[Q] Question about ICS AOKP [ROM] task manager - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I would have just posted this in the AOKP thread but I can't unfortunately.
I was wondering if there is any way to access the task manager without having a home button (or any on-screen buttons). The reason I ask is that I was uninstalling some apps through the market today when I looked away for a second, and when I looked back the task manager was open and I have no idea how it happened.

With the on screen buttons yes, but I believe that its just a bug. My task manager likes to open up randomly.

I wonder if that's related to the screen-turnon bug.

I did notice this with the on screen buttons on the pacifier ROM. If you leave the screen on with the home screen up and no power source connected, the ICS task manager will appear at the same interval that the screen would power on at. Since switching to the Spike Pure ICS build, the task manager doesn't appear as often but the screen still powers on at the same intervals as before.

Anybody try freezing the task manager with Titanium Backup to see if the screen powers on?

I have v1MAR2012 R1 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522844 my screen doesn't auto turn on, it's at 98% battery after almost 2hrs with little usage.
The only thing i've noticed is that GPS is a bit slower than with ICS'd Out V9, i really wish we could fix the home button and enable the other two so i could disable the soft buttons that take up space.

Two things:
1) If you are using CM7, it is not possible to turn off BLN as of now, sorry.
2) The BLN lights consume very, very VERY little battery. As in, lets say you got a message as soon as you unplugged your phone and they stayed lit for the whole day - they would use less than 1% of the battery. So don't worry about BLN, it's not as bad as you may think.

That statement isn't totally accurate. I am on CM7 and didn't want BLN functioning. To keep them from coming on, you can change your profile settings.
Go into Settings -> Profiles and select the profile you want to change (if you don't use them, just select Default). At the bottom of this next menu, you'll see a section called Application Groups. For every item in this list, you can select it, and then turn Lights Mode to Off. This will stop BLN from lighting up the buttons.
You can call this disabling BLN, or a workaround, or whatever, but it's worked for me.

Nice, this must be a recent change... I remember there was a whole controversy over it about a week or two ago, and the profiles didn't work at the time. Thanks!
Oh yeah, I should have mentioned I'm running the 7/17 CM7. I didn't use any of the previous versions, so I can't comment as to their functionality.
I hated bln at first, but its really grown on me and now I wouldn't consider a rom without it. And agree with the first reply, basically no battery consumption.

Honestly, I think the problem is with another app running in the background while your screen is off, thus preventing your phone from sleeping. I would recommend the "active apps" app from the market and seeing what you have active at the time.
Another note: if your bln remains on while your screen is off, try opening the notification drawer and clearing your notifications. That works for me (of course, I actually click on the relevant notice usually which also deactivates the bln until the next notice comes in)
Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...

The phone is rapid, but the home button isn't? :(

Is there a way to make the home button respond instantly?
Does anyone else have this problem?

It has something to do with the Voice control samsung built into the phone, people were saying you can freeze/ delete the app and your home button will be instant, i can personally vouch for this because I'm using CM7, a rom that doesn't have the voice control and my home button actually is instant.
it something to do with the processor and power management.
The delay is present in CM too but not as bad

I thought that had to do with the wakeup "lag" i.e. just waking the phone up from sleep, if you are talking about that yes its present in CM as well. I thought he was asking about home button when exiting out of apps and such, as i noticed a slight delay in that when i was using the stock rom.
I've froze voice commands with Bloat Freezer and this hasn't made any difference :/
Since KG1 firmware, home button lag has been solved. Home button acts normal now.
The OP hasn't explained what his problem actually is, so there's no point telling him to freeze apps!
@jameslfc5
Do you mean it takes a couple of seconds when the screen is off and you wake the phone with the home button, or do you mean it pauses when you're running an app and you press home to go back to your home screen?

It responds instantly when connected to a charger. So it must be software related. I haven't found any 2.3.3. or 2.3.4 ROMs that remove the lag entirely. I'm sure someone will figure it out though.
When connected to charger the phone does not sleep. So no lag.
I have same problem as OP.
Note - it's not the wake-up delay, which is also annoying. It's the regular "go back to home screen" delay when using the phone.
I'm running Cognition 1.31, and problem was present on Stock ROM, VillainROM, Cognition 1.15 and 1.31.
I had voice control only on Stock ROM, and don't have it now - no difference. Delay is about 0.5-1 second.
Super annoying. Makes it feel slow. Was not present on any of the SGS ROMs.
+1
I just think of an iPhone... it's better in only this thing
CM7 fixes it. I think I know what you mean, I had it in Cognition 1.31 and litee'ning rom. Now I don't or don't even notice it.

[Q] Multitasking / screen off / facts & fiction

Does anyone know or could point me toward information about how to impact the multi tasking in Android.
The problem is:
- Somehow 'screen off' event is linked with the activation of 'deep sleep'. Now that's all nice and well but it's interrupting downloads and stopping appplications (try it with dolphin browser during a download, try turn off your screen with angry birds on, etc)
- Multitasking seems random: you can download market apps, move to angry birds, and play while it downloads, but you can't play angry birds, move to market app, and go back where you were in angry birds (it will restart the whole game).
Can anyone clarify the above? Thank you.
Turning the screen of will send the phone into deep sleep unless something is holding a wakelock, downloads should hold one till they finish, and if they are not, it's a bug.
As far as multitasking goes, yes it does seem random, and very much depends how the application was coded to deal with it, it seems that ICS will deal with this by adding a dedicated multitasking button.
Android will kill background inactive tasks as and when needed, but again it depends if the app was designed to hold its state in the background or dump out. And in low memory situations, which we shouldn't really get on the sgs2 it will start aggressively killing stuff in the background.

Do you have the setting "wifi off when display is off" ? That could disturb/stop download I guess..
Thank you. The reason of course is that I'm trying to use the phone as a 'mini computer' and on your pc you can off course turn off the screen while downloading files and doing some background processing.
The solution for me so far is to accept that the screen must be on when doing anything that takes time, so I have it set to never turn the screen off while charging, and have a widget that takes brightness down to 0% in a single click.
I suppose I just have to accept that the phone will eventually be outdated and the screen would die long after that - so 'using' the screen is not that big a deal.

I have actually been happy that with my device, I can actually start a download, using either stock or opera browser (haven't tried others) and not have to keep the screen on and have the download finish. Not only for screen timeout, but actually pressing the button to turn it off. With windows mobile 6.x, pressing the sleep button killed data, and only push mail or scheduled things (usually/hopefully) would "wakelock" the phone enough to receive something. It worked very poorly.
I honestly think you have a bug somewhere, because you should not have to leave the screen on for long periods of time just to let a download finish.

[Q] 5 Sola Questions

1. How do I turn off floating touch completely? It makes gaming impossible, and has no real benefits other than previewing xvideos.com clips. I of course tried disabling glove mode, no success. I tried installing an app that was supposed to turn it off, it even requested root, but did nothing after reboot.
2. How do I disable the the illumination bar and the backlight of the capacitive buttons permanently? The led illuminates one side more than the other and it doesn't look good. A couple of apps allowed me to do this, but then they just stopped running in the background and the lights were back. I need a permanent solution here.
3. I love the option that I can limit my background processes, but I always end up with my xperia home closed, and the whole home screen gets reloaded. Can I add it as a specific exception? So a max of 4 processes, but never close xperia home.
4. The screen is flickering when I set the backlight to the lowest setting. I have my auto brightness off. What could be the problem?
5. After the ICS update, the notification bar has two battery indicators, one is a percentage, the other one is an icon. How do I get rid of one without installing a loader?
+1. How can I make my Sola more responsive? I froze bloatware, I restart the phone pretty much every day, but it seems to lag and freeze all the time.
Thanks!
Use a custom rom like CM and most of your problems will be solved!!!
But its meant for unlocked Bootloaders only ..
Sent from my Xperia Sola using xda premium
Yes, you need to flash CM as it doesn't have floating touch, and users say it's the fastest.
But I can tell you about flickering, it's normal no problem with that.
As to battery percentage, you must flash a modded notifications bar, you can find many in Apps section.
As to reloaded home, make sure u have latest .54 firmware, try using task killer, or simply another home launcher, and set background processes to 3 max.

Does this happen to anyone else?

I've noticed that sometime if I'm I'm an app and I push the home button it almost instantly brings me back to my home screen and other times it has a slight half second delay. For example it will be super fast maybe 10x in a row, then it will have a slight delay but eventually gets quick again.

I experience this every now and then, usually with resource-hungry apps. Not to pretend like I know what I'm talking about (because I don't), but it might also have something to do with redraws on the launcher.

Oh yeah I'm running nova launcher prime.. No maybe it's just the launcher and not the phone at all? Other than this i really never notice any lag.

I should mention that I also have aggressive desktop checked on nova launcher. Not sure what it does though. Maybe the next time I notice this slight delay bill restart nova launcher and if it goes away I guess I'll know it's a nova launcher issue which in sure the next update will fix.

If you have S-Voice activated on your phone the S4 will wait about a half a second after you press the home button to see whether or not you press it again to activate S-Voice. If you disable this, it will immediately go to the home screen after pressing the home button. It is not lag, but rather a built in timer.

I have had this happen a few times . I've been running the CM nightlies and just thought it was something to do with the build.
I turned my kernel to stock settings (I was overclocked) to try to replicate your problem and I guess now that I am consciously thinking about it I have it too, I don't think its a huge deal though. A quarter of a second isn't that bad to me so I don't really care. If I'm overclocked it the animation is instant. It could be the ap switcher animation that lags under high resources. Try disabling that? or OC your phone.

In your developer settings, select animator duration scale and turn it to 'off' see if that helps. If not, then there isn't alot you can do unrooted I don't believe.

Oh I see. I have them all off now. I uninsulated this app called system monitor lite and it seems like it always runs in the background bcuz how else would it be able to monitor my battery temp etc all day? It might be placebo but ever since I uninstalled it everything seems to be running really good.
Sent from my Verizon Galaxy S4
Well I've spent hours trying to figure this out. When I have 0 apps running, and for example I open up the phone app or contacts app, then hit the home button, it responds instantly. However, sometimes once I get a bunch of apps running in the background the home button response can slow to like half a second, almost as if that s voice home button feature was enabled. Do you think the problem here could be that a bunch of apps aren't yet optimized for the s4 so when they are running in the background they are causing some home button lag?
