hi everyone
just tried to download some torrents and i am experiencing very slow download speeds (currently at 49kb/s). wi fi signal is currently full as im next to the router so i cant think what it can be. i have tried atorrent and ttorrent both giving the same download speeds
has anyone got and ideas where im going wrong.
thanks
WAREZ. Loljk but come on, its android, do you expect it to be fast. Max I get is 250 kB/s which fluctuates down to zero sometimes.
250 would be a dream, im struggling to get over 50. is it because its on android then. i would have thought it would still be good as i have good internet speed
Probably due to low amount of seeders, try to download items with 150-200+ seeders for good DL speeds.

The first time I downloaded a torrent on mine (shortly after .11 came out) I got over 1MB/s sustained. I don't know what to suggest, nor what I did differently than you, but I certainly had higher speeds. I do believe that some of the free versions of the torrent clients for Android limit your D/L speeds though. I have tTorrent Pro fyi.
I've gotten up to 1mb/s with atorrent when there are many seeders. This was from my basement where I only have a few bars.

The prime gets unusale during the download, but u get top speed.
I use aDownloader https://market.android.com/details?id=com.DroiDownloader and I easilly get above 2 megabytes per second. When you reach such a download speed the tablet is not usable for anything else, therefore it is good to limit it at 1 megabytes per second.
Lower the concurrent connections if possible.
Android's network stack generally suck with many open connections.
You see the same when downloading from the market. More than often all downloads happen sequentially instead of parallel that one would expect.

Have you tried the same file from a computer? Chances are, it's the torrent and not the device.
My device downloads as fast as my connection allows. It also streams HD media to and from my network without any issues. It actually performs a lot better than a dedicated media pc client that I have set up in my kitchen, so I tend to hook this into the TV instead nowadays.

Oh, cut the crap. There are many valid/legal uses for torrents. No need to allow a search engine to associate that with the Prime.

I was just joking jeez. But I'd say you do download illegal stuff from your extremely defensive response. Don't worry, nobody admits to it but secretly we all know everyone does it.

I had the same issue with kitkat, previous device on 3.2 OS run fine. PC too.
I disabled uTP in flud (network), and I limited connections to 30 (bandwidth).
(finally less sth like 21)
Probably it will resolve problem.
If not, forward ports on router, and set it in BT client
i.e. 6881~6889 or 18006 UTP&UDP.
Eventually also disable upnp, or also change storage to SD, or internal memory.
I have also enabled encryption out and in, and both level. I'm not sure, maybe if it will helps here I write.
At the end you can check ttorent with utp disabled/or prevented from limit ~sth like this, that's the other solution.
In Android options you can test turning off optimizing Wifi option.
I also met with serious troubles with achieving proper speeds during attempts of streaming torrents. Unfortunately, now there is no any torrent stream app which has extended options of p2p protocol, for applying given instructions above, excluding mTorrent, (port setting and encryption) which is still not enough, and flud still rules among all android p2p clients, which allows to get some more decent speeds, maybe not as at PC, but decent.
And flud still surprises, having option of sequential downloading, which means transforming way of downloading, just for watching in fly, during downloading, to not spread pieces around during downloading. We can see the 'pieces' in a diagram, and just start watching after some time when enough data is collected. Mostly when ETA corresponds with duration of movie. And then, just find your file, and open by your usual player. That's it. I recommend MX Player. Finds different subs in many languages, allows switching.
So, with my instructions for flud given above, or just with flud as solution for problem with slow torrent downloads on Android, especially streams, now you can finally achieve decent speeds to stream i . e. 2GB FHD file with 4 mb network bandwidth on devices with troubles with low speed of downloading torrents on Android.
So, enjoy.

I was using the mobile speedtest app to see how my evo 3d performed on my wifi.
I'm seeing that my downlink speeds are consistently around a third of my uplink.
What gives?
Edit: is the test flawed or does the os limit download speeds?
Edit2: well I feel like a real dolt now, egg on my face. I noticed the server the mobile app was connecting to didn't match the one I used on the comouter.
Switched servers and now I'm seeing performance very comparable to what the laptop achieves. I'm duly impressed!

Are you on DSL?
My service is 15mbits down, 2mbits up. This is set to increase to 30mbits down and 8mbits up after this month.
I recently purchased and set up a Cisco n4200, the best consumer router offered, to handle the increase in connected devices in the home, an upgrade from the ****tier linksys before it (yes I know linksys is a Cisco brand but higher tier devices bear the Cisco name over linksys).
What I'm seeing consistently on my phone is about 256kb/s down and around 760-800kb/s up.
Edit: never mind, edited first post.

Do you mean an E4200? If so it is far from the best available.
my line is 50mb down and 5mb up running through a linksys wrt610n router and i see 25-30mb down and 5mb up on my evo, 3d, view, and epic. all of them have at stock settings so im sure i could get a bit more if i were to change the settings for better performance.

Yes, you're correct. E4200. I'm really dropping the ball today.
From what I researched and all the options I looked at, it is the best consumer grade router available from Cisco, belkin et al.
I need the wireless in the home utilized efficiently and intelligently among the phones, tvs, consoles, computers, rokus and voip service. This does the job pretty well.
I realize there are more advanced options available in the "prosumer" and business class tiers but I don't think I need those. I'm not running a bittorrent server in the home after all.
Taking in light my usage case, would you recommend a different router for me?

Hi all,
I was hoping someone could offer some advice.
I am due to be working away from home for half the month and at the moment my set up at home consists of a beast of a gaming rig. I don't want to fork out for an expensive gaming laptop and thought the prime might be a good option for me.
So a few questions...
1. How do the remote desktop applications fare on the prime? Essentially I would need to use the prime to wake up my pc at home, control torrent downloads and maybe play a game with low graphic demands like football manager (i'm not expecting BF3 or other FPS...could an MMO work via remote desktop? like TOR?)
2. With regards to the "cloud storage" do you get 2gb with the transformer prime? if so can this also be accessed via a pc at home? So I could for example...
Remotely download a movie.
Put the movie file onto the cloud storage.
Access the movie file from my prime so that I can watch it in an area without wifi.
3. Is there a way to add a 3g dongle to the prime?
4. I am due a phone upgrade in March. I currently have a HTC desire which has stood the test of time for it's 2 year contract. Money is a little tight so I was considering getting my phone upgrade and sticking it on ebay to cover most of the prime's cost. I figure I only need a phone for calls and the built in sat nav and the prime can do the rest. also my HTC desire can only get me £75 from mobile recycling places.
5. As I have to wait until March is there a tablet I have overlooked which will be released in March that would be superior to this...basically if i am waiting until March should I hold out for something else?
Thanks in advance for the replies everyone!

am i doing something wrong?
1 the preloaded software only works when the laptop is already in but it is smooth enough to play something simple
2 yes download movie in PC upload top cloud storage them you can watch it without wifi our already some services allow that
3 no 3g dongle it's a wifi tablet
4 get the nexus a you can find them cheap and feet ics on them
5 tablets well be the same by March all quad core all same resolution that's my view anyway all you can do its wait and pick on personal opinion

I use Teamviewer, it runs the computer just like I was in front of it, never tried major gaming on it though. I don't think it would work well since most of the login apps out there decrease colors and other things to enhance performance.

You get 8 gb, and yes you can access/sync it from any computer. I use it to sync my work, Prime, and home computer files

In order to do that it will have to be downloaded first to your prime, but it can be done.

right now it really is a waiting game to see what other tablets come out by then, if any. Probably the Ipad3 will be out, and I would guess 1-2 more Tegra 3 tabs, but they may hit production delays just like the prime did, no one really knows, right now it is a crap shoot. The great part is this tab is going to be competitive with anything that comes out next year for the most part.
Thanks in advance for the replies everyone!

Ok, my msg is too short....
You can control your PC over the internet using TeamViewer. No, you won't be able to play an MMO or do other major gaming on it. I guarantee you that TOR will be a slideshow, you'll be able to gather nodes (if you log near them) and manage Crew Missions but that's about it.
If you are running Windows7 you will need to use a Magic Packet to wake your PC to manage torrents, etc. I believe there is also an Android app that will remotely manage Mircotorrent (aka uTorrent) remotely without requiring you to manage your PC.
You can share your files via DropBox (or similar) as long as you are mindful of the 2GB limit.
No better tablet has been announced for March release yet, and if it were (given the industry standard of badly slipped release dates) I wouldn't count on it. Now if one had been announced with a January release....
You can remote in using Splashtop HD to remote in. It transmits both video and audio. Just have to install remote viewer software on the pc.

In relation to the 3g single question, Asus feel that as android phones can tether then peeople would just tether to their prime. Obviously they are assuming that everyone with a prime will already have a smart phone with tethering available, this is a stretch.

wow some fantastic comments thank you all.
I think there has to be a limit to expectation here. I'm not expecting the remote desktop to run things perfectly but it won't be it's primary function otherwise I'd just get a laptop.
So £500 then...I wonder if carphonewarehouse would do a deal if you buy a contract from them.
splashtop HD or built in splashtop in mycloud in mydesktop should work fine for video or gaming. just make sure to load reviewer on to PC. pretty simple setup. load reviewer on PC. load on tablet. enter names and passwords on both devices and your good to go.
another thing to look at for gaming is OnLive. its out for Android. allows you to play PC/console/Indie games through the cloud on OnLive servers. response time is fastest out there and basically no lag. feels just as if you natively playing the game. there are some great games up there like PC/Nvidia optimized Batman Arkham City, Homefront fps, Metro 2033, unreal tournament(PC version), etc.. the games look and play great on the prime. no loss in quality basically. the app is free from marketplace. free to make an account. you get to play all the games with a free 30 min. trial period. you can flat out buy the game but best seems to be the bundle package. for $9.99 a month you have unlimited access to 100's of top notch PC/console games. I was playing Darksiders, through OnLive, on my prime. no lag at all, graphics looked sick. definitely a cool experience and great deal considering the caliber and number of games they have up there.

NICE! I never needed a reason for onlive...I'll have to check it out.
It's clear that WIFI is causing quite some debate, some people having issues, some people saying it works fine for them...
But often nothing is mentioned about whether they are on G-only, mixed, N-only. How the tests have been done, where the router is and where they were while testing, etc.
At the moment I own a TF101, TF201 and SGS2 and 2 wireless routers so I am in the position to do some testing but am wondering what the best way is. I know of wifi analyzer and speedtest (the app) but get extremely mixed results with speedtest.
On one run it can tell me I have a 13mbps connection, but 2 measurements later it's 5 or something so not sure if that's the way to do it. But what is? I guess wifi analyzer is fine for general info (signal strength) and it seems the signal strength shown on the TF201 is almost as good as on the TF101/SGS2 (also when 10 meters away from the routers with for example 2 walls in between).
If this thread is unnecessary or something, please close it... Just wanted to get some direction and clear way of testing and measuring to finally get an answer how exactly the TF201 performs.
* General signal info: Wifi Analyzer
* Speed measurement: Speedtest app? How many measurements should one take, is it necessary to close the app after each measurements? Or should I transfer a file to/from my pc to the tablets over wifi or somethign, or use a webbased speedtest (and with or without flash interface?)
Any recommendations/remarks?
>WIFI is causing quite some debate, some people having issues, some people saying it works fine for them...
Wifi performance is highly variable, depending on many factors. People tend to think of wifi as "if it works good for Joe, it should work good for me." That's not how it works. It's not possible to have a standardized wifi test that applies to everyone.
>I know of wifi analyzer and speedtest (the app) but get extremely mixed results with speedtest.
Speedtest introduces the vagaries of the Internet, which increases variability. People use it because it's convenient, but it's better to use something that tests only your LAN. Suggest iPerf for Android. Another simple method is to do a large file copy to get throughput (size / xfer time). Do it 3 times and get avg.
Wifi Analyzer shows routers w/ recognized SSIDs, but it doesn't show other sources of 2.4GHz interference. It's better to just ignore it and run throughput tests for each channel.
There are various caveats for setting up wifi: don't use mixed mode, don't use auto 20/40 for 2.4GHz, don't use TKIP/WPA or WEP, do use WMM, et al. All these reduce wifi speed.
However, the complaint many have is (drastically) reduced speed with respect to increased range. That's usually a reception problem rather than a config problem. It may be fixable with a config change, but more likely, it can't. Testing won't solve this problem. Even if you get good results with testing (via changing some specs), it'd only apply to you and not anyone else.
Suggestions:
. Check for and apply any router firmware update.
. Optimize router config per tips found at various sites.
. Try throughput tests. Change channels and experiment with settings per test findings.
. Try a different (new) router. Many routers mentioned in other threads are old draft-N units that may have compatibility issue with certain devices/drivers, especially in mixed-mode operation.
The last is a quick and simple solution for non-techies. Routers are cheap to replace; not so tablets.
Their is no standard test as we all have different routers! My router is fine with the prime! works great super fast downloads faster than my Evo 4g and my brothers thrive
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201
I understand about the variances, I think it's more of a matter of being able to test with multiple devices you own. In that case you can actually compare your TF201 (in this case) and the effects of obstacles/distance on it (again compared to other devices you actually own).
If people say 'well, the TF201 works just as fine as my SGS2' I have no idea what exactly it means... When setting right next to the router? Perhaps the wifi connection is not the bottleneck? etc...
Was more hoping for a good way of simply testing the TF201 performance compared to other devices in my current home situation. But having some sort of set settings might make it possible to compare those results with other people doing the same thing with a number of devices in their home situation
About the different routers, sure... But they all have the same general settings.
The idea was not to find a solution, but merely get a proper measurement of the situation and perhaps draw conclusions based on that.
But I'll check the iPerf app and also the simply transferring an x-amount of data. Thanks for the replies so far!
>If people say 'well, the TF201 works just as fine as my SGS2' I have no idea what exactly it means...
Most people aren't technical. It's hard enough just to get folks to tell the name of their routers, let alone how it's configured, or any other test parameters. Like the 3rd post in this thread. That's the way it is.
It doesn't matter anyway. As said, how wifi performs on one doesn't relate to the next. The only thing that's relevant is how it performs for you. That means doing your own testing, configuration, etc.
---------- Post added at 02:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:08 PM ----------
>Was more hoping for a good way of simply testing the TF201 performance compared to other devices in my current home situation.
iPerf will do that. Have one PC connected to router via wired cable to act as server, and do comparative testing.
>About the different routers, sure... But they all have the same general settings.
Different routers have different performance, even with same settings.
e.mote is 100% correct in what he writes. I'm not the network/wireless guy at work, but I have been following them around from time to time when people claimed that some of "my" systems didn't work over WiFI..
Wireless is a very imperfect medium. First and foremost 2.4Ghz is shared by too many devices. Most of which you will not pick up with WiFi Analyzer. For example, we had a situation where all wireless communication died in an area around lunchtime every day. After alot of work we found the culprit: one of three microwave ovens used by the staff would flood half the 2.4Ghz channels with noise, effectively jamming them.
Also, wireless is a shared medium. That is, every device connected to your router has to wait its turn to be able to talk. If some of these devices are too far away from each other to "see" the other devices, chances are they will try and send/transmit at the same time. This can also severely distrupt WiFi performance.
There are so many variables when it comes to WiFi that I'm usually amazed it actually works as well as it does. And when it doesn't, it's too easy to point at a single device as the culprit. There is usually many factors at play here. It's damn hard getting any mainstream user to understand this.

I agree with e.mote too. There are a couple of YouTube videos floating around comparing a TF1 to the Prime side-by-side. The signal on the Prime seems erratic in comparison. Much like GPS, getting a signal and maintaining it are two different things. I think a lot of people are using the tests e.mote mentioned and calling it good. The throughput test is the only one that tests the sustainability of the signal. Things like web access don't really need a sustained signal to appear to be performing well. Streaming, online gaming, and downloads do. If you're always using your home network and get good results there then Wi-Fi performance probably isn't a big deal for you. It's when you're traveling and using sketchy APs in hotels, restaurants, and airports, that Wi-Fi's really tested. GoGo inlfight is a great test when 100 people are all competing for the same bandwidth in a confined place simultaneously. There can never be agreement on Wi-Fi performance because no two people use Wi-Fi the same way or under the same conditions.
By running the speed tests from the speedtest. net app the new update actually made my wifi speed slower . My connection is 40 / 5m . When I was on firmware. 11.1 I was getting about 5m down. Now I am getting about 1.5m down with the new .13 update. I thought the change log says that it increases wifi performance. Anyone else see slower speeds?
Also to put this in perspective I have my iPhone 4 running the same speedtest app and its getting almost 18m down in the same location as my prime.
Did you try a reboot then do tests again? Yeah the changelog does says it improves wifi on most devices. Still more updates coming though.
Yeah, it increases Wi-Fi performance but for some only and makes it worse for others.
I took mine back to the store earlier today and said I wanted a refund since they got none in stock. The salesman called someone to come over and he asked me to wait for this .13 update, claiming it will fix my Wi-Fi problem. Since I only wanted to exchange, I kept mine. Will report once I am able to update.
Yeah after playing with .13 for over 24 hours my wifi is worse for sure.
My net is 15k down and 2k up.
I live in a condo and can "see" 8-14 other wifi networks. (gads!)
I set mine up to be in the least busy channel
Did this test at 5am to have the least noise
next to router: (2 feet)
14,220 up 2142 down That is the same speed I get wired
Next room over, though 3 walls, bathroom and near a tv, access point, xbox, ps3, wii etc aka a ton of other wifi devices
near side of the room (10 -15 feet away)
13850 down 2113 up
Far side of room (8 feet more) so 15-20 feet away
3896 down 2132 up
4 feet outside my door (about 4-5 feet farther)
2370 down 2027 up
So the download speed is dropping like a rock, the upload speed is staying the same, but it's only 2k so hard to tell if it's being effected.
Thankfully I don't need to use it on my front doorstep a lot.
---------- Post added at 05:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:09 AM ----------
Only other device i have to test same spots with is an iPod touch.
Next to router:
8418 down 2009up
near side next room:
8188 down 1995 up
Far side next room:
8150 down 2010 up
Outside:
5324 down 1986 up
So my old iPod touch has better wifi range.

I agree. My speeds were snappy quick (without bt) before this update. Now response times are slower. Asus is going in the wrong direction.
My speed is also down (per speedtest)but my range has been extended(per wifi anlr)and signal stronger. I dont get it I have the lowest Speedtest results since I got it in Dec.
Edit: Started uninstalling apps from the most recent DLs while doing Speedtests ..... and BINGO..... Got rid of Chrome and got all my speed back plus some... I dont get it but whatever Prime now working better than ever.

i was getting bad speeds after the update too, and random reboots, before the update everything was great. I did a factory reset and my wifi is great again and no more random reboots!
So how far is everyone away from there router? I only say that because the speeds are fine next to the router but from 10 to 15 feet they are horrible. I kinda wish I could downgrade to .11.1....
I give up. I've tried everything to get my TFP to get better wifi speeds from a distance and I haven't found anything that helps. I completely reconfigured my router, factory reset my device, uninstalled every single app I've downloaded and still whenever I get over 20 feet away from my router, my wifi speed drops below 2 mbps.
I'm starting to think the people without this issue have some crazy long range routers or something. I really love this tablet but I'm losing hope fast. ICS + tegra 3 is amazing, so I hope if I do return this there will be another similarly specced Tablet out soon. I can't go to ios.

How's that? Why not N routers set to B/G? No, there's more to it than routers; Prime's the odd man out on being able to reach my street. Channels 1-11, Mixed, B, G, N, etc... It's always out of signal before the rest.

maybe your prime does have a serious issue then however I know for a fact my parents newer bgn netgear router wouldn't range past 10ft with the prime so I hooked up their old router and it works throughout the house

Throughout house. What kind of distance from router. I get a good thirty or so feet with the Prime while maintaining decent quality connection in regards to through-put; my phone get's about fourty-five, laptops about the same.

Try setting your router to G band only and a low frequency like channel1,2 or 3 and check range with wifi analyser.... if its not better its not gonna get better
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium

No Primes get same range as other Wi-Fi devices I've tested 3 Primes now on several different routers dead spot comes about 10 ft before other Wi-Fi devices.... it's the aluminum backplate that's the culprit.
I can never get anywhere near 150 mbps and not even G speed. What is the point of putting wifi n in the spec for the phone? We should sue HTC to get some money back for false advertising. Apple got sued over SIRI. $$

FYI, Mbps vs MB/s are 2 differenet things. 1 byte = 8 bits
Mbps you see is referring to mega "bits" per second, and MB refers to mega "byte". While "ps" and "/s" both means per second
150Mb/8=18. 75MB (theoretical of course)
Home ISP speeds average 7.5Mbps-50Mbps, say 50Mbps (assuming you are using a connection as high leveled as this), you get most at 6.25MB/s (fastest download from microsoft servers I have got was almost 2MB/s ONLY) download IF the server you are downloading from is capable of uploading at that speed.
To get full potential, you usually use this for local file transfers, say from your desktop computer to your router then to your phone file transfer operations, but keep in mind the write speed of the storage device is also a limiting factor.
If your sd card is class 4, it is capable of writing at around 4MB/s, class 6 = 6MB/s and etc
I have got as high as 72Mbps (this alone is already faster than G which is at 54Mbps) connection to my router, also remember HTC included a power saver feature for the wifi module in the advanced settings you can turn off.
Keep in mind that you also have your router to have the channel width 40MHz enabled to take full advantage of N (usually not enabled by default)
Don't forget that range, weather condition and noises are also part of the factors
I think you should avoid suing anyone at the moment.
Trust me. All i got is ~13Mbps doing local file transfer. I am using ES-Explorer doing smb file transfer.

ES explorer does not use native SMB access, I believe there us a lot of emulation done in software level to establish the connection, and I think Es is made in java, not the most efficient language out there.
Wait until we have CIFS in kernel then we can do more testing through SMB more natively
