[Q] AT&T discounts - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I know we have some AT&T employees on here, hopefully one of you can answer my question. I chatted online with a rep and they gave me some useful stuff, but not quite as detailed as I would like.
I am currently on my family's plan, but my parents made hints to me recently that I could maybe split off eventually, so I was considering doing it this summer when I am working again and have time to build up cash to hold me over the next school year.
Anyways, I confirmed in my chat with the rep that I will be able to transfer my unlimited data to a new individual plan. I then asked if there were any discounts for college students, and she led me to the premier page, and I was able to verify that my school has some sort of discount or deal through AT&T. However, figuring out what that discount that is is messy, and I was not able to figure out what.
Can any of you figure out what discount my school has? My family currently has a 25% discount from my mom's job, if it were something like that, I would be thoroughly pleased, as paying a hundred bucks a month would be much worse than around 75.
I know that in one of the long past threads there was a link to the premier discount sheet or something that one of you posted. I would like to keep as much personal info off of here as possible, so if you need my school to check for me, please pm me.

I can tell you that I used to work directly for AT&T as a U-Verse Technician and only received an 18% service discount. However when I switched to a different company I started receiving a 23% corporate discount.
It's weird how att assigns its discounts but id expect at least a 20% university discount if not more.

I did that before, but when I tried to use my current number they wouldn't allow me to set up the rest of my account without linking my current family plan, for which I need the last four of my moms ssn.

In that case, I would advice you to call the AT&T Premier Support and have them check if they can create a new account while keeping your same number. If they can't then you might need to port your current number out to prepaid temporarily and then proceed with the above steps and then port it back when you create a new account. But I would give Premier call first and see what they say.

Ok. There is also a corporate store near me, so maybe I'l swing by there tomorrow and check it out. If they can't answer me then I'll call up support.

sounds like you want to do a transfer of billing responsibility to your name and social. you can do so at https://www.att.com/olam/loginAction.olamexecute?target=ToS by logging into the current account. Normally you can't keep unlimited data if you do so, but this will at least allow you to create a new account under your name. You can always add the discount after the account is established. If you prefer to keep the account under their name in case your discount is less, you can call care and have them split the bill so another account is created under their name and same discount with a separate bill and account number (this method does allow you to keep unlimited data. The transfer of billing responsibility to change to your name does not).
One way you can see what discounts your school qualifies for is by clicking on link from premier in the school inbox and on the bottom right of the page that loads, there is a link that says available offers. Once you click on that, it shows you all discounts you receive from your school. Should look like this http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/8589/discountn.jpg. This is just to see what the discounts are, not to create the account as it will try to convert the entire account you have to this new discount.

welchertc: The discounts can vary. They may not be the same from one school to another (as far as I can tell). Usually the school can tell you what the discount rates are though so maybe you can call or look on their web site. Also, (at least in my case), AT&T recognizes my school's ip addresses and directs me to an appropriate page that has all the discounts already set up when you shop. If you have access to the school and can get on their computers, try surfing to AT&T wireless from there, you should be directed to a Premier page. Hope this helps.
Lastly, you get discounts on-line that do not seem to apply if you go through their brick and mortar operation (such as waiving the activation fee). Any AT&T person can chime in if that's incorrect but that has been my experience.

On a similar note to your op, my gfs brother is on our family plan and we gave him tthe hint to maybe move on his own soon. Our store reps said we couldn't transfer the unlimited data from his line to a new account. Wtf? So is it possible then, assuming the Rep u spoke to was correct ..

While doing a transfer of billing responsibility from your parents account to your own you will probably not keep your unlimited data unless you do it in the store and even then it's not guaranteed unfortunately.
Most school discounts that I have seen are between 10% and 15%.

As cool as it'd be for the unlimited plan to transfer AT&T is very strict on that grandfathered plan. I don't see them transferring the plan with the number since the plan is tied to the account.
You would essentially have a new account with a transferred number. And if that's the case the data package would not transfer. But you might get lucky.

When chatting with the representative, they made it clear that so long as I keep my number, they treat it as the same line, just split off of the family plan with a new individual one, and that I could keep my unlimited plan. I'm not worried about that too much.
Anyways, I don't see much of a benefit to me splitting off of my family plan yet, so I probably wont until I am on my own financially. When that is the case, based on my likely salary, paying for the top level data plan at the time wouldn't be much of an issue to me. That is if I somehow lose my unlimited. Which I don't think I will.

I think what that Rep is saying is if you assume responsibility for your line which is different than starting a new one from scratch and trying to transfer your number or data plan ...

Hmm. I was planning on swinging by an AT&T store sometime in the next few days anyways. I suppose I'll figure it out then. If it won't be transferable, I'll just have to stick with my family plan as long as possible and start paying my parents for my portion of the plan. We'll see.

Ok, just chatted with another rep, and they confirmed what you are saying. I cannot simply split off and keep my unlimited data. However, if I get a bit messy, I can. All I need to do is make my line the primary line on the family account, release the rest of my family so they can start a new family plan, and then I can keep my unlimited data and switch to an individual plan. Of course, I'm pretty sure my sister will lose her unlimited data, however, she doesn't use anywhere near 3gb of data and would be fine with that. Either that or she could stay with me and we could have our own separate family plan. Hmmm. I have a lot of decisions to make. Haha

you can split off account to a new one, and keep it in their name. you will all keep unlimited that way. you only lose it when switching account to your name.

Yeah, but then I would have to deal with paying my mom for the bill and whatnot. They want me eventually to have a completely independent plan of my own, so I will likely do it in the way I stated in my previous post.
And I'm going to try and convince my sister to share the plan with me, it would only be 75 bucks a month for each of us as opposed to 110 for just me on my own.

[Q] Thunderbolt and 4G tether

In order to gain access to the developer threads I thought I would postulate a question here.
Some background that lead to this question was the rumor mill around Big Red sniffing out Rooted users that tether.
I checked my data usage online and was able to pull up the file size of all internet transactions over the air. I could assume that if I was to tether the PS3 or used my laptop to download some HD movies or something it may be a red flag to see like a 6 or 8 gig file. Also, with a tethered laptop there would be other things running in the background that may point to non cell usage. Not to mention probably a lot more data consumption in general if multiple sources are sharing the connection at the same time.
Now, say I was tethering my CM7 nook. Would not the data in both size and format be the same as the Thunderbolt. Is there even a way for the powers that be to tell that is is not the Thunderbolt. Maybe someone could shed some light on this as it is one of the questions that I have.

I am at about 3 gig with about 10 days to go, and have not tethered anything to my phone. What I am guessing is that a red flag would be a 3 gig file in one download. In my Verizon it lists the size of all your downloaded files. My question is more about the type of data requested/sent from a tethered android tab vs a laptop.
If they can keep track of the size of the download you can assume that they can tell the type of the file.
Bear in mind that these are the ramblings of a paranoid dude. Sorry if my question is as clelar as mud.

A knowledgeable big red employee told me today that they have been tracking the top 5% of data users and "something" was about to come down. I don't tether so I didn't dig for any more info.

I just wonder how much data the top 5% is using. Are we talking 100Gb, or would the top 5% be down to say 15 Gb.
Again, my original question still remains. Can they tell what kind of data you are using?
It does beg the question though, was free 4G tether a stress test on the new network, or a baseline for data consumption with tethered users?

It doesn't make any sense for some big red smackdown to be imminent. they are giving every thunderbolt owner free unlimited 4g (phone or tethering to any device, it doesn't matter). your packets go through verizon's servers so of course they can analyze all data. they could sniff/analyze the packets and steal your passwords or any other data if they wanted to, just like any other company can like comcast/sprint/att. but do they really care? i highly doubt it. why would they start throttling users without warning? what will happen is on may 15th they will announce whether or not we early adapters get to keep "unlimited" 4g. now its truly unlimited, but i would bet in the future they will have some fine print about a ___ GB limit. you are not going to get in trouble, and yes they could definitely/easily track if your hotspot app is running or not by various methods of network analysis. rooted phones are more of a gray area, but as amazing as LTE is compared to wimax, I'd gladly pay for the hotspot.
so basically... don't worry, wait and see what the rules are in may.

No offense, but your friend doesn't seem to have thought out what she said very well. They aren't going to up data plan prices on those that already have contracts. They could yes, but you can bail on your contract without paying termination fees if they do so as well. Also, since the bionic will have LTE data (even if you don't use it), you will be stuck in the same contract as any of those that have the TB and if by chance they do raise prices and do so before you have the contract, you'll be paying the higher priced data plan.
Also, the bionic is similar to the atrix, just as the thunderbolt is similar to the inspire and other than the 2 core cpu, which will be more of a hindrance to performance for quite a while than improvement and the hdmi abilities, they dont have hugely contrasting specs. Well, other than moto blur, which is a shoddy piece of software and the locked bootloader that has about as much of a chance of being unlocked as you do winning a multi-million dollar lottery .
Reading threads like these helps me confirm why I think most people are idiots...
I will be moving from a "talk" phone to a new TB or ?? in the next week so I have been reading and trying to figure it all out for the past 2 weeks now.
A quick question...assuming I get the Thunderbolt.
I will purchase the unlimited talk plan from Verizon, then add the $30 unlimited data plan. If I root my phone (plan to do) then do or will I need to also purchase the hotspot ($20) service from Verizon as well?
If I read things correctly, all I need is the unlimited talk and data plans ($99) and I am good to go. I can then use my phone to connect my laptop to the internet and surf on it when I need to. Is this correct?

I have this thing called a contract with Verizon. It's for two years. Big red doesn't get to decide if I get to keep my unlimited 4G on May 15th. If they send me a text message on the 15th saying my 4G plan is now changed, I get out of my contract without an ETF and go about my business.

Sadly, no offense to your friend, but they would appear to know about as much as everyone else in VZW's call centers when it comes to things not read off their support terminal, which is to say exceedingly little, and nothing to be trusted.
Now while it is possible VZW decides to raise their LTE data plan prices for new customers they will not raise the prices on existing customers while they are in contract. Reason being doing so constitutes a breech of contract on their part which means you can legally break your contract without penalty. A contract is a two way street. You agree to pay $X per month for a set length of time (24 months in this case) and in exchange VZW agrees to provide you services as lined out in the contract for the duration of said contract. If any party performs an action that is in violation of that contract then said contract can be considered null and void and depending on which party caused said contract to be nullified the breech could be subject to any liquidated damages stipulated in said contract (read ETF's).
Now back to your regularly scheduled insanity...

Agreed. 100%. Reading some of these threads make me paranoid as well.
Though I do have to wonder. If I were to tether my TB to my Eye-Fi SD card to upload photos, whether they would notice, care or know. Idears?
The fine print for when I ordered my TB says that tethering is free until May 15th, 2011. It's a "trial".

From Sprint Evo 3D to AT&T Galaxy S2

Well here's my story for whoever wants to listen. I started with sprint not that long ago, with the Evo 4G. I came from T-mobile, and from the minute I started with sprint I really loved the service. I add my father to my plan, so i have a family plan for two, coming out to about 170 dollars when all is said and done. I started wondering if I really needed to be paying that much, because on my family plan we use about 200 out of the 1500 minutes we get every month, and we don't have 4G in the area. I do some research and find that i can do the 700 minute plan on AT&T with 2gb of data each for about 145 a month. That would equate to about 300 dollars a year, something worth considering.
SO, I call up sprint, I have a nice tone, and ask them if I am able to lower my bill in any way. They are obviously making money off of my minutes, and whether or not they may credit my account because I can save 25 dollars with no consequences just by switching companies. Lower support tells me there is nothing they can do, and I tell them that I am going to cancel the lines. "One second please," "let me transfer you to our retentions department." Ok I feel like maybe retentions will do something for me. So after talking to the first level of retentions, she tells me that there is nothing they can do and that if I would like to lower my bill I can switch to a feature phone. What??? So I tell them that that is simply not an option, and that I'll just cancel the lines. "One moment please, have a talk with my supervisor." The supervisor again tells me to switch to a feature phone, and I say that that is not an option and that I would just like to cancel the lines. She rudely responds, "Alright is that all I can help you with today?" I questionally respond "I guess so," and she hangs up the phone.
Now I'm pissed, I have to do this all over again, and I end up transfering my lines to AT&T and saving the money. I had spoken with one more sprint associate, and asked if they would rather lose both my contracts then to credit my account for 20 dollars a month, and was basically told yes.
I am pleased on AT&T and the GS2 is a great phone. AT&T actually made a mistake setting up my account, and credited my first month with 30 dollars and 100 free minutes.
This 20 billion dollar iPhone deal seems to have Sprint by the balls, sorry just felt like venting.

This wasn't me trying to tell you guys about "what I'm doing." It was me telling you about an unsatisfactory experience with multiple sprint employees and their inability to keep a customer when it is more or less known fact that people get credits to their accounts.
Now I know that you probably got butt hurt when you saw the GS2 in these forums, and that was probably responsible for your douche bag response. I loved sprint, they had awesome customer service. Had to make a decision with my wallet this time and the sprint employees didn't exactly help in this situation.
Your unsatisfactory experience is that they didn't give you free money, that's all. I mean, it sucks that you got a rude CS associate, but still, the jist is you wanted free money for no reason. You were basically blackmailing them by saying "give me free money or I'm switching".
And no, I didn't get "butt hurt" by seeing GS2. I got annoyed because you just want something for free.
You must either be trolling me or just don't know much about how companies work??? I did not just want free money. I expressed to them over and over again that I would like to stay with sprint. If I can pay less for the same amount of usage at another company, why would you not want to price match, unless it was going to cause you to lose money overall? They could take my 150$, or they could take nothing, and they chose nothing. Sorry if this offends you.

He was arguing his usage of few few minutes to lower the price since they were far below the talk time for that plan.
So where as Sprint caters to those who use more at low prices.
He needs a Plan that caters to users who use less, allotted less & pay less.
This was a case of the wrong carrier choice. AT&T would work out for people who use less, Sprint works well for people who use more.
Whats weird is my dad called sprint and we had the 3000 family plan in which they had no problem lowering it to the 1500 plan which saved us somewhere around $20-$30 a month. Not sure why there not willing to keep a customer because instead of making $1300+ a year off of you now they get none of that.
But just remember AT&T has the worst customer service supposidly.

+1 on this. I really don't know why that is. I use to have a family plan $40/month where I have unlimted data, sms, mms, and the other line was flip phones with just voice. There is no such plan anymore. All family plans now if their with data then all the phones have to have data. Doesnt make sense to me.
What you guys have been talking about is pretty much my point. If your competitors offer similar plans, why not do so yourself? 1500 minutes and unlimited data is not really necessary for a two person plan, yet that's their only option. Sorry for being unclear and sounding like I was complaining about not simply getting a discount, I guess sprint just wasn't a good fit for me, shame for them though because I was willing to stay if they had a competitive plan.

I wish those petitions mattered. I know that since they are not breaching your current contract nothing can be done. Most likely they are taking off unl data if you upgrade from 3g to 4g(sing a new contract with new terms) or switching to data family plans. All current 4g unl customers might stay on unl plan unless they upgrade their phones. The terms are not clear yet. That's why let's do not panic and wait and see what happens.

The petitions do matter, they had a huge impact on reversing the proposal of the the $2 credit card fee. They had 50,000 signatures on change.org in just 24 hours it created buzz and a huge community back lash on Verizon.
Though the terms aren't clear yet, it's best not to wait. It's better to build up momentum now so are voices are heard than wait till it's too late.

I think there is some confusion about what is happening here. They're not killing unlimited data for those people who already have it. They're making it easier to lose it, not taking it away. If you update or receive a device at a reduced rate, you lose unlimited data. Just buy your devices off Craigslist or the XDA market like I've been doing for the past couple years. Always have a newer device and spend less money than you did signing a new contract.
And before any asks, YES you can switch between devices (4G --> 4G, 4G --> 3G, 3G --> 3G, and 3G --> 4G). As long as you don't buy the phone from Verizon at a reduced rate, your plan will be unaffected. I can confirm this from speaking to multiple Verizon reps in various positions/departments/pay grades. Every one said the same thing (which is rare) so this has obviously been a topic of discussion.

They released the full details on it a couple weeks ago. You can keep your unlimited data, as long as you pay full retail for your phone (which I plan to do for the Razr HD). What I don't know is how they will handle it when certain people on a family plan upgrade their phone. Will they have their own "share" plan, or will each person on the plan get pushed into shared and lose their unlimited? I honestly have no idea, however, when my father or brother who are both on my account come time to extend their contract, I'm kicking them off my plan. They don't see the reasoning for spending 650+ on a new phone just to keep a data plan, but I do. I average 25-30 GB of data a month. That would far outweigh the cost of going over my $100 for 10 GB allowance on a shared plan, especially with other users on the plan. The $600-$700 bucks is a small price to pay upfront compared to the cost of overage charges. So in closing, no you won't lose your unlimited data, as long as you pay full retail. And unfortunately, no petition will change that.
For now, Sprint still offers new unlimited plans. I'll go there if Verizon cans unlimited. And, agreed... petitions don't do a thing. Verizon is responsible to their shareholders to keep the company profitable. They'll do what they do.

They force the entire family onto the shared data plan. I just got the Razr yesterday, and they put us onto the family shared plan with 6GB of data to share (we have 3 people with smartphones, so 2GB for each of us). This is actually cheaper for us than it was before with me on unlimited and the two others on 2GB plans, AND we get unlimited talk and text.
Also, you should stop using 25-30GB a month. I'm surprised Verizon hasn't severely throttled your data speeds, people like you who hog up so much data are the exact reason why Verizon is trying to force people onto limited and shared data plans. This video goes into detail about why so many carriers are switching to tiered plans. This link talks about how it could be fixed, but it's not really happening yet or soon. In short: people use up too much data and Verizon doesn't have enough spectrum for that. Back when they started offering unlimited, they were perfectly able to, as they didn't really have as large of a base as they do now. However, that made them more popular, and now with the move to 4G, people will be using more and more data. In short, that leads to Verizon not being able to handle all of that. To remedy this, they moved to tiered data, and now shared data.

I understand what you are saying, but I use my phone as I wish, and as far as the "you people" comment, there are people who use well over 100GB a month. I stream music to and from work every day. I work for the Government, so Slacker.com is blocked at work. I use my phone to stream music at work as well. I download apps here and there, maybe a rom update on occasion, as well as watch netflix on my phone at night. I use my phone as I see fit. I do not feel like I am abusing what I have, nor do I feel like it is people like me who caused Verizon to go this route. Verizon moved to shared and tiered data for one reason and one reason only. The unlimited data business model wasn't making them as much money as they would like. They can and will make more money using this new model. You think one or two hundred, or even thousand people in a given area using 20 gigs of data a month are really "overloading" their spectrum? That is a drop in the hat compared to the hundreds of thousands of people who live in and around the Baltimore/DC metro area alone. The power users make up a very small percentage of the populous.

I realize that there are people that use far more than you. However, my argument isn't really just about the power users. Verizon wants to restrict them because they use so much, but everyone does contribute. Everyone having unlimited just wasn't working. If they kept unlimited, more and more power users would come along, which is exactly what was happening. Yes, it is about money, because they'd lose plenty of it from running out of spectrum and switching to other carriers, who would as a consequence run out of spectrum as well, and so forth until a solution was found. As a result, the high prices on data now for power users is to try and convince them to use less data. I'm pretty sure this is how they make up for the amounts of money that they're losing for the many people on lower data plans, because as I said, my bill is now lower monthly, and I'm sure it is for plenty of other family plans too.
Also, if you want to use blocked websites at work without using up so much data on your phone, set up a proxy or VPN that runs through your home network while you're at work. Though, thinking about it, you have a government job, so that probably wouldn't work over too well... but if you're already using your phone to get past that, I don't know how far you're willing to go to get it. Just a thought on how to use less data though
EDIT: And sorry if I sound rude at all, I'm trying not to. I'm just one in the minority that supports Verizon's decision to move to the shared data system... Reddit is good at convincing me about things.
I use my phone to stream pandora to and from work every day (1hr each way) and I barely hit 1gb in a month. I tie into the wifi whenever I'm. At work or at home, but still 30gb seems excessive foe streaming music. Just saying. Lol

Upgrade does not kill Unlimited Data

Just pre-ordered a GS3 using my upgrade discount. My unlimited data is intact. I called back after the pre-order to verify, and I was assured that my plan still has Unlimited Data, and will KEEP unlimited data until such time that I change plans.
The rumor that you lose Unlimited data when upgrading is just that, a rumor. According to both the CS rep, and the Customer Loyalty department, the only way to lose Unlimited data is to drop it from your account by changing plans, once you do that, you will not be able to get it back.

No it is NOT a rumor and has been posted in Verizons official documents. What you were told was wrong.

every phone i've started to upgrade since june 28th shows a big red box that opens saying ALERT: and then explains how the customer is now losing unlimited data, and gives us the box to check for 2 gigs for 30/mo. it WILL NOT let us proceed in the system without checking the new 2 gig box.
unlimited data is GONE as of june 28th.
As I understandi it, you have to be on a family plan to get bumped on an upgrade. Individual plans can still upgrade and keep unlimited.

When I pre-ordered my Galaxy s3 it gave me the option of keeping my unlimited data. I also confirmed this with customer service who read me the memo that states pre-orders of the Galaxy Nexus before June 28th would be able to keep unlimited data.
I did use the upgrade on my wife's line just in case.

Verizon did say though that users with unlimited data who pre ordered the GSIII would get to keep unlimited data. That was the only way.
I hate Verizon for this though as my upgrade is November and they wouldn't let me move it forward.

well for those that "guarantee" that I will lose it, I guess Ill just have to post a screen shot of my bill in a few weeks when the phone gets here.
I was -very- specific with 2 CS reps, and then Customer loyalty (the department that deals with you when you are about to cancel)
I told them that if I was going to lose my unlimited data plan then I was going to cancel my service. Both CS reps I spoke to assured me I would not lose it.
Not being satisfied with that response, I asked to speak to the customer loyalty department.
She assured me that they are not canceling unlimited data plans for anyone. Unless 3 people at VZW are lying to me, (and I will know soon enough) then I feel confident that my plan is in-tact.
I don't know what to tell you. I suppose I could record a phone call and then post the audio for you to hear? lol

well like I said, I spoke to 3 people today about it. And unless all 3 of them are very very mis-informed, or lying to me. I will be fine.
I even told them about this forum lol, which is why I wanted to be sure. they all assured me that I would not lose it.
Honestly I dont care either way, I dont use my unlimited data to capacity, but it seems like everyone here is SURE that we will lose it on upgrade, but so far experience and conversation with the source both contradict those assumptions. Ill post again in 10 days

This is not specific to the Verizon Galaxy S4, but it is indeed the only reason I will preorder the Verizon version tomorrow (as opposed to switching to another carrier).

I imagine that's the only scenario in which I would go with Verizon's GS4. Right now their most attractive offer is $70/month for 3G speed, 2GB of data, and unlimited talk/text. Pretty much worthless in my eyes.

I agree. Paying the extra $450 to get it off contract will MORE than pay itself back bay keeping the unlimited plan. I use my Vulkano Box to placeshift to my phone or tether to my tablet and watch on that. I'm using close to 8 GB a month. Nothing close to you, but enough to pay off contract and keep my plan is well worth it.
I have grandfathered unlimited for $63/month. But youre saying that Verizon gets the S4 a month later than everyone else? Don't know if I can wait that long.

You're really willing to give up a carrier (especially arguably the best carrier service available at this time that you won't be able to get back ever again after losing it) all because you can't wait one more month for a phone?
If you're going to go down that route you should consider not wasting away that service of yours and selling your line to someone else to take over. Grandfathered Unlimited Data plans on Verizon are as good as gold right now.

I have two unlimited data lines that I took over for free last year right before they took away the upgrades. I bought an iPhone 4s and managed to preorder the galaxy s3 because both lines were eligible for upgrdes at the time. I consider myself lucky. I tether and share with my ATT friends at work I burn like 30gb a month verizon has never bothered me. I'm thinking Bout going to t mobile though to cut down on my bill and get gsm nexus phones

I tether to my gaming laptop to play online games I think it burns a lot of data. Also I use xbmc to stream movies and do some Torrenting. I might skip out on gs4 and wait to see a phone with that snapdragon 800 chip I'm very interested in the quickcharge 2.0 it has that they decided to leave out on the 600 sadly

So the link above is good info, but is there any more detail missing? I've got unlimited LTE on my Galaxy Nexus and plan on pre-ordering the S4 tomorrow at full retail 649.99. Is there anything to be cautious of when placing the order?

Does that mean I lose my unlimited either way since I only have 3g right now, even if I buy without a new contract?
My sister in law went from the droid x to the Verizon galaxy nexus last month and did NOT lose unlimited. She just went and picked up a Sims card and popped the ***** in. Took maybe 2 minutes for the phone to be fully functional. Her plan wasn't changed at all. If you take upgrade price you will lose it

Pretty much it's simple. To avoid losing your unlimited data you have to meet the below requirements:
Be already on an LTE device with an unlimited data plan
Purchase your new device all full retail or on the new device payment plan (dividing full price into 12 monthly payments)
Avoid using an "upgrade" on the line you have unlimited data on at all costs!!
Try to avoid making any little other unrelated changes in your service (you never want to give them a excuse to force you over to tiered)
If you have other lines that can upgrade (like family plans) you can use their upgrade to get the device at the cheaper price and then just swap your microSIM card into it

Does that mean I lose my unlimited either way since I only have 3g right now, even if I buy without a new contract?

Unfortunately it appears to be the case. But who knows, maybe if you yell loudly enough and threaten to leave Verizon unless they can confirm they will keep your unlimited data, maybe someone will be able to do some "behind-the-scenes magic" and transition over for you. But in all reality, without a serious fight for it I wouldn't count on keeping it if you upgrade even at full price.
Well if I spend $650 on the phone, I damn well will scream at them if they tell me I still lose unlimited. I'm going to have to try to find out before I do anything I guess, not like I have anything else to do for 36 damn days.

I might skip out on gs4 and wait to see a phone with that snapdragon 800 chip I'm very interested in the quickcharge 2.0 it has that they decided to leave out on the 600 sadly

See I guess there it is. I am never really in a situation anymore where I would tether my laptop. Our laptop is four years old and basically sits at the end of our kitchen table. We are pretty much 100% tablets for mobile computing now. I don't have time for in depth games much anymore. Work/gym/kids eats all my time. And if I am going to sit and "do computer", I am going to do it in the study in a proper chair with a proper keyboard, a big monitor, a mouse, and fast tower pc. Laptops have been squeezed out of my personal life by the superior overall experience of a real desktop set up and the superior portability of a tablet. Don't get me wrong...my work computer is a laptop, but I don't see much need for one for personal stuff the way my life is set up now.
I guess if I were a single twenty-something it would be different, but really, I don't have much of a need for big data mobile computing.
