I was using the mobile speedtest app to see how my evo 3d performed on my wifi.
I'm seeing that my downlink speeds are consistently around a third of my uplink.
What gives?
Edit: is the test flawed or does the os limit download speeds?
Edit2: well I feel like a real dolt now, egg on my face. I noticed the server the mobile app was connecting to didn't match the one I used on the comouter.
Switched servers and now I'm seeing performance very comparable to what the laptop achieves. I'm duly impressed!

Are you on DSL?
My service is 15mbits down, 2mbits up. This is set to increase to 30mbits down and 8mbits up after this month.
I recently purchased and set up a Cisco n4200, the best consumer router offered, to handle the increase in connected devices in the home, an upgrade from the ****tier linksys before it (yes I know linksys is a Cisco brand but higher tier devices bear the Cisco name over linksys).
What I'm seeing consistently on my phone is about 256kb/s down and around 760-800kb/s up.
Edit: never mind, edited first post.

Do you mean an E4200? If so it is far from the best available.
my line is 50mb down and 5mb up running through a linksys wrt610n router and i see 25-30mb down and 5mb up on my evo, 3d, view, and epic. all of them have at stock settings so im sure i could get a bit more if i were to change the settings for better performance.

Yes, you're correct. E4200. I'm really dropping the ball today.
From what I researched and all the options I looked at, it is the best consumer grade router available from Cisco, belkin et al.
I need the wireless in the home utilized efficiently and intelligently among the phones, tvs, consoles, computers, rokus and voip service. This does the job pretty well.
I realize there are more advanced options available in the "prosumer" and business class tiers but I don't think I need those. I'm not running a bittorrent server in the home after all.
Taking in light my usage case, would you recommend a different router for me?

By running the speed tests from the speedtest. net app the new update actually made my wifi speed slower . My connection is 40 / 5m . When I was on firmware. 11.1 I was getting about 5m down. Now I am getting about 1.5m down with the new .13 update. I thought the change log says that it increases wifi performance. Anyone else see slower speeds?
Also to put this in perspective I have my iPhone 4 running the same speedtest app and its getting almost 18m down in the same location as my prime.
Did you try a reboot then do tests again? Yeah the changelog does says it improves wifi on most devices. Still more updates coming though.
Yeah, it increases Wi-Fi performance but for some only and makes it worse for others.
I took mine back to the store earlier today and said I wanted a refund since they got none in stock. The salesman called someone to come over and he asked me to wait for this .13 update, claiming it will fix my Wi-Fi problem. Since I only wanted to exchange, I kept mine. Will report once I am able to update.
Yeah after playing with .13 for over 24 hours my wifi is worse for sure.
My net is 15k down and 2k up.
I live in a condo and can "see" 8-14 other wifi networks. (gads!)
I set mine up to be in the least busy channel
Did this test at 5am to have the least noise
next to router: (2 feet)
14,220 up 2142 down That is the same speed I get wired
Next room over, though 3 walls, bathroom and near a tv, access point, xbox, ps3, wii etc aka a ton of other wifi devices
near side of the room (10 -15 feet away)
13850 down 2113 up
Far side of room (8 feet more) so 15-20 feet away
3896 down 2132 up
4 feet outside my door (about 4-5 feet farther)
2370 down 2027 up
So the download speed is dropping like a rock, the upload speed is staying the same, but it's only 2k so hard to tell if it's being effected.
Thankfully I don't need to use it on my front doorstep a lot.
---------- Post added at 05:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:09 AM ----------
Only other device i have to test same spots with is an iPod touch.
Next to router:
8418 down 2009up
near side next room:
8188 down 1995 up
Far side next room:
8150 down 2010 up
Outside:
5324 down 1986 up
So my old iPod touch has better wifi range.

I agree. My speeds were snappy quick (without bt) before this update. Now response times are slower. Asus is going in the wrong direction.
My speed is also down (per speedtest)but my range has been extended(per wifi anlr)and signal stronger. I dont get it I have the lowest Speedtest results since I got it in Dec.
Edit: Started uninstalling apps from the most recent DLs while doing Speedtests ..... and BINGO..... Got rid of Chrome and got all my speed back plus some... I dont get it but whatever Prime now working better than ever.

i was getting bad speeds after the update too, and random reboots, before the update everything was great. I did a factory reset and my wifi is great again and no more random reboots!
So how far is everyone away from there router? I only say that because the speeds are fine next to the router but from 10 to 15 feet they are horrible. I kinda wish I could downgrade to .11.1....
I give up. I've tried everything to get my TFP to get better wifi speeds from a distance and I haven't found anything that helps. I completely reconfigured my router, factory reset my device, uninstalled every single app I've downloaded and still whenever I get over 20 feet away from my router, my wifi speed drops below 2 mbps.
I'm starting to think the people without this issue have some crazy long range routers or something. I really love this tablet but I'm losing hope fast. ICS + tegra 3 is amazing, so I hope if I do return this there will be another similarly specced Tablet out soon. I can't go to ios.

How's that? Why not N routers set to B/G? No, there's more to it than routers; Prime's the odd man out on being able to reach my street. Channels 1-11, Mixed, B, G, N, etc... It's always out of signal before the rest.

maybe your prime does have a serious issue then however I know for a fact my parents newer bgn netgear router wouldn't range past 10ft with the prime so I hooked up their old router and it works throughout the house

Throughout house. What kind of distance from router. I get a good thirty or so feet with the Prime while maintaining decent quality connection in regards to through-put; my phone get's about fourty-five, laptops about the same.

Try setting your router to G band only and a low frequency like channel1,2 or 3 and check range with wifi analyser.... if its not better its not gonna get better

No Primes get same range as other Wi-Fi devices I've tested 3 Primes now on several different routers dead spot comes about 10 ft before other Wi-Fi devices.... it's the aluminum backplate that's the culprit.
hi everyone
just tried to download some torrents and i am experiencing very slow download speeds (currently at 49kb/s). wi fi signal is currently full as im next to the router so i cant think what it can be. i have tried atorrent and ttorrent both giving the same download speeds
has anyone got and ideas where im going wrong.
thanks
WAREZ. Loljk but come on, its android, do you expect it to be fast. Max I get is 250 kB/s which fluctuates down to zero sometimes.
250 would be a dream, im struggling to get over 50. is it because its on android then. i would have thought it would still be good as i have good internet speed
Probably due to low amount of seeders, try to download items with 150-200+ seeders for good DL speeds.

The first time I downloaded a torrent on mine (shortly after .11 came out) I got over 1MB/s sustained. I don't know what to suggest, nor what I did differently than you, but I certainly had higher speeds. I do believe that some of the free versions of the torrent clients for Android limit your D/L speeds though. I have tTorrent Pro fyi.
I've gotten up to 1mb/s with atorrent when there are many seeders. This was from my basement where I only have a few bars.

The prime gets unusale during the download, but u get top speed.
I use aDownloader https://market.android.com/details?id=com.DroiDownloader and I easilly get above 2 megabytes per second. When you reach such a download speed the tablet is not usable for anything else, therefore it is good to limit it at 1 megabytes per second.
Lower the concurrent connections if possible.
Android's network stack generally suck with many open connections.
You see the same when downloading from the market. More than often all downloads happen sequentially instead of parallel that one would expect.

Have you tried the same file from a computer? Chances are, it's the torrent and not the device.
My device downloads as fast as my connection allows. It also streams HD media to and from my network without any issues. It actually performs a lot better than a dedicated media pc client that I have set up in my kitchen, so I tend to hook this into the TV instead nowadays.

Oh, cut the crap. There are many valid/legal uses for torrents. No need to allow a search engine to associate that with the Prime.

I was just joking jeez. But I'd say you do download illegal stuff from your extremely defensive response. Don't worry, nobody admits to it but secretly we all know everyone does it.

I had the same issue with kitkat, previous device on 3.2 OS run fine. PC too.
I disabled uTP in flud (network), and I limited connections to 30 (bandwidth).
(finally less sth like 21)
Probably it will resolve problem.
If not, forward ports on router, and set it in BT client
i.e. 6881~6889 or 18006 UTP&UDP.
Eventually also disable upnp, or also change storage to SD, or internal memory.
I have also enabled encryption out and in, and both level. I'm not sure, maybe if it will helps here I write.
At the end you can check ttorent with utp disabled/or prevented from limit ~sth like this, that's the other solution.
In Android options you can test turning off optimizing Wifi option.
I also met with serious troubles with achieving proper speeds during attempts of streaming torrents. Unfortunately, now there is no any torrent stream app which has extended options of p2p protocol, for applying given instructions above, excluding mTorrent, (port setting and encryption) which is still not enough, and flud still rules among all android p2p clients, which allows to get some more decent speeds, maybe not as at PC, but decent.
And flud still surprises, having option of sequential downloading, which means transforming way of downloading, just for watching in fly, during downloading, to not spread pieces around during downloading. We can see the 'pieces' in a diagram, and just start watching after some time when enough data is collected. Mostly when ETA corresponds with duration of movie. And then, just find your file, and open by your usual player. That's it. I recommend MX Player. Finds different subs in many languages, allows switching.
So, with my instructions for flud given above, or just with flud as solution for problem with slow torrent downloads on Android, especially streams, now you can finally achieve decent speeds to stream i . e. 2GB FHD file with 4 mb network bandwidth on devices with troubles with low speed of downloading torrents on Android.
So, enjoy.

Looking for an NFC file transfer app that can transfer ZIPs, MP3s and such........ but not the kind that uses Bluetooth. Any suggestions?
This is legit a pretty dumb question.
NFC isn't for transferring large amounts of data, it's for low power transfer of near-field data. I doubt it will ever be used for any larger amount of data.
Anything that "uses NFC" to do transfers will be using Bluetooth or Wifi Direct. This includes "S Beam" on Samsung phones, docks (uses NFC to do the pair/connection), etc.

So what you are saying is there is a HUGE.......... in fact, MONUMENTAL difference in size of a 128kbps 3 minute long MP3 (which is around 3-4MB) and a 2.5 MB picture with a resolution of 3264x2448 taken with our 8mp camera?
WOW! .............................alert the press! That's a Colossal difference in size!
.
No difference between the mp3 or picture since they both would transfer via Bluetooth or widi. Nfc is for small amounts of info, considering Nfc tags are in the range of only a few KB of storage.

For NFC think credit card authorizations, lights turning on when you enter a room, car unlocking as you approach it. Its not actually for file transfers.

Cool story bro. It wasn't transferred over NFC.... NFC only set up the connection, most likely the transfer was over Bluetooth or Wifi Direct.

Most likely wifi direct since NFC has a range of 30 centimeters. Thats why the phones touch or have to be waved directly over the NFC tag.
I have done extensive research on this very subject. Any file transfer dealing with NFC uses bluetooth, there's no way around it. With that said I recommend file expert. File expert is a file manager, backs up apps, also when sharing through NFC Bluetooth file transfer seems overall snappier

NFC is not BT. From wikipedia:
NFC sets up more quickly than standard Bluetooth, but has a lower transfer rate than*Bluetooth low energy
. With NFC, instead of performing manual configurations to identify devices, the connection between two NFC devices is automatically established quickly: in less than a tenth of a second. The maximum data transfer rate of NFC (424 kbit/s) is slower than that of Bluetooth V2.1 (2.1 Mbit/s). With a maximum working distance of less than 20*cm, NFC has a shorter range, which reduces the likelihood of unwanted interception.*

Over the past year of head scratching and speculation, folks seem to have a better handle on the distinctions. If two S3's or two Note 2's touch in order to xfer an 800mb movie - the xfer completes in just a couple minutes, right? That xfer rate is well beyond nfc AND bluetooth. The long & the short of it is - will the Note ever get a mod to "perform this way". See? I didn't make the mistake of saying the wrong magic word - enabling all the factoid folks to jump in there and say *that's not what it does ..." and then the question never gets answered ... so - to ask the question without mentioning the technology type ... will we i717 fans ever get to bump large files in the manner that newer Samsung devices do.
I know what you mean. When i see the S3 commercial the movie moves instantly from one phone to the other, and continues to play from the same place. It looks good, but its only television, you know.

Well then, in that case, no.
The only way to send large files like the tv commercial (which is fake -- shocking!) by bumping, is to bump the other person as you pass the sd card to them.
All the "factoids" have been doing was attempting to tell you the truth. You don't get that from reality tv.
It never occurred to me before although idea is it not uncommon. I own Nvidia Shield K1 and Nexus 9 and one is redundant to me so I wondered which one to ditch. With all its virtues, no external sd card AND only 16GB are deal breakers for me, although that's the reason why Nexus9 16GB can be found for a bargain.
So, besides obvious USB OTG stick with external data which seems little awkward to me, I run Samba server on my Samsung S5 with its comfy 128GB sd card and access all the data I want with pretty much any file manager that runs Samba client (ES File Explorer will do). Tested several Samba-server apps and at least 3 of them (free) get the job done. Auto syncing that data is next logical step but that is common practice. Hope that helps...
it need high internet speed?

Well, speed is considerably lower than copying inside of LAN but still useful. I got 300 Mbit router and copying to NAS goes up to 4-5 MB, PC does it 9-10 MB, and samba connection between 2 androids 500KB-1.5MB.
