[Q] Turning my legend into a mp3 player - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I've got a new phone recently, and I'd like to turn my old HTC legend into a mp3 player.
I'd like to completely remove Android and just make it a file manager similar to an iPod Classic, so I can play audio and video files.
I want the file manager to be the ONLY program on the phone, exept being able to take pictures (althogh the last is optional)
How do you do that/anything similar?
Thank you.

I don't think removing Android fully and using the phone with just a file browser is an option, I might be wrong though.
Your best bet would be to run CM7 without the Gapps package, this will probably be as light and fast as your going to get.

Well, I don't want it to be an Android anymore

I did something similar with my old Motorola Droid. I wanted it just to be an Audible player, so I installed CM7 and just disabled as much as I could. With root access, you can remove a number of system apps without breaking anything, and then use something like LauncherPro to hide the rest ot the icons in the app drawer that you don't want on there. You can also make a dock at the bottom in LauncherPro that has nothing on it, so that you can't even get to the drawer without adding an icon for it in the dock. You would end up with a homescreen that just has whatever specific apps you want on it, similar to an iPod Touch.
It'll probably be close to impossible to get something working on there that isn't Android--the touchscreen/wifi/camera rely on drivers and such. Your best bet will probably be to go with a ROM and customize it to fit your needs.

If you've ever used the Rockbox firmware for various MP3 players, there is an Android port. This runs like a regular app on Android. Its compiled daily for Android here:

You still need an operating system, you can't just get rid of Android. You could disable stuff that isn't essential to the OS like Gapps, and any other apps you dont need.

Are android apps phone specific?

I hope i wrote this thread in the right place...
What I was wondering is are the apks downloaded from the internet phone specific or can i just run the apks into any android os phone. For instance if i download an apk from the internet, is it only meant for a certain android device or i can run that apk in the hero,g1 and basically anything android
apps arent device dependant, within boundarys. different screen resolutions can cause trouble, so there might be high and low resolution versions of an app. it is scalable, but you know how it is, doesn't always work like planned.
so answer is no, apps are not specific, and yes, this is the right place
Thanks for the reply. Should have asked this earlier but so long as its for the android there shouldnt be any risk of bricking my phone right??(this goes as far as apk are concern)
no, a default APK cannot brick your phone, like from a small puzzle game or something..
well, there maybe some device specific apps, like the HTC battery widget, doesn't work on the Villian 5.1 sprint port, cause the famework is sprint, and the app is made for the Hero, so it simply won't install..
but there shouldn't be any problems, with default games/apps or something
thanks so much...
The only real specifications come down to the OS your running as for example os 1.5 ran differently to OS 2.0 some apps won't run without modifications.
I think google try to reduce these problems as much as they can though.
Some apps have hardware restrictions for example google earth, can be installed on a hero but it wont run.
Other apps won't be visible in the market if your missing something like a camera (won't see camera apps).
But on the whole just install and see if it works

[Q] new x10, what to do first? + other ?'s

got an x10 today, what's everyone's recommendations on to do's to make it better? i plan on rooting, then removing the branded/unwanted apps. i ordered a decalgirl skin and screen protector, but other than that, what are some tips/tweaks to start with? is it worth it to remove timescape?
also,
does ADB work with the x10?
one thing you can do is go to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833324
there you will find a way to remove some of the preloaded apps and get new ones
you may also consider rooting your phone and getting barnical Wifi to share your connection.
may be even update your music player (if you don't like the laggy media player) with winamp / power amp
not sure if i want to go that route. i usually remove apk's i don't want via ADB, that's why i was wondering if ADB works with the x10. i will probably remove the music app and adb push a stock music apk over to /system/app if that's the location on the x10. plus in my personal experience with other android devices, JIT usually has a negative effect on performance after time since it always seems fill up cache quickly.
that link looks basically like it runs some sort of abd interface, so i'm assuming adb will work with regular command line.
so now i know that the stock music app is laggy, i read somewhere they were suggesting not removing it since it was integrated with so many other apps. but if it's laggy, i'll get rid of it.
is the timescape even worth keeping? i don't do twitter, some facebook, but it's not a necessity to have a constant feed.
so yes, it does work with ADB.
if you want the regular android music player, you can download it from XDA, its here along with the regular android "3d" gallery
the file from the thread above is fully customizable, you can choose which parts of it you want to apply.
hope this helps

[Q] Intrusive adware?

So I wanted to download this app to my nexus 7 so I could watch some movies. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hd.peliculashd
(app). So i downloaded it but to watch a movie it makes you download some app https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEwMiwiY29tLmhkLmZhc3R2aWRlb3BsYXllciJd. So i downloaded it however my av says its intrusive adware. I went and opened up the movie app and it now worked and it works good and has a lot of new movies for free. But as soon as i uninstall the player it wants me to redownload it. My question is, is it a big deal to have the app. Does it do anything at all? Can it in anyway damage my device?
Read the reviews. No bueno.
The apps permissions don't give it the ability to do much of anything other than connect to the internet and start when your phone turns on. All it probably does is stick ads in your notification bar, and android has an option to prevent it from doing that. There's (probably) nothing it can do to your phone.

[Q] Disabling everything but music

Hello!
I have this horribly cheap china android phone (it's supposed to be a GalaxyS4 mini - replica, but it looks nothing like it) and I bought it for one single purpose: To have it stolen in case of need. Yeah. At nights when the city over here becomes very very insecure, I keep my main phone hidden, while I bring out my chinaphone to listen to music and to connect to facebook chat (the stand alone app) by connecting to the "Portable wifi hotspot" I activate in my main cellphone.
The thing is, the chinaphone its a piece of crap (it has 256 MB of RAM under android 4.1.2) and while it works fine after it has been rebooted, it tends to go slower and slower, to a point where it does absolutely nothing. I managed to somehow root it (it was a pain, since the rooting tools were in chinese and so is the root app) and I have installed a couple things to "enhance it" which is basically removing the bloatware they put in to make it look like a galaxy s4, live wallpapers and whatnot. And I installed another launcher, Nemus launcher, which is supposed to be one of the most lightweight.
So anyway. I was wondering what "apps" can I safely delete or disable to have a bare-bones device that can connect via wifi, open facebook messenger and play music. Maybe instead of asking what can I delete, I should ask: What should I keep?
Well, I assume you will be using Titanium Backup to remove the applications? Do you have a list you can provide here of the apps that you have?
By the way, while sad that I think it is you have a "in case of robbery phone," I also think that that is an awesome idea ha. Where I live it's not necessary, but i'll keep this idea in mind in case I have to move.
Thank you. Yeah. I have to think ahead of eventualities. I have been robbed before and I sure dont want to lose my current phone, that's why I invested in this piece of hardware that "looks" like it could be my phone, while it's waaaay cheaper.
Anyway. As for apps, here's the list that android reports under apps->all
Acount and sync settings
Advanced task manager pro (i use it to kill everything in emergencies when it all goes crazy slow)
Android Keyboard
Android System
Atrium (im getting rid of this one, I dont really use it)
Bluetooth share (should I delete this one? the bluetooth in this thing is so slow that it's like not having it at all)
BootResSelcet
Browser
Calculator
Calendar
Calendar Storage
Certificat Installer
Clean Master
Clock
com.android.provision

Sound Recorder
Status Bar
Superuser
Swiftkey

Ultra keyboard
User dictionary
VoiceCycle
VolidationTools (i thought it was "validation" but no, "Volidation")
Im using swiftkey as I love that thing and the whole "Flow input" is great for this phone, considering it is not multitouch, It's "single touch" and if I try to type with the thumbs as in my real phone, it ends all garbled because I type rather fast, and i press keys at the same time; this translated in a single touch device, when I press by accident two keys at the same time, it finds the middle point between my fingers and uses the letter in there, which is really annoying. And typing slow is... well, frustrating for me. With the flow thing, i just swipe and the words come out nicely thanks to the prediction. Problem is, that it also seems to slow down the system to a crawl very very quickly
Any other keyboard that has this function so I can try it?
Does anyone has any experience with Lightning launcher? It claims to be ultra fast, but Im not sure that means it's lightweight with the resources.
You only use this phone for music right? I would remove the launchers and swiftkey, if so.
Or do you use it for more?

[Q] Creating a template install for a friend?

Hey everyone,
My friend and I have the same phone (Motorola Razr I XT890). He's not very good when it comes to setting up his phone whereas my phone is set up pretty well with a specific launcher and specific apps for each task and then the settings of each app customised pretty deep. We use our phones in a similar enough way so rather than having to spend hours setting his phone up the way mine is, I was wondering is it at all possible to do a "template" of my phone that I can just put on his phone and it will give him the same apps with the same settings, but just have none of the actual user data, so it would be as if he's using my phone, just with his data? I don't have a lot of apps at all and use a very minimalist approach both in terms of the amount of apps I use (the less the better) and the style of my set up, yet it still takes me about 5 hours to go through everything any time I've started fresh.
I'm not very good with the technical side of things and don't want to have to go install a load of apps and pc programs etc which I may not be able to use to achieve this so if there's any simple way to do this, please share I would of course still settle on having to customise some of the apps, but it would just be nice if I could do it on his phone and when he turns his phone on for the first time after, it would look like mine with the homescreen layout, app icons etc.
We both paid some guy to root and unlock our phones and I believe we have clockworkmod if this makes anything easier?
