Just for information:
I had 4.0.2.A.0.42 rooted with ZergRush method.
I did the Firmware upgrade from Firmware 4.0.2.A.0.42 to 4.0.2.A.0.69 via OTA.
And the root remains.
That's normal. More interesting would be, how to root build 62.
4.0.2.A.0.62 (St17i) and root
What's interesting there? I has been discussed here a lot.
Before 4.0.2.A.0.69 I had the 4.0.2.A.0.62 with root.
The procedure was same:
Flashed 4.0.2.A.0.42 with flashtool, rooted it with ZergRush method and did OTA Firmware update to 4.0.2.A.0.62. The root remained.
Now, if You try to do this - it's not possible any more - since the OTA gives You the 4.0.2.A.0.69 as the latest firmware. But since the root remains - what's the point of upgrading to 4.0.2.A.0.62 instead of 4.0.2.A.0.69?
Note: If You flash the 4.0.2.A.0.42 with flashtool, You have to do "wipe user data", only then You are able to root it and do the OTA to 4.0.2.A.0.69. Otherwise it will not suceed.
I did the backup with Titanium+root of all applications and settings and later after upgrade I restored with it back all my apps and settings.
Cheers!
I'd tried the rooting but still have not suceed.. been reading a lot and I think its confuse me more. can you point me to a good direction
You have to downgrade to older version, .62 cannot be rooted.
Read my tutorial, it is there, link in signature, it is also sticky in general section.

Rooting
The presumption is, that You have all the drivers installed on the computer.
Drivers will be installed when You install Sony PC Companion or Andoid SDK. Also in Sony developer page can be downloaded.
Then flash the .42 firmware using Sony PC companion and don't forget to do "wipe user data" otherwise rooting will not work.
Then download the Doomlord-Zergrush rooting script and read the rooting instructions.
If You have successfully rooted the .42 firmware on Your phone, then do software update OTA (Over the Air).
That's it! You have rooted .69 firmware on Your phone.

Hi.
I'm running my R800i with updated 2.3.3 (i used SEUS). My bootloader is locked (i think, because i bought the device from amazon, with no branding).
GingerBreak, SuperOneclick, zRoot, etc. aren't working.
Is there a way to root my device without losing all installed data/apps? I spent lots of time for configuring and customizing my phone.
As of now, if you want to root you have to unlock the bootloaders and flash a .img file through fastboot. Both procedures, and actually your question, are explained in thorough detail in this subforum, multiple times. You won't lose your data.
The reason i was asking is that somewhere in the forums i was reading reading that you can not unlock the bootloader on unbranded devices. I cant find the link anymore.

Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your device, so you can't simply flash the system.img because your data will be wiped before hand.
Two methods
Method 1
Backup using Titanium or Mybackup Pro
fastboot unlock, flash system.img
restore apps via titanium or mybackup pro
Method 2
Use flashtool to downgrade phone to 2.3.2 (dont flash userdata.sin)
root using gingerbreak, apply OTA update (DO NOT DO THIS IF BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED) and then you will be rooted on 2.3.3
Method 1:
Titanium won't work without root, or does it?
Method 2:
So when i use the flashtool to downgrade i can choose what parts of the device will get flashed?! I can downgrade without loosing settings, apps, data?!
I dont think that OTA is available in Germany, or from my Provider?! I had an Xperia X10 Mini before i got the Play, and never saw any OTA-Updates (i had never root or custom images on the X10 Mini). I always had to use PC Companion or SEUS.
Will SEUS work too? I did my 2.3.2 (with root) to 2.3.3 upgrade with SEUS and was able to choose either upgrade (apps/data will stay), or complete flash (factory-reset incl. upgrade). I choosed upgrade (apps/data will stay) but root was gone.
If OTA is not available for me, i have to choose Method 1, but then everything is "gone"?!
Edit 2: Forget it I just did it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119074&page=2 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090&page=4 helped me out.
I didnt wipe anything or "clean" my system. I just did the downgrade. After that, i got 1 issue. I always got this message: "android.process.acore has stopped". Google said that this is an issue with synchronize the contacts, etc. But i didnt freak out I just installed GingerBreak, did the root, then the OTA, and after OTA everything was fine again. Now i have full rooted 2.3.3
android.process.acore wurde unerwartet beendet
Hi, here is my story.
I bought a Neo network free and I made update OTA from 2.3.3. at 2.3.4 and I got a brick Neo after this. To unbrick it, a friend flashed a new 2.3.3 ftf and after I used the X10 flash tool to repair the loader. After this I rooted with DooMLord_v4_ROOT. All good so far.
After this I got the message that is available a new update. To not repeat again the story I made the update with SE software update trought PC.
Now I have 2.3.4. on my Neo, in the applications menu I have Superuser and done the update, but my phone is not rooted. If I try to install any app what need root permisions I get the message that my phone is not rooted. I had installed AD free app before update to 2.3.4., now is there but is not running. Same the Auto app 2 SD (need root permisions).
I tried SuperOneClick v2.3.3, again DooMLord_v4_ROOT, Gingerbreak and all failed to root my phone.
How can I root my Neo without downgrade the FW and upgrade again?
Thanks.
please use search function and post your questions in an existing thread. Thanks
i just wanted to get root on .62 so i decided to flash .42 with wotan server and root it, then update .62 withc pc companion, root didnt stay. Tried several times. Help?
update via OTA not PC Companion
just search from one of the threads.. you need to flash rootxperia.zip..then you will have root for your bb
1. Wrong thread.
2. Updating with PC companion implies you're downloading STOCK FIRMWARE. Stock firmware is NOT pre rooted and therefore, no root and stuff. If you want root, try rooting with the methods given here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409269
although, the most convenient and appropriate way to root would be to unlock BL and flash a custom kernel which is pre-rooted. Otherwise, whenever you flash a STOCK FIRMWARE, as the term implies, you well get STOCK stuff..and stock stuff is unrooted.
UNLESS, you flash a custom firmware which is modified and is rooted.

Hey!
I just wanted to know if it's possible to go back to the stock recovery in case I want to sell the phone completely stock. So is it possible?
Yes. If you're running stock fw with root, you should be able to do a repair fw via pc companion. If not, you can easily just flash your original ftf file via flashtool. Take a look in the general section of these z2 forums. All the info is there

I have been in the General section of the Z2 Forums, and I have read about how I can flash the FTF file to my phone, but I didn't know that the FTF includes the stock recovery Currently I have a Z2 with stock fw and a locked bootloader but with root. (Running stil on .314), and I'm planning to update to .167 with a rooted update package. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/4-4-4-creating-rooted-update-package-t2933155)
OK, if you upgrade with that method to 167, I believe pc companion will still repair it back to factory settings (not sure whether it will be 314 or 167). If it doesn't, flashing an ftf will solve your problems.

Hi,
I have read a few times on here that there was a small update for .28 firmware. I opened PC Companion & it said there was a update available but failed to apply as I have unlocked bootloader, rooted & running Andro kernel. Error message was device has tampered\modified software installed.
The thing is pc companion says I have firmware version 23.1.A.0.726 when I actually have 23.1.A.1.28 installed. Is there any way I can get the small update for .28 that was about 25mb. I have generic unbranded UK rom .28 installed. Maybe a flashable zip for it?
Cheers for any help
there are two different versions of .28. One ist named R3C and the last one is R4C
Cheers for the reply.
I updated mine to 23.1.A.1.28 with a clean flash & wipe with flashtool on the 18th May, according to the service menu I have 1282-0226_R4C in the customisation version line & 1282-0226_R4C in the active customisation line. So that should mean I'm on the latest version of 23.1.A.1.28
I remember reading on here that there was a small update to 23.1.A.1.28

Today there has been an Update to existing 23.1.A.1.28 (12,1 MB). Positive: After updating Root still exists.
Any Information about ChangeLog ? Could not find anything about it.

Due to the fact that pc companion wont update mine as it is unlocked bootloader & rooter with Andro kernel I let pc companion download the firmware (it downloaded the full firmware & not just the small update) & then used flashtool to decrypt it & create a FTF file minus the .ta files. I take it flashing that FTF would lose root, xposed & andro kernel but I should be able to just reflash those?
