Tired of that small 5gb usb storage? Here is my hack to swap your external SD card with the USB storage!
This is usefull especially if you use GPS apps that download maps or games that download big data files! I got the idea and studied several hacks for the galaxy 1900 so partial credit goes to whoever made those hacks.
DISCLAIMER : I have only tested this on the 4.0 U.S version running 2.3.5 and am not responsible for a brick (although it seems impossible to brick your phone while messing with this file).
So basically start by going to /system/etc using root explorer or similar (yes, you need root). Once there backup the vold.fstab file to somewhere ON ROOT (I put it in /data/app/)! This is important so you can access it if you need to restore it (also make sure root explorer is installed on device memory, not SD card). Now take my modified vold.fstab and replace the original in /system/etc, then change the permissions to rw-r--r-- (long click the file, then select permissions) . If all goes right after you reboot your device, USB storage should now be your SD card and vise versa! Be aware any apps on your USB storage will now have to be transfered using a PC, move the .android_secure folder to your SD card. Hope it works!
EDIT: here is a modified version for the yp-g70, all credit goes to rjsmith2007 for making and testing this!
Won't Maps pull data from the Ext SD anyway? All my music is on ext SD and players have no problem finding it; I would think maps would be the same. It's really like a 5gb and 16 gb (in my case) partition (isn't it?).
I'm looking for a reason to root, SD card/space is not one of them. My battery only charging to 90% is though, need to recalibrate (since it's never hit 100%)

I am referring to when you download maps with an app like sygic;
it saves it to the /sdcard/ directory instead of the /sdcard/external_ed/. Also gameloft games do the same and can use up your room pretty fast. I find this pretty useful myself, since I have a 32gb sd card, but just wanted to post it so if anyone does ever need it, it's here for them.

I just tried it with my Galaxy S Wifi 5.0. The mapping of the internal sd to the external_sd folder fails, but it works for mapping my external sd to the sdcard folder.
Edit: I took a look at the original and made a modification to yours to work with the YP-G70 model (the 5 inch one). Just copy the file from within the zip folder to your /system/etc folder.

Thank you! I appreciate it! I post it on the original post and give you the credit.
Thanks man. I appreciate it. I was trying to do this myself before, but ended up having to format my SDcard and gave up. Thanks for the help!

glad I could help!
Can't I just copy all of the data from my internal sd card onto my computer, remove the internal sd card, copy those files onto a larger sd card and put the larger sd card back into the galaxy player? Im sorry if this Queston has been asked before, or if it sounds stupid, but I can't find the answer to this Queston anywhere! Thanks in advance!
(P.S) This post was made with a Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0! No joke!

Hi,
There's still a bit of confusion with respect to terminology, I think (including myself).
I *think* that when the SGP5 displays "internal sd card", it's only part of the "internal 8GB memory". That "internal 8GB memory" is probably, I guess, something like an SDCARD or flash memory module that's soldered to the mainboard, and with Android, I think that it's split into a couple of areas.
Here's my "guess" of how things are arranged, using the terminology from Settings==>SD card and device storage:
"System storage": Part of the 8gb internal memory, e.g., includes /system, etc.
[1.65GB, in my SGP5]
"USB Storage" = "internal sd card" = /sdcard: The rest of the 8gb internal memory.
[5.01GB, in my SGP5]
"SD Card": The external microSD card, if you have one plugged in. Appears at /sdcard/external_sd.
[29.81GB, in my SGP5, where I have a 32GB microSD card plugged in.]
That System storage + USB Storage totals 1.65+5.01 GB, or 6.66GB. I guess the remainder of the 8GB is for bootloader, etc.?
Jim
Looks about right. Task Manger has them labeled like you list them, except there is a "Personal data" partition. It's 133mb on my 5.0. Maybe email and contacts?
I'm guess apps get installed on "System Storage", plenty of room there without having to move stuff to USB or Ext. I pretty much just use my ext card for media and pictures.
For some reason this caused issues with my Market connecting to the internet, any idea why? Anyone else experience issues with this modification?
Hmm, no no one has mentioned that problem, and I have been using this for months - no problem. Sorry if it did that, have you tried restoring the original? Also, an update to the instructions is to change the permissions to rw-r-r. I didn't notice anything wrong without changing the permissions, but you never know.

Pretty close.
https://github.com/Entropy512/initramfs_yp-g70/blob/master/misc/recovery.fstab is the Player 5.0 partition table.
As you can see, nearly everything is on partitions of mmcblk0 - on the Player 5.0, this is eMMC (embedded MMC) storage. The total size of mmcblk0 is 8GB
The partitions here include (but are not limited to):
p10 - EFS - this contains device-specific config data, on phones that includes IMEI, on our device it's probably Bluetooth and WiFi MAC addresses
p11 - Kernel
p12 - Recovery (on some devices, recovery is a separate kernel partition - Samsungs have this partition set aside even though most of their devices don't actually use it. You can put anything you want on p12 and it won't do anything usually. For us, recovery is part of the kernel initramfs on p11)
p13 - /system - This is where the system firmware, often called the "ROM" sits. A number of people are trying to fight the "ROM" terminology, since it's not really true - flash isn't read-only, thus it isn't the "ROM" any more
p14 - In the linked file it's /datadata, but the device actually mounts it as /dbdata - various SQL databases for apps live here
p15 - /cache - a cache partition separate from data. Files stored here are intended to be safely wipable/deletable
p16 - /data - Various user data. Your apps live here unless you've moved them to SD. Most system settings are here too. ICS merges this partition with the internal SD so they are one and the same
p17 - /emmc in recovery and, if someone ever has the time to port it, CM7, /sdcard in Samsung factory firmwares. This is the "internal SD card".
There are a few other partitions that are not touched by recovery that exist, such as the LFS partition and the bootloader partitions. These are all small.
mmcblk1 is the external SD. Usually only one partition, which is /sdcard in recovery/CM7 and /sdcard/external_sd in Samsung factory firmwares
On the 4.0, I believe it uses Samsung's older NAND flash technology and not eMMC, so the partitions on internal storage appear as stlN/bmlN
i think i did something disaster...
i am using Samsung Galaxy W. I did follow your above instruction. The problem is after restarting my phone, I go to setting>storage and it shows total space and available space for SD card and USB storage is UNAVAILABLE. What is available is only Device Memorry which is 1.03GB.
Thinking that your vold.fstab is not compatible with my Samsung Galaxy W, I replace it with the original vold.fstab that I backed up earlier. However this does not solve the problem.
Then what I did is I tried to reset the phone to its original factory setting (Setting>Privacy>Factory Data Reset..),. Unfortunately the same problem still persist. And i think this is silly and catastrophic step since i loss my original vold.fstab which is stored in the internal memory.
Any of you can help me?
Many thanks to all of you
Well, did you change the permissions on your backup back to rw-r--r--? And yes, this mod should only be used for the device intended for. Are you sure that you replaced the modified vold.fstab with the original one? Did it give you an warning about overriding (it should have)? Are you sure you used your backup and not accidentally mine? What program did you use to copy?
Hmm stupid question, but how do you replace the existing file? I am using root explorer an it says it is read-only when I try to paste it in there.
Edit... Never mind... I didn't have it mounted correctly.
I have tried this multiple times, but every time I reboot it says "USB storage damaged, may need reformatting." So I press reformat, and it's done in like 1 sec and the problem still persists.
Any ideas?
Hmm, odd. I know you have the same version player as me, are you running 2.3.5 or 2.3.6, maybe that could affect it? Did you try before you did a lot of modifications to your device? What type of SD card you got, I use a 32gb class sandisk. I don't think that would matter, but you never know. I recall getting that error when I was working on the mod, but I got it fixed before I released it. Weird.
Oh yeah, what do you have your sd card formatted as? I use FAT32, not sure if that could affect it. May want to try reformatting the card on a PC, then try.
I have a 8gb kingston micro sd card, and I'm running 2.3.5. I had this problem a long time ago too when I was still on stock. Maybe it's my sd card. I will reformat it and try again, and if it doesn't work I will try a different sd card.
I'm using a GS3 w/ a Sandisk 64GB microSDXC card formatted as exFAT. I'm hoping someone here with knowledge of exFAT can help me troubleshoot an issue I've seen. This is probably going to end up fairly detailed, so bear with me.
I recently copied ~40GB of data to my new 64GB card in Windows using the card reader in my laptop. It appeared to go off without a hitch. Today, however, I noticed an issue with my music files (mostly .mp3 and .wma). I had transferred a new song to the card and it seemed to go through. However, on the device, the file didn't appear. So I did it again, transferred the file, and it seemed to go through. It didn't tell me there was a duplicate file on the device either, so I played it on the card through Windows to test it. No issues. Unplug my device and the file disappeared again.
So I go into ES File Explorer (and later I used the My Files application that Samsung loads, with the same results) and go into my music folder to see what's going on. It appeared that at some point, the file name got corrupted and concatenated with part of another file name; instead of being "artist - song.wma", it was "artist - song.wmas Track).wma". So I think that the OS doesn't like the .wma in there, and try to rename it to what it should've been. The system says that that the file system already exists. I tried to delete the file, and it won't let me. The file explorer is also reporting that the file is 0kb in size. At this point, I open up a terminal emulator and try to delete the offending file through the command line, but I cannot delete/rename the here either, despite being listed (I'm told the file does not exist). Finally, I plugged in back into my Windows box but the bad files will not even show. The file on my computer is good and plays fine.
So I scratched my head for a little while. Then tonight at the gym I wasn't able to find the song I wanted. Sure enough, it was tied to this issue. I went back into the file explorer and found ~50 files (of ~4200) that had corrupted file extensions. These differed from the original in that only the file extension had been altered (ie .mp3p3 or .wmaa). However, I am unable to delete/rename any of the files. Also worth nothing is that some of these files had sizes. It's possible that other files exist like the original where the file extension is valid, but the original file extension is within the file name.
I have not confirmed this yet, but it is also possible that the issue is not limited to music files. I was looking through my pictures the other day and noticed that some images weren't loading; I deleted these files at the time and didn't think anything of it because a few weeks back my epic 4g corrupted my microSD and I had used some file carving tools to recover some images (obviously, not a perfect fix).
So the problem is beyond my expertise at this point. I'm not sure how to handle these damaged file remnants. I'd like to get rid of them because they prevent the existence of the good file in that particular folder in addition to taking up space. As a short-term solution I re-copied the files I wanted to a temporary folder on the card and they are working without issue.
Right now I'm leaning towards wiping the card, reformatting it, and transferring again. However, before I do that, does anyone have any ideas? Is there any chance this could be an issue with the card itself? Or a GS3 issue? The files on the computer are still good and the problem seems to manifest itself regardless of the method used to transfer to the card as the original files were transferred using an SD adapter and card reader, and the file that triggered this issue was transferred using the usb cable.
I appreciate any insight or opinions.
Tim
it's caused by long/speciafic filename of the file.
just put the sdcard into your cardreader and then connect to your pc, delete/rename the file which caused the issue.
The files don't appear for me to be able to delete them. The file explorers won't allow me to delete them. A terminal lists the file but tells me it doesn't exist when I try to delete it.
UPDATE: I formatted my memory card using the device itself and transferred the files again. This did not resolve the issue. Interestingly, the SAME files that were corrupted last time were corrupted this time. I can still transfer the same files from my computer to a separate folder and they work. The file remnants cannot be deleted or altered. What could be causing this issue?
Is this a genuine card? I once bought a 16 GB memory card that was actually just 2 GB but reported the full 16 GB to Windows. I found out I had been scammed when I started getting errors similar to yours when I copied more than 2 GB of data.

I'll give it a shot when I have more time, but I'm leaning towards a software issue. It's either an issue with the file system itself, or with the SGS3 software. The same files are corrupted in the same way each time (in the same folder). However, in the new folder where I moved the copies of the problem files, there were also some corruption, but different from the original folder. Moved new copies to a third folder, some files were good, a few more remained corrupted. By the time I moved copies into a fourth folder, there were no more issues. The problem is now I probably have an extra 500MB+ worth of garbage that I can't do anything with. The search for the underlying issue continues...

try formatting in the device, then transfer over one of the files and see if it has a problem....I would guess the file name of the problem file is too long. if the file transfers and is still a problem try renaming it to like test.mp3 and see if it transfers ok.

I thought exFat had really large limits on filenames? That, along with the greater than 2gb file limit removal, are some of the pluses of this over regular Fat. I could be way outta line here, but that's what I remember about it. ExFat should rock! FWIW, I've had a Kingston hyperX flash drive formatted with ExFat and have never had a filename issue copying 10's of thousands of .mp3's, .jpg's, etc...
The files in question don't have particularly long names though. I'm guessing that there's a small handful of files elsewhere on the folder with a name that's causing the file system to freak out. I'm curious if tag info or metadata could cause an issue as well. This last time I transferred via sub directly to the device instead of taking the card out and using a card reader. My next move might be to transfer via the reader and see if there are any issues BEFORE putting the card in the device; it might still be a sgs3 issue...
Not sure if you have tried this yet but since it seems to be repeatable by way of the same files, have you tried copying the offending files to internal storage to see if the same problem occurs?
This would definitely rule out the MicroSD card and lend itself towards being a software issue.
SOLUTION: Format the microSDXC card as FAT32. All my files transfer, show up, and work just fine. Either the exFAT file system is broken, or (more likely) Samsung broke the exFAT support somehow. I might experiment with exFAT on an 32GB card to see if I can find the root of the issue, but for now I've lost my patience.

My Sandisk MicroSDXC 64GB card should be arriving today. I was hoping to use exFAT so will try it out tonight and report back. I have lots of HD TV shows to transfer so it will be full straight away.
Hi there
I also got the SanDisk 64GB SDXC card in my SGS3 and it is formatted as exFat. I think this exFat does not run correctly on the Galaxy.
I also encountered some corrupt file names on the SDcard and even some of my music folders do not show up as folders but as an unknown file that cannot be accessed.
Furthermore I copied some .flac files to my phone. The files work without a problem when being put on the internal storage. As soon as I put them on the SDCard the stock-music player does not recognize the .flac format anymore and thus the music cannot be played.
I guess I will re-format the SDcard to FAT and hope that Samsung (or maybe even a DEV) will come up with a solution to this problem. Another positiv aspect of having the card formatted as FAT is that I probably can apply some custom kernels and they will mount my FAT-64GB card (currently the custom kernels cannot mount or detect exFat formatted drives).
Hope this info helps a bit.
Working perfectly for a couple of week now in my S3, formatted exFAT.
I tried my Sandisk 64GB exFAT card last night and all seems to be working perfectly, I have filled it and can see all the files on the S3. Very happy with it.
Not Stable exFAT
Looks like exFAT is not yet fully finished in SGS3, thats why Samsung didn't include information about exFAT on their manual / user info.
When i use exFAT format, the problem is almost non existent in few file, but when i filled the SD card with many data and lot of small files (ex. HD Game data), the card says corrupted in my SGS3.
Screenshot is in here : LINK
The problem is only exist when the sdcard is start to filled with many files.
But when i filled it with few file but large size (ex. 4 files of *.mkv, that totals to 42GB), the card runs fine.
So the problem is only exist if the sdcard is filled with many data.
Please all of you try this, if my problem can be repeated in every SGS3, then it is definetely bug from the exFAT support on SGS3.
*also has tried it with siyahkernel that listed have exFAT support, but the problem is still the same in that kernel, maybe the support/patch/mod of exFAT that gokhanmoral use is the same that come with our stock SGS3.
Mine if near full, lots of app and game installs and small files and no problems here.

hmm.. maybe its different firmware that causes it ?, mine on XXALE8-DXLE8
My SDcard is filled with Tintin HD game data, and that makes my exFAT SD card to show corrupted on SGS3, but normal on everything else (computer, laptop).
Good day Guys
Seems i have a issue which many of us Android users have/experience but, atm, i have been searching and found some solutions but still have this monster of curiosity in my head regarding lost space for internal storage.
My phone is rooted and have custom ROM installed
I have tried the following:
* Delete the LOST.DIR folder
* Move Most big apps to SD
* Deleted unwanted/un-useful Apps
Besides from the Apps/Picts, Music & Vids/ and other downloads
These are the Zip files i have in my internal SD:
* 1 Nandroid backup about 1.3G
* 2 customs ROM zip files that would not reach 1gb of file size
* 3 Files for Kernel, not more than 30mb
* Gapps and fixes, not more than 20mb
as you can see i posted 2 screenshots of my settings>storage and i have no problems with my External SD
I am still bugged about the "available 1.03GB" space left but as you can see the Color Coded categories, i still have that One big fat Gray area that i am not convinced to be JUST 1.03gb of free space
I don't know if i have some virus/malware that eats up my storage.
Your advices are very much appreciated
Thanks in Advance:angel:
It is possible that you have files that do not fall under any of the four categories shown there. Some roms have "Miscellaneous" category, which seems to be missing on your screen shot, and downloaded contents of some games could fall under this category (even if you delete the game, the downloaded contents can stay in your phone).
I am not sure if you tried this already, but use ES File Explorer (so that you can see every single folders and files, even the hidden ones), select all folders and files in the internal storage, and check the total size. If it is ~ 10GB, then you know that the screen shot is telling the truth (in terms of the available space). Just track down the unnecessary files and delete them.

Thanks for the reply, i've done that using ES file explorer (including the hidden folders) and total size is 8.55gb
Hey!
I'm having trouble using the Android OS to move apps to the external SD card.
I know this is a fairly common problem, and I've Googled it quite a bit, but haven't found a proper answer yet.
I am on a stock, unrooted Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.3.
My phone recently updated from 4.1.2 to 4.3, and with it came the option to move apps to external SD.
I tried moving many apps, upon which my phone states they were transferred successfully, and it reflected the change in the individual app's storage overview.
Observing that my free memory had not increased for the phone's internal memory however, i used ES File Explorer to investigate.
I found that not a single byte had been written to the external SD (with one possible exception, see below), and all files remained on sdCard0, ie. the phone's internal memory.
I also noticed a new "partition" that I haven't seen before the last update, named "emulated", which contained two folders with identical content and size, one named "legacy" and one named "0". They, in turn, are both identical to the sdCard0 "partition", meaning that for some reason, "emulated" displays the exact content of the phone's internal memory in two different folders.
Finally, I noticed that my LOST.dir folder on the external SD card seemed unusually large (9.1 GB!).
I am not positive those files weren't there before the move, but I believe they weren't.
Seing as that folder is for corrupted data, I deleted its content.
Now when I try and launch any of the moved apps I get an error saying it has stopped working.
Allthewhile, the amount stored on the internal and external cards (except for LOST) haven't changed, respectively.
I read this is because the phone mistakes the internal, emulated SD card for the external one, and believes it has moved the files to the external card when it in reality has moved it on the emulated card.
Is this correct?
Does anyone else have this issue?
And most importantly, does anyone know of a way to solve the issue without having to root?
Thanks!
henninkn, have you found the answer yet?
deto here .... i9300 running 4.3 stock
doesn't move apps to SD in one click ( button itself doesn't show up on "moveable app" page ) .. tried all possible apps
in app mgr , it works , app by app ... but no reduction in int memory ... god knows where the app goes
really frustrated !!
anyone found the answer / solution yet ??

Directory Bind ?
That's the solution ?? WTF !!
Hello fellow Asus Padfone S users, my name is Andy.
I have a question regarding Internal Storage. Using Asus File Manager, I open the Storage Analyzer at bottom.
There I noticed something fishy, there are 9 Gb of memory in Others Tab. When I click the detail, it is said that I'm using only 3 Gb of space. So,where is the other 6 Gb...?
OK,so then I check in Asus File Manager Internal Storage. Then I click the root (my phone isn't rooted) directory withou hiding the system files. There, I see 2 folder, sdcard and storage, which has the same amount as my internal storage.
The sdcard folder contains my internal storage data. But in the storage folder, it contains emulated and sdcard0 folder which the sdcard0 folder has the same data as the sdcard folder in root.
Then I open the emulated folder. In there, I found 2 folders, 0 and legacy folder. And it has the same amount of data as my sdcard folder in root.
So what is this folders means...? They duplicate my internal storage data and making my phone internal storage full. Can I delete the other folders...? Will it corrupt my phone...?
Any opinion on this is much appreciated.
Thank you before.

Asus roms structure these folders differently than other phones. It differs from other devices.
They are basically the same, basically serves as symlinks to internal storage. (It does the same with my phone)
Your actual SD card should be under removeable/MicroSD if its inserted. No other paths unlike internal storage.
With the exception of the padfone s plus...
They do that so apps can save their data directly into internal storage, and the reason why there are many paths to the same is to maximize app saving compatibility.
Regarding to your issue with you running out of memory around 6gbs is taken out right away because the system uses it. You can use 10.77GB out of the 16GB available. After you first set up your device (Im sure its different with custom roms) Different reasons for that.
Its different with different devices and maybe different roms.
Anything other than that just for say around the system takes more, means there is something is wrong and a factory reset usually fixes that. Pretty confusing stuff I know but other manufacturers do the same thing, samsung got backlash when GS4 got released after users complained that the OS used up almost half of their internal storage.

Thank you very much for your respon.
Yes,I do know that my SD Card is under Removable.
And yes,I know that 6Gb are taken out for the system. I can looked it in Setting/Storage section.
But what I meant is that the reduction is from the 10 Gb that I have.
What if i delete those copied folders...? Is that OK...?
I'll try to factory reset it and see if the issue occurs. It may take somewhile cause it's frustrating if you Factory Reset your daily devices.
Thank you for your respons...
