Help me Help a friend out. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my first post and its a rather stupid one too but what the heck, Im trying to help my buddy out here so im going the distance!
So ive got a friend that lives in an area where only VERIZON delivers a 3g signal and right now he is using some crappy flip phone on the UNL. prepaid plan with verizon. He doesnt want a contract but has had VERIZON post paid in the past so i was trying to see if there was a process where an android phone could be used on his plan WITH working internet without having to increase his montly cost but if not then just the wifi feature and better camera etc etc would be worth it to him.
A friend of mine came over one night and used my computer to flash his HTC EVO to be used on Page plus. Could something along those lines be done here for verizon prepaid?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481126
Search the site for verizon prepaid and see what you find, this was one of the more helpful threads for ideas on what you want to do. You are talking about something called esn cloning or spoofing and it is of questionable legality, so go for it. Damn the man.

Buy the VZW TP or the Sprint TP? Insurance?

ok, so I picked up the VZW Touch Pro tonight. Everything is great except for the sucky feeling I got jipped on memory compared to the Sprint.
Those of you who bought the Sprint model and have Verizon service, did Verizon still honor any warranty or insurance service on it? My big fear is I pay cash to Sprint for the phone, flash it to work on Verizon, and then I drop it, etc.
While I don't think the memory limit is going to hurt me much today, with 6.5 coming out I suspect it might.
What to do, what to do...
I bought my TP from ebay, it worked great for a month then the charge port broke. I bought spare batteries and chargers and used it for a while because nobody (verizon or sprint) would warranty the phone. Then, a bad flash reset the phone to having a msl of NOT 000000 anddwiping the MIN and MDN back to 0's.
I bought a squaretrade warranty at the time from ebay, so the device is off getting fixed and I am using my titan again for the time being. I f they fix the phone (warranty was a little under $50) then it is the same price as insurance and I will be happy. I can only report my opinions after I receive a working device back though
Moral of this story: If you do not have the original receipt, HTC will not warranty it. Verizons insurance wont cover a sprint phone, most you would get back is a verizon Pro. Sprint won't touch it unless you have a line of service with them.
Hope this squaretrade deal works out...
Kdj,
I'd be really curious how this works out for you, as I have 29 days to decide if I want to go that route.
My Titan ear piece speaker died and VZW swapped it out no problem. I would hate to have something similar with the TP, and not be able to get it fixed.
Good luck!
Yeah, I will definitely chime in on this thread when I get it back. Should be within a week if they work as fast as they claim!
So far, I filed a claim online with them, they emailed me a prepaid UPS returns label and I printed it and stuck it on a box and it is enroute as we speak. If they are able to replace or repair it and have it back in a reasonable fashion I will be pleased.
I also would be very interested in seeing your results. I have a Verizon Touch Pro I got about 2 weeks ago and am loving it so far but also cant help but feel like I got jipped with the -96mb.......... but there is a certain ammount of security in buying from Verizon , you get great support and service for your Verizon device that you wont be getting for the Sprint one from either provider.
Anyways I am waiting to hear your results. Thanks!
Verizon only provides my data and voice access, XDA and PPCgeeks provide the rest!
As an update Squaretrade has received my pro, so I am really getting anxious as to how this proceeds from here. I have been doing research about squaretrade, and most things I hear are good. But I have yet to read anything but random posts or articles saying they are good. Does anybody know personally or can give testimony to the quality of worksmanship they can provide?
Would any body like to see a thread specifically devoted to Squaretrade warranties and feedback from actual users? If this pans out, a one year warranty from them is cheaper than most providers Asurion policies. Maybe I will start a thread in the general section...
Easy answer!
Guys listen up. I was with Verizon for several years and I must say their network and coverage is great. BUT Verizon's pricing is way up there and I was paying a lot every month for 2 Blackberries with data plans and 3000 minutes. $300+ per month got old after about a year of those outrageous bills kept coming each month. So I started shopping all the carriers service plans and NO carrier can compete with Sprint's pricing and plan packages or offer as much as Sprint does for the money. And these days money is an important thing to be using sparingly and we all need to watch our spending. So I jumped ship from Verizon and hopped on Sprint's "Simply Everything" plan and my bill for 2 pda's with unlimited everything Sprint has to offer is only half of what I was paying over at Verizon. And I was only getting 3000 minutes and data with nothing else. I had to pay extra for the text messaging plan. You get the idea...
So now that I got all that out of the way lets get to the question at hand. Which Touch Pro should a person go with??? Ofcourse I went with the Sprint version. (the Verizon version is too square and the sharp corners make it ugly to me as well as less memory and crippled ofcourse as always with Verizon devices). There are a few factors you need to concider when making your decision to stay with the Verizon version or to go with the Sprint version.
1. Network? First things first...decide which network works best for you where you will be using your service most of the time. If the network's coverage in your area blows then don't go with that carrier no matter which device they have that you want.
2. Pricing? If this is of any concern to you then there is an obvious winner in this dept. It's Sprint hands down! You get literally everything for one low flat rate so no suprize phone bills.
3. Devices offered by the two carriers Sprint and Verizon. Both carriers have nice offerings BUT Verizon is famous for crippling their phones while Sprint does not. (another big reason I left Verizon... locked gps on my verizon Blackberry and others and forcing customers to pay extra for a factory equipped gps chip had me furious to say the least! Sprint devices have gps that is as free as a bird to use with any 3rd party app of your choosing).
4. Customer Service??? Honestly Verizon and Sprint both have good customer service so that's not such a concern here.
5. Device warranty? Both carriers are equal in that dept. too. Very good for both.
OK... knowing what I know now, if I were you guys I would return the Verizon Touch Pro asap if you are still within your 30 day "no worry guarantee" period and go over to Sprint and pick up their Touch Pro which is better in every way. Appearance is nicer looking, more memory, gps isn't locked, etc. And ofcourse you are going to save a lot of money AND get a lot more at the same time. That's a win win if you ask me!
Since I've been with Sprint, apx. 6 months) I have had very good network coverage, call quality, etc. It is at least as good as Verizon if not better. Oh there is one thing that is definetely better with Sprint... it's data speeds are far faster than Verizon. This I do know for a fact because I used data with Verizon on several pda devices the past 3 years or so. Sprint's data speeds are faster. If you are stuck in a Verizon contract then your stuck unless you are willing to pay early termination fees. If you're currently with Sprint then you are in the right place. As for using a Sprint branded Touch Pro on Verizon's network, I didn't know Verizon started allowing non Verizon branded devices on it's network. But if they do then that's all good but you will not be doing the Sprint Touch Pro any justice since Verizon doesn't offer what Sprint does. And it would be simply dumb to activate a Verizon branded Touch Pro on Sprint's network, if that's even possible. I tried to activate my Verizon BlackBerry Curve on my Sprint account and that was a huge big fat negative. The device esn's are in each carrier's data bases and if it's from a different carrier then they will not activate it period. That goes for both Sprint and Verizon. I know Sprint will not do it. Verizon on the other hand unless they just recently started allowing non Verizon branded devices on their network, they will not do it either. The bottom line in my post is to go with the better device (Sprint's Touch Pro) on a very good network with awesome plan pricing as well as all the bells and whistles that you can't get with Verizon. Did I mention Sprint is a lot cheaper??? HELL YES I DID!!!
It's a no brainer guys. times are getting rough so you better start thinking about saving $$$ anywhere you can! And we all no that we will pay our cell phone bills no matter what and not pay something else if it comes down to it. Sorry for the long post and I hope this helps some people put some thought into the subject.
That is the classic Sprint convert post
Thanks for your opinion, but sprint and verizons data networks are prety much the same. In the northwest for the most part in far out places that I travel, sprint users have to roam ont verizon network to make calls and data roaming is a whole other animal. I agree that sprint has better pricing and their coverage is getting better. Sprint does not have any roaming agreements with ACS to my knowledge, which serves alaska especially on the kenai peninsula where I travel often. I am not sure if there are many if any GSM coverage up there, as no one in alaska outside of anchorage that I have ran into uses ATT or tmobile. These are my observations and I could be wrong, but when I take my verizon phones to alaska, they play nice with ACS and even recently have allowed EVDO data roaming for me which is nice. I even roam with telus and bell out of canada for reasonable rates. Lets not start another Ford/Chevy/Dodge/Verizon/Sprint/ATT debate
Kinda back on topic, I started a thread in the general section regarding getting opinions on Squaretrade if anyone is looking for options on insuring their Sprint/Alltel/whatever device on a foreign network:
HERE And I hope we can get some feedback.

It's true Verizon has great coverage and roaming agreements. In your case living way out where you live/work you probably don't have too many choices and gsm networks just suck so that's totally out of the question, especially for you. As for most people, we live in metro areas that have good coverage where we commute on a daily basis. As for my post being a "classic" Sprint convert... sorry I wasted your time but it's my personal take and nothing that needs to be titled as classic or however you see it way out in the boonies where you live.
Back to the post topic... Does Verizon even allow non Verizon devices to be activated on their network? The Sprint devices esn's will not be in Verizon's database so even if you flash the Sprint Touch Pro with Verizon firmware that's still not going to change the esn or rebrand the device. Someone enlighten me if this carrier policy has been lifted...
There is a large thread on ppcgeeks devoted to getting Sprints touch pro on verizon network. I have one that was fully functional (minus the charge port issues stated) and the process has worked for various other HTC models including the diamond and mogul too. If you can load a verizon PRL on a device and change the MSL to 000000, it can be on verizons network. Verizon customers can call *228 and choose option 3, which programs whatever phone your calling from to your account and number.
And calm down, I was teasing you about being a sprint convert!
So technically, we know we CAN use a Sprint phone on the Verizon network. It's just the "What if it dies" factor is still there. It's not an inexpensive device, so the thought of carrying it around all day, potentially losing it, is pretty deterring.
Let's hope your warranty works out
I agree with tx_dbs_tx. He gave pros and cons for both sides. I personally agree with him choosing Sprint's version over Verizon's for the performance, memory, and looks of the device. The Sprint Pro is slick and sturdy, there data speeds ARE faster than Verizon's and I have seen the numbers to prove it. Sprint's data is the #1 reason I have service with them, #2 reason is the great prices, #3 the insurance and service and repair is nice and have always had good luck with that. If you REALLY want to do it, and have found the correct way to use the device on that network then go for it, but you won't be disappointed with Sprint.
Thank you all for your opinions, but the original topic was about insuring the device, not which service is better.
As a little update, they sent me an email today saying my device had been repaired and it has already left via UPS second day air. Got an email with tracking number from UPS too. I think they may exchange it for a refurb unit for how fast it took them, but I am not too concerned with that. Post back with final results in a few days.
So far, I am pleased with my experience regarding Squaretrade.
For anyone interested, Squaretrade fixed my charge port and shipped my Touch pro back the same day they received it. I got the actual same device back and the port works and I have been able to reprogram it and get it working again. For $47.99 and no deductible for part failure I would definitely say it was worth it to buy their warranty.
They even replaced the little friction slide in my stylus hole that I accidently ripped out trying to take it apart They stand behind their claims and are inexpensive, so I would recommend them to anyone buying phones off of ebay.
I bought a sprint TP on ebay after trying the phone @ both Sprint and Verizon. The verizon phone had a lag by comparison. Memory is the key here. Interestingly enough the Verizon party line is that they lowered the memory to keep the cost down. HMMM... They still charge more than Sprint for the phone.
Moving the phone off Sprint to Verizon was not for the faint of heart, but not all that difficult if you are willing to invest the time. The one thing you will have to put up with (at least I have not figured it out) is that the phone will show that you are roaming at all times.
Oh, and the Sprint phone looks better...
IMHO
You can definately move devices between networks.
You need QPST 2.7.3+, DUMA KEYS, YOUR MSID, bITPIM, MODEM DRIVER, and some guts.
You can find good instructions and tools @ PPC GEEKS.
Search "Sprint Touch Pro on VZW Network Tutorial "

There are some patched PRLs over at ppcgeeks that gets rid of the roaming triangle, and you can use QPST to change your carrier banner. I never was able to update my ERI.
Thanks. I actually found those after leaving my post. The ERI did not work for me either.

[Help] putting Eris on PagePlus

Hey all,
I need some help getting my Eris on the PagePlus network.
http://www.pagepluscellular.com/
I bought my Eris used and with no contract. Clean ESN as well.
I called my local PagePlus office, but they won't have anyone that can program the Eris for another month or so. I can't wait that long.
Does anyone here know what I need to do to get it setup correctly?
The rep mentioned it has something to do with "opera mini" and not actually flashing the phone. Just setting up the info.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Even if I have to go through a different office. I just need this setup ASAP!
Also... I am going for the 1,200 Minutes / 1,200 SMS/MMS / 50 MB Data = $29.95 plan. This seems to be their best data plan. Anyone using this service able to use it with the Eris well? I will ONLY download apps and big stuff on my wifi network. I am not a data hog and would only check emails while away from wifi.
Thnx in advance!

Just go on ebay and look for "page plus activation" pay the 1.00 and give the ESN. I have the eris on pp but i cant get mms to work (most likely its me... )
Thnx Joey =) Doing this now =)
WOW! This couldn't have been easier!
I bought an eBay auction for $1.99 because the $1.00 auctions were for new activation with a new number. I ported my number over from Sprint. The auction led me to: www.KittyWireless.com
INCREDIBLE SERVICE!!! She is a one person operation. I know this because she has a LIVE chat thing on her site for answering questions. She handled all the calls and setup between Sprint & PagePlus. All I had to do was supply basic info. Uber easy.
On top of that, she offers a little discount on the normal monthly service! Normal price for the "Talk N Text 1200" is $29.95. My cost was $26.00 ... awesome.
That auction was the BEST $1.99 I ever spent =)
As for the setup of my Eris in the PagePlus network? Simple. From the time I bought the eBay auction and filled out my info on Kitty's website... I was making calls in under 2 hours. All I had to do was wait for her email, put the battery back in the Eris, and dial *22890. Everything works perfectly. Voice, Data, SMS, MMS. No problems at all.
Because of only getting 50MB with the plan, I will use it sparingly. I have access to WiFi 95% of my day. No biggie.
I am really liking this service so far and I HIGHLY recommend www.KittyWireless.com to ANYONE who doesn't want a contract. but DOES want excellent service!!!
(i know... i sound like a commercial... but she is THAT good)

So you got mms without doing anything other than activating? I have been unable to get mms working at all... I really think I need my account reset with page plus then.
Just call Page Plus and tell them to activate data / mms on your phone. Usually it's not automatically activated unless you call in and tell them. Likely they will tell you that it is active, or it can't be activated on your phone, just politely insist that they activate it. The CSR's aren't too bright.
I went to kitty and did an ESN reset. That fixed my mms issue.
Just trying to help next time
just pm and ill activate at no charge
I was wondering i have 2 droid eris phones and im going to be leaving verizon but i know they wont clear my esn, since i will be putting my verizon bill in my bankruptcy will i be able to go to Pages plus and use their service, also ive seen companies that UNLOCK your phone will i be able to do that with my eris droids. Im new to all this stuff and trying to figure it out.

If your phones don't have a clean ESN with Verizon, then they won't have a clean ESN with PagePlus. PagePlus is a Verizon MVNO. You would have to flash your devices to another carrier such as Cricket.
I transferred over my 2 droids to Pages plus from verizon, i took 2 old phones i had and activated them in the place of the droids and kept the data plan. the ESN #s came back clean with Pages plus so i transfered them and activated them and bought airtime they now work on Pages plus.
Now could Verizon come back and block those ESN #s in say a month and could i get kicked off of Pages plus?
Since i now have them active with Pages plus can verizon do anything to those phones or are they untouchable?

I don't know if they'll still be able to ban the ESN or not, but if they are able to do this and do it, then you will not be automatically kicked off; you will still be able to use your phone. However, if you ever have to deactivate and reactivate your phone on the network (for an issue or something), you won't be able to get it reactivated.
Rooted?
i have a rooted eris. i called the page plus and they said my esn showed an unknown device. Can i still activate it?
You can activate it. It is unknown because its not officially supported.

I put an eris on PP when they first came out, worked great. I looking at buying another soon. Now the down side, Verizon changes the access at will regarding what PP can put on their net. If you already have it paid and making calls on PP, they are still allowing this. and the dealer is right, it is as simple as configuring the device to find PP when you go to log on. I have the 1200/1200 on my HTC Ozone and it works perfect. soooo, stay in touch and if i get this eris tonight I will try to get it configured and let you know the steps.

There are several great threads on Howardforums regarding how best to set up an Android phone to stay within the 50mb, for those looking for that info. I'm actually here now researching and looking to buy an Eris to activate like this for a friend. Which Rom are most of you using with pageplus and why?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I don't think any rom really changes anything with page plus. I use celb froyo personally I download launcher pro I like that better than adw which comes with the rom. Just get 3g watchdog and you're good to go!

[Sprint Reps] Switching Between Evo 3D & Evo 4G LTE Service

Every once in a while I go out hiking or to the lake or some dangerous (for my phone) place with friends or family. I haven't gone anywhere yet since I've had my LTE but one trip is coming up soon. Here's the thing though, I don't feel comfortable taking my LTE in case something happens to it but I still have my 3D and would like to take that one instead.
Here's the question:
Can I easily switch between the LTE and 3D using Sprints online "Activate a new phone" feature? Also is there a monthly limit to how many times I can swap devices?
I know it wasn't a problem before (with CDMA devices) I just don't know if LTE devices are activated in a different way and if it would cause problems when switching the activation. I'd rather not call every time because it's more convenient to switch it online.
I would normally try this out but since I haven't had my 3D activated on this account I'd get an activation fee and I don't want that until I know for sure I can use it back and forth. Normally I'd ask a rep but the chat is offline atm and I hate waiting on the phone for one.

Well speaking from one who knows...I have done the switching thing too numerous times to count! I always get the upgrades for whatever plan member is up for an upgrade and I keep the new phone and pass down the old one (since I pay the upgrade). Plus, I always have somebody on the plan that has a broken phone and need to switch to backup and then back (there are two accounts and 7 family members).
You will only get the activation fee when opening a new line of service with a new phone or buying a new phone as an upgrade. Switching between phones that you already own has never charged me a dime. And there is no difference in terms of your purposes (4g vs. LTE) in switching those two phones.
Good Luck

Awesome thanks for the reply at least now I know that I can switch as many times as I want and there will be no activation fee.
The only thing they worries me is that this got brought up once before but we never got an answer as to the whole LTE/Wimax thing. I just remember reading somewhere that they were two different "plans" and swapping lte/Wimax devices wasn't adviced.

Switching from my old Wimax shift, there wasn't any plan change. I couldn't activate it online and I did have to call, but was told that was only because lte/wimax looked different in their system and they had to manually switch it over.
You shouldn't have a problem other than maybe having to give Sprint a call ^^

New to the Forums

Hello everyone,
Just figured I'd introduce myself. My names Christian, and I work for Verizon. I've been reading on the forums for a while now but just recently registered. I currently use the DROID DNA rooted on the ViperDNA rom, with an unlimited data plan. I just picked up a seidio active case for it today, and can say it's the best I've seen so far. Other than that, I'm still relatively new to the rooting and rom scene, so it's been a learning experience. By the way, I'm sure I'm not the only vzw employee on here, but I'd be more than happy to help with any questions anyone has related to my job.
Welcome to the jungle. Try not to get eaten.

By the way, I'm sure I'm not the only vzw employee on here, but I'd be more than happy to help with any questions anyone has related to my job.

Can i have unlimited data xD this 2GB plan is small lol Welcome to the forums
Thanks for the welcomes so far. And as for unlimited, I wish it was still that simple. It would be a lot less work on my part finding loopholes to get an upgrade every now and then.
100+ views and only two people actually replied =/ I was joking man, I know its not that simple. But nonetheless, welcome. The forums seem to be really quiet though..
I noticed the same thing. Plenty of views, but everyone is quiet. Regardless, if anyone could use the into, I can't get new people unlimited but I can always assist in helping you keep your unlimited. Feel free to pm me about it.
Welcome I've been here for like 2 n a half years and still don't have my required amount of post for the dev section so I figured I'd say hi lol and by loopholes I have a unlimited and am due for an upgrade u know of ways I can use the upgrade?

Yeah, that was my main reason for making a new to the forums thread. Needed my 10 posts haha. But the easiest way to keep unlimited without a risk of getting your rep fired goes as follows: Have an old basic phone on hand, and add a 10$ line for it to your account. Use the upgrade from the basic phone to get whichever phone you want and have it activated on the basic phones line. Switch the service back to the basic phone. Now you technically own the new device. From there, just have the new device put on your number with unlimited data.
Sure, it adds 10$ to your bill, but my unlimited is definitely worth 10$ more than a basic 30$ two gig plan. Just make sure all actions are done on the basic line. Any changes like that accidentally made to your unlimited line will result in being dropped to two gigs.
Ahh yea I've been using my other lines to get new phones n letting them get my old ones lol I'm not losing unlimited

yeah, we have 3 lines : my unlimited, wifes w/ 2gb tiered, and dummy flip phone acct
i just use the other 2 phones upgrades for phones for me, and when mine comes up i pass the upgrade to the other line to use it
i just swap my sim card in when the phone comes in the mail
They're starting to get stricter with the unlimited policies, so I'd start watching more carefully as a heads up. My line's upgrade is coming up soon so I can let you guys know more details, but I almost believe at this point if the upgrade is used on another line, I will still lose unlimited on mine.
On a side note, I'm a huge fan of the rom nit. Viper on my dna is amazing. I'll be posting in the rom thread when I finally have privileges haha.

Yeah, that's what the warning was about. I've did the alternate upgrade method a few times, but the stricter rules may deem it pointless. That's why I was suggesting the extra basic line to have an upgrade without losing unlimited.
Previously, we could put a fake phone on it called a test device, but now they are banning the use of test devices so there needs to be an actual basic phone involved.
Welcome! I have a question if I may. My upgrade isn't until September. Once this upgrade is available, can I still steal upgrades from other lines on my plan and keep my unlimited? And vice versa I suppose. Can someone else steal my upgrade without risking my unlimited data? Any help is appreciated.

Stealing the other upgrades on your plan is how you can keep your unlimited. But you have to have the phone activated on the other line when you first buy it. Only then can you pull it off, and use it on your line. As for them stealing your upgrade, it normally works but here lately they're getting stricter so I suggest waiting until I can get you a solid answer. I believe it may elimate your unlimited at this point if the upgrade on your phone number is used. As soon as I figure it out, I'll make sure to let you know.
I've just switched to Verizon from att and the LTE on Verizon is slower for some reason. I had the One X at AT&T with dual core! I also wish I had unlimited. I don't get what you're saying about how to get it!

Sounds good! Both my parents have upgrades soon on their dumb phones so I hope to be getting one of those

1) lte speeds are going to be greatly influenced by where you live, and the amount of lte devices that are present in your area
remember, LTE is newer on ATT, and there are far less LTE devices being used on their network....many people still buy unlocked international phones w/ just hdspa+ and use them on att's network....whereas virtually all verizon phones now are sold with lte
for the most part verizon's lte coverage is much more expanded though (by me there is only lte for vzw, not the other carriers yet)
2) the unlimited data tricks we were discussing all pertain to pre existing verizon customers who have/had unlimited plans grandfathered in....theres no real way to get an unlimited plan now on verizon....though occasionally on ebay you ll see people selling a "transfer" of their unlimited line....but proceed w/ caution on that
I'm an indirect agent, not a corporate employee but, I can say right now alt upgrades are not causing people to loose unlimited... I just did one yesterday to help keep someone's unlimited data and I can confirm that it stayed.

Experience with Straighttalk

Contract is finally coming to an end and considering alternatives. Wondering what other users experience has been like with straight talk and their cdma program. been considering going to N5 on ATT but if the lte will work well will put off buying the N5.

I know this is a pretty old thread, so I'm not sure if this will help anyone else, but my experience with Straight Talk has been pretty terrible. First tried activating my T-Mobile One S, ported my number over from T-Mobile and it was activated, but their system said the activation never completed. Took calling in and talking to 4 different people before they could sort it out. Then I tried switching my service over to my Evo LTE - that was a total cluster. They screwed up the activation, called in and asked them to cancel, they refunded my access code but still activated the Evo anyway three days later. Their website is terrible, the reps are all in a different country, and every time you call you get a different answer. My current plan is to flash my Evo to Verizon and move it to PagePlus. Just wanted to put it out there in case anybody was on the fence about Straight Talk, wanted to save them some headaches.
