Just purchased a SK17i Xperia Mini Pro Black Version that is locked to 02 (UK network). I am obvously new to all this stuff but do have a basic understanding but here are some questions:
1) I am thinking of waiting until Android 4.0 is Officially released by SE to update my phone (btw, anyone know when the update is coming). Was wondering when I update will I still be able to root my phone?
2) When I root (if I can) I want to install Set CPU to overclock my phone. However I have heard this drains batteries? Is this true and if so how can I make my phone faster?
3) I need to unlock my phone. Can this be done for free after rooting? If not, can someone link me to the cheapest place I can get this unlocked from?

1)According to Xperia Blog,XMP will get the ICS update in the end of May or early June,after the first wave for arcS,neoV and ray.I don't know whether we can root it on official ICS or not,but I think to get a rooted phone is easy once you unlock the bootloader,and besides,there are so many developers here.
2)When it comes to overclocking,apparently it would cause battery drain faster.But with my experience,I hardly feel its difference on SE stock Rom.As for custom rom like FXP's,which I has used for a while,it drains about 2~3% per hour while idle(drop speed is two times than stock.)
3)Certainly you can unlock your phone for free,see this thread & tutorial.But it should be noticed that once you unlock it then you may invalidate your warranty.
Mine is on FXP CM9(ICS) and it's kind of laggy,but I can't tell it's because of the ICS rom or existed bugs.As SE said,we may not have the same experience like Gingerbread if we update to ICS.

I think I will leave stock ROM once updated actually, seems to be running fine atm as it is.
I think I will still update to the official ICS when it comes out as does look worth it.

There is no way to get your phone unlocked from a network for free but WontanServer offers an unlocking for $15. You can try that out. Just type WontanServer in Google and click the 1st link. WontanServer is legit and won't steal your money
Though as a warning you might not be able to update to ICS as it also might unlock your bootloader. Just double check, as I am not 100% sure. Also it will void your warranty

What do you mean by updating to ICS will unlock my bootloader? Isn't that a good thing? Don't mind about warranty, can have that sorted out but don't understand the bold line mate

good thing in the sense? If you don't bother about warranty then you can try custom ROM ics.but the problem is some bugs are not fixed by developers they will take time.main bug is camera not working..i am using ics so just check k? Good luck

He meant that the Wotanserver network-unlock method might unlock your bootloader (which it does). This bootloader unlock, whilst giving you access to custom ROMs etc, might not behave with official SONY updates (such as ICS) - I'd link you for proof but I'm not allowed to due to my low post count .
Also, Google 'Omnius Unlock'. They will unlock your phone for free over the next few days (Easter promotion). I'm not sure how reputable those guys are though so you'll want to check.

If your phone's bootloader is unlocked you can not recieve any official update through Sony as it will brick your phone but you can install a ICS ROM.

Well I'm not sure about 'stupid', you'll have to weigh it up. If you look in the development section, there's already a very useable version of ICS (look for MiniCMSanwich), which is potentially better than Sony's bloatware-infused and themed version (not to mention probably unrootable) due in a couple of months.
I think it's mainly FOTA bricks that happen (over-the air updating from Sony), and some bootloader unlocks allow for this by just patching the bootloader to make it seem unlocked (any SETool unlock will do this). So there are a number of options.
Be careful also of some bootloader methods stripping the DRM keys, these are used by Sony services like TrackID, which will cease to work (permanently) following a bootloader unlock.
Edit: There's a distinct difference between a network unlock and a bootloader unlock, the former will nearly always also execute the latter, but the latter can be done by itself (obviously only on unbranded phones). The method of getting a custom ROM is basically network unlock > bootloader unlock > root > install custom kernel > install custom ROM. Root can be done before the unlocks, I believe.
I'm new to all this too, only trying to explain because I know how much of a total pain it was to work it all out .

Network lock stays away, updating probably won't lock it again, but no one has tried and we do not have any sure information

So if I do unlock through the Wotanserver place, my bootloader will be unlocked but I wouldn't be able to get official ICS, but a just as good if not better copy? Is the ROM fully stable as in does everything function fine? I have heard of an ICS ROM which stopped HD recording on Xperias. Does this have any such problem?

MY flashtooll aint showing the ftf files..
and you need to unlock bootloader..

you can also use the program called SE Bootloader unloker-relocker.Its very simple to unlock it,easyer than ofical way on se website.

And just generally, can I add that this is the way to get MiniCMSanwich ROM on my XMP:
Root (zerg's software) (not needed but useful so might as well do it then)
Unlock Bootloader (from SE's website or the link which hopefully the above poster/someone else gives me)
Kernel Installation (Flashtool)
Finally, flash the ROM and Gapps using Clockwork Mod Recovery

It is the same unlock method, just everything brought to one place by that app maker.
Rooting your phone before custom ROM installation is not needed, because old ROM(stock) gets deleted anyway and custom ROMs include root already.

This really isnt a thread that belongs in development. You also failed to mention the method above, will delete the devices DRM certificates for good, they will loose the abilty to use track id and sony music and video store forever.

it kinda is, you just include a link to the bootloader relock thread. that's all that's different. kudos for trying to be helpful, i just personally find this thread as a means to boost your thanks meter..
edit: and i also feel the topic is misleading. upon reading it, it sounds like you have a new method of rooting the new firmware, without unlocking the bootloader at all. which for many people with branded phones, will be horribly shot down to see that, yet again, they need to enable fastboot to do something they have probably already read else where (probably on the linked pages you provided)

No you can't do this, hence you have to unlock your bootloader in the process to gain root with his tut and you'll loose trackID (DRM) and it won't come back even when you relock it.
You can root without unlocking bootloader on the newest FW 4.0.1.A.0.283 in another way. Check out the dev section for more info

when you unlock your phone , you can't recieve and use SEUS anymore , but if relock your phone , you can use it during update/repair without any problem .

Having bootloader "unlocked" allows flashing/use of custom kernels. Custom kernel is needed for advanced firmwares, like cyanogenmod, so having locked bootloader, cm can't be installed.
Still changes in system partition are possible using an exploit to obtain root access to the phone, allowing reasonable system customization (like bloatware removal).
Two ways of bootloader unlock are available - the official one provided by SE web service, where you are forced to agree for voiding the warranty (providing your imei, so they know which phone is to be unlocked). This way access to DRM is lost forever.
And there is unofficial "unlock" way using testpoint shortcut to ground pin, which somehow bypasses signature checks in bootloader and allows kernel with not valid signatures to run (even though bootloader looks like still locked). This way DRM access is kept. It should also be possible to revert this type of unlock and return to stock fw. Unfortunately the testpoint is covered, so using it (even blindly with a needle) might be noticeable if the phone is examined.

DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a "feature" to provide conditional access to media content. It is (was?) used in TrackID application.
Without DRM access (after official bl unlock), TrackID does not work.
It is rumoured that some newer version of trackid does not need drm to work.
In any case, there are alternatives for trackid not needing drm, so it's not really essential.
But losing it is irreversible so it's better to think twice if someone needs it or not or if just wants to keep the phone in "a bit more unaltered state".
so it's just for music? or media content means for all types of media? like images, videos and music?
what units does not lose the DRM? i just bought mine.. but i think it has a firmware build of A.0.42.. sony ericsson is really different on how samsung phones work.. oh my..
In general, DRM may be used to manage conditional access to nearly any content.
Currently I know only about trackid that needs it in xperia phones (never used it though and not sure about any other stock apps as I don't use most of them either, due to needed registration or possible spyware). Purpose of trackid is to record a sample of music around you in order to serve you details about the song played (using internet access).
But in general, it might happen, that in future stock fw update, there might be another new app, that could use DRM originally available, so you could buy music/video whatever... If it's not there already...
Simply it's kind of copy protection.
Without it, you cannot buy/access the protected content.
It's better to avoid using it in my opinion...

It's about preference. I don't like DRM so wouldn't mind not having it.
On the other hand, there is a way to "unlock" and still keep it (with possibly better chance to keep the warranty as well). But could be more difficult for not experienced person to do it.
If you do not need special kernels, BL unlock is not needed at all.

you will not able to update your phone after bootloader unlocking, though i read on arc section that there is a way, but if I was in your place, I wont take risk if I want to try SE ICS
right, with unlocked bootloader (at least the testpoint way, which I have my own experience with) the update (over the air) bricked it quite badly... I had to re-lock and then it worked again...
Not sure how it is with the official SE unlock way.
But it's possible to update with flashtool after ftf image appears (when someone converts it from official SE update).

It was fixed in latest version of setool (not free s1tool).
now i'm confused.. so getting bootloader unlocked via SE's official way has no way to re-lock it? and i wont get official update?

No, you should just never ever upgrade over the air (via wlan, ota update) and PC Companion/Sony Update Service on your computer won't work anymore. But you are still able to update your apps in the playstore

How did you unlock the bootloader? There is a way that you loose the official updates and another that you don't
I followed the instructions on SE site. :|
That way you loose the official update, even ota :s I'm still on stock because I want to learn more before I touch the bl, because of warranty too. I don't know if there's a way to get the updates back, I'm new to Sony Ericsson stuff, have my neo for a week now
The thing I concerned is that if I can still update my Neo when the official Ice Cream Sandwich for Xperia released.

if you would like to update your phone with the latest or previous software with BL unlocked, you can use wotan server, its pretty easy and straight forward or you can use flashtool if you have the proper FTF files for your phone.
If you would like to relock your BL, then you can do so, since you used the SE procedure, here's how to relock your bootloader:

But DRM (where Track ID is using) will be totally gone once you unlocked the bootloader and you cannot get it back even if you relock BL. (just a heads up though)

That's why I asked if its unlocked, and not if it's patched

yeah that was "test point" thanks, I just forgot the name the time I posted my reply earlier. LOL! I'm not really sure but according to the thread I've read here on XDA, its not possible at the moment, so I suggest using the SE procedure which is pretty straight forward.

Xperia neo is an awesome phone
Concerning about the warranty, is it compatible with unlocking/re-locking the bl? I read a lot of threads but never read nothing that gives me a clear answer...

By that method bootloader is not unlocked, but instead it's patched, so that it accept unsigned images. As far as I know, you can't "unpatch" it

Well, for start, the official online method warns you that you are loosing warranty by doing that. Did you really think they won't cover themself?
Anw, if you do the online unlock, you can lock it back, but it won't bring drm stuff like track id back, it's gone forever from your phone(but I see you already know that ).
Now in real life situation. I really doubt they will check if you still have drm stuff on your phone or if your bl is patched. They will most likely check if bl is locked or unlocked

Hi, new here .
Quick question; has anyone successfully unlocked their XMP with the Wotanserver client? I want to make sure they're reputable and trustworthy before I hand over ~£13. As far as I understand, this is the easiest way to remove a carrier-lock (and no free way exists).
This is mainly so I can then unlock the bootloader and install custom kernels.

I have read from somewhere, that they have unlocked their Xperia with WotanServer and it succeeded. Can't remember, which topic it was....Try searching.
if they use a test point method then you can be almost sure it will work well.
I have unlocked 2 both went without a problem

He needs to remove network-lock, which can be done via WotanServer.

It can be wotan server or omnius or setool but by my own experience if the server uses the test point method there will be no prob and maybe even will left the bootloader unlock.
You can unlock the sim using test point or imei code. So i don't know if wotanserver uses test point as i don't know if the imei method will unlock the fastboot mode that is why i made a comment about the method.

Yes, it does because unlocks bootloader too..

So basically I need to find out from them what method they use (not sure if they'll tell me that :S) and ask if I can unlock the bootloader as a result of using their tool - or if their tool unlocks the bootloader as well.
I'll post here when I get an answer .

dude, to unlock from wotan server, you use the test point method.. And when o unlock your phone from network, it will unlock bootloader too, so you don't have to worry with that anymore... btw, after unlock your phone, don't do officials updates from sony, it will brick your phone..

Ok thanks, I guess I'll go ahead with this then.
Just to clarify on your last point; it's the bootloader unlock which won't play nice with sony updates, right? So if I want to use an official update in the future I can just re-lock the bootloader but keep the network unlocked?

I think you just need to install with flashtool.. but I'm not sure..

From what we know at the moment, yes it is so.
Not much people have network locked phone, so we don't have much information.
And yes, unlocked bootloader will not let Sony updates to be installed.
I've been reading all day, yet I still don't have it quite clear.
My phone can not unlock the BL, therefore regardless how many firmwares I will flash it I won't be able to remove branded apps, right? because I need it rooted to remove the apps I don't want.
On the other hand, If I get a code to remove the sim lock when the time comes and the BL may be unlocked, will I be able to unlock the BL, I read in a post something that confused me regarding unlocking the sim by a code from a internet provider, but don't remember where.

I got mine networked unlocked and the bootloader is still locked. From my understanding it does not change it to yes by unlocking sim. I have only seen 2 people who said this method worked for them compared to the dozens that tried with no luck.
the only way to have your xperia rooted is through the unlocking BL and flashing rooted kernel or rooted system.img at this time. I suppose in the future there will be more options of doing it, so maybe that will solve your problem of locked BL.
i don't know if there is still the testpoint method for the xps.. but if yes you could try that .. should work afaik.. and if not then just wait for another root method

nope in the xps dosen't work, but i think if you connect the unused usb pin 4 and 5 with a resistance of 301k may come with something, idk if it works becose the 301k is hard to find

I have done already, two actually, the CE1 Generic and the NL Generic(because I heard of the speed).
Before I flash them I got from Antutu 6580
When I flashed the CE1 lower to 6520
And with the NL 6460 and now is 6634
But still some of the apps that came with the phone are still there, seems like the only way to get rid of them is only rooting.
I can't wait to get a way to do it.
By the way does anybody knows of a North America firmware for the LT26i, I can not find one. I live in El Salvador and I want my phone with a firmware for Latin America or the States, main reason is Google Voice another is that if I want to buy something from the Google Play the prices appears in Euros €.

I use unlocked phone, but I guess you can go to sonymobile.com and use sony bootloader unlock to get a code for unlocking your bootloader, although since u have a branded phone you may need a code from your career. when you got the code use fastboot to unlock it. other than these, if you just want root, flash your phone with flashtool to any rom you like. you dont need any bl unlocking for this and you still get the updates from sony. you dont even need any code from career or sony. since xperia S is new there might not be any prerooted rom so be patient and let the xda developers play around to find a way.

Antutu ratings fluctuate hugely on their own, test three times in a row and you probably wont get the same result each time.
Use Quadrant as your standard
I think you should wait for another way of rooting
