin, and rooting first thing using one-click method above, fixed all my issues. I noticed crazy keyboard lag after rooting but a quick reset of the device fixed that. Finally this device is at the level I had in mind when I bought it! We just need to oc/uv the stock kernel now and judging by the uv capabilities in other galaxy s handsets I think we have ourselves a winner!!!!!!
I'm still learning so this might be a dumb question.....
I've read a few how tos on signing the update.zip. can't I just take the file cwr makes and sign it?

Hell it's worth a shot, right? Be careful, it would seem nothing really bad can happen, but even if it does, you have the files to flash back to stock anyways.

CM7 question

sorry if this is a newbish question... but I wanted to know what I needed to actually get done when I get my tablet, and put CM7 on it... my question is is I put CM7 on via the restore backup method will CWM be installed internally as well... or will i need to flash that also?
IF YOU WANT TO GO STRAIGHT TO CM7:
- First you need to install CWM using the sdcard method by Goncezilla because for sure you will get your tablet with 1.4.1 firmware which won't let you sideload apps.
- Second download the CM7 ROM to your computer, uncompress it and put the NTCM7 in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup folder, NOTE that if you don't have the /clockworkmod/backup folder in your SDcard then create it (CASE SENSITIVE).
- Boot into CMW> backup & restore> restore and pick up the NTCM7 folder
- Wipe data and advanced> wipe dalvik cache.
- Reboot, enjoy!
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO STRAIGHT TO CM7:
ok pfff you have many options with this one my advice is go here and pick 1 of the 2 1.4.0 ROM's in the Rom's section and use the same sdcard method to install CWM and flash it as restore (same as CM7) as they are not flashable zips.

I'm running the internal install, it works very well and is super easy to install.
It's a fairly straightforward process and now that most of stuff needed is available, it shouldn't be terribly time-consuming for you. It didn't take me too long.
Here's how I did it (for an internal installation):
1. Enable Sideloading Apps and Root the Device. (Preferably on a factory-reset Nook Tablet.)
You can look around the Nook Tablet Development forum here for tutorials on how to sideload apps and then root the device, but it's a fairly easy process. Once it's rooted and you can sideload apps, you can move on to the next step.
2. Flash Clockwork Recovery onto your Nook Tablet.
I used this super-easy app by Indirect to install CWM (ClockworkMod Recovery) onto my Nook Tab. It's literally one button press and you're good to go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630
3. Follow Celtic's instructions here to install CyanogenMod 7 on the device.
Because of a serious problem with the SD-booting version of CM7 for Nook Tabs and some possible problems with the Internal install (I've had none with the internal version aside from some typical beta-quality bugs) Celtic took the links to the install files down until he and his fellow NT devs get the more serious issues fixed. Once the dangerous bugs are patched, however, you should be able to install rather painlessly using the instructions in Celtic's thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
Like I said, it was a virtually painless process for me. Totally worth it too, once the dangerous bugs are fixed.

It is better you wait until new fixes anyway if you install now you will have to download again and do the whole process of apps restoration.

How to return to 1.40 unrooted ?
At some point I will install cm7 internally, but how would you go back to stock 14.0 out of the box if you needed to ? Thanks
If I were needing to go back to stock I would use the acclaim_update.zip method posted in the dev section.

[Q] Changing root

I have rooted my Nook Tablet at around Christmas, but am thinking about switching the root to CM7. Do I have to go back to factory setting and remove the old root or will CM7 root over the old root method?
Thanks.
Okay.
First things first. Read this thread
Now, I'll clear it up here, but you should really read that thread as well. You do not "change root." The fact that your tablet is rooted simply means that on your current version of Android (the stock B&N version by the sound of it) you have root access. Newer "root methods" simply have made it easier to attain root access.
What you now want to do, by indicating that you want cm7, is install a custom rom. This means you will be completely overwriting the stock B&N OS. You will have root access with this rom as most custom roms come with the ability to have root access to the file system.
The steps you should take are:
1. Find and download the cm7 zip file (I think the link may be broken in the rom's thread. Have a look around for it. Make sure you do not download any cm7 zip files for the Nook Color). You'll also want to find and download the cm7 gapps files if you want the play store and other google apps.
2. Download indirect's app to flash recovery, install it and flash clockworkmod recovery.
3. Boot into clockworkmod recovery and make a backup.
4. Seriously make a backup.
5. Did you make a backup? Cause you should have.
6. Select "install from zip" and find the cm7 zip file you downloaded. Do this again for the gapps zip file.
7. Wipe data/factory reset.
8. Reboot system and you'll be booting into cm7. The stock B&N OS will be gone.
If you don't like it, simply boot into clockworkmod recovery again and restore the backup you made (you made a backup right?).
Finally, please read the thread I linked. You should have a firm understanding of everything it says before you tinker with this stuff.
Thanks for the quick and detailed response. I've read your linked post and I'll look into how to back up my Nook Tablet and research a bit more before attempting this.
Currently, I'm rooted (fastboot style) but have had a several problems after turning on the Nook. Occasionally, when I turn on the Nook and get the launcher choice menu, the menu is rapidly flashing and I'm unable to make a choice and must reboot. This is why I'm thinking about starting over with a different root method. Other than the occasional startup problems it works fine.
Thanks again!

[Q] removing bloatware

I have a Sprint device, rooted, bootloader is unlocked with s-off and unsecured kernel. I am not really wanting to flash a new Rom quite yet, so I'm stock.
I cannot get root explorer to fully remove bloatware. It all returns after reboot.
Is there an easy way to get it working properly or am I going to have to pull the unwanted files using adb?
TiBa?
sent from my humongous VZW HTC ONE MAX
I dont understand why root explorer wont work. Ive used it many times. If you actually delete something, its not magically reappearing.
Oh but it is magically reappearing. I've removed bloatware at least 6 times and as soon as I reboot it's all back

I remember reading at some point that they lock stock Roms somehow, and the r/w option doesn't do any good.
I've tried searching, but any combination of words pulls way to many threads.
I've never had this problem before, I've always gone with a custom Rom immediately after purchase.
Believe you have to flash the unsecure kernel to get system to allow changes.
I hoped that would work, but it didn't help. I was reading the one forums, they made an app that enables it on that phone. I tried it, didn't work.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.timos.htconerw
I'm guessing this is also why my damn ad blocker has been making me angry as well.
You do have your bootloader unlocked using scotty1223 method in general *or htcdev* right?
*EDIT: Verify busybox is installed and working properly
I finally got it off of mine by using custom kernel and going s-off then using es file explorer mounted to the root/system on half and titanium backup on the rest. Titanium backup is easier especially if you want to make backups of them all. I personally didn't so I just deleted them all but of course I made a nandroid backup before doing all of this just in case something went awry.

You have to flash insecure kernel s off busybox
