Unlimited Data Plan Deactivated - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Just out of curiosity, I like to dial *DATA# on my device to see how much data I have used on my unlimited plan. I got my Note on Sunday and when I upgraded, I suppose the rep that sold me the Note changed my plan, even after telling him numerous times that I will keep my unlimited data plan. When I got the SMS telling me my data that I used, it told me that my unlimited data plan was deactivated, and I am now on a 3gb capped plan. Thankfully I noticed this, and I called at&t and they told me they filed a case and it must be approved in order to keep my unlimited data plan. I am writing this so you guys check if the same thing has happened to you, just to be safe. Simply dial *DATA# to see if you are currently running an unlimited plan or capped plan.
Update: Just received an e-mail from at&t that stated the issue that was filed in the case has been resolved. Checked by dialing *DATA#, and I have gotten back my unlimited data plan! At&t originally had told me they wouldn't be able to resolve this issue until the 8th, so I am very happy that they acted as quickly as they did!

I had an unlimited plan on bell. I found out shortly after i got my note that they've restricted LTE from the unlimited plan. My only option to access LTE was to change to 6GB plan, i complained to "loyalty department" and i got some extras discounts with the switch.

If you don't get resolution very (and I mean VERY soon), go to your nearest corporate store and talk to a rep. There's a way to get it taken care of, but it's an internal number only we have access to and it should be done before the rep gets off the phone.

Yeah, I've never had a call center rep tell me they'd have to file a case. It's always been, "let me get this number to my manager and place you on a brief hold," and it's usually taken care of within five minutes.

" We're sorry. Requested information is currently unavailable. Please try again later."
This is what I get.. Suppose I will call in as well.

Double. Check. Your features on your account... What may have happened was you going from a 3g/faux 4g to a lte.. So att deactivate regular 3g, and activated lte. It happened to me and my wife's phone.. Just my 2 cents. As always double check your plan features on the account to be sure.

I wonder where did you upgrade your phone. some rep was blindly instructed by ATT RAE to switch any plan to $30 3GB plan.. you are unlucky one.

Actually dude I think thats right. The deactivated part is old unlimited plan for non-lte phones. Then the one on the top is the new lte data plan.
Sent from the best mobile device ever --Samsung Galaxy Note

For those of you that get this style message, you are still unlimited. The deactivated amount is from a previous 3G or HSPA+ data plan (depends on your old phone) that was switched to an unlimited LTE plan.
Notice the amounts both say unlimited.

I had the exact same problem as the OP. I called AT&T because when switching from the iPhone to the Note, my data wasn't working. I spoke to 3 people (Hung up the phone between each one) because none of them knew what they were doing.
The first woman sounded like she was in training and had someone walking her through the steps of what to do. She told me it would be 24-48 hours to add my data plan.
The second woman said "Sure, no problem. I'll activate it right now". I said "It will still be unlimited correct?". "Yes". I hung up, started playing around with the phone, and got an email from AT&T saying that my data plan had changed. I opened it and saw that she had changed it to "3GB $30.00 Data Pro". I immediately hung up the phone and called them back.
The third time I called, and I spoke to a man. He understood my exact problem, and promised he wouldn't hang up with me until it was resolved. He had to "e-chat" with someone while on the phone with me to get my unlimited plan put back on.
Sorry for the long story, but I wanted to make sure others knew to be 100% sure of changes to their account made by AT&T so that what happened to the OP and myself doesn't happen to you!

I switched from regular unlimited to LTE unlimited, do i get bonus points for 1337?

This is what mine said. If you have the problem I did, your unlimited will show as deactivated, and your current plan will show as one of the tiered data plans.

When I activated my Note, the guy on the phone told me I had to change to the $30 3Gig plan and lose my unlimited. He reminded me at least 3 times that my unlimited plan was gone forever. Since AT&T is throttling at 3G and I never ever have used anywhere near that much, I didn't think it was worth the hassle of protesting it.

does this mean I have unlimited data?

I would assume so. That's weird though that you used to have 2gb. I believe there is a way to check online as well, but that should mean you have unlimited data.

LOL. That would be awesome if all of the sudden you're on the unlimited data plan. That would be the best mistake AT&T made on your end.
There's been a fuss about AT&T's data plans & throttling lately. AT&T is really out to screw its consumers lately.

[Q] AT&T discounts

I know we have some AT&T employees on here, hopefully one of you can answer my question. I chatted online with a rep and they gave me some useful stuff, but not quite as detailed as I would like.
I am currently on my family's plan, but my parents made hints to me recently that I could maybe split off eventually, so I was considering doing it this summer when I am working again and have time to build up cash to hold me over the next school year.
Anyways, I confirmed in my chat with the rep that I will be able to transfer my unlimited data to a new individual plan. I then asked if there were any discounts for college students, and she led me to the premier page, and I was able to verify that my school has some sort of discount or deal through AT&T. However, figuring out what that discount that is is messy, and I was not able to figure out what.
Can any of you figure out what discount my school has? My family currently has a 25% discount from my mom's job, if it were something like that, I would be thoroughly pleased, as paying a hundred bucks a month would be much worse than around 75.
I know that in one of the long past threads there was a link to the premier discount sheet or something that one of you posted. I would like to keep as much personal info off of here as possible, so if you need my school to check for me, please pm me.
Thanks!
I can tell you that I used to work directly for AT&T as a U-Verse Technician and only received an 18% service discount. However when I switched to a different company I started receiving a 23% corporate discount.
It's weird how att assigns its discounts but id expect at least a 20% university discount if not more.

Im a Premier member my self from my work.
Here goto this site and enter your school email to see if your eligible for any discount.
https://www.wireless.att.com/business/authenticate/
If you are, they'll send you a link(to your email) that will direct you to sign up page for AT&T. Just check there how much your eligible for.
Let me know if you get stuck anywhere or need any help.

I did that before, but when I tried to use my current number they wouldn't allow me to set up the rest of my account without linking my current family plan, for which I need the last four of my moms ssn.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
In that case, I would advice you to call the AT&T Premier Support and have them check if they can create a new account while keeping your same number. If they can't then you might need to port your current number out to prepaid temporarily and then proceed with the above steps and then port it back when you create a new account. But I would give Premier call first and see what they say.
Ok. There is also a corporate store near me, so maybe I'l swing by there tomorrow and check it out. If they can't answer me then I'll call up support.
sounds like you want to do a transfer of billing responsibility to your name and social. you can do so at https://www.att.com/olam/loginAction.olamexecute?target=ToS by logging into the current account. Normally you can't keep unlimited data if you do so, but this will at least allow you to create a new account under your name. You can always add the discount after the account is established. If you prefer to keep the account under their name in case your discount is less, you can call care and have them split the bill so another account is created under their name and same discount with a separate bill and account number (this method does allow you to keep unlimited data. The transfer of billing responsibility to change to your name does not).
One way you can see what discounts your school qualifies for is by clicking on link from premier in the school inbox and on the bottom right of the page that loads, there is a link that says available offers. Once you click on that, it shows you all discounts you receive from your school. Should look like this http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/8589/discountn.jpg. This is just to see what the discounts are, not to create the account as it will try to convert the entire account you have to this new discount.
I think edu discounts are usually %15
Ujmnz, I'm still not seeing that link after I click on the one in the email. Oh well, I'll swing by the store today. Doesn't hurt getting to play with a note a bit more. Haha.

welchertc: The discounts can vary. They may not be the same from one school to another (as far as I can tell). Usually the school can tell you what the discount rates are though so maybe you can call or look on their web site. Also, (at least in my case), AT&T recognizes my school's ip addresses and directs me to an appropriate page that has all the discounts already set up when you shop. If you have access to the school and can get on their computers, try surfing to AT&T wireless from there, you should be directed to a Premier page. Hope this helps.
Lastly, you get discounts on-line that do not seem to apply if you go through their brick and mortar operation (such as waiving the activation fee). Any AT&T person can chime in if that's incorrect but that has been my experience.
On a similar note to your op, my gfs brother is on our family plan and we gave him tthe hint to maybe move on his own soon. Our store reps said we couldn't transfer the unlimited data from his line to a new account. Wtf? So is it possible then, assuming the Rep u spoke to was correct ..

While doing a transfer of billing responsibility from your parents account to your own you will probably not keep your unlimited data unless you do it in the store and even then it's not guaranteed unfortunately.
Most school discounts that I have seen are between 10% and 15%.

As cool as it'd be for the unlimited plan to transfer AT&T is very strict on that grandfathered plan. I don't see them transferring the plan with the number since the plan is tied to the account.
You would essentially have a new account with a transferred number. And if that's the case the data package would not transfer. But you might get lucky.

When chatting with the representative, they made it clear that so long as I keep my number, they treat it as the same line, just split off of the family plan with a new individual one, and that I could keep my unlimited plan. I'm not worried about that too much.
Anyways, I don't see much of a benefit to me splitting off of my family plan yet, so I probably wont until I am on my own financially. When that is the case, based on my likely salary, paying for the top level data plan at the time wouldn't be much of an issue to me. That is if I somehow lose my unlimited. Which I don't think I will.
I think what that Rep is saying is if you assume responsibility for your line which is different than starting a new one from scratch and trying to transfer your number or data plan ...

Hmm. I was planning on swinging by an AT&T store sometime in the next few days anyways. I suppose I'll figure it out then. If it won't be transferable, I'll just have to stick with my family plan as long as possible and start paying my parents for my portion of the plan. We'll see.
Ok, just chatted with another rep, and they confirmed what you are saying. I cannot simply split off and keep my unlimited data. However, if I get a bit messy, I can. All I need to do is make my line the primary line on the family account, release the rest of my family so they can start a new family plan, and then I can keep my unlimited data and switch to an individual plan. Here is a pic of my convo:

Of course, I'm pretty sure my sister will lose her unlimited data, however, she doesn't use anywhere near 3gb of data and would be fine with that. Either that or she could stay with me and we could have our own separate family plan. Hmmm. I have a lot of decisions to make. Haha
you can split off account to a new one, and keep it in their name. you will all keep unlimited that way. you only lose it when switching account to your name.

Yeah, but then I would have to deal with paying my mom for the bill and whatnot. They want me eventually to have a completely independent plan of my own, so I will likely do it in the way I stated in my previous post.
And I'm going to try and convince my sister to share the plan with me, it would only be 75 bucks a month for each of us as opposed to 110 for just me on my own.

Upgrade does not kill Unlimited Data

Just pre-ordered a GS3 using my upgrade discount. My unlimited data is intact. I called back after the pre-order to verify, and I was assured that my plan still has Unlimited Data, and will KEEP unlimited data until such time that I change plans.
The rumor that you lose Unlimited data when upgrading is just that, a rumor. According to both the CS rep, and the Customer Loyalty department, the only way to lose Unlimited data is to drop it from your account by changing plans, once you do that, you will not be able to get it back.
hope that helps some of you out there, worried about losing it.
I hope thats true, ive kept reading after the 28 you couldnt keep it if u upgrade through them...but i have another year left so im not tooo worried about it yet

every phone i've started to upgrade since june 28th shows a big red box that opens saying ALERT: and then explains how the customer is now losing unlimited data, and gives us the box to check for 2 gigs for 30/mo. it WILL NOT let us proceed in the system without checking the new 2 gig box.
unlimited data is GONE as of june 28th.
As I understandi it, you have to be on a family plan to get bumped on an upgrade. Individual plans can still upgrade and keep unlimited.

well for those that "guarantee" that I will lose it, I guess Ill just have to post a screen shot of my bill in a few weeks when the phone gets here.
I was -very- specific with 2 CS reps, and then Customer loyalty (the department that deals with you when you are about to cancel)
I told them that if I was going to lose my unlimited data plan then I was going to cancel my service. Both CS reps I spoke to assured me I would not lose it.
Not being satisfied with that response, I asked to speak to the customer loyalty department.
She assured me that they are not canceling unlimited data plans for anyone. Unless 3 people at VZW are lying to me, (and I will know soon enough) then I feel confident that my plan is in-tact.
I don't know what to tell you. I suppose I could record a phone call and then post the audio for you to hear? lol

Unlimited data contract verbiage request

I'm looking for the actual contract text, not someone's summary. This is because someone said that even unlimited data was capped at 5gb and that this fact was well known. The agreement I've found here only says that " if you use an extraordinary amount of data and fall within the top 5% of Verizon Wireless data users we may reduce your data throughput speeds periodically for the remainder of your then current and immediately following billing cycle to ensure high quality network performance for other users at locations and times of peak demand." I can't find the 5gb number anywhere. That was updated in February, so that may be why. I joined Verizon after unlimited was ended for new subs, so I can't look at mine. Thanks.
There are people here that use 10-20GB+... was even one person that had a little over 1TB of data used...
It's not capped at 5GB, the 5GB number was for tethering if you paid the extra $30 for the tethering application.

I know that, that's actually why I'm looking for this. I think unlimited is unlimited and these people are not abusing anything. (I'm not saying VZW ending unlimited is wrong, just the justification they gave, namely abuse and network congestion [since they throttle the heavy users during that time anyway])

It's not capped at 5GB, the 5GB number was for tethering if you paid the extra $30 for the tethering application.

That would make sense as well, though that's an awfully low number. What's the point of tethering if that's all you can get?

Can you link to the contract? Or scan one, or send a pdf? I'd like to actually see that instead of someone just telling me. Because someone else saying "no it doesn't" is just as valid an argument.
rabidpencil said:
Thanks.

There is no set number for unlimited data. That 5 gb is just an arbitrary number people have been throwing around here for a long time as to what was the top 5% number Verizon would use to slow down your data speed. I've exceeded it without any problems many times as have many others so its baseless.
I may have my receipt with the contract on it in the box for my Rezound, I'll see what I can come up with.

That's what I thought, but had no proof. I just get tired of people criticizing other people for using their bandwidth as much as they want. And, as it turns out, Verizon shouldn't've even been able to stop them from tethering, according to the FCC. I just wish Verizon would come out and say "we think we can make more money by ending unlimited data, so that's what we're doing". They won't, but I wish they would.

It was on Verizon's website it said if you have an unlimited plan you cant use it excessively. Excessive things include streaming video and downloading large files etc. If you use over 5 GB in a month you are using excessive amounts of data and your account can be terminated at our descretion basically. I read that from the Verizon website awhile ago, so its not arbitrary

That looks like a feature of the ROM, you can change the limit, or just leave it alone. It's designed for people with an actual cap to avoid overages.

You know I've been worried about that ever since they got rid of truely unlimited and went to data packages. They better not do away with the grandfathered in plans. Wouldn't be surprised if they did tho.

So far I haven't seen anything beyond hearsay that there was an actual limit to unlimited.
But if there was, that's crap. A company shouldn't be allowed to call it unlimited if it's got a limit. That seems like a truth-in-advertising issue.
And by the way, if streaming video is excessive, why did they get the rights to NFL mobile whose main draw is streaming video? It's just disingenuous to advertise something if you're not going to allow people to use it.

unlimited doesnt mean its capped at 5g. but in the older contracts they defined "unlimited data" as 5gb

2gb data plan to unlimited data plan at no additional cost

I will try and make this short and too the point but its important to understand the details. I used to have the Motorola DROID X with the nationwide talk and text 450 mins with unlimited data. My 2 year contract was over and I was eligible for an upgrade so for christmas my parents wanted to get me a new phone. I told them I wanted this note 2 that I now currently have. The tried to purchase the phone at the upgraded price under my account from verizon but because I had to sign a new contract the couldnt do it with out me present. We then went to the Verizon store and purchased the phone at the contract price and I had to sign changing my plan to the 2gb data share everything plan. It is now the 16th of January and I have received numerous txt messages saying I may incure charges for data usage so today I called up verizon and told them I wanted to go back to my old plan with unlimited data because of these messages they were sending me. They said it was past the 15 day period and that I cant return the phone I then told the man on the phone that I didnt want to return the phone I wanted to keep the phone and to tell me how much money I would have to give them so I could keep the phone and go back to my old plan. The gentleman said he didnt know. I said I would pay the difference of the full retail price to the contract price so I could go back to the old plan. After some back and forth and some hold time he then told me he would have to fill out a form so that upstairs can review it and accept or deny my request. So then I asked to his supervisor because I did not like his solution he put me back on hold and then came back and said ok my supervisor said to go ahead and change the plan back to your old 450 nationwide talk and unlimited txt and data so I said great how much do I owe you to keep my phone now and the gentleman said nothing I was surprised so I asked him again... I dont have to pay full retail price to keep my phone and go back to my old plan???? He then said again no my supervisor said to just go ahead and change the plan over with no additional fees. So i said great he put me on hold changed my plan back over then asked if there was anything else he could help me with today. I then assured him he was great and got off the phone egger to see if what he was telling me was true i went online checked my account and to my surprise immediately my account was back to my 450 nationwide talk with unlimited txt and data. So after about an hour and a half on the phone with verizon I now have the samsung galaxy note 2 at contract price with 450 nationwide talk with unlimited txt and data. I couldnt be happier......... thoughts people...... has anyone experienced something similar?

You are a rarity. Once you change they don't want to give unlimited back. The paper work is simple since if you go from a 4g to a 3g phone you will lose unlimited every time and that is how they get it back.
Next time you will have to pay full price if they still allow us to have it by then.

Yea I was surprised. I went from 3g to 4g and still have 4g now after going back to unlimited data so yeah I was extremely happy to say the least I thought for sure I was gunna have to pay full price for the phone. I couldnt see why they wouldnt allow me to go back to my original plan if I paid full price for the phone. I mean I had that option before buying the phone at contact price. The verizon deff did one better for me this time... ANOTHER TWO YEARS UNLIMITED DATA!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!

Same thing happened with me. I lost my unlimited when t mobile ported my number over 15 days earlier than promised. (I was trying the service out in my area... Sucked)
It took 20 calls to winback and customer service to have a form request filled out and reviewed from another dept.
After about 5 business days they finally restored my unlimited data... Thank god bc I'd never survive on 2gb.

Edit:
I was late to this party.
I have been trying to do the same thing since Dec 21st.Refund the 299.99 and bill me full price. They keep telling that I can't go back since my old plan since it does not exist anymore.I have talked to 5 or 6 people so far and get the same story.I sent a email to the Vp of US customer service hoping to hear back from his office.
I sent a link to this thread to Verizon on their Facebook page and Via email to show that it can be done and that they are just giving me the run around.

It most certainly did and yes I was extremely surprised idk if my loyalty to the company has anything to do with it as I am a customer for aprox 13 years now. However I was told I could purchase the phone at retail price and keep my plan in the beginning so I couldnt see how they wouldnt allow me to do that even right after I renewed my contract they still got a contract renewal out of me.... I dont know what to tell you I just posted this to see if anyone else was as lucky as I believe it if u want dont if u don't want to it makes no difference to me... all I know is I didnt pay full retail price for my phone and I still have unlimited data

Way lucky.... I gave up my unlimited data and went with the 4gb plan. I am on wifi most of the time and typically used anout 1.25gb of data per month so it wasn't a huge loss but would have been nice to keep.

Yea I use right around 2gb but Im not near wifi most the time ( never home ) its fine for now but there are times where I may hit 3gbs and who knows how much data phones will be using in years to come there should be no reason to have a phone bill over $100 a month

I had reverted back to unlimited as well. But they charged the difference for the remainder of the full price of the phone to my Verizon account. My bill ended up being like 650. That was the remainder of the cost of the phone unsubsidized and my monthly bill combined. I was aware that they would do this.

I was seemingly able to keep unlimited data as well. The strange part is that I did not get any information concerning what data plan I have on the confirmation email or the order confirmation page. It definitely did not switch me off of unlimited during the checkout process though. In fact, I just tried it with another line (without finalizing the order) and it did the same thing. All it says is Plan Details: Voice: LINE ACCESS $9.99 0711. I think i saw someone else mention the same thing happening to them as well but am not sure. Anyone else seeing the same?

Yes. I am seeing the exact same thing. It says my monthly cost is only 9.99 a month for that line. It shows no data plan. Early in the checkout it did say unlimited data, but didn't mention it again. I was afraid to order. Strangely, if I select the note 3 it will act normal. I am even able to go back and change the phone to the g2. It shows my unlimited data at the end. The only problem is I cannot enter the $60 off promo code. Didn't want to take a chance on the first method.

FWIW I checked my confirmation email and it still has the "Unlimited Email & Web for Smartphones (personal email)" for $29.99 listed under the Plan Features. I think I'll hold off on calling them pending your results, mfucci.
I just did this today to upgrade to a G2. Did not change my data (as far as I know) and still showed unlimited during checkout.

That does sound strange. I posted earlier that I received a confirmation email that still showed the $29.99 unlimited data under the plan features, but judging by the rest of the comments on here it looks like I may be in the minority... I guess for me it's a good thing that the phone doesn't ship until mid-November since presumably that would give be a bit more time to cancel my order.
