My C10K Grey - so far so good - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I was going to wait for TF700 but not really sure how long is the wait.
SO..
Just received my Prime from Bestbuy.ca on Friday
Updated to .14
Prime not rooted yet.
Light bleed yes.. minor only.. visible on boot. But on normal use of the tablet and watching movie not noticeable.
Wifi Range is good. Even from 10 feet no issue. I still have the linksys WRT54G router. I can afford a Prime but not upgrade to a Router N. lol
GPS is good. The test screenshot is from outdoor. Sorry I don't test indoor and Outside GPS makes sense than indoor GPS. Why would I want to use GPS inside my house or in a building. Anywho i got the tablet not for GPS purpose. I just ran the test just for show.
Tether is good. Cell phone Tether via wifi is good. Cell Phone Bluetooth Wifi is good. Yes also watching streamed videos on tether. Only lag if I use forward and rewind. Pause is ok it resumes fine. Tether is using Iphone via wireless or Bluetooth.
VPN connection and 2X is good. I use a lot for work.
Email exchange is good. Synch fine.
Watching movie is good and Music. Impressed on the speakers.
I will try Netflix soon.
Polaris Office its ok.
Google Talk works well.
NOW:
I just need a good case. There are some good case in Amazon but they do not ship to Canada.
Thinking about Ghost Armor - but to heavy for my wallet to expense.
After all good things came out of this Prime. I'm thinking I'll keep it (But I still have 27days to return it).
I'm thinking if I should get the keyboard dock.
I might just MOD another Brand's Dock for Prime.

Congrats on the new purchase! Personally I would highly recommend the keyboard dock, particularly if you will be using it for work stuff. I totally replaced my laptop with the Prime and things like remote desktop use is far better with the dock. Not to even mention the extra battery, expansion.

Great I'm glad you're enjoying your Prime but 10 ft is not an appropriate test for WiFi performance. ?he reason why I say this is because if you intend on using the Prime on the go, you may experience the same disappointments some of us are including the Prime's inability to see public networks within 25+ ft radius or very poor reception/speeds overall.
Play with a bit more in different scenarios and let us know.

Thank Barry - That's the other good point of having the dock. When I use 2X and also when I need to transfer a file to USB external in or out.

I actually tested the Wifi when I was outside the McDo parking lot.
I don't know how far that is because I'm not really sure where the router is located in McDo.
But 2 stores away is Starbucks.. It shows up in the Wifi as open connection with 1 bar.
I switched to that SB Network (still in McDo parking lot). After connecting to Starbucks connection drops and i'm back to McDo network again.
What I did not do is Forget McDo network and connect only to SB. I will try it again if the kids wants to go to McDo. lol
Yes. I do use the Prime on the go. But when I need to be connected on-line. I can either connect to open Wifi that's on range/available. If not in range.. I will use my iPhone to tether. Which I have no issue using tether with a smartphone and RDP to my work pc.

Whoa several questions...
First of all, really nice setup. The vehicle and electronics are so CLEAN. In the aesthetic and literal sense; love it.
What is the mount you use? Is it an internal GPS receiver similar to the one whose installation is detailed in the forums? Or did you pair it with a phone for the phones GPS?
Thanks! I just had the truck detailed today so it was a good time to take some photo's.
The mount was bought from www.buyincoins.com but you canget it a bit cheaper through overstock.com and should get to you a little faster. Buy in coins can take up to 5 weeks due to it's coming directly from China.
The GPS signal is provided by a bluetooth GPS receiver hat you can see sitting on the dash above the radio. You can find several discussed in a thread here. I paid like 40 bux delivered. I use BlueGPS and copilot live pro and it works very well.
This is a link to the GPS receiver I bought off E-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390317888228
what is the model number on the mount? How much did you pay for the mount?

When you get it and have it mounted with your G-tab in it, make sure to loosen the tightening screws before you try to adjust the positioning of your tablet. The pivot point between the bracket that holds the tablet and the mount itself is a bit weak and if you try to move the tablets position without loosening it first it will weaken that point. I tried to leave it somewhat loose but not tightened all the way down and still adjust it. Mine failed pretty quickly.
The reviews on this mount isnt that good.
Hows everyones mount holding up?

I've had 3 of a similar mount and 2 have broken in the same spot: The piece that holds the bracket and mount together. This is a high stress area and it really needs to be metal, not thin plastic. I'd say avoid this design unless it has a more sturdy design.
Geez, so you spent like $20 bucks on the app, ~$10 for the mount and another ~30 for the bluetooth gps receiver. 60 dollar value hm?
I use my phone as a wifi hotspot and use the app "tethergps", paid like 2 bucks. My gtab can get gps running off my phone while my gtab also charges my battery via USB.
Though you might have an advantage in case I don't get 3g coverage :-(
So I actually might consider your $60 value alternative.. or you can just get a regular gps receiver from garmin.. those devices are doing more and more than what they used to these days and coming in at a ~$120 price.

Well all of the apps were free. Well, sorta I would have much rather gone with a smart phone tether situation but I don't have a smart phone.

The tether situation isn't perfect. If you happen to use bluetooth headsets like I do when on the road, then WiFi Tethering wreaks havoc on the BT radio.
I have also used GPS Share to share my phone's GPS rather than using the BT GPS dongle I have ... that too runs into problems when I take a call.
And while a $60.00 Garmin might be cheaper, it doesn't have a 10" screen
Yes, I love the big screen GPS, and it places the tab is a good position to use it to surf or utilise the other apps. But the mount has become problematic. I can't find a mount that can handle the jostling and stress of the road. I'm going to try to reinforce the weak point so it can handle the movement.

[Q] Lapdock or tablet?

Hi!
I am currently living in China and I am travelling to Japan for 10 days as a backpacker, and I would like not to carry my heavy laptop.
I will need a computer or a tablet for the time being there, I want to check trains, hotels, maybe watch a movie at night, surf the internet, skype....
The question is I don't know what should I buy. As I said I am living in China so I could buy a cheap android tablet (60€/70€) a "good" tablet (ex: nook color) (140€) or the lapdock(around 80€).
I need long battery life, a good screen and not heavy, and please cheap! (althought I prefer to spend a bit more money if it's going to last longer)so do you think buying the lapdock will be better than buying the tablet? why?
Thank you!
That depends of you want what from your phone.
I recommend you to get a asus tablet, since it can be used with a physical keyboard, you can use like a notebook, while the atrix, may never get new updates, and stay with the bugs and issues it have now...without ICS, and it actually its a big deal for this phone...
Also, tablets have a better battery life than the lapdock
I know because i have both. ^^

Obrigado!Thanks for the answer!
But I can't spend more than 120€ in the new "toy". This is why I am asking if the lapdock is better than the 120 or 60€ tablet...
Also probably will get ICS with a custom rom...
How's the battery life in the lapdock? is it really 8 hours? I think 8 hours it is actually OK...

The battery is great. Yeah 8 is the life of the dock. I love it. I personally will never buy a tablet now. And it was way cheaper with ATT sale. Lol

I too have both, the Lapdock and a Transformer.
As much as I love my Asus Transformer, it can't be compared with the Lapdock in terms of size, weight and portability. The Lapdock is pretty light and it's battery really lasts a lot.
Also however cool the Transformer is, it lacks a real web browser which is a must for me.
Also I can do real Office work with OpenOffice and some graphic work with GIMP. And all this and also all Android stuff I usually like to do.

I would agree here. While I was abroad the lapdock was 95% of what I needed, even without hacking it. The battery life is great, I use it as a battery dock when I am just watching movies on the phone, there's the entertainment center for also watching videos, etc.
If you get the lapdock you're probably going to want a USB or Bluetooth mouse as the touchpad isn't all that great.

For people who would like to use the gps for car navigation ...

How do you place the tablet?
In the front car screen?
Dont you think thats too big and block your view?
Or you just lie it down on the front passenger seat? Then how do you see the screen? And thats dangerous!
Or will you mod your car, remove the car stereo, put the tablet there?
Or ask someone to hold it for you while you are driving?
Somehow, I must missed and overlooked the proper place to put this big tablet in a car for navigation. Hmmm ....
GPS isn't even working properly and you want to use it? Get a proper GPS navigation device, the Prime won't cut it.
I wouldn't dream about using a tablet as a GPS, and I don't think I could care less about the defect GPS in the TP thanks to that, but isn't this a rather wierd question.
A fast google search gives plenty of good answeres for safe tablet GPS usage:
http://www.google.se/search?ix=hcb&...w&biw=1920&bih=979&sei=hSEIT_33MIGMswajssiCDw
I can understand people who wants to use it for GPS, you should to!

Exactly. It's either me driving and my wife navigating or the opposite. And it's really much more comfortable (and safer) than doing it myself with a 4 inches screen... Navfree and Navit work actually very well on my old Transformer...
Dude, can you not get a tablet mount for your windscreen? pretty sure youtube can provide videos for that.
That's what I intend to do...
Just buy a bluetooth gps and place it in the front of the window so it always get good signal, i know i will.
in fact a mount would look super cool if you had augmented reality running at the same time.
I hope there is no sarcasm to this thread. For just because you do not have a use for a GPS on a tablet doesn't mean it is the same for others.
im actually being genuine...one of the reasons i would buy android over apple is due to the navigation app. its got me out of a few sticky situations.
a tablet running gps or augmented reality via a tethered mobile (i figure thats how you would do it) whilst mounted to my windscreen would be awesome in my opinion.
dont be paranoid.
I'm going to get a headrest mount for my work truck b/c my middle console is the seat flipped down and it has a headrest. It will be the perfect length with my arm resting on the console (screen tilted toward me) to tap on the screen and it will be at a safe position that won't impair my driving. I don't use gps I use google maps all day every day, I go from customer to customer and that's just the way I do it. Never got into gps as I just don't need something telling me when to turn (I have a brain for that). I will do the same in my personal truck and also use it for audio payback sometimes through the car radios. I will also use it on long trips mounted to a headrest for my daughters to watch movies. I may have to make a mount, but I'll get it going the way I want some how. DIY's are on youtube also, creative use of velcro strips...
I actually used to use navigation on my xoom. I'd be messing around with my xoom while my brother drove. Then we'd get hungry and need to find out how to get to a restaurant. Its not absolutely necessary but everything on the tablet should work, just in case.

This unit is not directly connected to your GPS unit, and can therefore be used with a variety of different models. It draws power from your car cigarette lighter. It is great for GPS without external antenna connector.
That means your tablet will be receiving the boosted signal and you don't have to worry about its location.
When I'm alone I use a stand that has a bean bag bottom and sit it on the passenger seat facing me. Tablet-sized car mounts are too big to travel with. When I'm with someone, they're the navigator.
I was planning to use the TFP in my boat with charting software. Today I use an old Ipad and a car mount. Beats paying $3000+ for a garmin marine plotter.
GlobalSat BT-368i Bluetooth GPS Receiver, $53.46 - great reviews. I'll probably pick one of these up for the hell of it.
Check out proclips . They have awesome mounting solutions. Getting one for my galaxy nexus

I use Transformer (original) as GPS only when I have someone else in car to hold it or I'm the passenger. Well, mostly. Sometimes I just put it... on the floor (so it doesn't break when I have to use brakes) - I don't look at the screen then, only listen to the voice.
With a BT GPS unit I plan to use it. I have a special phone mount integrated into my cars dash and it uses a quick release dual t mount bracket & I already have the parts on order from eBay to make a dual t mount tablet mount & it sits off to the right of my center console next to my indash GPS with zero view obstruction & full tilt & swivel.
I plan to post photos & my build in a thread.
For those that think it is to big for car use.... f###### hogwash

Got mine back from RMA today...

So far so good. I actually turned on my bluetooth radio and my wifi speeds were the same. First time I've seen this happen on multiple tablets. I also switched from the gray to the other color champagne. I actually like this lighter color better, but it will be in a case anyway. So far so good. No bleed, no dead pixels. I don't care about the GPS, but I ran that GPS test software anyway. Inside I connected to 8 birds in about 10 seconds or less. That is also something I never had. By the way, this is a C2 serial. The only thing I was told by Asus was this tablet was specifically tested and used prior to me getting it. I can tell it was, a couple small finger prints and a charged battery. So far so good, I hope it lasts!

Do you have a bluetooth speaker, or something to pair it to and transfer data while trying your speedtests?
Mine will be going in for this in the near future and I want to know that it does actually work on some units.
I can turn on bluetooth, and even pair it without really any change in wifi performance. As soon as you transmit to a speaker though it plummets to 400k or less.
Thats awesome. Got mine back last Friday still cant use wifi and bloothooth together and no GPS. C10 was shipped.
Got my tested one back from them and it had major dust and dead pixels from them... They didn't remove that plastic cover when they tested...
Gps worked good indoors on par with my EVO 3d
WiFi was decent
I don't use Bluetooth
But I am returning for a refund both tablet and dock to asus gonna get me a snapdragon tablet instead or maybe a ps vita idk yet maybe just an ultrabook
To much to choose from....
Idk if a tablet is really needed for me... A new phone would do it... Sprint needs to hurry up and release something!

I sent them a nasty email complaining about the "waiting to Repair" status and in 3 hours they had a new serial number ready to ship...should be here tomorrow, within 48 hours of my email being sent, so complaining seems to motivate them.
I had a BCOK but they are sending me a C2O, hopefully it works well.

My Prime GPS in a moving car *Pics inside*

Ok for starters i don't really care if my Prime's GPS works or not or even came with one. I have my smart phone for that. But i understand there are some people out there that are upset because it was shipped with a GPS in the specs and it should work.& not have to put tinfoil or be in some sort of force field or perfect condition to work. I just picked up "another" Prime today, i got the Prime fever lol. Anyway here is two pictures one of me driving at around 45mph and another while i was filling up for gas at a stand still. Both off wifi obviously. I only tested this once so far and it is cloudy and raining today. So i figured this would be a great time to test being its not "sunny and clear" skys Now sorry for the blurry pics its very hard to take a picture with a 5.3" Galaxy Note phone while holding a Prime & hanging onto the wheel lol. Let alone not safe
I dunno if these results are considered good or acceptable compared to other devices. But this is what i got on 1 test run, on a rainy day mind you. That is for the GPS guru's to figure out from my pictures. And in reality i just wanted to have some fun testing.
Also... I am on 9.4.2.14 FW & 9.13 GPS

72' accuracy while driving is crap, but at least you had a lock.
Let's not let this thread drift from the fix issue.
