Yes, you'll need an unlocked bootloader. If you're going to try it, here is a flashing guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20796650&postcount=26
Here is their changelog (it is combined with their CyanogenMod Gingerbread project as well, but is easy enough to figure out):
http://code.google.com/p/freexperia/
As for checking whether your bootloader is locked or unlocked, S1 Tool is your friend. You can download it from here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21624172/Flashtool/s1tool.7z
Decompress the downloaded file.
Run the utility.
Click the 'IDENTIFY' button.
Power Off your X10.
While the X10 is off, plug your USB cable to the phone, but don't plug the other end to the computer yet.
Hold down the back button on the X10 and while doing that, plug the other end of the USB cable to the computer.
S1 Tool will then read your phone and display several lines of information.
Look at the first line that starts with 'Running S1_EROM VER'. If the version number that follows starts with a capitalized 'R', that means your bootloader is locked. If it starts with a lower-case 'r', your bootload is unlocked.

will this work with all roms?

U have to be on Stock 2.1 and Use S1 tools n before that check if u have used any third Party unlocking if u did n/w or Sim unlock. if non then use the tool

This guide is pretty helpful if you're considering unlocking the bootloader of your X10:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19685019&postcount=7
Read it carefully, though.

[FAIL]Lets try UNLOCK BOOTLOADER!

I know this is completely useless since bootloader has been bypassed, but I don't want hidden things on my phone!
If you don't either, then help me!
So, I think that it's a simple button combination to fastboot and unlock bootloader.
I tried holding the this (the order matters) : BACK + POWER
and the led blinked green once. I assume that this is an indication to continue and press something else to unlock.
I don't know, that's why I ask for help.
Please try combinations and report them here.

VOLUME DOWN + POWER = FAIL (nothing happend, just boot)

we should look at the x10 unlocking method (cpu exploit) becuz x10 and x10 mini pro are similar in some specs like ther kernel.
I just lawl when I come here, I thought i will be seeing some hard hex codes, and complex kernel sources .
Btw, that wont work, and also X10 it's SO different to mimmi on everything (kernels are not the same, processor, screen, bla)

This.
If it doesnt work (no offence D4, i just dont know what programming languages you know) then we probably have no hope as we dont have a Dev team, only D4 now. And of coure, NobodyAtAll from mini.
It's funny how SE has instructions on their website on just how to do this:

Guess it doesn't work with the Mini Pro?
EDIT: Yep, doesn't, sorry for the useless post.

It works only on:
* Sony Ericsson Xperia TM PLAY
* Sony Ericsson Xperia TM arc
* Sony Ericsson Xperia TM pro
* Sony Ericsson Xperia TM neo
as the sidebar says ;-)
By the way unlocking a bootloader isn't so relevant (at least for me), i'm wondering if we could just load a custom kernel over the SE's one using kexec-tools... in the next weeks i'll start reading something more about it, thus if we load a custom kernel (with proper hardware configuration, hoping SE doesn't patch the kernel too much) i guess we could get out from 2.1 constraint that SE forces us into.
It's only a guess, but i think it's a worth trying ;-D

If u had sim unlocked ur phone using any software on pc or tool then unlocking bootloader will break ur radio
Oh and if u unlocked network using setool2 then u can unlock bootloader but then its a different procedure

I'm trying to solve a problem, but I realize that I need some help, and I think that my question could be someone's question too.
Is it possible to unlock the bootloader with the smartphone locked to Vodafone or other service provider? If not, how can I unlock the smartphone?
Yes, you can. My sim-card is also locked, i suggest you unlock bootloader from newest flashtool cuz it's easier.
Or use the guide by 9Lucas5 (use semc.bat)
I tried to use the 9Lucas5 guide but I've got no results, probably because I have emuled Windows on my MAC OS .
But I haven't tried with this new version of the flashtool yet. Do I need any firmware?

I have many times unlocked bootloader, perfectly know this procedure and has noticed, that sometimes it is possible to reach result, only by preliminary flashing of official 2.1 ROM. Certainly, thus it is not more necessary to do "kernel downgrade"

[Q] Xperia Mini Pro Questions

Hello
Just purchased a SK17i Xperia Mini Pro Black Version that is locked to 02 (UK network). I am obvously new to all this stuff but do have a basic understanding but here are some questions:
1) I am thinking of waiting until Android 4.0 is Officially released by SE to update my phone (btw, anyone know when the update is coming). Was wondering when I update will I still be able to root my phone?
2) When I root (if I can) I want to install Set CPU to overclock my phone. However I have heard this drains batteries? Is this true and if so how can I make my phone faster?
3) I need to unlock my phone. Can this be done for free after rooting? If not, can someone link me to the cheapest place I can get this unlocked from?
Thanks in advance to anyone that answers
Hey dude,welcome to XMP family.
1)According to Xperia Blog,XMP will get the ICS update in the end of May or early June, after the first wave for arcS,neoV and ray.I don't know whether we can root it on official ICS or not,but I think to get a rooted phone is easy once you unlock the bootloader, and besides, there are so many developers here.
2)When it comes to overclocking, apparently it would cause battery drain faster. But with my experience,I hardly feel its difference on SE stock Rom.As for custom rom like FXP's,which I has used for a while,it drains about 2~3% per hour while idle(drop speed is two times than stock.)
3)Certainly you can unlock your phone for free, see this thread & tutorial. But it should be noticed that once you unlock it then you may invalidate your warranty.
Mine is on FXP CM9(ICS) and it's kind of laggy, but I can't tell it's because of the ICS rom or existed bugs.As SE said,we may not have the same experience like Gingerbread if we update to ICS.

Hello mate, thanks for the great post
I think I will leave stock ROM once updated actually, seems to be running fine atm as it is.
I think I will still update to the official ICS when it comes out as does look worth it.
Just about no. 3) I think your talking about after rooting, the process to get custom ROMs by unlocking the bootloader? I was talking about the network? lol
Unless I'm mistaken?

There is no way to get your phone unlocked from a network for free but WontanServer offers an unlocking for $15. You can try that out. Just type WontanServer in Google and click the 1st link. WontanServer is legit and won't steal your money
Though as a warning you might not be able to update to ICS as it also might unlock your bootloader. Just double check, as I am not 100% sure. Also it will void your warranty

He meant that the Wotanserver network-unlock method might unlock your bootloader (which it does). This bootloader unlock, whilst giving you access to custom ROMs etc, might not behave with official SONY updates (such as ICS) - I'd link you for proof but I'm not allowed to due to my low post count .
Also, Google 'Omnius Unlock'. They will unlock your phone for free over the next few days (Easter promotion). I'm not sure how reputable those guys are though so you'll want to check.
Thanks for that Omnius Lock thing, looks great and will check it out
So, if I unlock it I may be unable to upgrade to 4.0? That is a bit stupid to say the least? Anyone on an Xperia that was unlocked then ugraded to 4.0? Did it become locked again?

Well I'm not sure about 'stupid', you'll have to weigh it up. If you look in the development section, there's already a very useable version of ICS (look for MiniCMSanwich), which is potentially better than Sony's bloatware-infused and themed version (not to mention probably unrootable) due in a couple of months.
I think it's mainly FOTA bricks that happen (over-the air updating from Sony), and some bootloader unlocks allow for this by just patching the bootloader to make it seem unlocked (any SETool unlock will do this). So there are a number of options.
Be careful also of some bootloader methods stripping the DRM keys, these are used by Sony services like TrackID, which will cease to work (permanently) following a bootloader unlock.
Edit: There's a distinct difference between a network unlock and a bootloader unlock, the former will nearly always also execute the latter, but the latter can be done by itself (obviously only on unbranded phones). The method of getting a custom ROM is basically network unlock > bootloader unlock > root > install custom kernel > install custom ROM. Root can be done before the unlocks, I believe.
I'm new to all this too, only trying to explain because I know how much of a total pain it was to work it all out .

It is the same unlock method, just everything brought to one place by that app maker.
Rooting your phone before custom ROM installation is not needed, because old ROM(stock) gets deleted anyway and custom ROMs include root already.

Fast and easy unlocking bootloader

Welcome. Looking for a simple way to unlock the bootloader in the neo-v. Very I would be happy if you show me applications such as one-click.Sorry for my bad english I can not take advantage of the testpoint method and official methods sony
Why you can not use the official way? This is the official way: Unlocking the boot loader
As I know there is no application which will do what you expected with only one click, I repeat, as I know.
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2070325
Sent from my Xperia Neo V using xda app-developers app
if I will use the method in which you get a code from sony i will lose DRM
I'm looking for an application such as ez unlock but this probably will not work on neo v (by clicking it displays the bootloader unlocked but after entering the service code still writes : bootloader unlock allowed :YES

There's S1Tool described in big thread in Neo V Development subforum. It uses testpoint method. You can try it. It haven't worked for me so I used Omnius Server. It uses testpoints too. I bought single unlock credit for $15 but you may find someone in your area with full version or with SE Tool, it should be cheaper. I'm not sure what happens to DRM since I don't use it and I flashed LX CM 10.1 right away.
Thank you all for your ideas. But I think I will try to testpoint method ... If you have any other ideas please write:laugh:
I have an idea ... It may suffice check what files are changing when you unlock the bootloader and put them on the phone with a locked bootloader
I don't know if you unlock the bootloader using the test point method the DRM security keys and the secure user data partition are lost.
By using the method suggested by me above, the official method those two are lost and the warranty of your phone will be lost in most cases.
So be careful
Later edit
I read some pages about test point method, seems the DRM code is not lost when the bootloader is unlocked by test point method.
